The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers and employees share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, here at home and around the world, through five key service areas:
Disaster Relief
The Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United States every year, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions. In these events, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to help families and entire communities get back on their feet. Although the Red Cross is not a government agency, it is an essential part of the response when disaster strikes. We work in partnership with other agencies and organizations that provide services to disaster victims.
Supporting America’s Military Families
The Red Cross helps military members, veterans and their families prepare for, cope with, and respond to the challenges of military service. Emergency communications, training, support to wounded warriors and veterans, and access to community resources help an average of 150,000 military families and veterans annually.
Lifesaving Blood
Your donations of blood are what make the American Red Cross the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the U.S. Each year, nearly 4 million people donate blood through the Red Cross, helping to provide more than 40% of America’s blood supply.
Health and Safety Services
The Red Cross is the nation’s leading provider of health and safety courses, such as CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard training. Each year, more than 9 million Americans participate in our training programs, including first responders, educators, babysitters, and people who want to be prepared to help others in an emergency.
International Services
The American Red Cross is part of the world’s largest humanitarian network with 13 million volunteers in 187 countries. Working together, we help respond to disasters, build safer communities, and teach the rules of war. Each year, we reach an average of more than 100 million people across the globe.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world’s largest volunteer-based humanitarian network. Together with our 189 member National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies worldwide we reach 97 million people annually through long-term recovery and development programmes, as well as 85 million people affected by disasters, health emergencies and crises each year. We act before, during and after crises to meet the needs and improve the lives of vulnerable people. They are symbols of protection that international law gives to the wounded and sick, and those caring for them, in armed conflict. They tell those fighting that they must not attack anyone or anything that displays these emblems.
The symbols can also show a connection to a red cross or red crescent organization, when integrated into their logos. They help people know they are humanitarian organisations, helping people in natural disasters, times of war or other emergencies. Purely based on need.
The emblems are not religious symbols. They serve humanity. They are a symbol of protection and a sign that help is at hand. They are also a sign of hope, and must be respected.

The History of the Red Cross (up to 1992)
I made this work for the Red Cross Pavilion at the 1992 Seville Universal Expo. After the event, this work has been kept in a drawer until 2011. I found it and I realized that the video is old but the message remains in force and will remain so. The only difference is that today the number of National Societies approaches 200.

American Red Cross
The American Red Cross (ARC), also known as The American National Red Cross, is a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief and education inside the United States. It is the designated US affiliate of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Today, in addition to domestic disaster relief, the American Red Cross offers services in four other areas: communications services and comfort for military members and their family members; the collection, processing and distribution of blood and blood products; educational programs on preparedness, health, and safety; and international relief and development programs.
Issued a corporate charter by the United States Congress under Title 36 of the United States Code, Section 3001, the American National Red Cross is governed by volunteers and supported by community donations, income from health and safety training and products, and income from blood products. The American Red Cross is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Chairman of the Board of Governors, serving her second three-year term, is Bonnie McElveen-Hunter. The current President and Chief Executive Officer is Gail J. McGovern.

Cross
A cross is a geometrical figure consisting of two lines or bars perpendicular to each other, dividing one or two of the lines in half. The lines usually run vertically and horizontally; if they run obliquely, the design is technically termed a saltire, although the arms of a saltire need not meet at right angles.
The cross is one of the most ancient human symbols, and has been used by many religions, most notably Christianity. It may be seen as a division of the world into four elements (Chevalier, 1997) or cardinal points, or alternately as the union of the concepts of divinity, the vertical line, and the world, the horizontal line (Koch, 1955).
Etymology
The word cross comes ultimately from Latin crux, a Roman torture device used for crucifixion, via Old Irish cros. The word was introduced to English in the 10th century as the term for the instrument of the torturous execution of Jesus as described in the New Testament, gradually replacing the earlier word rood. Crux is possibly derived from Phoenician. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia cross does not come from crux but form the Latin curio, "to torment".

In a world crowded with symbols, what do the red cross, red crescent and red crystal mean?
They are symbols of protection that international law gives to the wounded and sick, and those caring for them, in armed conflict. They tell those fighting that they must not attack anyone or anything that displays these emblems.
The symbols can also show a connection to a red cross or red crescent organization, when integrated into their logos. They help people know they are humanitarian organisations, helping people in natural disasters, times of war or other emergencies. Purely based on need.
The emblems are not religious symbols. They serve humanity. They are a symbol of protection and a sign that help is at hand. They are also a sign of hope, and must be respected.

I made this work for the Red Cross Pavilion at the 1992 Seville Universal Expo. After the event, this work has been kept in a drawer until 2011. I found it and I realized that the video is old but the message remains in force and will remain so. The only difference is that today the number of National Societies approaches 200.

Paraguay: women supporting their families from behind bars
On the occasion of International Women's Day, we are putting the spotlight on the struggles of women deprived of their freedom. Female detainees are often the sole providers for their families, so their detention results in great economic hardship for their loved ones. An innovative income generating project run by the ICRC in Paraguay is helping female detainees support themselves and their families. The women learn to make handicrafts which are sold on visitor's day and made to order for specific clients -- giving them a marketable skill and a greater sense of self-worth.

I found it and I realized that the video is old but the message remains in force and will remain so. The only difference is that today the number of National Societies approaches 200.
