Brazil (i/brəˈzɪl/; Portuguese: Brasil [bɾaˈziw] ), officially the Federative Republic of Brazil (Portuguese: República Federativa do Brasil, listen ), is the largest sovereign state in both South America and the Latin American region. It is the world's fifth-largest country, both by geographical area and by population. It is the largest Portuguese-speaking country in the world, and the only one in the Americas.
Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of 7,491 km (4,655 mi). It borders all other South American countries except Ecuador and Chile and occupies 47.3 percent of the continent of South America. Its Amazon River basin includes a vast tropical forest, home to diverse wildlife, a variety of ecological systems, and extensive natural resources spanning numerous protected habitats. This unique environmental heritage makes Brazil one of 17 megadiverse countries, and is the subject of significant global interest and debate regarding deforestation and environmental protection.

During the presidency of Lula Da Silva, billions of dollars in bribes were taken to allow construction companies to overcharge the government-owned oil company, Petrobras. Now, Brazil has corruption, but it's actually pretty good for a developing country. But the people of Brazil have come to expect more, and they have been left down. Current president, Dilma Rousseff, was chairwoman of Petrobras during the period of corruption, but no one knows whether Lula or Dilma were involved or aware. But Lula was under investigation before Rousseff appointed him to be her chief of staff, a move that means he can no longer be prosecuted by a normal court. I think this whole thing speaks very highly of Brazil. A reckoning had to come, and I'm pleased the citizens are holding the government account...

São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro used to be the only destination for foreign professionals coming to Brazil, but this scenario has changed over the past 10 years. The preparation for the 2014 World Cup and the oil exploitation on the Brazilian shores have been leading to a distribution of job offer throughout Brazil. Since Manaus has been chosen to host matches of the 2014 World Cup, a lot has been invested in infrastructure and services, specially regarding accommodation. Over the last four years, the Brazilian Northeast has been significantly increasing its consuming level. Shopping malls have grown 60% in two years, impulsing the local economy. The Brazilian central-west is a strong player in the agribusiness sector as it is one of the major exporters of commodities. As the three states com...

Here are 10 things done better in Brazil than anywhere else. Number 10. Unique sports. A popular pastime in Brazil is a friendly competition known as footvolley. In Brazil, health care is free — by law, everyone has a right to treatment, from organ transplants to sex-change operations. No one benefits more than the poor, and physicians are given incentives and paid up to three times more to work in the poorest areas of Brazil. As a result, infant mortality is down and life expectancy is up, but there are drawbacks. Offering so much has put a strain on the health system. Most of Brazils hospitals are considered substandard, with long waits for procedures. Worldfocus correspondent Edie Magnus and producer Megan Thomspon report from Brazil on the highs and lows of universal health care. Health Care in Brazil from "International Health Care Systems". Brazil has made rapid progress toward universal coverage of its population through its national health system, the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). Since its emergence from dictatorship in 1985, Brazil — which has the world's fifth-largest population and seventh-largest economy — has invested substantially in expanding access to health care for all citizens, a goal that is implicit in the Brazilian constitution and the principles guiding the national health system. Brazil's major and medium size metropolitan areas face increasing problems of water pollution. Coastal cities such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Recife suffer effects of upstream residential and industrial sewage contaminating feeder rivers, lakes, and the ocean. In 2000, only 35% of collected wastewater received any treatment. For example, the Tietê River, which runs through the São Paulo metropolitan area (17 million inhabitants), has returned to its 1990 pollution levels. Despite the support from the IDB, the World Bank and Caixa Econômica Federal in a US$400 million clean up effort, the level of dissolved oxygen has returned to the critical level of 1990 at 0 mg per liter due to increased levels of unregulated sewerage, phosphorus, and ammonia nitrogen discharged into the river. http://www.expedia.com/Rio-de-Janeiro.d178301.Destination-Travel-Guides The early morning in Rio de Janeiro brings quiet, misty coastlines and pink-purple sunrises. The Brazilian locals are up and about soon enough, piling onto the beautiful beaches and expressing themselves through artwork, dance, and the ubiquitous Rio de Janeiro partying. A Rio de Janeiro tour must stop at Christ the Redeemer, the ubiquitous statue that watches over the city from above the Tijuca National Forest. Take the cable car to the lookout point on Sugarloaf Mountain, the city’s iconic peak, and try not to look down – it’s a long way to drop! After a morning spent in nature, your Rio de Janeiro sightseeing should continue in the city proper. Join the sun worshippers at Copacabana, where you can stake out a pa...

On The Listening Post this week: Two years of political turmoil have revealed the depths of institutional corruption, political opportunism and - crucially - media power in Brazil. Over the past two years, Latin America's largest nation has witnessed one political convulsion after another, with former President Dilma Rousseff ousted from power a year ago, and her replacement Michel Temer now facing similar pressure. Coverage of the turmoil by Brazil's media, the majority of which is owned by historically powerful segments of society, has generated widespread accusations of foul play. The country's largest media house, Globo, is seen by many as having played the role of zealous activist rather than objective observer in its rolling, positive coverage of the anti-Dilma protests of 2016, and...

In 2014, our Great Decisions episode presented Brazil as a country full of hope, both as an economic powerhouse but also as a strong democracy with an important role to play in international affairs. Fast-forward to today's corruption scandals that served as a catalyst for the dual political and economic crisis and the country is unrecognizable. From 2014: "Brazil is the “B” in the acronym BRICS, five emerging economies once seen as soon-to-be superpowers. After economic troubles in the 1990s, Brazil has risen to new global prominence—drawing in more investment, working on global issues ranging from climate change to peacekeeping, and even hosting the 2016 Olympics." I'm sorry for suggesting
I'm reading the whitewhashed faces
I could use a connection
I'm watching the whitewashed faces
On a good night sent spinning
Knows to play it winning
Strawberry red twizzlers
I wanna know what's with her
In the sun lie pale lovers
Drink slow and slowly
Over each of us in our turn sat in line
And stuck to burn
She shines like a carnival
Swimming through my book of dreams
All I know is all you've learned
Is all I want to be
You're right I'm left You're right
In the morning goldfish dead in a bowl
Everybody is up on a pulpit all alone
This is your word of stone
Where were you when Rome was burning?
Who wants points well it's not worth it
I'm trying hard to answer the letter
