Wissel's and Lytton's set in belgrade was pretty mental. It's amazing they keep their faces straight while playing such dense, absurdist music. Free improv that makes any sound, no matter how random, become part of their set? Yes please!
From the Press release: Percussionist Paul Lytton and Saxophonist Georg Wissel got to know each other in
Cologne/Wuppertal based Fineworks-Ensemble. Since 2006 they are working together as
a duo.
In the course of their search for a new and personal sound-language the two Improvisers
have allways been keeping busy themselves in modification and adjustment of their
instruments to their artistic needs.
In this note Wissel & Lytton's set-up appears like an (acoustic) manufactory.
And in deed, the two artists create a highly differenciated noise-sound-art-music in front of
the eyes and ears of the audience.
Paul Lytton - percussion
is one of the most distinguished percussionists in Improvised music.
Since the mid-sixties Paul Lytton is playing together with the leading english Improvisers
like Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Paul Rutherford, Barry Guy, Howard Riley, Jamie Muir,
John Stevens, Trevor Watts....
Allready at the begin of the sixties he started to construct his own percussioninstruments
and modifying naturally created sounds by electronic means.
To realize his imagination of sound, Paul Lytton has develloped a new way of playing
as well as a new instrument.
Georg Wissell - (prepared) alto-/ tenorsaxophone
Affected by his hometown's (Wanne-Eickel) music-scene he made his first
important experiences in Improvised music recording and touring 1986-'88
in Europe and Southamerica with W.-E. trio 'Pöhlmusik' along with Jon Rose.
Inspired by his collaboration with electronic musicians, he began also (beside working on
instrumental playing-technics) searching for new sounds by preparations, which by the
time have become an integral part of his playing.
He is working internationally, performing solo and with permanent groups like the
'BLANKDISC TRIO; 'CANARIES ON THE POLE'; 'WuppertalImprovisers Orchestra'
or in projects together with ...Peter Behrendsen, Lawrence Casserley, Malcolm
Goldstein, Gunda Gottschalk, Lou Grassi, Joker Nies, Tim Perkis, Melvyn Poore, Alan
Silva, "LondonImprovisersOrchestra"...
Recently he organized the "Balkan Improvisers Festival" in Cologne.

The Eleventh Hour (2005)
Electro-Acoustic Ensemble
The Eleventh Hour is the fourth offering by Evan Parker's Electro-Acoustic Ensemble on ECM. The ensemble here numbers 11 members, six of whom are electronic sound sculptors and sound processors, with the remainder -- including Philipp Wachsmann and Paul Lytton -- are free jazz and new music improvisers. This piece, in five parts, was commissioned by the Contemporary Arts Center in Glasgow, where the album was recorded. Free improv of an intense variety kicks off the first section with live acoustic instrumentation in the foreground and sonics are slipped forward and backward through the dialogue. As the piece develops, silence, ambience, and repetition play more and more of a role, as new modes and routes are proposed and integrated through the sections as each "real" instrument is allowed its own free play, and then dialogue, in duet and trio engagements with others. The final five minutes of this work is one of the most ominous and tense dronescapes, punctuated by high-pitched industrial sounds and offering a mood of pure foreboding, and even dread. It's dynamic, dramatic, and utterly unsettling, leaving the listener spellbound once the recording has drifted into silence. [Allmusic.com]

CHRIS CORSANO / JOE McPHEE / EVAN PARKER
Chris Corsano batteria | Joe McPhee sax contralto, sax soprano | Evan Parker sax soprano e tenore

