Santiago (/ˌsæntiˈɑːɡoʊ/; Spanish pronunciation: [sanˈtjaɣo]), also known as Santiago de Chile [sanˈtjaɣo ðe ˈtʃile], is the capital and largest city of Chile. It is also the center of its largest conurbation. Santiago is located in the country's central valley, at an elevation of 520 m (1,706 ft) above mean sea level.
Founded in 1541, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city has a downtown core of 19th century neoclassical architecture and winding side-streets, dotted by art deco, neo-gothic, and other styles. Santiago's cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, lined by parks such as Parque Forestal. The Andes Mountains can be seen from most points in the city. These mountains contribute to a considerable smog problem, particularly during winter. The city outskirts are surrounded by vineyards and Santiago is within a few hours of both the mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
Santiago's steady economic growth over the past few decades has transformed it into a modern metropolis. The city is now home to a growing theater and restaurant scene, extensive suburban development, dozens of shopping centers, and a rising skyline, including the tallest building in Latin America, the Gran Torre Santiago. It includes several major universities, and has developed a modern transportation infrastructure, including a free flow toll-based, partly underground urban freeway system and the Metro de Santiago, South America's most extensive subway system. Santiago is the cultural, political and financial center of Chile and is home to the regional headquarters of many multinational corporations. The Chilean executive and judicial powers are located in Santiago, but Congress meets in nearby Valparaíso.

Vanessa Hudgens
Vanessa Anne Hudgens (born December 14, 1988) is an American actress and singer. Hudgens rose to prominence playing Gabriella Montez in the High School Musical series. Hudgens has also appeared in various films and television series for the Disney Channel. She had her feature film debut in the 2003 film Thirteen, a teenage drama in which Hudgens had a supporting role. She had mainstream success following the release of the High School Musical trilogy, and her relationship with co-star Zac Efron was heavily publicized. Her appearance in the series helped make her a household name. Songs from the films also charted worldwide, with the song "Breaking Free" peaking inside the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. This led to Hudgens releasing her debut album, V, on September 26, 2006 which entered the Billboard 200 at number 24, and was later certified gold. Her second album, Identified, was released on July 1, 2008 in the United States.
Since the release of her albums and the High School Musical franchise, Hudgens has focused on her acting career. She has appeared in the films Bandslam (2009), Beastly (2011), Sucker Punch (2011), Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012), Spring Breakers (2013), and Machete Kills (2013). She has also played the title role in the Broadway musical Gigi in 2015, and the role of Rizzo in Grease: Live in 2016.

Santa Lucia is an urban park smack dab in the middle of Santiago and it’s a popular hangout in the afternoons and weekends. The hike is a pleasant one with lots to see, including fountains, spiralling staircases, defensive forts, sprawling gardens, and cool lookout points.
Lastarria is a neighbourhood located just east of Santa Lucia hill and it was once the bohemian hub of the city.Today it is very popular with tourists as it offers an outdoors flea market, an international mix of cafes and restaurants, & live music.
For panoramic views of the city, ride the funicular to the top of San Cristobal Hill.
Plaza de Armas is the heart of Santiago’s historic centre. There are lots of benches under the cover of palm trees, and the place is buzzing with activity. The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in the historic centre of Santiago overlooking the square. The construction you see today dates back to the year 1800, since previous cathedrals were destroyed in earthquakes.
Santiago’s Central Market is the place to come for the freshest food. You'll find rows of restaurants serving up everything from grilled fish to ceviche. We really like our ceviche, so we found a place serving exactly that.

Just underneath Palacio de La Moneda, you’ll find Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, which is a cultural centre featuring exhibitions, design shops, and a small selection of cafes.
Bellavista is a cultural hub with lots of theatres, cinemas, cafes, museums, and restaurants. The most famed home in the neighbourhood is La Chascona, the home of the famed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

We had 4 days to discover what the city was all about, so we set out to visit the main attractions, sample Chilean food (Comida Chilena), and explore various neighborhoods on foot. Santa Lucia is an urban park smack dab in the middle of Santiago and it’s a popular hangout in the afternoons and weekends. The hike is a pleasant one with lots to see, including fountains, spiralling staircases, defensive forts, sprawling gardens, and cool lookout points.
Lastarria is a neighbourhood located just east of Santa Lucia hill and it was once the bohemian hub of the city.Today it is very popular with tourists as it offers an outdoors flea market, an international mix of cafes and restaurants, & live music.
For panoramic views of the city, ride the funicular to the top of San Cristobal Hill.
Plaza de Armas is the heart of Santiago’s historic centre. There are lots of benches under the cover of palm trees, and the place is buzzing with activity. The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in the historic centre of Santiago overlooking the square. The construction you see today dates back to the year 1800, since previous cathedrals were destroyed in earthquakes.
Santiago’s Central Market is the place to come for the freshest food. You'll find rows of restaurants serving up everything from grilled fish to ceviche. We really like our ceviche, so we found a place serving exactly that.

