The Damned (1985) Phantasmagoria

By the time the Damned found themselves on a major label after nine years of ups, downs, and all-arounds, a big change had taken place: Captain Sensible, with both his own solo successes and other pressures coming to bear, decided to depart. Keyboardist Roman Jugg took over the guitar, while Bryn Merrick remained on bass and Vanian and Scabies continued doing their thing. The first fruit of this new Damned, Phantasmagoria, doesn't match up to the excellent variety and performance level on Strawberries, but still has a lot to show while at the same time exploring new territory for the group. The cover and artwork seem to ally the Damned even more closely with goth rock than before, but Vanian thankfully has never seen fit to simply ape those clichés, steering his own powerful path. Similarly, the music can be moody but never without its own distinct energy and fire -- more a Cramps sense (if not sound) of loving the dark than anything, but with a clean, modern sheen and just enough Hammer horror. "Street of Dreams" makes for a powerful, anthemic opener, with some fine Scabies drumming. "Is It a Dream," the one song with a Sensible co-writing credit, is yet another fantastic Vanian vocal showcase in a career of many. The really killer tracks include "Shadow of Love," a semi-Morricone-style mood-out quick shuffle with haunting guitar from Jugg, and "Grimly Fiendish," a funny bit of spooky psychedelia not all that far off from where the Dukes of Stratosphear would end up a couple of years later. Phantasmagoria concludes with the surging instrumental "Trojans," a strong number that showed the Damned had lots of life in them yet. by Ned Raggett

The Barracudas (1988) Drop Out with the Barracudas

The Barracudas is an English-Canadian band that formed in the late 1970s and is now based in England. The band's original line-up consisted of Jeremy Gluck (vocals), Robin Wills (guitar and vocals), Starkie Phillips (bass and vocals) and Adam Phillips (drums); but this formation was disrupted before the recording of the band's first 7" single when both the Phillips' left.
The band is notable for their summer 1980 hit single "Summer Fun", which started with an excerpt from a spoof 1960s advertisement for the Plymouth Barracuda and included dialogue of announcers having difficulty pronouncing the word barracuda. The single reached number 37 in the UK Singles Chart, it has been described as "fun" with an attitude that can't be faulted.
The band lasted until 1981 with a final performance in Madrid, however they have reformed on more than one occasion since that time.

The Damned (1987) The Light At The End of the Tunnel

Anyone expecting a fully organized compilation from this double-disc effort will be sorely disappointed; while the years for release dates are mentioned, the sources for many of the releases aren't, leaving neophytes to the Damned a bit high and dry. Happily, an appreciative and detailed essay from one Herb Fenstein (more likely Chiswick label boss Roger Armstrong writing under a pseudonym, as he did in the liner notes to the CD version of Machine Gun Etiquette) helps. Even without the chronological organization, Light is still a great overview of the first ten years of the band's career, especially given the sheer amount of labels that they'd been on over the years (at least five, if not more!). The selection is, for the most part, quite on the money; while those who feel the group fell off dramatically with the Phantasmagoria and Anything albums will think them over-represented, it's still definitely the Damned at their best from track to track. Early punk breakouts like "Neat Neat Neat" and "New Rose" as well as turn-of-the-'80s standards such as "Plan 9 Channel 7," "Smash It Up," and "I Just Can't Be Happy Today" make a case for the band's early days. The Black Album is mostly ignored, but the sidelong "Curtain Call" thankfully is included, giving Vanian his well-deserved showcase. Later numbers like "Ignite," "Lovely Money," "Grimly Fiendish," and the smash single "Eloise" demonstrate that far from fading away, the Damned just found other ways to make their mark. Add to this a slew of rarities -- the studio cover of the Beatles' "Help!," "Rabid (Over You)," "Disco Man," and some alternate mixes of other numbers -- and Light remains the best place for those new to the Damned to start. Comprehensive and perfectly entertaining all at once. ~~ Ned Raggett

The Damned (1986) Anything

After Captain Sensible left the Damned in 1984 when his solo career took off with the freak success of his single "Happy Talk," Dave Vanian took over the creative reins of the group, and he began nudging their music in a direction that reflected his growing interest in the goth movement. the Damned's flirtation with goth led to them signing a major label deal for the first time and enjoying one of their biggest commercial successes with the 1985 album Phantasmagoria.

