The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an international humanitarian movement with approximately 97 million volunteers, members and staff worldwide which was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering.
The movement consists of several distinct organizations that are legally independent from each other, but are united within the movement through common basic principles, objectives, symbols, statutes and governing organisations. The movement's parts are:
The American Red Cross (ARC), also known as The American National Red Cross, is a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief and education inside the United States. It is the designated US affiliate of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Today, in addition to domestic disaster relief, the American Red Cross offers services in four other areas: communications services and comfort for military members and their family members; the collection, processing and distribution of blood and blood products; educational programs on preparedness, health, and safety; and international relief and development programs.
Issued a corporate charter by the United States Congress under Title 36 of the United States Code, Section 3001, the American National Red Cross is governed by volunteers and supported by community donations, income from health and safety training and products, and income from blood products. The American Red Cross is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Chairman of the Board of Governors, serving her second three-year term, is Bonnie McElveen-Hunter. The current President and Chief Executive Officer is Gail J. McGovern.
A cross is a geometrical figure consisting of two lines or bars perpendicular to each other, dividing one or two of the lines in half. The lines usually run vertically and horizontally; if they run obliquely, the design is technically termed a saltire, although the arms of a saltire need not meet at right angles.
The cross is one of the most ancient human symbols, and has been used by many religions, most notably Christianity. It may be seen as a division of the world into four elements (Chevalier, 1997) or cardinal points, or alternately as the union of the concepts of divinity, the vertical line, and the world, the horizontal line (Koch, 1955).
The word cross comes ultimately from Latin crux, a Roman torture device used for crucifixion, via Old Irish cros. The word was introduced to English in the 10th century as the term for the instrument of the torturous execution of Jesus as described in the New Testament, gradually replacing the earlier word rood. Crux is possibly derived from Phoenician. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia cross does not come from crux but form the Latin curio, "to torment".

The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers and employees share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, here at home and around the world, through five key service areas: Disaster Relief The Red Cross responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in the United States every year, ranging from home fires that affect a single family to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions. In these events, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services to help families and entire communities get back on their feet. Although the Red Cross is not a government agency, it is an essential part of the response when disaster strikes. We work in partnership with other ...

They are symbols of protection that international law gives to the wounded and sick, and those caring for them, in armed conflict. They tell those fighting that they must not attack anyone or anything that displays these emblems. The symbols can also show a connection to a red cross or red crescent organization, when integrated into their logos. They help people know they are humanitarian organisations, helping people in natural disasters, times of war or other emergencies. Purely based on need. The emblems are not religious symbols. They serve humanity. They are a symbol of protection and a sign that help is at hand. They are also a sign of hope, and must...
The History of the Red Cross (up to 1992) I made this work for the Red Cross Pavilion at the 1992 Seville Universal Expo. After the event, this work has been kept in a drawer until 2011. Ms Mary Werntz, Head of Regional Delegation, New Delhi, welcomes guests at the World Red Cross Red Crescent Day celebrations on 8 May, 2014, at The Claridges Hotel in New Delhi
On the occasion of International Women's Day, we are putting the spotlight on the struggles of women deprived of their freedom. Female detainees are often the sole providers for their families, so their detention results in great economic hardship for their loved ones. An innovative income generating project run by the ICRC in Paraguay is helping female detainees support themselves and their families. The women learn to make handicrafts which are sold on visitor's day and made to order for specific clients -- giving them a marketable skill and a greater sense of self-worth.
Known as a city of peace, Geneva is the home of a number of humanitarian organizations, including the Red Cross. The museum here displays state of the art museographics that tell the story of the work of the Red Cross during some of the world's gravest times. Millions of prisoner file cards, statues, films and exhibits recount the world's history of war, with an emphasis on the mandate to reflect, think and act, rather than resign themselves.
Short ethical phrases throughout recorded human history and in different languages.

Suhhhh duude
Suhhhh duude
Help me, please help me, I'm a victim of disaster
My life has just been ripped apart in seconds only faster
I lost all hope I lost myself I lost my family too
So if there's a search and rescue will they find me soon
Burnin I'm burnin I just can't get out
Will someone please tell me what this is all about
I gave my time I gave my money, gave almost everything
So why do bad things happen to good people like me
Red cross will you save me (4x)
Dreamin I'm dreamin will someone wake me up
This nightmare can't be real and I ain't givin up
I need some help, I need some faith
I need the cold hard truth
So if I'm here tomorrow will I be covered too
Learnin' I'm learnin' just who is there for me
He came and died and bled forever I am free
He covered me, he saved me and washed away my sins
