Art Davis (December 5, 1934 – July 29, 2007) was a double-bassist, known for his work with various seminal jazz musicians including Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner and Max Roach.
Davis was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he began studying the piano at the age of five, switched to tuba, and finally to bass while attending high school. He studied at Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music but graduated from Hunter College
As a busy New York session musician, he recorded with many pop artists and also worked in classical symphony orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Art Davis was a professor at Orange Coast College.
Davis is also known for launching a legal case that led to the current system of blind auditions for orchestras.
Davis earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from New York University in 1982. He moved in 1986 to southern California, where he balanced his teaching and practicing of psychology with jazz performances.
Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory or performing artifacts – artworks, expressing the author's imaginative or technical skill, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. In their most general form these activities include the production of works of art, the criticism of art, the study of the history of art, and the aesthetic dissemination of art.
The oldest form of art are visual arts, which include creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media. Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts; however, like the decorative arts, it involves the creation of objects where the practical considerations of use are essential—in a way that they usually are not in a painting, for example. Music, theatre, film, dance, and other performing arts, as well as literature and other media such as interactive media, are included in a broader definition of art or the arts. Until the 17th century, art referred to any skill or mastery and was not differentiated from crafts or sciences. In modern usage after the 17th century, where aesthetic considerations are paramount, the fine arts are separated and distinguished from acquired skills in general, such as the decorative or applied arts.

This live recording is a milestone in my career, for it marks the only time that I've performed with two of the original members of John Coltrane's first band after leaving Miles Davis: BILLY HIGGINS (drums) and DR. ART DAVIS (bass). Art also recorded with Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Harris (my late sax mentor), Art Blakey, and nearly every Jazz giant in history. Billy Higgins is known as the most recorded drummer in Jazz history. He was also the original drummer for avant-garde sax pioneer Ornette Coleman. I'm saddened (also honored) to reveal that this was Billy's FINAL RECORDING with a band before his death. He was only able to complete the first of my two nights at the World Stage in Los Angeles. He was rushed to the hospital the next morning. When his manager and I walked into...

The great trumpeter, Art Davis, was absolutely on that list, but because our paths don't cross all that often, it wasn't until I ran into him earlier this year that we first worked out a date for him to appear on our stage. Just as I had hoped, he put on a musically spectacular and thoroughly entertaining show. I was eager to have him back, and am thrilled he will be our guest again this week, along with our old pals, Andy Brown and Jim Cox. What a group! Art has played with Frank Sinatra, ...
❤ 50 years without TRANE! Tribute #2: John Coltrane Septet - Olè (1961) - Two basses interplay (Reggie Workman & Art Davis) ❤ ► John Coltrane is a unique and unsurpassed jazz saxophonist, who holds a place of utter importance in jazz history and continues to be current almost 50 years after his sudden untimely death, that stopped him and left unfinished a research whose landings have remained unknown. ► John Coltrane (1926 - 1967) is still a beacon for the generations of jazz musicians that followed him, still is and will be, who knows for how long. ► 'Olé Coltrane' was published in 1961 by Atlantic Records (Atlantic LP 1373). Here you can listen to an excerpt from the tune 'Ole', which has a wonderful duet of the two bassists (Workman & Davis) in the Coltrane septet. ► In 'Olé' Coltrane...

NOTE: This webinar doesn't focus on specific workflow steps. It's a presentation to the why more than the how behind his workflow. Harold will explain how he uses Topaz Adjust, Topaz Simplify, Topaz Glow 2, and Topaz Impressions 2, and provide concrete examples. He’ll discuss two of his ideas about using special effects in Photoshop: If you’ve ever wanted to know how the Hegelian triad and homeopathy relate to the use of the Topaz plugins in Photoshop, this may be the webinar for you. Finally, he’ll explain how he uses a touch of Topaz in his workflow to create his unique photographic art. Recorded: September 20th 2016

James Kalm adores Stuart Davis! This historic exhibition is the first major retrospective for this painter’s work in New York since the Metropolitan Museum’s 1991 survey. Focusing in on Davis’s proto-cubist works, viewers will witness the artistic arc of development from the tobacco paintings, through French Cubism to a radical, jazzy version of what the artist theoretically called “color space” design. Davis not only introduced Americans to cubism, but was also a harbinger of Pop Art, Hard Edge Abstraction as well as textual painting. We’ll get glances of iconic works like “Swing Landscape” “Mellow Pad” and “Little Giant Still Life”. This program was recorded June 8th 2016 at the New Whitney Museum.

Interview with Jack Davis for Bulldawg Illustrated, August 2009, St. Simons Island. Interview and Editing: Ryan Scates
Meet Lydia Davis, one of the most important short story writers in America today. She reads from her prose and talks about her family background, her influences, her struggle to find her literary form and how her stories emerge from her personal life. "The urge to write goes back to the urge to make anything, just to make it and make it out of language. There is a certain pleasure in taking raw material that is even messy and difficult and shaping it into something, I am not sure whether you get rid of something, but at least you have something made you feel good about." Lydia Davis was brought up in an atmosphere of writing: Both of her parents worked with writing and "language was always discussed," she says, and they encouraged her to write and she read aloud for them. Davis mentions ...
One of the premier jazz bassists in history, Richard Davis is widely recorded, not only in jazz settings but also in the pop, rock and classical genres as well. In addition to his prowess on bass, Davis is a noted educator, having been a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison since 1977. Part of the Chicago generation of musicians that included Johnny Griffin and Clifford Jordan, Davis studied bass in high school under the direction of Walter Dyett. He then attended Chicago's VanderCook College of Music while playing with both classical orchestras and jazz combos at night, including gigs with Ahmad Jamal and Sun Ra. In 1954, he moved to New York City commencing a now six-decades-long performing and recording career. Davis toured with Sarah Vaughan from 1957-60, including a tour...
