The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (Italian pronunciation: [katteˈdraːle di ˈsanta maˈriːa del ˈfjoːre]; in English "Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flowers") is the main church of Florence, Italy. Il Duomo di Firenze, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style with the design of Arnolfo di Cambio and completed structurally in 1436 with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi. The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris.
The cathedral complex, located in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. These three buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the historic centre of Florence and are a major attraction to tourists visiting Tuscany. The basilica is one of Italy's largest churches, and until development of new structural materials in the modern era, the dome was the largest in the world. It remains the largest brick dome ever constructed.
Santa María (with diacritic over the "i") or Santa Maria may refer to:
Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Santy, or simply Santa is a mythical figure with historical origins who, in many Western cultures, brings gifts to the homes of well-behaved, "good" children on Christmas Eve (24 December) and the early morning hours of Christmas Day (25 December). The modern Santa Claus is derived from the British figure of Father Christmas, the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, and Saint Nicholas, the historical Greek bishop and gift-giver of Myra. During the Christianization of Germanic Europe, this figure may also have absorbed elements of the god Odin, who was associated with the Germanic pagan midwinter event of Yule and led the Wild Hunt, a ghostly procession through the sky.
Santa Claus is generally depicted as a portly, joyous, white-bearded man—sometimes with spectacles—wearing a red coat with white collar and cuffs, white-cuffed red trousers, and black leather belt and boots and who carries a bag full of gifts for children. Images of him rarely have a beard with no moustache. This image became popular in the United States and Canada in the 19th century due to the significant influence of the 1823 poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas" and of caricaturist and political cartoonist Thomas Nast. This image has been maintained and reinforced through song, radio, television, children's books and films.
Fiore means flower in Italian. It may refer to:

The dome that crowns Florence’s great cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore—the Duomo—is a towering masterpiece of Renaissance ingenuity and an enduring source of mystery. Still the largest masonry dome on earth after more than six centuries, it is taller than the Statue of Liberty and weighs as much as an average cruise ship. Historians and engineers have long debated how its secretive architect, Filippo Brunelleschi, managed to keep the dome perfectly aligned and symmetrical as the sides rose and converged toward the center, 40 stories above the cathedral floor. Travel video about destination Florence in Italy. Florence is the capital of Tuscany, a city of art and joie de vivre. With its magnificent tower the Palazzo Vecchio is a communal palace that has been the city’s political centre since the beginning of the 14th century. Originally it was the seat of the city’s Republican rulers but soon afterwards the MEDICI dynasty settled there, the cleverest and most powerful of the handful of families that ruled over the city. In front of the palace’s façade there is a double life-sized statue that is a copy of Michelangelo’s‚’David’, and in the Galleria Dell` Accademia there are several further sculptures by the great artist that idealised and glorified the strength of the Renaissance people. The three-sided Gothic cathedral and the Campanile are tightl...

Florence's landmark Duomo (cathedral) is crowned by Brunelleschi's majestic dome — the first Renaissance dome and the model for many domes to follow (climb it for a glorious view). Nearby the Baptistery features Ghiberti's magnificent bronze doors, which Michelangelo called the "gates of paradise." These creations help define the Renaissance, when Florence blossomed and classical arts were reborn. Subscribe at http://goo.gl/8iBEnS for weekly updates on more European destinations.

Santa Maria,
Insel die aus Träumen geboren.
Ich habe meine Sinne verloren,
in dem Fieber, das wie Feuer brennt.
Santa Maria,
nachts an deinen schneeweißen Stränden
Hielt ich ihre Jugend in den Händen
Glück für das man keinen Namen kennt.
Sie war ein Kind der Sonne,
Schön wie ein erwachender Morgen.
Heiß war ihr stolzer Blick
Doch tief in ihrem Inneren verborgen,
Brannte die Sehnsucht - Santa Maria
Den Schritt zu wagen - Santa Maria
Vom Mädchen bis zur Frau.

Santa Maria,
ihre Wildheit ließ mich erleben,
Mit ihr auf bunten Flügeln entschweben,
In ein fernes unbekanntes Land.
Wehrlos trieb ich dahin
Im Zauber ihres Lächelns gefangen.
Doch als der Tag erwacht
Sah ich die Tränen auf ihren Wangen,
Morgen hieß Abschied - Santa Maria
Und meine Heimat - Santa Maria
War so unendlich weit!
