One person was killed and several others were seriously hurt after a ride malfunction at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus Wednesday, officials said.
Ohio State Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. Paul Pride said a trooper reported the incident at around 7:24 p.m. at the Ohio State Fair, which began Wednesday. One person died and seven people were injured, three of whom were in critical condition, he said.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich said he has ordered a full investigation and ordered all rides closed until additional safety inspections can be conducted. "We will get to the bottom of this," Kasich said at a press conference.
A video of the incident posted on YouTube showed seats of the ride breaking off and bodies flying through the air. A witness told NBC News that "the whole car went flying off and over the side while in motion."
"I am terribly saddened by this accident, by the loss of life and that people were injured enjoying Ohio's fair," Kasich said.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A swinging and spinning amusement park ride called the Fire Ball malfunctioned and broke apart on the opening day of the Ohio State fair on Wednesday, hurling people through the air, killing at least one and injuring seven others.
Five of the injured were in critical condition and the other two were in stable condition at area hospitals, Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin said. The man who was killed was one of several who were thrown when the ride malfunctioned, Martin said.
Dramatic video captured by a bystander shows the ride swinging back and forth like a pendulum and spinning in the air when it crashes into something and part of the ride flies off, throwing riders to the ground.
A company providing rides at the fair this year describes the Fire Ball as an “aggressive thrill” ride.
On its website, Amusements of America says that since its debut in 2002, the Fire Ball has become “one of the most popular thrill rides on the AOA Midway.” The company description of the ride says it swings riders 40 feet (12 meters) above the midway while spinning them at 13 revolutions per minute.
The company did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.
In a statement, Republican Gov. John Kasich said he was “terribly saddened by this accident, by the loss of life and that people were injured enjoying Ohio’s fair.”
Kasich said he has ordered a full investigation and also ordered that all fair rides be shut down until additional safety inspections can be completed.

Columbus (/kəˈlʌmbəs/; kə-LUM-bəs) is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Ohio. It is the 15th largest city in the United States, with a population of 835,957 (2014 estimate). It is the core city of the Columbus, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which encompasses a ten county area. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A swinging and spinning amusement park ride called the Fire Ball malfunctioned and broke apart on the opening day of the Ohio State fair on Wednesday, hurling people through the air, killing at least one and injuring seven others.
Five of the injured were in critical condition and the other two were in stable condition at area hospitals, Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin said. The man who was killed was one of several who were thrown when the ride malfunctioned, Martin said.
Dramatic video captured by a bystander shows the ride swinging back and forth like a pendulum and spinning in the air when it crashes into something and part of the ride flies off, throwing riders to the ground.
A company providing rides at the fair this year describes the Fire Ball as an “aggressive thrill” ride.
On its website, Amusements of America says that since its debut in 2002, the Fire Ball has become “one of the most popular thrill rides on the AOA Midway.” The company description of the ride says it swings riders 40 feet (12 meters) above the midway while spinning them at 13 revolutions per minute.
The company did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.
In a statement, Republican Gov. John Kasich said he was “terribly saddened by this accident, by the loss of life and that people were injured enjoying Ohio’s fair.”
Kasich said he has ordered a full investigation and also ordered that all fair rides be shut down until additional safety inspections can be completed.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the US. However, we are lucky enough to have the resources we need in central Ohio to help ourselves or our loved ones recover. On average, someone in the US has a stroke every 40 seconds. Stokes, like many diseases, have a path to healing that isn’t a one size fits all approach. There are also physical medicine doctors who guide the team and care. Along with the therapists and physical medical doctors, there are experienced case managers, dietitians, pharmacists, 24 hour nursing care, psychology therapy, respiratory therapy, and the lists goes on. It is clear the hospital is dedicated to providing very comprehensive care. Patients also spend hours a day with equipment towards balance, strength training, and coordination.
Dr. Julie Rindler talked about how their team is constantly working at achieving better outcomes. The hospital offers weekly classes and a stroke mentorship program. Anyone who has been through a devastating event like a stroke knows that hope and inspiration aren’t always easy to come by. This is why OhioHealth Rehabilitation Hospital makes sure to keep hope and inspiration central to their care. They also stress prevention and healthy lifestyle choices to prevent stroke from happening again.

