Northern China and southern China are two approximate regions within China. The exact boundary between these two regions has never been precisely defined. Nevertheless, the self-perception of Chinese people, especially regional stereotypes, has often been dominated by these two concepts, Northern-Chinese and Southern-Chinese, given that regional differences in culture and language have historically fostered strong regional identities (乡土, xiāngtǔ, 'localism') of the Chinese people.
Often used as the geographical dividing line between northern and southern China is the Huai River–Qin Mountains Line. This line approximates the 0 °C January isotherm and the 800 millimetres (31 in) isohyet in China.
Culturally, however, the division is more ambiguous. In the eastern provinces like Jiangsu and Anhui, the Yangtze River may instead be perceived as the north–south boundary instead of the Huai River, but this is a recent development.
There is an ambiguous area, the region around Nanyang, Henan, that lies in the gap where the Qin has ended and the Huai River has not yet begun; in addition, central Anhui and Jiangsu lie south of the Huai River but north of the Yangtze, making their classification somewhat ambiguous as well. As such, the boundary between northern and southern China does not follow provincial boundaries; it cuts through Shaanxi, Henan, Anhui, and Jiangsu, and creates areas such as Hanzhong (Shaanxi), Xinyang (Henan), and Xuzhou (Jiangsu) that lie on an opposite half of China from the rest of their respective provinces. This may have been deliberate; the Mongol Yuan Dynasty and Han Chinese Ming Dynasty established many of these boundaries intentionally to discourage regionalist separatism.
South China (simplified Chinese: 华南; traditional Chinese: 華南; pinyin: huá nán) is a geographical and cultural region that covers the southernmost part of China. Its precise meaning varies with context.
In the broadest sense, Southern China can denote the entire portion of the country south of the line demarcated by the Qin Mountains and Huai River. Between 1945 and 1949, the Republic of China defined Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Fujian and Taiwan as the "Seven Provinces of South China" (simplified Chinese: 华南七省; traditional Chinese: 華南七省; pinyin: huá nán qī shěng). The term can also be used to denote the Lingnan region; but today, the phrase is generally used to refer only to Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong and Macau (historically also known as Liangguang). Defined as such, South China is also contained within South Central China.
China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces; five autonomous regions; four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing); two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau); and claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.
China Southern Airlines Company Limited (SSE: 600029, SEHK: 1055, NYSE: ZNH) is an airline headquartered in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, People's Republic of China. It is the world's sixth-largest airline measured by passengers carried and Asia's largest airline in fleet size and passengers carried. It is the fourth-largest airline in the world in domestic passenger traffic and the sixth-largest in scheduled domestic passenger-kilometres flown. From its main hubs at Beijing Capital International Airport and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, the airline flies to 193 destinations using a fleet of more than 400 aircraft.
China Southern Airlines was established on 1 July 1988 following the restructuring of the Civil Aviation Administration of China. Since then, it acquired and merged with a number of domestic airlines, becoming one of China's "Big Three" airlines (alongside Air China and China Eastern Airlines). China Southern Airlines is a member of SkyTeam. The airlines's logo is a red kapok flower on a blue vertical tail fin.
Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has a land area of 1104 km2 and shares its northern border with Guangdong Province of Mainland China. With around 7.2 million inhabitants of various nationalities, Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.
After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and a 99-year lease of the New Territories from 1898. Hong Kong remained under British control for about a century until the Second World War, when Japan occupied the colony from December 1941 to August 1945. After the Surrender of Japan, the British resumed control. In the 1980s, negotiations between the United Kingdom and the China resulted in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, which provided for the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems. Disputes over the perceived misapplication of this principle have contributed to popular protests, including the 2014 Umbrella Revolution.

THE REAL WORLD OF HONG KONG AND SOUTHERN CHINA Hong Kong, once a barren rock of an island on the South China coast, has become one of the great cities of the world. Hong Kong Island was deeded to the British empire in 1898 on a ninety-nine year lease from China. This was a flight that affected my understanding about FAs and service industry in China. I ended up chatting with a flight attendant who really gave me an interesting glimpse into the life of a Chinese flight attendant. One of the things we ended up chatting about was a rather (in)famous? review by a blogger about the first class service onboard China Southern's A380, and the subsequent demotion of several of the first class FAs. One of the issues that was brought up in the review was the fact some FAs slept in the first class seats. I found out from her that often there are not enough sleeping space for FAs, and so rather than napping uncomfortably in the jumpseats (which is what I saw on this flight), they choose the empty first class seats. It turns out China Southern and other airline...

This meant that in 1997 the worlds largest communist country came into possession of one of the worlds richest, most influential and supremely successful, international capitals of big business in the world. All of this is in stark contrast to most of China where a 4,000 year old civilization exists and where the worlds largest human population lives. The city of Guangzhou, in the Canton provence has been a port of call for smugglers, pirates, traders and mandarins for centuries. The towering, mist-shrouded, limestone p...

A beautiful takeoff with views of an A380 lifting off! The experience at check-in was actually good for economy with a ground staff member welcoming me for taking this flight and personally taking my luggage the short distance to the check-in desk. While the premium economy seat on CZ is pretty good (spacious leg room and bright IFE), food on China Southern's newest and long awaited route were disappointing. Food on this particular flight was barely edible, and service was odd with three small meals. I had better experiences with the food on my intra-China flight. Plane was equipped with mood lighting but for some reason this was never used until the end of the flight. While this is only one flight, it fits into what I have heard about CZ as inconsistent, especially in the context of my la...

Watch now, and use this DISCOUNT CODE: laowinning http://www.vimeo.com/ondemand/conqueringsouthernchina We head to the northernmost tip of Chinese and skirt Siberia, as we heard there were rumors of white Russian people, with Chinese citizenship and identity. Chairman Mao and the Russian leadership had no idea what was out there when they drew arbitrary borders, and they ended up creating the border through a Russian village. This left up to 3000 Russians left over in China. We got an insider scoop that the Russian government sent a mission over to bring them back in 2009 (after 70 years!) And while most of them took the aid package and went ...
After Hainan and Xiamen's business class, I am curious to see how China Southern's business class will compare especially since CZ is larger and and more established. CZ has been pushing the "Canton route" as an alternative to the ME3, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and Singapore Airlines between Europe and Australia. CZ has gained some noterity for its beverage choice in first class. Although I don't know what the champagne is in first class, I am happy to report that the business class champagne is a Taittinger, which is what Cathay offers in business. My previous experience with CZ is that the service can be quite good but the catering is far from competitive. Before I get into the onboard service, I have to say that China Southern did a great job with their transit service for premium passeng...
