Berlin (/bərˈlɪn/, German: [bɛɐ̯ˈliːn]) is the capital of Germany and one of the 16 states of Germany. With a population of 3.5 million people, it is the second most populous city proper and the seventh most populous urban area in the European Union. Located in northeastern Germany on the banks of Rivers Spree and Havel, it is the centre of the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, which has about six million residents from over 180 nations. Due to its location in the European Plain, Berlin is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. Around one-third of the city's area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes.
First documented in the 13th century and situated at the crossing of two important historic trade routes, Berlin became the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg (1417–1701), the Kingdom of Prussia (1701–1918), the German Empire (1871–1918), the Weimar Republic (1919–1933) and the Third Reich (1933–1945).Berlin in the 1920s was the third largest municipality in the world. After World War II, the city was divided; East Berlin became the capital of East Germany while West Berlin became a de facto West German exclave, surrounded by the Berlin Wall (1961–1989) and East Germany territory. Following German reunification in 1990, Berlin was once again designated as the capital of united Germany.
An air force, also known in some countries as an air army, is in the broadest sense, the national military organization that primarily conducts aerial warfare. More specifically, it is the branch of a nation's armed services that is responsible for aerial warfare as distinct from an army, navy, or a marine corps. Typically, air forces are responsible for gaining control of the air, carrying out strategic and tactical bombing missions, and providing support to land and naval forces.
The term "air force" may also refer to a tactical air force or numbered air force, which is an operational formation either within a national air force or comprising several air components from allied nations. Air forces typically consist of a combination of fighters, bombers, helicopters, transport planes and other aircraft.
Many air forces are also responsible for operations of the military space, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), and communications equipment. Some air forces may command and control other air defence assets such as anti-aircraft artillery, surface-to-air missiles, or anti-ballistic missile warning networks and defensive systems. Some nations, principally Russia, the former Soviet Union and countries who modelled their militaries along Soviet lines, have an air defence force which is organizationally separate from their air force.
The Berlin Blockade (24 June 1948 – 12 May 1949) was one of the first major international crises of the Cold War. During the multinational occupation of post–World War II Germany, the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway, road, and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control. The Soviets offered to drop the blockade if the Western Allies withdrew the newly introduced Deutsche mark from West Berlin.
In response, the Western Allies organized the Berlin airlift to carry supplies to the people of West Berlin, a difficult feat given the city's population. Aircrews from the United States Air Force, the British Royal Air Force, the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force, the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and the South African Air Force flew over 200,000 flights in one year, providing to the West Berliners up to 8,893 tons of necessities each day, such as fuel and food. The Soviets did not disrupt the airlift for fear this might lead to open conflict.

In the final days of the Second World War the German general Walther Wenck was ordered to attack the advancing Russians with his 12th army to liberate Berlin. Facing the hopeless Situation he refused to obey the Führer's order, instead he created an escape corridor out from the ruined city together with the remains of the 9th Army. His destination was the US occupied territory in the West, where he wanted to surrender. For the general the Battle of Berlin was not a battle, but a rescue operation. After he had saved more than 200,000 refugees from the city Wenck crossed the river Elbe aboard the last boat on 7 May 1945. CAUTION! I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be co...
Presented by American Airlines and written by Stanley Washburn, Jr. and shot by Agnew Fisher, AIRLIFT TO BERLIN presents the story of the Berlin Airlift of 1948. It was made before the resolution of the Berlin Blockade, and demonstrated the resolve of those involved in the Lift to see it succeed. Just prior to the Berlin Blockade, American Airlines had begun passenger service to Berlin, and so the airline was intimately involved in the lift and the evacuation of some civilians from the city. The film shows the movement of supplies from Rhein Mein into the besieged city by Douglas C-54 Skymasters. The British and Allies maintained their own corridor as part of the lift. Tempelhof Airport is seen at the 3:40 mark. The film also shows unique vistas of the ruined city of Berlin, which at thi...

Welcome to Berlin, the capital city of Germany. The first documentation of Berlin appears in the 13th century, and it has a long history of importance—it’s been the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg and the Kingdom of Prussia, among others. The lengthy history encompassing the city often manifests in its eclectic collection of architecture, which you should certainly include on your Berlin tour. From the towering classical lines of Charlottenburg Palace, built for the Hohenzollern family in the 17th century, to the sleek mirrored sides of the Bahn Tower, you’re bound to find plenty to look at in the city’s downtown area. Fancy a real German lager? Stop by Prater Garten for a brew—built in 1837, it’s one of the handful of buildings that has survived both World Wars. You can sit ou...

Travel video about destination Berlin in Germany. Berlin is Germany's modern capital city, a fascinating European metropolis with a dramatic history in which contemporary architecture merges with the imposing character of a centuries-old city. The Nokolai Quarter was built by the DDR government as a sort of old town, a European Disneyland for the city's 750th anniversary, a popular area with 'new' medieval buildings that display various guilds and stone statues that surround the city's oldest church. We travel to nearby Potsdam, a city of castles and gardens and with an old town that features a lively market atmosphere. When the monarchy settled there, so did their armies and with them came craftsmen, merchants and artists from many countries. The castle-like Nauener Tor leads to the Rus...

Berlin, the capital of Germany, lies on the banks of the River Spree. The city has an eclectic mix of architectural styles; everything from the modern dome of the Reichstag to that of the old Berlin Cathedral. The Chapel of Reconciliation is the spiritual heart of the Berlin Wall Memorial. The DDR Museum shows what life was like in East Germany during Socialist rule. Checkpoint Charlie was the Cold War's most famous border crossing; today the adjacent museum describes the clever ways in which Berliners defected from East to West. Berlin's East Side Gallery is one of the largest outdoor art exhibits in the world. The Holocaust Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of World War II. Rolling out before the Brandenburg Gate are the lawns and canals of the Tiergarten. Highlight here inclu...

License Video: dissolve.com/products?media_type=video&producer;=Pete+R&sort;_by_date=true Last month, I went to Germany alone. I entered the country as lonely as a solo traveler could be. I ate alone, drank alone, and walked alone. But along the way, I met people, made new friends and rekindled old ones. By the time I left the country, I was no longer alone. I had the opportunity to be hosted by several German friends around the country, I partied with them, drink with them, and hung out with them. I experienced the alternative culture in Berlin. I lost my bag in Cologne (http://blog.bucketlistly.com/post/132467427542/bag-stolen-germany-cologne). I celebrated my Birthday with a Pool match and a rap battle concert in Dresden. Subheim's third album, Foray, is not for the faint-hearted. An attentively crafted LP with emphasis upon clarity and enveloping warmth, Foray is driven by a progressive subtlety, yet supported by an underbelly of sometimes forlorn, and at other times, disturbing emotion. Moving away from the orchestral ensembles and soundtrack explorations of his second album, Subheim pursues a more minimal approach, taking a much darker turn to deep ambient textures blended with the added realism of field recordings.