The Professionals (1981) I Didn't See It Coming

Steve Jones & Paul Cook, both ex-members of the Sex Pistols, founded this punk band in 1979. Split Up in 1982. The announcement of Steve Jones & Paul Cook's new group, The Professionals, was coupled with news of the debut single in July, "Just Another Dream" (Virgin Records). It was to be followed by a 10 track album "Join The Professionals" in August.
The single failed to chart despite healthy sales. ITV's Saturday morning teenage magazine programme, "Fun Factory", aired the promotional video. Filmed by Julien Temple, the video depicted the trio superimposed as giants around famous London landmarks, (Paul drumming on the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral, a giant Steve standing on Nelson's Column). A record retailer confirmed on the show that "Just Another Dream" had been a top seller the previous week.

The New York Dolls (2000) Actress: Birth of the New York Dolls

All of the members of the New York Dolls played in New York bands before the band formed in late 1971. Guitarists Johnny Thunders and Rick Rivets, bassist Arthur Kane, and drummer Billy Murcia were joined by vocalist David Johansen. Early in 1972, Rivets was replaced by Syl Sylvain and the group began playing regularly in Lower Manhattan, particularly at the Mercer Arts Center. Within a few months, they had earned a dedicated cult following, but record companies were afraid of signing the Dolls because of their cross-dressing and blatant vulgarity.
Late in 1972, the Dolls embarked on their first tour of England. During the tour, drummer Murcia died after mixing drugs and alcohol. He was replaced by Jerry Nolan. After Nolan joined the band, the Dolls finally secured a record contract with Mercury Records. Todd Rundgren -- whose sophisticated pop seemed at odds with the band's crash-and-burn rock & roll -- produced the band's eponymous debut, which appeared in the summer of 1973. The record received overwhelmingly positive reviews, but it didn't stir the interest of the general public; the album peaked at number 116 on the U.S. charts. The band's follow-up, Too Much Too Soon, was produced by the legendary girl group producer George "Shadow" Morton. Although the sound of the record was relatively streamlined, the album was another commercial failure, only reaching number 167 upon its early summer 1974 release.

Sex Pistols (2002) Sexbox 1 (3 CDs Boxset)

Amidst the chaos that was the Sex Pistols, it’s often overlooked just what a great band they are, and what great records they made. The Sex Pistols are no ordinary band; their story is long and complicated, and not without its casualties. Without them popular culture in the last 30+ years would be very, very different. The Pistols didn’t just kick down doors; they kicked them off the wall. For a band who (really) only released one album and four singles, they spawned a sea of imitators; and still do to this day. Not bad for a band that supposedly couldn’t play. Yeah right! The Sex Pistols could certainly play; one listen to their ferocious slab of raw rock and roll will soon tell you that.
Despite claims from New York, the Sex Pistols are the true originators of punk; no one else had their attitude, balls, or honesty. The Pistols were inspired by anger and poverty, not art and poetry. “An imitation from New York, you’re cheese and chalk…”

Pinhead Gunpowder - 4 Álbuns

Bill and Mike were in one of the bands who rehearsed at the House-O-Toast, my old house, while I tried to sleep. They had their hands full playing in that band and one or two other bands each, but they still pestered me, saying we should play music together. So late at night, after all the other bands had finished rehearsing, we started working out songs. Not to form a new band, but just as a release, without the worries or restrictions.

That was the early part of 1990, an exiting time in the East bay. A time of new energy and rebirth. Basically 1989 had destroyed everything and people were just starting to come back out to pick up the pieces. I didn't have a steady band at the time, and wasn't ready to start that again in the east bay. I was biding time until I left town, filling in on drums for Billie's band when their regular drummer couldn't make it, occasionally playing second drums in Blatz while Billie played second guitar. When Billie's band left on tour I tagged along as roadie, then got dropped off in Arcata looking to make a new band and a fresh start. Continues on official home page...

