Axel Munthe
Axel Martin Fredrik Munthe (31 October 1857 – 11 February 1949) was a Swedish-born physician and psychiatrist, best known as the author of The Story of San Michele, an autobiographical account of his life and work.
Axel Munthe had a multinational character and spoke several languages (Swedish, English, French, Italian fluently, and German at least passably), growing up in Sweden, attending medical school and opening his first practice in France. He was married to an English aristocrat, and spent most of his adult life in Italy. Munthe had a philanthropic nature, often treating the poor without charge, and risking his life on several occasions to offer medical help in times of war, disaster, or plague. He was a tireless advocate of animal rights, purchasing land to create a bird sanctuary near his home in Italy, advocating bans on painful traps, and keeping pets as diverse as an owl and a baboon, as well as many different types of dog. His writing is light-hearted, being primarily memoirs drawn from his real-life experiences, but often tinged with sadness or tragedy, and often using dramatic license. He primarily wrote about people and their idiosyncrasies, portraying the foibles of both the rich and the poor, but also about animals.

Das einfache Mädchen is a 1957 West German musical comedy film directed by Werner Jacobs and produced by Artur Brauner. It starred Caterina Valente, Rudolf Prack and Ruth Stephan.
Plot
Caterina Bastiani, a talented young actress, is offered the leading role in a musical. This is her big break but the author of the novel on which the musical is based is less than pleased about this adaption — and he does not think much of Caterina. Caterina meets a girl by accident who has applied to work for the author as a maid. She takes the girl's place in order to prove her talent as an actress and shows up at the author's home as the new maid herself.

Kindheit und Jugend Der junge Kronprinz war sehr sensibel und sollte auf Wunsch des Vaters eine harte militärische Ausbildung erhalten. Der Sohn sollte ein guter Soldat, begeisterter Jäger und braver Katholik werden. Generalmajor Leopold Graf Gondrecourt wurde als Erzieher bestimmt. Der Haudegen ließ das Kind stundenlang in Regen und Kälte exerzieren, weckte ihn auch gelegentlich mit Pistolenschüssen und ließ ihn in den Wäldern des Lainzer Tiergartens plötzlich alleine, das Kind in Panik versetzend. Erst auf Druck seiner Mutter wurde diese Art der Ausbildung beendet und es wurden seine naturwissenschaftlichen Neigungen gefördert, da sie Joseph Graf Latour von Thurmburg zu seinem Erzieher bestimmte. So kam beispielsweise der deutsche Tierforscher Alfred Brehm an den Hof, um ihn zu unterrichten. “Nachts auf den Strassen“ a.k.a. “The Mistress“ (1952) Eng Hard Sub Dir: Rudolf Jugert. Cast: Hans Albers, Hildegard Knef, Marius Goring This interesting West German film was made when the country was in the first phase of reconstruction but still under the occupation of the Allied powers. The vignettes of German life at the time include such historically valuable details as the presence of the US military police as well as ample signs of reconstruction of the autobahns requiring frequent detours, which play an important part in this drama/thriller. The main character is an elderly, married truck driver (Hans Albers) with a newly-wed daughter. During his tours from Bavaria to Frankfurt he has a fateful encounter with a hitch-hiking young woman (Hildegard Knef), who is already engaged in a liaison with a black marketeer (Marius Goring). Albers was a great German actor with a big film repertoire who was often cast in aristocratic roles (cf. “Münchhausen” (1943). It is all the more remarkable, therefore, that he was able to play this truck driver so convincingly. Hildegard Knef, too, gives a brilliant performance, first ensnarling the old man according to the scheme plotted by her lover, but in the end becoming seriously involved with Albers. She makes this transition very convincingly, demonstrating what an accomplished actress she was. Marius Goring was an English actor who also made some films on the Continent. Usually typecast as a villain in British films, he plays the same type of role here in his usual assured manner. It is interesting to compare Albers in this role with his slightly younger French contemporary Jean Gabin, who also plays a family man and truck driver in Verneuil’s film “Des gens sans importance” (1956), which features similarly a fateful encounter with a young woman. “Nachts auf den Straßen” is a well-crafted film, with an interesting story, excellent performances by some of the best German actors of the time, and beautiful photography which captures the fascinating background of a Germany in transformation but still scarred from the war. This is a forgotten film which I think deserves to be known by a broader international public, hence the English hard subs. -

