East Timor (i/ˌiːst ˈtiːmɔːr/) or Timor-Leste (/tiˈmɔːr ˈlɛʃteɪ/), Tetum: Timór Lorosa'e, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (Portuguese: República Democrática de Timor-Leste, Tetum: Repúblika Demokrátika Timór-Leste), is a sovereign state in Maritime Southeast Asia. It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island, within Indonesian West Timor. The country's size is about 15,410 km2 (5,400 sq mi).
East Timor was colonised by Portugal in the 16th century, and was known as Portuguese Timor until November 1975, when the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) declared the territory's independence. Nine days later, it was invaded and occupied by Indonesia and was declared Indonesia's 27th province the following year. The Indonesian occupation of East Timor was characterised by a highly violent decades-long conflict between separatist groups (especially FRETILIN) and the Indonesian military.

They became known as East Timor's stolen generation - around 4,000 children taken from their families in the 1980s and 1990s during Indonesia's brutal occupation. Some were conscripted into the Indonesian military; others taken by religious groups or state institutions. Indonesia calls them the "separated children" and denies they were taken by force. Now a local NGO is taking them back to East Timor - now an independent nation - for the first time. The BBC followed Alberto Mohamed, now 43, as he returns to track down his family. http://democracynow.org - While covering the United Nations climate summit, we speak with Constâncio Pinto, minister of commerce, industry and environment of Timor-Leste, or East Timor. East Timor was compared to Western Sahara for decades. Both countries were occupied in 1975, Timor by Indonesia and Western Sahara by Morocco. Both populations supported U.N. Security Council resolutions calling for referenda for self-determination, which Timor got in 1999 and voted overwhelmingly to become independent. The people of Western Sahara, however, are still calling for that referendum to take place. Minister Constâncio Pinto just came from East Timor, where on November 12 he was involved in the 25th anniversary observance of the Santa Cruz massacre, where the Indonesian military attacked, using ...
English/Nat At least three people have died in the latest outbreak of violence in East Timor between opponents and supporters of independence for the troubled territory. Witnesses said at least two people were killed as militiamen fired shots and hurled bombs at groups of rock-throwing separatists. Indonesian police sealed off large sections of the capital, Dili, following the bloody clashes, while frightened residents stayed indoors. The violence erupted just days before East Timor is expected to go to the polls in a U-N supervised referendum on independence. Emotions were running high on Thursday - the next to last day of campaigning for the referendum on East Timor's future status. Monday's U-N-supervised referendum will offer a choice between independence or remaining part of Ind...

Indonesian/Nat Campaigning for the referendum which will determine whether East Timor becomes independent or remains part of Indonesia began on Saturday. Many fear the campaigns which ends on August 30 will be marred by violence. But as the pro-Indonesian side gathered its supporters in Dili on Saturday there was a carnival atmosphere. Supporters gathered for the start of campaigning ahead of the ballot on the future of East Timor. These people are campaigning for East Timor to stay part of Indonesia. Indonesia invaded East Timor, a former Portuguese colony, in 1975 and annexed it the following year. For decades it was wracked by civil unrest, guerrilla warfare and human rights abuses. Tired of international condemnation of its rule, Indonesia said last January it w...

English/Nat In the multibillion dollar business of international aid, food is a weapon when it falls into the wrong hands - provoking battles, prolonging wars, luring desperate refugees out of hiding only to be slaughtered. So when the sky over the red ridges of East Timor rained rations, the shower signalled more than the United Nations simply tweaking the technique of air drops. It was a life-and-death new try to get food where it belongs - in the mouths of the unarmed and starving. The United Nations admitted Sunday that the humanitarian crisis in East Timor is much worse than expected. Most villages in the troubled territory are severely damaged. Fires are still burning in some villages. So people continue to starve in the jungle rather than risk returning to home...
The lush green mountains and rich, fertile soil of Maubisse in Timor Leste is perfect for growing vegetables. Constrained by old-fashioned farming practices though, Maubisse's farmers would be lucky to bring in US$100 per year. Now they are making that same amount in a week with a new focus on going organic and new farming techniques. The changes happened with the support of the International Labour Organization (ILO). Aware of the hardship the vegetable farmers were experiencing, the ILO built a partnership with the Government-run Institute for Business Support (IADE) and initiated the Business Opportunities and Support Services (BOSS) project. Australia is working closely with it's neighbour to improve the health of mothers and children. A mini-documentary following The Chain Reaction Project on their trip to Timor Leste. 100% shot on GoPro HERO 4 in 4K ------------------------------------------- The Chain Reaction Project (TCRP) is an NGO from Singapore that pairs adventure travel with philanthropy. In July 2015, they led a trip to Asia's youngest nation Timor Leste to support and raise funds for HIAM Health. HIAM dedicates itself to improving agriculture practices and combat malnutrition in Timor. Now with nearly half of the population under 15 years old, enormous resources need to be applied to education and health. TCRP also visisted a green school in Ma...

Dili lies on the northern coast of Timor Island, the easternmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Dili is the largest city, chief port and commercial center of East Timor and also is the newest Asian capital. Although there are not many tourist attractions in town but there are some interesting buildings like: The Government Palace, The Presidential Palace, And the headquarter of the Ministry of Defense. The most characteristic landmark is the Statue of Jesus that is constructed on a headland to the east of town. The statue is about 27m tall and stands on a globe of earth and the view from across the bay is spectacular. Of similar type but less famous is the Statue of John Paul II, located on the western side of the city. Among the few places of worship, two are note worthy: Motael Churc...

June 2006 Days before foreign peacekeepers arrived, journalist David O'Shea travelled to East Timor to chronicle its descent into chaos. His frontline report reveals what's really happening there. "Watch out for grenades. They're using the grenade launcher!", warns rebel leader and former police chief Alfredo Reinaldo, as government forces opened fire on them. First the army splintered after Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri sacked a third of the force for complaining about discrimination. Then Reinaldo's defection led to the police fracturing. The hope is that foreign peacekeepers will restore order but reuniting the country behind the government may prove much harder. As one woman states: "we need good leaders to govern this country otherwise these things will continue." Produced by S...

September 2009 Five Australian journalists were murdered in East Timor in 1975. Now 34 years later and prompted by the making of a new feature film, Balibo, the inquiry into the Balibo Five has begun. But was there a sixth victim? When journalist Roger East broke the story that 5 newsmen were murdered, he was determined to get justice. But the story was buried, along with Roger, who 2 months later was dragged to his death. Thousands of Australians were outraged by their government says Balibos producer John Maynard, who is bringing the story back to the fore. Will there be any justice for them? Sandalwood trees are evergreen
Cut them down
Plant coffee beans
Build no schools
Construct no roads
Mark them as fools
Let ignorance rule
Leave them stranded on their island
Treat them to the tune of silence
Red is the cross that covers out shame
Every Kingdom, every land
Has it's heart in the common man
Silently the tide shifts the sand
Bury my heart on East-Timor
In coral sands
On golden shores
Buried are those
Who lived their lives
No place to hide for
Father and child
Leave them stranded on their island
Treat them to the tune of silence
We shake the hands that kill and forgive
Every Kingdom, every land
Has its heart in the common man
Silently the tide shifts the sand
Bury my heart on East-Timor
On barren graves
Where flowers won't grow
Blooms our Red cross lovingly
This nightingale deed
So we can be free
Stranded on their island
This army of the silent
We toast our own goodwill and forget
Every kingdom, every land
Has its heart in the common man
