At the same time, the Imperial Palace is in a jubilant mood over the birth of 15th Prince; however, the Empress and RongMoMo became very envious and resentful of Consort Ling and Consort Xiang receiving love and favor from the Emperor, so much so that they suspect Xiao Yan Zi and Zi Wei are actually sorceresses sent by the rebel movement White Lotus. Love Poem from 04:33 Background A love poem by Guan Dao-Sheng (管道升, 1262-1319), the wife of the poet, painter, and calligrapher Zhao Meng-Fu (趙孟頫, 1254-1322) and (Guan) herself a talented poet, painter, and calligrapher. The story behind the poem is that Zhao Meng-Fu contemplated taking a young concubine, and Guan Dao-Sheng wrote this poem after finding out. The poem describes how Guan used a blank "silk" (Sī, 丝) handkerchief to let her husband Zhao know she is feeling "love-sick" (Sī-Niàn, 思-念) upon hearing Zhao is taking in a concubine. After Zhao Meng-Fu read the poem, he never mentioned the matter of concubines again. Word play and puns in the above poem - "'Tis silk (Sī, 丝) if I look across, 'tis silk (Sī, 丝) if I look along" After taking a look across the width or along the length of the blank silk (Sī, 丝) handkerchief, the man knew right away the woman is trying to tell him she longs for (Sī, 思) his affection. - "Dead (Sǐ, 死) if I go across, dead (Sǐ, 死) if I go along" This is XiaoYanZi's word play of the original word play in the poem. XiaoYanZi sees themselves in a dilemma where either choice (figuratively 'going along or across') results in a bad outcome. XiaoYanZi's phrase carries the same meanings as "damned if you do, damned if you don't" or "in between a rock and a hard place". 2. Love Poem from 08:38 A quote from the love poem written by Yuan Hao-Wen (元好問, 1190-1257), a poet in the Late Jin Dynasty. At the age of 16, he wrote this poem when he heard a story from a bird catcher. The catcher saw a pair of wild geese and killed one. The other goose killed itself by crashing to the ground. 3. "Engaged" (Zhǐ Hūn, 指婚) The word "engaged" (Zhǐ Hūn, 指婚) appearing throughout this series does not refer to the modern sense of "engaged//betrothed" (Dìng Hūn, 订婚) or "promised/agreed to wed". "Engaged" in this series means "authorized to marry in a decree issued by the Emperor, Empress Dowager or Empress". It applies to marriages involving members of the Imperial nobility. 4. Ginger Broth (Jiāng Tāng, 姜汤) at 19:26 It refers to a nourishing tonic that helps to prevent common cold. This common folk decoction is also used for its restorative effect in the aftermath of many common ailments and afflictions. The main ingredients include ginger, green onions, cloves garlic and pepper. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------­--- Historical Note: 5. Consort Ling eventually gave birth to several of Emperor Qianlong's children in the following historical order: 7th daughter (1756--1775), 14th son (1757--1760), 9th daughter (1758--1780), 15th son (1760--1820) who succeeded as Emperor Jiaqing in 1796, 16th son (1763--1765) and 17th son (1766--1820). 6.
