(July 2014) I've been wanting to see this for years! After the monument was damaged in the earthquake of 2012, I was afraid it would never reopen. Almost two years later, the repairs have been completed and the Washington Monument is once again open to tourists!

Washington Monument
The Washington Monument is an obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to commemorate George Washington, once commander-in-chief of the Continental Army and the first American president. Standing almost due east of the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial, the monument, made of marble, granite, and bluestone gneiss, is both the world's tallest stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk, standing 554 feet 7 11⁄32 inches (169.046 m) tall. It is the tallest monumental column in the world if all are measured above their pedestrian entrances, but two are taller when measured above ground, though they are neither all stone nor true obelisks.
Construction of the monument began in 1848, and was halted from 1854 to 1877 due to a lack of funds, a struggle for control over the Washington National Monument Society, and the intervention of the American Civil War. Although the stone structure was completed in 1884, internal ironwork, the knoll, and other finishing touches were not completed until 1888. A difference in shading of the marble, visible approximately 150 feet (46 m) or 27% up, shows where construction was halted and later resumed with marble from a different source. The original design was by Robert Mills, an architect during first half of the 19th century, but he suspended his colonnade, proceeding only with his obelisk, whose flat top was altered to a pointed marble pyramidion in 1884. The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1848; the first stone at the 152-foot level was laid August 7, 1880, the capstone was set on December 6, 1884, and the completed monument was dedicated on February 21, 1885. It officially opened October 9, 1888. Upon completion, it became the world's tallest structure, a title previously held by the Cologne Cathedral. The monument held this designation until 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was completed in Paris, France.

A monument is a type of structure that was explicitly created to commemorate a person or important event, or which has become important to a social group as a part of their remembrance of historic times or cultural heritage, or as an example of historic architecture. The term 'monument' is often applied to buildings or structures that are considered examples of important architectural and/or cultural heritage.
Etymology
The origin of the word "monument" comes from the Latin moneo, monere, which means 'to remind', 'to advise' or 'to warn', suggesting a monument allows us to see the past thus helping us visualize what is to come in the future. In English the word "monumental" is often used in reference to something of extraordinary size and power, as in monumental sculpture, but also to mean simply anything made to commemorate the dead, as a funerary monument or other example of funerary art.
Creation and functions
Monuments have been created for thousands of years, and they are often the most durable and famous symbols of ancient civilizations. Prehistoric tumuli, dolmens, and similar structures have been created in a large number of prehistoric cultures across the world, and the many forms of monumental tombs of the more wealthy and powerful members of a society are often the source of much of our information and art from those cultures. As societies became organized on a larger scale, so monuments so large as to be difficult to destroy like the Egyptian Pyramids, the Greek Parthenon, the Great Wall of China, Indian Taj Mahal or the Moai of Easter Island have become symbols of their civilizations. In more recent times, monumental structures such as the Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower have become iconic emblems of modern nation-states. The term monumentality relates to the symbolic status and physical presence of a monument.

Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as "Washington", "the District", or simply "D.C.", is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.
The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. Named in honor of George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District.
Washington had an estimated population of 672,228 as of July 2015. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington metropolitan area, of which the District is a part, has a population of over 6 million, the seventh-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country.

THE DISTRICT
"The District" is a Washington D.C. based timelapse project I decided to take on since I've lived in the area my entire life and I think it has beauty and architecture that needs to be seen. While shooting "The District" of course I ran into a few issues. Weather is typically the most important aspect of any timelapse project but parking and tourists were the biggest speed bumps while filming from April-August. Most major cities have high rise / skyscrapers but D.C. is very limited to the height of buildings which makes you think more and get more creative with your shots. You do have to map every little shot so you can execute it properly. Most shots in "The District" were shot 2-4 separate times due to weather or bad research on my end. "The District" is a Washington D.C. based timelapse project I decided to take on since I've lived in the area my entire life and I think it has beauty and architecture that needs to be seen.
While shooting "The District" of course I ran into a few issues. Weather is typically the most important aspect of any timelapse project but parking and tourists were the biggest speed bumps while filming from April-August. Most major cities have high rise / skyscrapers but D.C. is very limited to the height of buildings which makes you think more and get more creative with your shots. You do have to map every little shot so you can execute it properly. Most shots in "The District" were shot 2-4 separate times due to weather or bad research on my end.
A lot of people message me about permits or Park / Federal police that may have issues with me shooting. When you have a lot of motion controlled gear set up next to monuments / parks you have to expect some attention. I never really had any of those things. I've run into some situations in the past but nothing major like getting arrested or ticketed.

Number eight, Library of Congress. It is the largest library in the world. The magnificent building houses approximately 90 million archives materials.
Number seven, Lincoln Memorial. Dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, 16th US President and a great leader. Completed in 1922, it is modeled after Greek temples.
Number six, Supreme Court. Among the country's most important institutions, you can take a tour to learn about its history and inner workings.
Number five, cherry blossoms. During the springtime, Washington DC is full of stunning cherry blossoms. This is a great time to visit the city.
Number four, National Cathedral. It is the most well known US cathedral. This beautiful building has been the site for many national memorial services.
Number three, The Capitol, a remarkable neoclassical landmark. Recognized around the world, this is where the US Senate and House of Representatives meet.

THE DISTRICT
"The District" is a Washington D.C. based timelapse project I decided to take on since I've lived in the area my entire life and I think it has beauty and architecture that needs to be seen. While shooting "The District" of course I ran into a few issues. Weather is typically the most important aspect of any timelapse project but parking and tourists were the biggest speed bumps while filming from April-August. Most major cities have high rise / skyscrapers but D.C. is very limited to the height of buildings which makes you think more and get more creative with your shots. You do have to map every little shot so you can execute it properly. Most shots in "The District" were shot 2-4 separate times due to weather or bad research on my end. A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. "The District" is a Washington D.C. based timelapse project I decided to take on since I've lived in the area my entire life and I think it has beauty and architecture that needs to be seen.
While shooting "The District" of course I ran into a few issues. Weather is typically the most important aspect of any timelapse project but parking and tourists were the biggest speed bumps while filming from April-August. Most major cities have high rise / skyscrapers but D.C. is very limited to the height of buildings which makes you think more and get more creative with your shots. You do have to map every little shot so you can execute it properly. Most shots in "The District" were shot 2-4 separate times due to weather or bad research on my end.
A lot of people message me about permits or Park / Federal police that may have issues with me shooting. When you have a lot of motion controlled gear set up next to monuments / parks you have to expect some attention. I never really had any of those things. I've run into some situations in the past but nothing major like getting arrested or ticketed.
