South Kivu (French: Sud-Kivu) is a province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its capital is Bukavu.
South Kivu Province was created in 1969, when the existing Kivu Province was divided into two parts.
In June 2014, around 35 people were killed in an attack in the South Kivu village of Mutarule. The attack was apparently part of dispute over cattle.
South Kivu borders the provinces of North Kivu to the north, Maniema to the west, and Katanga to the south. To the east it borders the countries of Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania.
Administratively, the province of Sud-Kivu is divided into eight territories:
In the legal view, this province has three major cities of importance: Baraka (Fizi Territory), Bukavu (Provincial Capital) and Uvira (Uvira Territory). The northern city of Minova grew exponentially from 1994 through 2012 with a steady influx of refugees as a result of the disruption of the Rwandan Genocide and the First and Second Congo wars, and continued fighting in the area.
Kivu was the name for a large "Region" in the Democratic Republic of Congo under the rule of Mobutu Sese Seko that bordered Lake Kivu. It included three "Sub-Regions" ("Sous-Regions" in French): Nord-Kivu, Sud-Kivu and Maniema, corresponding to the three current provinces created in 1986. The capital of the Kivu Region was in Bukavu, and the capitals of the three Sub-Regions were in Goma, Uvira and Kindu.
Kivu is also the name for the entire region surrounding Lake Kivu, including the portions in Rwanda which contain the vast majority of the lake area's population (the contiguous towns of Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo and Gisenyi, Rwanda, with a combined population approaching 1,000,000, form the largest urbanised area in the Lake Kivu area). The area is characterized by lush vegetation and an extended growing season due in part to its high altitude (1500 m or 4900 ft at the lakeshore) and the volcanic nature of its soil. The Kivu region represents the high point of the East African Rift Valley.

The Republic of the Congo (French: République du Congo), also known as Congo, Congo Republic,West Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville, is a country located in Central Africa. It is bordered by five countries: Gabon to the west; Cameroon to the northwest; the Central African Republic to the northeast; the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the east and south; and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda to the southwest.
The region was dominated by Bantu-speaking tribes, who built trade links leading into the Congo River basin. Congo-Brazzaville was formerly part of the French colony of Equatorial Africa. Upon independence in 1960, the former colony of French Congo became the Republic of the Congo. The People's Republic of the Congo was a Marxist–Leninist one-party state from 1970 to 1991. Multi-party elections have been held since 1992, although a democratically elected government was ousted in the 1997 Republic of the Congo Civil War and President Denis Sassou Nguesso has ruled for 26 of the past 36 years.
A democratic republic is, strictly speaking, a country that is both a republic and a democracy. It is one where ultimate authority and power is derived from the citizens, and the government itself is run through elected officials.
However, in recent practice, countries that have described themselves as democratic republics have not always held free or fair elections. Two examples of this were the German Democratic Republic and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, communist states commonly known as East Germany and North Vietnam. Another is the Democratic Republic of the Congo which in 2011 was rated by Freedom House as a "not free" country, having a rating of 6.0 (1.0 being completely free and 7.0 being completely unfree). Also, the 'Democratic People's Republic of Korea', commonly known as North Korea, is rated the least democratic in the world, run by a dictator. A republic is a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (/ˈkɒŋɡoʊ/; French pronunciation: [kɔ̃ɡo]; French: République démocratique du Congo), also known as DR Congo, DRC, DROC, RDC, Congo-Kinshasa, or simply Congo is a country located in Central Africa. From 1971 to 1997 it was named Zaïre. The DRC borders the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan to the north; Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania to the east; Zambia and Angola to the south; and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It is the second largest country in Africa by area, the largest in Subsaharan Africa, and the eleventh largest in the world. With a population of over 75 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the most populated officially Francophone country, the fourth most populated nation in Africa and the nineteenth most populated country in the world.
The Congolese Civil Wars, which began in 1996, brought about the end of Mobutu Sese Seko's 31-year reign and devastated the country. The wars ultimately involved nine African nations, multiple groups of UN peacekeepers and twenty armed groups, and resulted in the deaths of 5.4 million people.

