Reporters Without Borders (RWB), or Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF), is a France-based international non-profit, non-governmental organization that promotes and defends freedom of information and freedom of the press. The organization has consultant status at the United Nations.
Reporters Without Borders has two primary spheres of activity: one is focused on Internet Censorship and the New Media, and the other on providing material, financial and psychological assistance to journalists assigned to dangerous areas. Its missions are to:
Reporters Without Borders was founded in 1985 by Robert Ménard, Rémy Loury, Jacques Molénat and Émilien Jubineau, in Montpellier, France. Its head office is in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris. RWB also maintains offices in Berlin, Brussels, Geneva, Madrid, Rome, Stockholm, Tunis, Vienna, and Washington, D.C.
A journalist is a person who collects, writes, or distributes news or other current information. A journalist's work is called journalism. A journalist can work with general issues or specialize in certain issues, however, most journalists tend to specialize, and by cooperating with other journalists produce journals that span many topics. For example, a sports journalist covers news within the world of sports, but this journalist may be a part of a newspaper that covers many different topics.
A reporter is a type of journalist who researches, writes, and reports on information to present in sources, conduct interviews, engage in research, and make reports. The information-gathering part of a journalist's job is sometimes called reporting, in contrast to the production part of the job such as writing articles. Reporters may split their time between working in a newsroom and going out to witness events or interview people. Reporters may be assigned a specific beat or area of coverage.
Borders are geographic boundaries of political entities or legal jurisdictions, such as governments, sovereign states, federated states, and other subnational entities. Some borders—such as a state's internal administrative border, or inter-state borders within the Schengen Area—are open and completely unguarded. Other borders are partially or fully controlled, and may be crossed legally only at designated border checkpoints and border zones may be controlled. Mostly contentious, borders may even foster the setting up of buffer zones.
In the past, many borders were not clearly defined lines, but were neutral zones called marchlands. This has been reflected in recent times with the neutral zones that were set up along part of Saudi Arabia's borders with Kuwait and Iraq (however, these zones no longer exist). In modern times, the concept of a marchland has been replaced by that of the clearly defined and demarcated border. For the purposes of border control, airports and seaports are also classed as borders. Most countries have some form of border control to regulate or limit the movement of people, animals, plants, and goods into or out of the country. Under international law, each country is generally permitted to define the conditions that have to be met by a person to legally cross its borders by its own laws, and to prevent persons from crossing its border when this happens in violation of those laws.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is today unveiling its new video campaign, “War reporters.” Its release coincides with the publication of RSF’s 50th book in the “100 photos for press freedom” series – this one dedicated to the work of Robert Capa. Created by the advertising agency BETC (Production Stink and Director Owen Trevor), this video highlights the urgency of supporting photoreporters, without whom we would never know the realities of war. Let’s support those who risk their lives every day to keep us informed and provide us with independent images that are very different from the official ones served up by governments. As the photoreporter James Nachtwey said: “I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony. The events I have recorded should not be forgotten and must ...

To ‘celebrate' the 20th Birthday of Reporters Without Borders Belgium, dictators from around the world prepared a special 'Happy Birthday’ surprise. They can't sing, but they can still silence our voices.

Journalists killed, bloggers imprisoned, censorship..., the overall level of freedom of information violations continues to be very high and the situation is still worrying in 2013 as proved by the annual round-up published on December 13th, 2013 by Reporters Without Borders. Reporters Without Borders and its agency BETC denounce this alarming observation with their new campaign : Great People. By staging the propaganda by the enemies of press freedom, they remind with irony that without independent journalists, you would have to content yourself with this kind of "information". Made in collaboration with Rita Films and Green United Music, the campaign will be broadcasted on the major French TV channels and on the Internet from December 21st.
Reporters Without Borders reports 65 journalists were killed in 2017 while on the job.

Syria is now the most dangerous country in the world for journalists. According to Reporters Without Borders, over 110 news providers have been killed inside Syria since the conflict began in March 2011 and at least 60 are counted as detained, abducted, or missing. This deadly environment means that journalists must balance their mission to tell the story with concerns for their own safety. Rania Abouzeid, an award-winning freelance journalist with 15-years' experience covering the Middle East, is one of the few reporters who has braved this climate, covering Syria from inside the country since the uprising broke out in March 2011. During this period, Abouzeid delivered critical breaking news on the insurgency, while also poignantly narrating the human side of the conflict. Abouzeid's wo...

Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based media network, marks its 21st anniversary on Wednesday, amid calls by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt for its closure. This year's anniversary comes as Mahmoud Hussein, one of the network's journalists remains in an Egyptian jail for over 300 days. Hussein, an Egyptian national based in Qatar, was detained while on holiday in December 2016. He was accused of "incitement against state institutions and broadcasting false news with the aim of spreading chaos". Al Jazeera has rejected all the accusations against him and calls for his immediate release. A number of human rights and press freedom groups have joined Al Jazeera in condemning Mahmoud's ongoing detention. 'Al Jazeera cannot be shut down' Hussein's detention was the latest i...
The 2017 World Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) scored Russia as 148 out of 180 countries across the world as a result of further state control over mass media. Although pockets of freedom of published expression exist – particularly though not exclusively through social media – Russia’s media is still pliant, suffers from self-censorship and lacks investigative zeal. Svetlana Pasti outlines the state of Russian media today. What is the role of media and journalism in Russia? How are Russian journalists most commonly recruited and what is the shape of their career trajectory? How do independent journalists understand freedom of media and how do they practice it?
Hong Kong's press was once the most free in Asia, but many believe it is under attack from the central government. Hong Kong's press was once rated the most free in Asia. Today, it's 61st in the Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index, down from 18th in 2002. Free press advocates believe Beijing is trying to muzzle its critics and fear the situation will get worse.
