Robert Wilson (2 January 1907 – 25 September 1964) was a Scottish tenor. After beginning his career with the Rothesay Entertainers in Scotland, Wilson joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with whom he performed from 1931 to 1937. He then began a long solo career in concerts, radio, variety and recording, becoming known especially for his performances of Scottish songs.
Life and career[edit]
Wilson was born in Cambuslang. His father, Alexander, was a tailor, and his mother was Marion née McLurg. He trained at first as a draughtsman, then, in his twenties, as a professional singer in Glasgow. He initially performed for several seasons as part of the Rothesay Entertainers in Scotland. At the same time, he sang at Clan concerts and Scottish Festivals.[1]
In 1931, Wilson joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, at first in the chorus, understudying and occasionally performing the role of the Defendant in Trial by Jury and Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S. Pinafore. In 1932, he began to play the Defendant on a regular basis, and soon was also playing the small roles of First Yeoman in The Yeomen of the Guard and Francesco in The Gondoliers, and still substituting occasionally as Ralph. At the same time, he was in demand as a recording artist for Parlophone. In 1934, he was given the additional principal roles of Hilarion in Princess Ida and Nanki-Poo in The Mikado and moved up to Leonard Meryll in Yeomen, and Marco in The Gondoliers. In 1935–36 season, he continued to play the Defendant and shared the roles of Ralph, Nanki Poo, Leonard and Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance. That season he also sometimes played the role of Colonel Fairfax in Yeomen and Marco in The Gondoliers. He participated in the company's North American tours in 1934 and 1936. When Derek Oldham returned to the company in 1936, Wilson's roles were reduced to Defendant, Leonard and Francesco. He left the company in 1937.[1]
After this, Wilson became a solo artist, heading his own concert party singing Scottish ballads for several years on tour throughout Britain. He also continued in demand as a recording artist, signing with HMV in 1943. His recordings of such Scottish songs as "A Gordon for Me" and "Down in the Glen" were big sellers. He became a well-known variety performer and in the 1950s he was an early presenter of the White Heather Club and recorded with them.[2] He continued to tour into the 1960s.[1] Wilson's wife was named Margaret (née MacDonald), and they had two sons, Ian and Carey. Carey became a performer with Citizens Theatre in Glasgow.[citation needed]
Wilson died in 1964, never having fully recovered from a car accident the previous year.[

Alexander Knox
Alexander Knox (16 January 1907 – 25 April 1995) was a Canadian actor and author of adventure novels set in the Great Lakes area during the 19th century.
Life and career
Knox was born in Strathroy, Ontario and graduated from the University of Western Ontario. He later moved to Boston, Massachusetts to perform on the stage with the Boston Repertory Theatre. After the company folded following the stock market crash of 1929, Knox returned to London, Ontario where for the next two years he worked as a reporter for The London Advertiser before moving to London, England where, during the 1930s he appeared in several films. He starred opposite Jessica Tandy in the 1940 Broadway production of Jupiter Laughs and in 1944, he was chosen by Darryl F. Zanuck to star in Wilson, the biographical film about US President Woodrow Wilson, for which he won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. However, during the McCarthy Era, he was blacklisted by the Hollywood film studio bosses and he returned to Britain.