The Museo Histórico Nacional is located in the Palacio Real Audiencia. It contains around twelve thousand exhibits that feature Chile’s history from pre-Columbian times right up to the twentieth century. Strikingly dressed in black and white uniforms and brown caps, the soldiers of the guard march across the Plaza De La Constitution towards the La Moneda Palace, an elongated, strictly classical building whose white façade looks almost kitsch with the blue sky as its backdrop. Following restoration work, General Augusto Pinochet moved in and it has been the seat of government ever since. Dictatorship transformed into democracy! Santiago De Chile, the capital of Chile, is dignified, modest and European-looking and also lively, modern and full of Latin temperament. The Plaza De Armas is the heart of the city and the historic centre of colonial Santiago that contains the city’s most important buildings. The city of Valparaiso or, Paradise Valley, is around a hundred and twenty kilometres from the capital of Santiago De Chile on the Pacific coast. The city’s development was closely connected with its harbour which brought it wealth and power. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, escalators have rattled up and down the steep hills of the harbour city with forty five hills flanking the bay, each of them covered with a number of tiny wooden huts. Only a short journey on a gravel road and the Atacama Desert begins. At its centre it is the driest desert in the world where the forces of nature have turned it into an extraordinary landscape. The Atacama extends between the Pacific Ocean and the Cordilleras, an area of stone and sand that is perforated only by various frequently dried out salt lakes. For those ships that sailed around Cape Horn, Ancud represented a safe harbour on the journey north in which they could rest after sailing the stormy waters of the South Pacific. At a time when whales and seals were hunted in the Antarctic, Ancud served as a supply station along the route to the southern Polar sea. From the Atacama Desert in the north to as far as the stormy Tierra Del Fuego in the south, Chile is a country rich in contrast. Volcanoes, arid deserts, salt lakes, lively geysers, sandstone mountains and a cosmopolitan city. All of this is to be found in Chile, a country at the end of the world!

Here is a rather surprising excerpt from the second volume of Sewell's memoir regarding the filming of this program:
Kim having paid the bill said, 'How do you feel about the Pilgrimage to Compostella?' 'Oh that would be wonderful - I've done the Spanish half - I'd love to finish it. This time next year, I suppose?' 'No. If you want to do it you're off in four days' time.' It did not occur to me until much later that a more desirable candidate for presenter must have fallen by the wayside.
As the great feast of St James is on 25 July we flew to Compostella and did the pilgrimage backwards and without any kind of the intellectual or emotional preparation that I knew I needed. Nearly forty years had passed since my last exposure to Catholicism in all its ritual splendour and, privileged to be in the cathedral - access to which was denied to thousands of genuine pilgrims on the morning of the feast - I was overwhelmed, I think with grief. What I felt so powerfully was not exultation, ecstasy or rapture; it was pain, misery and guilt, my Catholic inheritance in reproach for my abandoning it. I was trapped with evidence of every belief that reason and my homosexuality had compelled me to relinquish. I could hardly draw breath and could not speak. I wept. I could not perform for the camera. For what seemed an age I could not even watch but stood, shaking, my back to this great Mass, my brow against the wall. First Aid attendants came but could not help and I could not explain. I do not know what the crew made of my behaviour, useless to them: I gave them no spontaneous commentary on the service, none of the excited looks expected, none of the bogus involvement in which presenters specialise.
As the deceitful exercise of the pilgrimage itself continued, I realised that I was profoundly affected by the faith of others, of all who had truly made the pilgrimage. French students told me of their final ritual after the cathedral celebrations and before their journey home - it was to go to the nearby coast, strip naked, burn the clothes in which they had walked so far, and swim; thus newly bathed and clothed the return hike could begin. I thought it a beautiful idea and much more than a symbolic practice, and the embrace of the warm sea on my nakedness as I swam out of sight into the Bay of Biscay seemed entirely spiritual. So too were my farewell kisses for three boys one morning in Burgos, two walking back to Germany, one to Switzerland, their boots worn very thin and second-hand, who told me of another custom - the exchange of boots; any pilgrim rich enough to buy new boots must leave his discards tied to a tree where they can be seen, for there is always another pilgrim on the road whose boots are in even worse condition. My young director, a man of occasionally prurient interests, instructed me to ask them if they masturbated on the pilgrimage, but when I refused, falteringly asked them himself - the word is common to both languages. I recall only my own appalled confusion, not their answers. My three kisses on our parting were those of ceremony, an old man much given to the sins of the flesh recognising in the young something devout and righteous that he too once had. And in Lourdes, that Benidorm, that Blackpool, that Disneyland of Catholicism, two comfortably adult women from the north of England rammed home the irrelevance of quotidian human behaviour and appetites with their absolute conviction that a miracle was possible for their companion, an old woman in a wheelchair, that if God chose to use them as the instrument of his intervention in her ills, he was not likely to be obstructed by the flaw of a random sin or two.
In churches, chapels and cathedrals I was appalled by the crew's downright disrespect for worshippers and unsuspecting clergy - the only way I could put an end to their clambering over altar rails to arrange their lights, microphones and camera angles was to walk out and refuse to return; as for pleading the significance of the Reserved Host, I might as well have attempted to explain a logarithm to a Hottentot. The director, having dug deeply into the how and what of my homosexuality, mistook my misery for sexual deprivation and, no doubt at vast expense, procured a blond American to join the crew and service me. I would not have it. I was insulted by this trivialising of my spiritual turmoil.
The programme, The Naked Pilgrim, won the Sanford St Martin Prize for religious broadcasting. If only you knew, I thought as Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor presented it.