Imagine being a medical student. You’ve sat in class and you’ve read countless textbooks. You’ve spent hours studying and taking tests. Maybe you’ve even watched medical dramas on TV. But now it’s finally time for you to go into a hospital and experience patient care first hand. You’re ready, right?
That first trip into a trauma bay or operating room can be intimidating. Medical professionals moving around, all with a job to do. A patient is laying on the gurney, scared and in pain following a car crash. And you’re right there in the middle of it. Suddenly you seem to have forgotten everything you’ve learned.
“I’ve seen people panic and be frozen,” says Shay O’Mara, MD, medical director of trauma services at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. “It can be completely confusing and the situations can be terrible. It helps to have at least had some sort of simulated experience beforehand.”
Eric Williams, the co-creator of the Immersive Media Initiative and associate professor in media arts and studies at Ohio University in Athens, had an idea. What if medical students could go behind the scenes at a hospital first and really experience it, without physically being there?
With immersive media and virtual reality, they can do just that.
“It really allows the viewer to step into an actual location,” says Eric. “Imagine if you are a surgeon in an operating room. You can now have 100 medical students looking ‘over your shoulder.’ Not only that, they can look beyond where a traditional camera wants you to look – they’re able to look in literally every direction, plus have360 degree audio. Eric and his team of students from Ohio University, as well as Dr. Petra Williams, assistant professor in the department of physical therapy at Northern Arizona University, recently spent a day in the trauma bay at Grant. They set up their 360 degree cameras to capture every angle of the trauma bay. They then stitched the video clips together into one file. When the medical student views the footage using special goggles, they can see the room from any direction.
“We can use this new technology in a more powerful way to educate our students to be ready to enter high-risk, high-intensity healthcare situations that have low tolerance for error,” says Dr. Williams.
“Medical students think they are ready for intense real life situations and they get in those real life situations and they freeze or they forget,” says Eric. “So the idea is, how do you acclimate students to that level of realism? This is one of those steps to get them ready. Go spend 20 minutes in the heat of a trauma situation. We’d eventually like to shoot in the back of an ambulance or in a helicopter, just to simulate what those experiences are like.”
“The transition into a clinical site often takes time for a medical student to get up to speed quickly,” says Dr. Williams. “We want to use this immersive technology which gives you that physical presence in a place they haven’t been. But can we also facilitate their transition in competence? To begin to train their eyes and ears in real situations where they can being to develop their competence sooner and faster.”
Medical students at OU will begin using the videos this school year as part of their education. And Eric says this is just the beginning of ways this technology can be used.
“We are figuring it out and it’s great that we are figuring it out with OhioHealth.”
The team at Grant is excited to be involved with a project that is helping to educate the next generation of physicians.
“This is sort of the next generation of educational materials,” says Dr. O’Mara. “We always talk about how do we orient people to the chaos of the trauma bay without putting them in the middle of it and being involved in patient care before they ever even seen it. This gives us the opportunity to allow people to see what is happening in a chaotic situation without being in the way or putting anyone at risk. This is just a fantastic experience. We can’t wait to see the final product.”

Imagine being a medical student. You’ve sat in class and you’ve read countless textbooks. You’ve spent hours studying and taking tests. Maybe you’ve even watched medical dramas on TV. But now it’s finally time for you to go into a hospital and experience patient care first hand. You’re ready, right?
That first trip into a trauma bay or operating room can be intimidating. Medical professionals moving around, all with a job to do. A patient is laying on the gurney, scared and in pain following a car crash. And you’re right there in the middle of it. Suddenly you seem to have forgotten everything you’ve learned.
“I’ve seen people panic and be frozen,” says Shay O’Mara, MD, medical director of trauma services at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. “It can be completely confusing and the situations can be terrible. It helps to have at least had some sort of simulated experience beforehand.”
Eric Williams, the co-creator of the Immersive Media Initiative and associate professor in media arts and studies at Ohio University in Athens, had an idea. What if medical students could go behind the scenes at a hospital first and really experience it, without physically being there?
With immersive media and virtual reality, they can do just that.
“It really allows the viewer to step into an actual location,” says Eric. “Imagine if you are a surgeon in an operating room. You can now have 100 medical students looking ‘over your shoulder.’ Not only that, they can look beyond where a traditional camera wants you to look – they’re able to look in literally every direction, plus have360 degree audio. During the filming for this I went exploring all over the different areas of Columbus Ohio with my camera and recorded some of the really interesting things that it had to offer or I happen to see. I filmed at places such as OSU Stadium to skyline shots, hidden street art and certain events held in the city while filming for this so you will recognize certain things but there may be some places and stuff you wont. Just keep in mind nothing was scripted and its all located in Columbus so keep your eyes open and enjoy.
