She is set to join a slew of stars in Disney's take on the Christmas classic The Nutcracker, including the likes of Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman.

And in a new teaser for the movie, Keira Knightley is unrecognisable as she dons an eccentric ensemble and huge bright pink wig to transform into the Sugar Plum Fairy.

The actress, 32, is worlds apart from her usually sleek red carpet glamour, instead favouring an outlandish style when it comes to her faux locks and a strikingly pale complexion complete with pastel-hued make-up.

Keira is seen sporting an elaborate costume for her latest role, slipping into a structured frock that boasts ribbon shoulders and a fitted bodice, before billowing out around her in a layered petticoat skirt.

Pulling a slew of animated faces, Keira is seen taking centre stage in the upcoming release, set to hit the big screen in November 2018. She joins a stellar cast including Morgan Freeman, Matthew Macfadyen and British stars Jack Whitehall, Miranda Hart and Richard E. Grant.

Interstellar star Mackenzine Foy will play Clara, the little girl the movie focuses on.

She finds herself entering a magical world in her hope to find and retrieve a one-of-a-kind key that will help her to unlock a bevy of gifts bestowed to her by her late mother.

It comprises of four realms: the Land of Snowflakes,Land of Flowers, the Land of Sweets and the ominous Fourth Realm, that belongs to the tyrant Mother Ginger played by Mirren.

Clara's journey takes her there, as it holds the key she has been searching, but it seems her mission won't go without its setbacks, with the trailer teasing: 'The legend you know has a dark side.'

Like Knightley, Mirren seems to undergo a huge transformation in the film to take on the role of Mother Ginger. Ditching her usually elegant appearance, Mirren is seen sporting fiery red locks and scarred face paint to hint at her character's evil nature.

Brandishing a sword, she is seen crouched down surrounded by an army of mice.

Disney's latest release The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is an adaptation of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

The first time Knightley had worked with Disney was back in 2006 when she appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as Elizabeth Swan. She had auditioned for the role at just 17, making her way to Los Angeles for the first time.

Speaking on the Jimmy Kimmel show back in 2014, Keira recalled: 'They put me up at the Four Seasons, which was the poshest hotel I had ever been inside at that time, and I stole the slippers and I think I still have them.

'Disney flew me out, Disney put me up.'

Knightley then returned to Pirates of the Caribbean for its second film, At World's End, the following year in 2007, and later made a cameo appearance in its latest installment Dead Men Tell No Tales this year.

As well as The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, Keira has two more films in post-production; Colette and the Aftermath and she is currently filming for Berlin, I Love You.