Newton Neurotics - 2 CDs + 1 Single...

As The Newtown Neurotics, the band began their career playing punk heavily indebted stylistically to The Clash and The Ramones. Over the course of the 1980s, the band dropped the "Newtown" from its name and simply became The Neurotics; along with the name change came a stylistic broadening, including slower tempos and horn arrangements. They released several albums on noted UK postpunk label Jungle Records. Lead singer and guitarist Steve Drewett took openly socialist stances in his lyrics throughout the course of the band's career and currently displays an anarcho-syndicalist sticker on his guitar. When the bassist, Colin Dredd, came down with pleurisy, he left the band; Mac (Travis Cut /The Pharaohs /The Skabilly Rebels)was brought in to play bass for some farewell shows (at which the band's entire catalogue was played), and the band called it quits in October 1988. Drewett went on to form an Afro punk band called the Indestructible Beat. Although the Indie Beats were disbanded in 1995, Steve Drewett is known to do occasional solo gigs.
More recently, the Newtown Neurotics reformed for a few reunion shows in London & Brighton leading up to Blackpool's 2006 Wasted and 2008 Rebellion punk festivals, their biggest British audiences to date. A new rhythm section of David 'Gravy' Walsh (Drums) and Adam 'Smithy' Smith (Bass) (Both from Harlow Newtown) have been backing Steve Drewett since 2007, including an appearance in the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool for the 2009 Rebellion Festival.
In 2010 Steve Drewett made his first US appearance, playing at The Big Takeover magazine's 30th Anniversary festival.

Guitar Gangsters - 4 Albuns...

"Captain Oi!" Mark Brennan is fighting the corner for British post punk guitar "street rock" and needs two more tracks to complete his Underground Rockers vinyl compilation on Link Records. So he turns to the former guitarist (Pete Ley) and bass player (Phil Ley) of the Stones influenced London band Under The Gun and puts them in the studio one Saturday afternoon with The Business drummer Micky Fairbairn. The result was Gotta Get Out Of Here, When The Razor Cuts and Everybody Wants To Be My Friend – the latter two songs providing Mark with the two killer tracks he needed to open the album. All he needed now was a name for the band… What he needed was a name that lived up to his vision of the emerging wave of guitar bands filling the void left by the demise of punk – Guitar Gangsters fitted perfectly and seemed ideal for a guitar band whose personalities were probably irrelevant. After all, this would be Guitar Gangsters only ever release! Sitting alongside Mega City Four, The Sect and The Crack, Guitar Gangsters were in good company on the compilation but the two GG tracks grabbed the attention and the fact that nobody knew who the band were added to the interest. So never slow to miss an opportunity, Mark invited the band to record an album.

Dead Boys (1998) All This And More

The Dead Boys evolved out of the band Rocket From The Tombs and were originally called Frankenstein. When the band members relocated to New York City in July 1976, they adopted the Dead Boys moniker which came from the RFTT song "Down In Flames".
Moving to New York City at the encouragement of Joey Ramone, the Ramones' lead singer, the Dead Boys quickly gained notoriety for their outrageous live performances. Lewd gestures and profanity were the norm. On more than one occasion, lead singer Stiv Bators slashed his stomach with his mic stand. They frequently played at the legendary rock club CBGB and in 1977 they released their debut album, Young, Loud and Snotty, produced by Genya Ravan. Their song "Sonic Reducer" is often regarded as one of the classics of the punk genre, with Allmusic calling it "one of punk's great anthems."
Sire Records pressured the group to change their look and sound to appeal more to the U.S. mainstream (which had yet to embrace punk on the level seen in the UK) and this contributed to Dead Boys breaking up in 1979. Several 1979 performances were featured in the 1980 film, D.O.A.. A few months after the breakup the band had to reunite to record a live album and thus fulfill their contractual obligations. To exact revenge on the label, Bators purposely sang off mic and the resulting recording was unusable. When the material eventually surfaced on Bomp! Records, Bators had re-recorded the vocals in a studio.
