Just as one person's trash is another person's treasure, a college art teacher from Taiyuan, in north China's Shanxi Province, is using industrial waste metal to create sculptures.
The 40-year-old Huang Qicai uses waste metals as the building blocks for his masterpieces. Huang has completed more than 200 iron sculptures over a decade, with roughly half of them having been sold.
"This horse sculpture is called The Last Unicorn. It weighs about half a ton and uses over 500 metal parts. Its hooves come from a discarded pommel horse. The double-fold eyelids make it more female. And here I put an old kitchen knife and wrench to form part of its body," said Huang
Huang Qicai used to make iron sculptures in Beijing. Since returning to his hometown, he rented a farmyard in order to continue making his sculptures. As a frequent visitor to local recycling centers, Huang has spent almost all of his earnings buying waste metal parts totaling hundreds of thousands of yuan.
"I believe every waste metal part contains the wisdom of its designers. They are works of art as they are. I want to use them to create something new, and make them alive again," he said.
Huang believes his sculptures bear witness to China's rapid and ongoing industrialization.
"The number of cars in China has increased rapidly in recent years, which has exacerbated problems like traffic congestion and air pollution. So I've used lots of scrap metal from old cars in my sculptures to mark the industrial age," said the art teacher.
Huang Qicai has recently been working on the 12 animal heads sculptures from traditional Chinese culture. He plans to include more cultural elements in his future works, and he also hopes to make mega sculptures as symbols for China's cities.

One of the most important aspects of Industrial Arts is still that while students design they ultimately realise a solution; learning the challenges involved with working with materials and also the challenges of small scale project management.
Some universities have doctoral programs in the Industrial Arts.

The Crucible
The Crucible is a 1953 play by the American playwright Arthur Miller. It is a dramatized and partially fictionalized story of the Salem witch trials that took place in the Province of Massachusetts Bay during 1692 and 1693. Miller wrote the play as an allegory of McCarthyism, when the U.S. government blacklisted accused communists. Miller himself was questioned by the House of Representatives' Committee on Un-American Activities in 1956 and convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to identify others present at meetings he had attended.
The play was first performed at the Martin Beck Theater on Broadway on January 22, 1953, starring E.G. Marshall, Beatrice Straight and Madeleine Sherwood. Miller felt that this production was too stylized and cold and the reviews for it were largely hostile (although The New York Times noted "a powerful play [in a] driving performance"). Nonetheless, the production won the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play. A year later a new production succeeded and the play became a classic. It is a central work in the canon of American drama.

Just as one person's trash is another person's treasure, a college art teacher from Taiyuan, in north China's Shanxi Province, is using industrial waste metal to create sculptures.
The 40-year-old Huang Qicai uses waste metals as the building blocks for his masterpieces. Huang has completed more than 200 iron sculptures over a decade, with roughly half of them having been sold.
"This horse sculpture is called The Last Unicorn. It weighs about half a ton and uses over 500 metal parts. Its hooves come from a discarded pommel horse. The double-fold eyelids make it more female. And here I put an old kitchen knife and wrench to form part of its body," said Huang
Huang Qicai used to make iron sculptures in Beijing. Since returning to his hometown, he rented a farmyard in order to continue making his sculptures. As a frequent visitor to local recycling centers, Huang has spent almost all of his earnings buying waste metal parts totaling hundreds of thousands of yuan.
"I believe every waste metal part contains the wisdom of its designers. They are works of art as they are. I want to use them to create something new, and make them alive again," he said.
Huang believes his sculptures bear witness to China's rapid and ongoing industrialization.
"The number of cars in China has increased rapidly in recent years, which has exacerbated problems like traffic congestion and air pollution. So I've used lots of scrap metal from old cars in my sculptures to mark the industrial age," said the art teacher.
Huang Qicai has recently been working on the 12 animal heads sculptures from traditional Chinese culture. He plans to include more cultural elements in his future works, and he also hopes to make mega sculptures as symbols for China's cities.

Industrial Arts is an umbrella term originally conceived in the late 19th century to describe educational programs which featured fabrication of objects in wood and/or metal using a variety of hand, power, or machine tools. Many also cover topics such as small engine repair and automobile maintenance, and all programs usually cover technical drawings—one or two semesters—as part of the curricula. Used as a definite educational term industrial arts dates from 1904 when Charles R. Richards of Teachers College, Columbia University, New York suggested to replace the phrase manual training.
In the United States Industrial Arts classes are colloquially known as "shop class"; these programs expose children to the basics of home repair, manual craftsmanship, and machine safety. Most Industrial Arts programs were established in comprehensive rather than dedicated vocational schools and focused on a broad range of skills rather than on a specific vocational training.
In New South Wales (NSW, Australia) Industrial Arts is still a key part of the high school curriculum. The term now describes a key study of technology that focuses on both engineering and industrial technologies. Additionally, design using the aforementioned technologies is now a key part of the Industrial Arts curriculum and has been since the mid-1980s when Technics was introduced into NSW high schools.
One of the most important aspects of Industrial Arts is still that while students design they ultimately realise a solution; learning the challenges involved with working with materials and also the challenges of small scale project management.
Some universities have doctoral programs in the Industrial Arts.