Alien sex with two French and one German fiend. Fierce noise, subtle sound experimentation, some really demented fun. Thomas Lehn? That man was on FIRE!!!Sunday night in Belgrade, ladies and gentlemen!
From press release: Michel Doneda, soprano saxophone, born in 1954, comes from the French South-West. He is a self-taught musician.
In 1980 he founded in Toulouse a reed trio: HIC ET NUNC, a group that toured quite a lot in France, playing mostly improvised music. At the same time he founded with musicians, dancers and actors a place called IREA (Institute for research and exchange between arts of improvisation).
In the following years, he participated in music projects with other artists and he became a regular guest of the Chantenay-Villedieu festival. Meeting other artists he developed a very personal approach with his music and his instrument in improvised music. During this period he played with Europeans musicians: Fred Van Hove, Phil Wachsmann, Max Eastley, Steve Beresford and Americans: John Zorn, Eliott Sharp, Elvin Jones
In 1985 he made his first record under his own name: TERRA (Nato record). At the same time he started playing regurlarly with Lê Quan Ninh, Daunik Lazro, Beñat Achiary, Martine Altenburger, Barre Phillips, Paul Rogers, Tetsu Saitoh, Kazue Sawai.
More recently he developed his work with Keith Rowe, Gunter Muller, Bhob Rainey, Giuseppe Ielasi and dancers as Masaki Iwana, Yukiko Nakamura, Valérie Métivier and poets, actors.
Since then, he has been very involved in the international improvised music scene, toured in Africa, Japan, Asia, USA, Canada, South America, Russia and with a lot of improvisers in Europe.
Jerome Noetinger was born 25th April 1966 (Marseille, France), Jérôme Noetinger followed his musical training in electroacoustic music under the direction of Xavier Garcia in Grenoble (France) from 1986 to 1988. He was one of the three founding members of the Metamkine intervention cell (Cellule d'Intervention Metamkine) since 1987, alongside french cinéasts Christophe Auger and Xavier Quérel (they performed in Belgrade in 2001). He has collaborated with longtime partner Lionel Marchetti since 1993 and Mathieu Werchowski (1997-1998). He has played with Nachtluft, Voice Crack, Tom Cora, Michel Doneda, Lê Quan Ninh, Martine Altenburger, Emmanuel Petit, Marc Pichelin, Jean Pallandre, Dominique Répécaud, Peter Hollinger, Keith Rowe, and avant-improv orchestra MIMEO (since 1997). He runs the Metamkine Record label (and was responsible for curating its 'Collection Cinéma pour l'oreille' series) and is currently a member of the editorial board of French magazine Revue & Corrigée.
Thomas Lehn was born in Fröndenberg (Germany) in 1958 and since the early 1980s has been working as a author and performer of contemporary music.
As an interpreting pianist he has been playing concerts since 1982 - performing both contemporary new music including numerous first performances and traditional composed music of the classical and romantical period. In 1989 he initiated the chamber ensemble Trio Dario and four years later the Mengano Quartett, performing compositions of the contemporary avant-garde, in particular numerous first performances of comissioned works.
Developed parallel to his work as a pianist, since the early 1990s his major and widely known work has been performing and producing live-electronic music. Rooted in the experience of a wide spectrum of musical fields based on his background as an interpreting and improvising pianist in classical-, contemporary and jazz-music and being involved in numerous other projects like music theatre, dance, multi-media, studio pre-/post-production etc., he has been developing an individual 'language' of electronic music.
The electronic equipment he uses consists of analogue synthesizers of the late 1960s, and since 1994 in particular the EMS Synthi A. Besides the substantial characteristics of its analogue sound synthesis, the facilities of this modular instrument - for example to modify electronic sounds very directly as well as to combine and to control several parameters of the sound synthesis at the same time - allows him to spontaneously act and react in close contact with the various structural degrees of the musical process.
His ensemble activities include duetts with: Gerry Hemingway and Marcus Schmickler, Günter Christmann, Eugene Chadbourne and Paul Lovens. Other duett partners are Italian violinist Tiziana Bertoncini, Swiss saxophonist Urs Leimgruber and French pianist Frédéric Blondy.
Major trio collaborations are KONK PACK with Tim Hodgkinson and Roger Turner, TOOT with Phil Minton and Axel Dörner (oba sastava su vec nastupala na "Ring Ring festivalu u Beogradu, THERMAL with John Butcher and Andy Moor, FUTCH with Jon Rose and Johannes Bauer

James David Graham Niven (1 March 1910 – 29 July 1983)[1][2] was an English actor and novelist who was popular in Europe and in the United States. He may be best known for his roles as Squadron Leader Peter Carter in A Matter of Life and Death, as Phileas Fogg in Around the World in 80 Days and as Sir Charles Lytton, a.k.a. "the Phantom", in The Pink Panther. He was awarded the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Separate Tables (1958).
Born in London, Niven attended Heatherdown Preparatory School and Stowe before gaining a place at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. After Sandhurst he was gazetted a lieutenant in the Highland Light Infantry. Having developed an interest in acting, he left the Highland Light Infantry, travelled to Hollywood and had several minor roles in film. He first appeared as an extra in the British film There Goes the Bride (1932). From there, he hired an agent and had several small parts in films from 1933 to 1935, including a non-speaking part in MGM's Mutiny on the Bounty. This brought him to wider attention within the film industry and he was spotted by Samuel Goldwyn. Upon the outbreak of the Second World War, Niven returned to Britain and rejoined the army, being re-commissioned as a lieutenant.
Niven resumed his acting career after his demobilisation, and was voted the second most popular British actor in the 1945 Popularity Poll of British film stars. He appeared in A Matter of Life and Death (1946), The Bishop's Wife (1947) and Enchantment (1948), all of which received critical acclaim. Niven later appeared in The Elusive Pimpernel (1950), The Toast of New Orleans (1950), Happy Go Lovely (1951), Happy Ever After (1954) and Carrington V.C. (1955) before scoring a big success as Phileas Fogg in Michael Todd's production of Around the World in 80 Days. Niven appeared in nearly a hundred films, and many shows for TV. He also began writing books, with considerable commercial success. In 1982 he appeared in Blake Edwards' final "Pink Panther" films Trail of the Pink Panther and Curse of the Pink Panther, reprising his role as Sir Charles Lytton.