Created by MGM for American President Lines, "Departure" shows the round-the-world cruise of the SS President Wilson from San Francisco to the Orient and Europe in the late 1940s. A few other ships that were part of American President Lines (APL) are briefly shown as well. The SS President Cleveland and SS President Wilson were shining symbols of post war American technology, design and style, with streamline moderne styling. After leaving San Francisco, at 8:00, the ship arrives in Honolulu, and there is footage of surfing, leis, Waikiki Beach, and more. At 9 minutes, the ship arrives in Japan, with images including modern Tokyo and ancient temples. At 11:00, scenes of Hong Kong are shown, with American President Lines offices shown. At 12:20, Manila is shown in the Philippines. The war memorial is shown at 13 minutes. Singapore is seen at 13:00. Rubber tree plantations are seen at 14 minutes. At 14:59, Bangkok, Thailand is seen. At 15:30, Bombay India is shown as well as the Taj Mahal. At 16:30, Cairo Egypt is seen. The film then shifts to continental Europe, with images of Italy and Pompeii at 17:00, Rome, Venice, Paris at 19:00, and then a cruise homeward at 19:00 with a farewell party thrown. The film features some photography by Alfred T. Palmer, a famous cameraman and still photographer who worked extensively with the Dollar Steamship Lines. SS President Wilson was an American passenger ship originally ordered by the Maritime Commission (MC hull 687) during World War II, as one of the Admiral W. S. Benson-class Type P2-SE2-R1 transport ships. The ship was laid down on 27 November 1944 and was launched on 24 November 1947, completed and delivered to the Maritime Commission on 27 April 1948. Under the name SS President Wilson, she was bareboat chartered by the Maritime Commission to American President Lines. She was eventually sold to Oceanic Cruise Development, Inc. in 1973, and renamed Oriental Empress. The ship was eventually scrapped in 1984 American President Lines restarted its round-the-world passenger service shortly after the end of WWII, and launched the SS President Cleveland and SS President Wilson in 1946, which were advertised as "your American hotel abroad." In the 1950s, the company again expanded, building more ships; 11 were built between 1952 and 1954. These included C-4 class cargo ships. Also, a settlement was finally reached in the Dollar case. Rather than the Dollar family taking back the company, it was sold to a group of investors led by Ralph K. Davies for $18.3 million. At this time Davies also acquired control of American Mail Line with the aim of reintegrating it into APL. The increasing use of air travel meant that the company's passenger services had steadily been declining throughout the 1960s, and by 1973, the last APL liner, the SS President Wilson, completed her final round-the-world trip and was sold off. After beginning his career with the Rothesay Entertainers in Scotland, Wilson joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with whom he performed from 1931 to 1937. He then began a long solo career in concerts, radio, variety and recording, becoming known especially for his performances of Scottish songs. Life and career[edit] Wilson was born in Cambuslang. Robert Wilson (2 January 1907 – 25 September 1964) was a Scottish tenor. After beginning his career with the Rothesay Entertainers in Scotland, Wilson joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with whom he performed from 1931 to 1937. He then began a long solo career in concerts, radio, variety and recording, becoming known especially for his performances of Scottish songs.
Life and career[edit]
Wilson was born in Cambuslang. His father, Alexander, was a tailor, and his mother was Marion née McLurg. He trained at first as a draughtsman, then, in his twenties, as a professional singer in Glasgow. He initially performed for several seasons as part of the Rothesay Entertainers in Scotland. At the same time, he sang at Clan concerts and Scottish Festivals.[1]
In 1931, Wilson joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, at first in the chorus, understudying and occasionally performing the role of the Defendant in Trial by Jury and Ralph Rackstraw in H.M.S. Pinafore. In 1932, he began to play the Defendant on a regular basis, and soon was also playing the small roles of First Yeoman in The Yeomen of the Guard and Francesco in The Gondoliers, and still substituting occasionally as Ralph. At the same time, he was in demand as a recording artist for Parlophone. In 1934, he was given the additional principal roles of Hilarion in Princess Ida and Nanki-Poo in The Mikado and moved up to Leonard Meryll in Yeomen, and Marco in The Gondoliers. In 1935–36 season, he continued to play the Defendant and shared the roles of Ralph, Nanki Poo, Leonard and Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance. That season he also sometimes played the role of Colonel Fairfax in Yeomen and Marco in The Gondoliers. He participated in the company's North American tours in 1934 and 1936. When Derek Oldham returned to the company in 1936, Wilson's roles were reduced to Defendant, Leonard and Francesco. He left the company in 1937.[1]
After this, Wilson became a solo artist, heading his own concert party singing Scottish ballads for several years on tour throughout Britain. He also continued in demand as a recording artist, signing with HMV in 1943. His recordings of such Scottish songs as "A Gordon for Me" and "Down in the Glen" were big sellers. He became a well-known variety performer and in the 1950s he was an early presenter of the White Heather Club and recorded with them.[2] He continued to tour into the 1960s.[1] Wilson's wife was named Margaret (née MacDonald), and they had two sons, Ian and Carey. Carey became a performer with Citizens Theatre in Glasgow.[citation needed]
Wilson died in 1964, never having fully recovered from a car accident the previous year.[

Inaugurating a national drive for the sale of liberty bonds, President Wilson, his wife Edith, and mother-in-law, Mrs. W. H. Bolling, arrive in New York on Sept. 27, 1918. At Pennsylvania Railroad Station they are greeted by crowds and joined by the President's two daughters, Margaret Wilson and Eleanor McAdoo, as they enter a touring car en route to the Waldorf-Astoria. Views of flag-lined Fifth Avenue on the following day, with flags of the twenty-two Allied nations and banners supporting liberty bonds filling the Avenue. Emile Cartier, Belgian Minister to the United States, speaks at the dedication of the Altar of Liberty, an open-air structure in Madison Square designed by Thomas Hastings in support of the Liberty Loan effort; marching soldiers and band. On the south portico of the U.S. Treasury Building in Washington, D.C., Geraldine Farrar, member of the Metropolitan Opera Company, ceremonially sells bond to Secretary of the Treasury William Gibbs McAdoo as Leo S. Rowe, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, watches.

