Kathmandu(/ˌkɑːtmɑːnˈduː/;Nepali pronunciation: [kɑʈʰmɑɳɖu]) is the capital and largest municipality of Nepal. It also hosts the headquarters of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). It is the only city of Nepal with the administrative status of Mahanagar (Metropolitan City), as compared to Upa-Mahanagar (Sub-Metropolitan City) or Nagar (City). Kathmandu is the core of Nepal's largest urban agglomeration located in the Kathmandu Valley consisting of Lalitpur, Kirtipur, Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur and a number of smaller communities. Kathmandu is also known informally as "KTM" or the "tri-city". According to the 2011 census, Kathmandu Metropolitan City has a population of 975,453 and measures 49.45 square kilometres (19.09 sq mi).
The city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,400 metres (4,600 ft) in the bowl-shaped Kathmandu Valley of central Nepal. It is surrounded by four major hills: Shivapuri, Phulchoki, Nagarjun, and Chandragiri. Kathmandu Valley is part of three districts (Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur), has the highest population density in the country, and is home to about a twelfth of Nepal's population.

Two hours later after the world's longest run-around, being asked for bribe money, and paying to have the package wrapped in fabric and sealed with red wax stamps, I finally get my package off to the United States from Kathmandu, Nepal. Save yourself the misery (I actually had a translator with me and it was still a mess) and just check your gifts through with your luggage. I can't because I'm on my Big World Adventure and still have one more year on the road before stopping in the States for a bit. Check out what I am doing at www.30DaysofAdventure.com

Jagannath is one of the oldest temples on the square and the original building dates back to 1560, as does the adjacent Taleju Temple. The Shiva Parvati Temple was built in the early years of the Shah Dynasty. Its five-sectioned portal-like frame features text that is believed to be ancient Nepalese writing. Kumari Chowk i...

Situated west of Kathmandu, Swayambhunath is one of the country’s most im...

The trembling began just before noon. Suddenly, violent jolts reduced buildings to smithereens, burying residents under the rubble. The devastation caused by the worst earthquake to hit Nepal in 80 years was catastrophic - more than 8,000 people dead and hundreds of thousands left homeless. One year on, many of those who survived still live in makeshift shelters. Some have gone into debt to pay for medical care. Many are demanding to know why the government is not doing more to help. 101 East returns to Nepal to find out how the earthquake is still taking a toll on this fragile nation.