Warlords, soldiers, and child laborers all toil over a mineral you've never even heard of. Coltan is a conflict mineral in nearly every cell phone, laptop, and electronic device. It's also tied to the deaths of over 5 million people in Congo since 1990. Zongoene Lodge is situated approximately 225 km north of Maputo and just south of Xai-Xai and is built on the edge of the Limpopo River estuary where it flows into the Indian Ocean. The magnificent restaurant and bar area has a large open deck overlooking the estuary and ocean. Adjoining the well stocked bar is the restaurant where the resident chef will serve you w...
Country #19 in 2015 was RWANDA! This country was hands down our favorite in Africa. Despite all the challenges, struggles and down right treacherous past the country has had, the government and people are making great gains to preserve their beautiful piece of this planet. The streets are clean, the people overwhelmingly friendly and hard working, plus the wildlife is out of this World. Gorilla trekking in the Virunga Mountains goes on our top 5 travel experiences of all time. Check out what adventure we are doing right now at http://www.divergenttravelers.com/

This participatory video which was made in North Kivu, Congo DRC is part of an IUCN NL learning trajectory aimed at reinforcing the relationship between ecology and development through the use of audiovisual media in capacity building. Vitshumbi is a small fishing village on the edge of Lake Edward in North-Kivu, Congo DRC. Due to bad management, war and overfishing the lake has been overexploited since the 1980s, which has severely disturbed the delicate thread between ecology and development and has led to conflict and malnutrition. In this film, community members of Vitshumbi, from fishermen to military, explore the situation from their own point of view and share ideas for improvement. Trainee Yalala Tangira, about the process: By making this film we can perhaps not change the ...

For the last ten years, the Eastern Provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo have been at war. The women bear the brunt of it. The precise number of victims suffering from rape and related diseases, of which traumatic fistula is one, is impossible to know. A UN independent expert says that between 2005 and 2007, 14,200 cases were reported in South Kivu province alone. Shunned by their community, the women are often reluctant to come forward for treatment. Instead they are forced to bear the physical and psychological scars of their ordeal alone. We travel to Bukavu to interview Dr Denis Mukwege, one of the few doctors in the country willing to treat fistula, to discover the truth behind one of the world's greatest unreported evils.

This Malala Day we're standing up for children's right to education and a chance in life. Many children in conflict long to return to school. Neema, 9, was forced to flee her home as a result of the conflict in Kamango, North Kivu, DRC. She is one of hundreds who are forced to take shelter in school classrooms in the border town of Nobili. For many displaced children like Neema, the daily struggle to survive leaves little opportunity to gain an education.

According to Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (iDMC)... At the end of the year 2010, the number of people internally displaced across the world (by armed conflict, generalised violence and human rights violations) reached 27.5 million. This figure represented an increase of about 400,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) since the end of 2009. The global number of IDPs has steadily increased from a total of around 17 million in 1997. The number of refugees has remained fairly stable, fluctuating between 13 million and 16 million in the same period. Over half the world's IDPs were in five countries. Colombia and Sudan, Iraq, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Somalia all had at least a million IDPs. In Pakistan there were at least 980,000 IDPs in 2010. Pro...

He sat on the corner of Bevington Bush,
astride an old packing case,
And the dolls on the end of the plank went dancing,
as he crooned with a smile on his face.
CHORUS: "Come day, go day. Wishing me heart for Sunday.
Drinking buttermilk all the week; whisky on a Sunday."
2; His tired old hands drummed the wooden plank,
and the puppet dolls they danced the gear.
A far better show then you ever would see,
at the Pivvy or new Brightion Pier.
CHORUS; Come day go day........
3; But in 1905, old Seth Davy died,
and his song was heard no more.
And the three dancing dolls ended up in a bin,
and the plank went to mend a back-door.
CHORUS:"Come day, go day
4; But on some stormy nights, down Scotty Road way,
when the wind blows up from the sea,
You can still hear the song of old Seth Davy,
that he sang to his dancing dolls three;
