On April 9, 1942, the United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) Bataan Command, headed by Maj. Gen. Edward P. King, surrender to the invading Japanese Imperial Army after several months of heavy fighting in Bataan Peninsula. Following their surrender, the over 70,000 Filipino and American POWs were made to march from Mariveles and Bagac, Bataan to San Fernando Train Station in Pampanga, where they were loaded into train boxcars and transported to Camp O'Donnell in Capas, Tarlac for internment.
Look back at the suffering, hardship, and sacrifice of our soldiers in Bataan and how Veterans Bank commemorated their courage and valor through the Bataan Freedom Trail and Ride for Valor events.

Death march
A death march is a forced march of prisoners of war or other captives or deportees with the intent to kill, brutalize, weaken and/or demoralize as many of the captives as possible along the way. It is distinguished in this way from simple prisoner transport via foot march. Death marches usually feature harsh physical labor and abuse, neglect of prisoner injury and illness, deliberate starvation and dehydration, humiliation and torture, and execution of those unable to keep up the marching pace. The march may end at a prisoner-of-war camp or internment camp, or it may continue until all the prisoners are dead (a form of "execution by labor", as seen in the Armenian genocide among other examples).
The signing of the Fourth Geneva Convention made death marches a form of war crime.

Death march (project management)
In project management, a death march is a project where the members feel it is destined to fail, or requires a stretch of unsustainable overwork. The general feel of the project reflects that of an actual death march because the members of the project are forced to continue the project by their superiors against their better judgment.
The fields whose project management practice first named these related phenomena are software development and software engineering. Other fields have since recognized the same occurrence in their own spheres and have adopted the name.
Death marches of the destined-to-fail type usually are a result of unrealistic or overly optimistic expectations in scheduling, feature scope, or both, and often include lack of appropriate documentation or relevant training and outside expertise that would be needed to do the task successfully. The knowledge of the doomed nature of the project weighs heavily on the psyche of its participants, as if they are helplessly watching themselves and their coworkers being forced to torture themselves and march toward death. Often, the death march will involve desperate attempts to right the course of the project by asking team members to work especially grueling hours (14-hour days, 7-day weeks, etc.) or by attempting to "throw (enough) bodies at the problem", often causing burnout.

Following their surrender, the over 70,000 Filipino and American POWs were made to march from Mariveles and Bagac, Bataan to San Fernando Train Station in Pampanga, where they were loaded into train boxcars and transported to Camp O'Donnell in Capas, Tarlac for internment.
Look back at the suffering, hardship, and sacrifice of our soldiers in Bataan and how Veterans Bank commemorated their courage and valor through the Bataan Freedom Trail and Ride for Valor events.

After the surrender of joint U.S. - Filipino forces at the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines on April 9th, 1942, the Japanese forced 76,000 exhausted prisoners of war to march to the Camp O’Donnell prison camp.
Accounts of the total distance of the march vary, but it was approximately 66 miles or 106 kilometers on foot.

On April 9, 1942, the United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) Bataan Command, headed by Maj. Gen. Edward P. King, surrender to the invading Japanese Imperial Army after several months of heavy fighting in Bataan Peninsula. Following their surrender, the over 70,000 Filipino and American POWs were made to march from Mariveles and Bagac, Bataan to San Fernando Train Station in Pampanga, where they were loaded into train boxcars and transported to Camp O'Donnell in Capas, Tarlac for internment.
Look back at the suffering, hardship, and sacrifice of our soldiers in Bataan and how Veterans Bank commemorated their courage and valor through the Bataan Freedom Trail and Ride for Valor events.

Death march
A death march is a forced march of prisoners of war or other captives or deportees with the intent to kill, brutalize, weaken and/or demoralize as many of the captives as possible along the way. It is distinguished in this way from simple prisoner transport via foot march. Death marches usually feature harsh physical labor and abuse, neglect of prisoner injury and illness, deliberate starvation and dehydration, humiliation and torture, and execution of those unable to keep up the marching pace. The march may end at a prisoner-of-war camp or internment camp, or it may continue until all the prisoners are dead (a form of "execution by labor", as seen in the Armenian genocide among other examples).
The signing of the Fourth Geneva Convention made death marches a form of war crime.
