On the Polish-German border officials were preparing on Thursday for the former communist country to join the EU's passport-free travel zone.
Border controls along the old Iron Curtain from the Baltic Sea to the Adriatic cease to exist from midnight on Thursday.
The entry of nine nations into the EU's Schengen area means citizens can travel by land or sea between 24 European nations from Portugal to Poland, Iceland to Estonia without facing border checks.
As a condition for joining, the new members have tightened controls on their borders with non-EU nations and linked into an information exchange system for police and border guards around the EU.
"The one-stop control will be abolished, but we are well equipped to guarantee the monitoring of the borders in the area around the borders in the future,'' said Jens Schobranski, the press officer for Federal police in Frankfurt/Oder.
However some residents did have concerns.
"It's going to be difficult for the police to control, but I hope everything is going to be fine,'' said a German citizen.
Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Malta joined the EU in 2004, but have had to wait before gaining access to the frontier-free zone pending reforms to bring standards of their police and border guards in line with EU norms.
Travellers from outside the EU will be able to move freely within the extended zone on a visa obtained from any one of the member nations.
Among the changes expected Friday, controls will fade away on the busy land crossings between Germany and Poland.
Air passengers flying between the old and new EU member states will continue to face passport controls, although they too are scheduled to disappear on March 30.
The Schengen agreement is named after the village in Luxembourg where it was signed in 1985 by France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands to allow citizens to travel freely between them.

A German combat support ship rescued more than a hundred migrants and refugees in the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday, in an area north of the Libyan coast.

Marie Magdalene "Marlene" Dietrich (/mɑːrˈleɪnəˈdiːtrɪk/, German pronunciation: [maɐˈleːnə ˈdiːtʁɪç]; 27 December 1901 – 6 May 1992) was a German-American actress and singer.
Dietrich maintained popularity throughout her unusually long show business career by continually re-inventing herself, professionally and characteristically. Her performance as Lola-Lola in The Blue Angel (1930), directed by Josef von Sternberg, brought her international fame resulting in a contract with Paramount Pictures. The entry of nine nations into the EU's Schengen area means citizens can travel by land or sea between 24 European nations from Portugal to Poland, Iceland to Estonia without facing border checks.
As a condition for joining, the new members have tightened controls on their borders with non-EU nations and linked into an information exchange system for police and border guards around the EU.
"The one-stop control will be abolished, but we are well equipped to guarantee the monitoring of the borders in the area around the borders in the future,'' said Jens Schobranski, the press officer for Federal police in Frankfurt/Oder.
However some residents did have concerns.
"It's going to be difficult for the police to control, but I hope everything is going to be fine,'' said a German citizen.
Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Malta joined the EU in 2004, but have had to wait before gaining access to the frontier-free zone pending reforms to bring standards of their police and border guards in line with EU norms.
Travellers from outside the EU will be able to move freely within the extended zone on a visa obtained from any one of the member nations.

Air passengers flying between the old and new EU member states will continue to face passport controls, although they too are scheduled to disappear on March 30.

STORYLINE:
A German combat support ship rescued more than a hundred migrants and refugees in the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday, in an area north of the Libyan coast.
Mostly from African countries, the 105 were rescued from a rubber boat after more than 12 hours at sea by the 'Frankfurt am Main.'
The ship is part of a European Union military operation in the southern and central Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR MED) which is aimed at identifying, capturing and disposing of vessels used by migrant smugglers or traffickers.
In emergency cases any ships that are part of the operation will also undertake rescue operations.

After that they will take place in the accommodation area, where they still stay until they are handed over to other national authorities."

STORYLINE:
A German combat support ship rescued more than a hundred migrants and refugees in the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday, in an area north of the Libyan coast.
Mostly from African countries, the 105 were rescued from a rubber boat after more than 12 hours at sea by the 'Frankfurt am Main.'
The ship is part of a European Union military operation in the southern and central Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR MED) which is aimed at identifying, capturing and disposing of vessels used by migrant smugglers or traffickers.
In emergency cases any ships that are part of the operation will also undertake rescue operations.