Kindheit und Jugend Der junge Kronprinz war sehr sensibel und sollte auf Wunsch des Vaters eine harte militärische Ausbildung erhalten. Der Sohn sollte ein guter Soldat, begeisterter Jäger und braver Katholik werden. Generalmajor Leopold Graf Gondrecourt wurde als Erzieher bestimmt. Der Haudegen ließ das Kind stundenlang in Regen und Kälte exerzieren, weckte ihn auch gelegentlich mit Pistolenschüssen und ließ ihn in den Wäldern des Lainzer Tiergartens plötzlich alleine, das Kind in Panik versetzend. When the film “La Vera Storia di Rosemarie” by Rudolf Jugert was first released in Italy in 1959 the Committee for the Theatrical Review of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities rated it has as VM16: not suitable for children under 16. In addition, the committee imposed the removal of this scene. I wonder if the scene would be still censored today.

Und zu allem Überfluss leidet seine ehemalige Flamme Sabine an einer unheilbaren Krankheit.
Lex Barker, der hier die Hauptrolle bekleidet, hatte im gleichen Jahr seinen großen Durchbruch in Deutschland mit "Der Schatz im Silbersee". Der Rest ist Geschichte. Neben Barker spielt Senta Berger, die noch ganz am Anfang ihrer Karriere stand.

This interesting West German film was made when the country was in the first phase of reconstruction but still under the occupation of the Allied powers. The vignettes of German life at the time include such historically valuable details as the presence of the US military police as well as ample signs of reconstruction of the autobahns requiring frequent detours, which play an important part in this drama/thriller.
The main character is an elderly, married truck driver (Hans Albers) with a newly-wed daughter. During his tours from Bavaria to Frankfurt he has a fateful encounter with a hitch-hiking young woman (Hildegard Knef), who is already engaged in a liaison with a black marketeer (Marius Goring). Albers was a great German actor with a big film repertoire who was often cast in aristocratic roles (cf. “Münchhausen” (1943). It is all the more remarkable, therefore, that he was able to play this truck driver so convincingly. Hildegard Knef, too, gives a brilliant performance, first ensnarling the old man according to the scheme plotted by her lover, but in the end becoming seriously involved with Albers. She makes this transition very convincingly, demonstrating what an accomplished actress she was. Marius Goring was an English actor who also made some films on the Continent. Usually typecast as a villain in British films, he plays the same type of role here in his usual assured manner.
It is interesting to compare Albers in this role with his slightly younger French contemporary Jean Gabin, who also plays a family man and truck driver in Verneuil’s film “Des gens sans importance” (1956), which features similarly a fateful encounter with a young woman.
“Nachts auf den Straßen” is a well-crafted film, with an interesting story, excellent performances by some of the best German actors of the time, and beautiful photography which captures the fascinating background of a Germany in transformation but still scarred from the war.
This is a forgotten film which I think deserves to be known by a broader international public, hence the English hard subs.

Hildegard Knef, too, gives a brilliant performance, first ensnarling the old man according to the scheme plotted by her lover, but in the end becoming seriously involved with Albers. She makes this transition very convincingly, demonstrating what an accomplished actress she was. Marius Goring was an English actor who also made some films on the Continent. Usually typecast as a villain in British films, he plays the same type of role here in his usual assured manner.
It is interesting to compare Albers in this role with his slightly younger French contemporary Jean Gabin, who also plays a family man and truck driver in Verneuil’s film “Des gens sans importance” (1956), which features similarly a fateful encounter with a young woman.
“Nachts auf den Straßen” is a well-crafted film, with an interesting story, excellent performances by some of the best German actors of the time, and beautiful photography which captures the fascinating background of a Germany in transformation but still scarred from the war.
This is a forgotten film which I think deserves to be known by a broader international public, hence the English hard subs.
