James Edwin Otto (born January 5, 1938) is a former Professional Football center for the Oakland Raiders of the American Football League.
Otto played high school football at Wisconsin's Wausau High School, under coach Win Brockmeyer. He then went on to play collegiate football at the University of Miami, where he joined the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. In addition to playing offensive center at UM, he also played linebacker on defense.
No National Football League team showed interest in the undersized center. Otto was drafted by the proposed Minneapolis franchise of the new American Football League. When the Minneapolis contingent reneged to accept an NFL franchise, Otto's rights defaulted to the AFL's Oakland Raiders. He then signed with the Raiders and played for the entire ten years of the league's existence and five years beyond. He was issued jersey number 50 for the AFL's inaugural season, 1960, but switched to his familiar 00 the next season. Otto worked diligently to build his body up to his playing weight of 256 pounds.
The American Football League All-Star game was the annual game which featured each year's best performers in the American Football League (AFL). The game was first played in 1961 and the final AFC All-Star game occurred in 1969, prior to the AFL-NFL merger.
The Sporting News published American Football League All-League Teams for each season played by the American Football League, 1960 through 1969. From 1960 through 1966, the All-League team was selected by the AFL players, and from 1967 through 1969 it was selected by a consensus of The Sporting News (TSN), the Associated Press (AP), United Press International (UPI), and the Newspaper Enterprise Association (NEA). The All-League AFL selections usually included one player at each team position on offense and on defense (i.e., one quarterback, two guards, four defensive backs, etc.).
The AFL did not have an All-star game after its first season in 1960 but from 1961 through 1969, other AFL players were added to the All-League players to form two squads, and the league held All-Star games for those seasons. After every season except 1965, the format consisted of games between All-Star teams from the Eastern and Western divisions. In 1965, the league champion Buffalo Bills played all-stars from the other teams.
A hall of fame is a structure housing memorials to famous or illustrious individuals in a certain field, usually chosen by a group of electors. The meaning of "fame" has changed over the years, originally meaning "renown" as opposed to today's more common meaning of "celebrity".
In some cases, these halls of fame consist of actual halls or museums which enshrine the honorees with sculptures, plaques, and displays of memorabilia and general information regarding the inducted recipient/s. Sometimes, the honorees' plaques may instead be posted on a wall (hence a '"wall of fame") or inscribed on a sidewalk (as in a "walk of fame" or an "avenue of fame"). In others, the hall of fame is more figurative and just simply consists of a list of names of noteworthy individuals (or sometimes groups, for ex. Sporting groups or Rock groups) maintained by an organization or community or honouring its inducted members legacy or legend.
The English-language term was popularised in the United States by the Hall of Fame for Great Americans at Bronx Community College, in New York City, completed in 1900. Its inspiration is the Ruhmeshalle ("Hall of Fame") in Munich, Germany. The Walhalla memorial in Bavaria, Germany, is an even earlier hall of fame, conceived in 1807 and built from 1900 to 1907.
Otto is a masculine German given name. It originates as an Old High German short form (variants Audo, Odo, Udo) of Germanic names beginning in aud-, an element meaning "wealth, prosperity".
The name is recorded from the 7th century (Odo, son of Uro, courtier of Sigebert III). It was the name of three 10th-century German kings, the first of whom was Otto I the Great, the first Holy Roman Emperor, founder of the Ottonian dynasty.
The Gothic form of the prefix was auda- (as in e.g. Audaþius), the Anglo-Saxon form was ead- (as in e.g. Eadmund), the Old Norse form was auð-.
The given name Otis arose from an English surname, which was in turn derived from Ode, a variant form of Odo, Otto.
Due to Otto von Bismarck, the given name Otto was strongly associated with the German Empire in the later 19th century. It was comparatively frequently given in the United States (presumably in German American families) during the 1880s to 1890s, remaining in the top 100 most popular masculine given names in the US throughout 1880–1898, but its popularity decreased significantly after 1900 with increasing anti-German sentiment leading up to World War I; it fell below rank 200 in 1919, below rank 500 in 1947, and below rank 1000 in 1975; it re-entered the top-1000 most popular given names in the US only in the 2010s, ranking 696th as of 2013.
We visited with the Hall of Fame center at home back in the late 80's, several years after his retirement, to see what life was like for the guy who snapped the ball to Daryle Lamonica, George Blanda, and Ken Stabler for 15 years. The fact that he was still standing was a bit of a medical miracle.
University of Miami center/linebacker Jim Otto anchored the first Oakland Raider team at center in 1960. "Double Zero" was drafted in the American Football League but finished in the NFL Hall of Fame after his record-setting Raider career. Along with several other notable local athletes, Otto was a guest at the Kids Town Hall at Stanford.

Oh where are we going? Oh where have we been? Our hush-a-bye angel, she's safe and tucked in. I drive around town, while
you sit and watch the rain. There's what you think with your heart and what I feel with my brain. For those who plant
nothing but the seeds of the falling there is a phone booth in heaven that no one is calling. It sits on a highway that
leads nowhere. I'll drop you a line next time I find myself there. Remembering them days, how we wore our weakness well.
There's some say that heaven can't exist without hell, well if the proof's in the pudding, and that axiom's true, somehow
the heart of the matter escaped me and you. For those who plant nothing but the seeds of the falling there is a phone
booth in heaven that no one is calling. Though the ghosts of redemption might whisper odd promises, I for one don't put
much faith in them specters. Now the blueprint for sorrow is just to put off the hurt 'til the price of tomorrow becomes
more than love's worth. 'Til what's begged and what's stole is just the hollow remains of some beautiful failure that we
cling to in vain. For those who plant nothing but the seeds of the falling there is a phone booth in heaven that no one is
calling. The truest word heard there is the word that's unspoken 'cause you can't mend what the Good Lord designed to be
broken. Oh where are we going? My darling oh where? Our sweetheart's in dreamland, please let her stay there. We are two