Border controls along the old Iron Curtain from the Baltic Sea to the Adriatic cease to exist from midnight on Thursday.
The entry of nine nations into the EU's Schengen area means citizens can travel by land or sea between 24 European nations from Portugal to Poland, Iceland to Estonia without facing border checks.
As a condition for joining, the new members have tightened controls on their borders with non-EU nations and linked into an information exchange system for police and border guards around the EU.
"The one-stop control will be abolished, but we are well equipped to guarantee the monitoring of the borders in the area around the borders in the future,'' said Jens Schobranski, the press officer for Federal police in Frankfurt/Oder.
However some residents did have concerns.
"It's going to be difficult for the police to control, but I hope everything is going to be fine,'' said a German citizen.
Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Malta joined the EU in 2004, but have had to wait before gaining access to the frontier-free zone pending reforms to bring standards of their police and border guards in line with EU norms.
Travellers from outside the EU will be able to move freely within the extended zone on a visa obtained from any one of the member nations.
Among the changes expected Friday, controls will fade away on the busy land crossings between Germany and Poland.
Air passengers flying between the old and new EU member states will continue to face passport controls, although they too are scheduled to disappear on March 30.

In emergency cases any ships that are part of the operation will also undertake rescue operations.

Serial Killer - Fritz Honka (German serial killer) documentary
Fritz Honka (31 July 1935 -- 19 October 1998) was a German serial killer. Between 1970 and 1975, he killed at least four prostitutes from Hamburg's red light district, keeping the bodies in his flat. At 5 ft 5 in (1.65 m), Fritz Honka was extremely sensitive about his height. He liked his women shorter, and he also liked them toothless, to alleviate his fears of mutilation during oral sex. He found relief with aging prostitutes from Hamburg's red light district, killing at least four of them in his small attic room in the Zeißstraße 74 of Ottensen, Hamburg. Fritz Honka (31 July 1935 -- 19 October 1998) was a German serial killer. Between 1970 and 1975, he killed at least four prostitutes from Hamburg's red light district, keeping the bodies in his flat.
At 5 ft 5 in (1.65 m), Fritz Honka was extremely sensitive about his height. He liked his women shorter, and he also liked them toothless, to alleviate his fears of mutilation during oral sex. He found relief with aging prostitutes from Hamburg's red light district, killing at least four of them in his small attic room in the Zeißstraße 74 of Ottensen, Hamburg. Disposal was a problem, given Honka's size and basic laziness. He kept the bodies in his flat, and fortified himself with alcohol against the stench. When neighbours griped about unpleasant smells, he doused the place with quarts of cheap deodorant.
On 15 July 1975, the mummified remains were found by firemen after a fire in the house. Honka was not present, being on shift as a night watchman. He was arrested when he returned home. In custody, Honka said he killed the women after they mocked his preference for oral sex over "straight" intercourse. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, the maximum possible under German law.
Honka was released from prison in 1993 and spent his last years under the name of Peter Jensen in an nursing home. He died in a hospital in Langenhorn, Hamburg on 19 October 1998.
German director Andreas Schnaas has said that his film Violent Shit series is very loosely based on the exploits of Honka, who is mentioned in Violent Shit II, which states he was once cellmates with the fictional serial killer Karl Berger.

At 5 ft 5 in (1.65 m), Fritz Honka was extremely sensitive about his height. He liked his women shorter, and he also liked them toothless, to alleviate his fears of mutilation during oral sex. He found relief with aging prostitutes from Hamburg's red light district, killing at least four of them in his small attic room in the Zeißstraße 74 of Ottensen, Hamburg. Disposal was a problem, given Honka's size and basic laziness. He kept the bodies in his flat, and fortified himself with alcohol against the stench. When neighbours griped about unpleasant smells, he doused the place with quarts of cheap deodorant.
On 15 July 1975, the mummified remains were found by firemen after a fire in the house. Honka was not present, being on shift as a night watchman. He was arrested when he returned home. In custody, Honka said he killed the women after they mocked his preference for oral sex over "straight" intercourse. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, the maximum possible under German law.
Honka was released from prison in 1993 and spent his last years under the name of Peter Jensen in an nursing home. He died in a hospital in Langenhorn, Hamburg on 19 October 1998.
German director Andreas Schnaas has said that his film Violent Shit series is very loosely based on the exploits of Honka, who is mentioned in Violent Shit II, which states he was once cellmates with the fictional serial killer Karl Berger.