A few other ships that were part of American President Lines (APL) are briefly shown as well. The SS President Cleveland and SS President Wilson were shining symbols of post war American technology, design and style, with streamline moderne styling.
After leaving San Francisco, at 8:00, the ship arrives in Honolulu, and there is footage of surfing, leis, Waikiki Beach, and more. At 9 minutes, the ship arrives in Japan, with images including modern Tokyo and ancient temples. At 11:00, scenes of Hong Kong are shown, with American President Lines offices shown. At 12:20, Manila is shown in the Philippines. The war memorial is shown at 13 minutes. Singapore is seen at 13:00. Rubber tree plantations are seen at 14 minutes. At 14:59, Bangkok, Thailand is seen. At 15:30, Bombay India is shown as well as the Taj Mahal. At 16:30, Cairo Egypt is seen. The film then shifts to continental Europe, with images of Italy and Pompeii at 17:00, Rome, Venice, Paris at 19:00, and then a cruise homeward at 19:00 with a farewell party thrown.
The film features some photography by Alfred T. Palmer, a famous cameraman and still photographer who worked extensively with the Dollar Steamship Lines.
SS President Wilson was an American passenger ship originally ordered by the Maritime Commission (MC hull 687) during World War II, as one of the Admiral W. S. Benson-class Type P2-SE2-R1 transport ships. The ship was laid down on 27 November 1944 and was launched on 24 November 1947, completed and delivered to the Maritime Commission on 27 April 1948. Under the name SS President Wilson, she was bareboat chartered by the Maritime Commission to American President Lines. She was eventually sold to Oceanic Cruise Development, Inc. in 1973, and renamed Oriental Empress. The ship was eventually scrapped in 1984
American President Lines restarted its round-the-world passenger service shortly after the end of WWII, and launched the SS President Cleveland and SS President Wilson in 1946, which were advertised as "your American hotel abroad." In the 1950s, the company again expanded, building more ships; 11 were built between 1952 and 1954. These included C-4 class cargo ships. Also, a settlement was finally reached in the Dollar case. Rather than the Dollar family taking back the company, it was sold to a group of investors led by Ralph K. Davies for $18.3 million. At this time Davies also acquired control of American Mail Line with the aim of reintegrating it into APL.
The increasing use of air travel meant that the company's passenger services had steadily been declining throughout the 1960s, and by 1973, the last APL liner, the SS President Wilson, completed her final round-the-world trip and was sold off.

She was eventually sold to Oceanic Cruise Development, Inc. in 1973, and renamed Oriental Empress. The ship was eventually scrapped in 1984
American President Lines restarted its round-the-world passenger service shortly after the end of WWII, and launched the SS President Cleveland and SS President Wilson in 1946, which were advertised as "your American hotel abroad." In the 1950s, the company again expanded, building more ships; 11 were built between 1952 and 1954. These included C-4 class cargo ships. Also, a settlement was finally reached in the Dollar case. Rather than the Dollar family taking back the company, it was sold to a group of investors led by Ralph K. Davies for $18.3 million. At this time Davies also acquired control of American Mail Line with the aim of reintegrating it into APL.
The increasing use of air travel meant that the company's passenger services had steadily been declining throughout the 1960s, and by 1973, the last APL liner, the SS President Wilson, completed her final round-the-world trip and was sold off.

To the Bone is the fifth studio album by English recording artist Steven Wilson, released on 18 August 2017 on Caroline International. It was recorded two-and-a-half years after the release of Hand. Cannot. Erase. (2015), and one year after his mini-album, 4½ (2016).[1] According to Wilson, the album is inspired by the progressive pop records of his youth, such as Peter Gabriel's So, Kate Bush's Hounds of Love, Talk Talk's The Colour of Spring and Tears for Fears' The Seeds of Love.
History:
In late 2016, Wilson announced that he had returned to the studio to record his fifth album.[3] During the first months of 2017, Wilson released two work-in-progress studio clips to his YouTube channel. On 5 January, he released a clip of "Pariah" and on 12 February, he released a clip of "To the Bone", featuring harmonica player Mark Feltham.[4][5] Wilson continued to tease various images and small album details until 8 May when he revealed the track listing on his Instagram account and released the single "Pariah".[6][7] The following day on his Instagram, he announced the album and an upcoming 2018 European tour, and the following week, on 18 May, a music video was released for "Pariah".[8][9] Four further singles have been released to date: "The Same Asylum As Before", "Song of I", "Permanating" and "Refuge". A video for "Permanating" featuring a Bollywood dance troupe was released online on 21 July.
Critical reception:
To The Bone has received mostly positive reviews from critics. Metacritic, a review aggregator, has given the album a normalised rating of 78 out of 100, indicating "generally favorable reviews", based on reviews from 7 critics.[11] Uncut magazine stated "Wilson's fifth solo LP is a lush and ambitious piece of progressive pop music. Hitting on some heavy influences, including Peter Gabriel, Depeche Mode, Bends-era Radiohead, and Todd Rundgren's electronic ballads, this insistently melodic, 11-song set is an old-school, sum-of-its parts experience".[17][better source needed] Planet Rock rated the album five stars, commenting that "Steven Wilson delivers his progressive masterpiece".[14] Jordan Blum of Rebel Noise magazine said: "To the Bone is both a great album in its own right and a perfectly appropriate addition to Wilson's vast body of work".[18] Sputnikmusic rated the album 4.5/5, stating: "Steven Wilson proves that an artist can venture into uncharted musical waters, even 30 years into their career, for ambitious and vibrant results like these"