The Coming Race
Edward BULWER-LYTTON (1803 - 1873)
Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton (1803-1873) was an English novelist, poet, playright, and politician. Lord Lytton was a florid, popular writer of his day, who coined such phrases as "the great unwashed", "pursuit of the almighty dollar", "the pen is mightier than the sword", and the infamous incipit "It was a dark and stormy night." Despite his popularity in his heyday, today his name is known as a byword for bad writing. San Jose State University holds an annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest for bad writing in which contestants have to supply terrible openings of imaginary novels, inspired by his novel Paul Clifford, which opens with the famous words: “It was a dark and stormy night”.
The Coming Race drew heavily on his interest in the occult and contributed to the birth of the science fiction genre.

Belgian Reedist Joachim Badenhorst's work ranges from solo improvisation, collaborative encounter and project with John Butcher and Paul Lytton, to compositions for his septet Carate Urio Orchestra and the Icelandic based group Mógil. After years of academic training, he has since, and continues to, divided his time drifting between Belgium and different cities in the US and Europe. Now, Joachim is delving into a re-imagination of the boundaries between improvisation and composition, of abstract sound explorations and harmonic passage, and continues to attempt at a more intimate and site-specific aesthetic language that can resonate with different audiences. Since three years ago, he started the label KLEIN through which he began to engage himself in visual conceptions and self-made releases and objects.
Joachim has released the solo records `The Jungle He Told Me` (Smeraldina Rima LP, 2012), `Forest//Mori` (KLEIN, cd 2014) and is currently working on a solo casette release for the French Santé Loisirs label.
Joachim has performed solo at the Molde Jazz Festival (Norway), Taktlos Festival (Switzerland), Brussels Jazz Festival (Belgium), Orleans Jazz Festival (France), Bimhuis (Netherlands), Brand! Festival (Belgium), house shows in New York and Chicago and did a solo tour in China and Japan in 2014. This was Joachim`s solo debut in Iceland.
Belgíski blásturshljóðfæraleikarinn Joachim Badenhorst gerir tónlist af margvíslegum toga. Hann hefur haldið sólóspunatónleika, unnið samvinnuverkefni með John Butcher og Paul Lytton, yfir í að skrifa verk fyrir sextettinn sinn, Carate Urio Orchestra, auk þess sem hann er í hljómsveitinni Mógil sem starfað hefur hérlendis. Joachim vinnur víðsvegar um heiminn, flakkandi frá Belgíu um meginlandið og yfir haf til Bandaríkjanna. Þessa stundina einbeitir Joachim sér í þróun náins hljóðheims, og vinnur staðbundið fyrir áhorfendur á hverjum tónleikum fyrir sig. Fyrir þremur árum stofnaði hann plötuútgáfu, KLEIN, sem hann notar sem vettvang fyrir sjónrænar hugmyndir og eigin útgáfum.
Joachim hefur gefið út plöturnar "The Jungle He Told Me" (Smeraldina Rima LP, 2012), "Forest//Mori" (KLEIN, cd 2014) og vinnur þessar stundirnar við útgáfu á kassettu fyrir útgáfufyrirtækið French Santé Loisirs.
Joachim hefur m.a. komið fram á Molde Jazz Festival (Noregi), Taktlos Festival (Sviss), Brussels Jazz Festival (Belgíu), Orleans Jazz Festival (Frakklandi), Bimhuis (Hollandi), Brand! Festival (Belgíu), og spilað í New York og Chicago. Hann túraði líka einn Kína og Japan í fyrra. Þetta verða fyrstu einleiks tónleikar Joachim Badenhorst á Íslandi.

THE WHITE NOISE - AN ELECTRIC STORM
Welcome to the world of the frequency shifter, signal generator and azimuth co-ordinator. A world that existed before the dawn of the synthesizer, when a 'sample' was a length of recording tape delicately and skillfully spliced in place. The 1968 White Noise -- An Electric Storm LP became the holy grail amongst collectors of 'Science Dimension' music, a staple ingredient for lovers of cosmic electronic space-rock.
White Noise was really one David Vorhaus (b,sc,dip.elec) American born, son of a black-listed film director. He avoided the draft by coming to the UK. Later he became a post graduate doing an electronics degree at the Northern Poly whilst studying classical music playing the double bass. After having attended a lecture by the group Unit Delta Plus, Vorhaus was compelled to combine his love of music with his scientific background and start making his own music.
At the time Unit Delta Plus were Brian Hodgson and Delia Derbyshire who were persuaded to collaborate with Vorhaus on his early recordings whilst they continued their day jobs at the BBC's radiophonic workshop, itself a shrine to new electronic music and birthplace of the famous Dr. Who theme. After recording two tracks on a six-revox set up all synchronized by one remote control, (i.e. the mains on/off switch), Vorhaus found himself introduced by chance to Island Records' Chris Blackwell. Chris was so captivated by the white noise experience that he shunned their appeal for a one-off singles deal and demanded that they do a whole album of material.
An instant cheque for £3,000 quenched their fears about not earning a quick buck through a hit single and our band of merry pranksters set about building their own sonic laboratory in London's Camden Town out of 'borrowed' gear, home made gizmos and equipment more associated with a science lab than a recording studio. 'Songs' took ages to build, each note being a compilation of various tape edits painstakingly stuck together. After a year Island Records became nervous and demanded a conclusion in a matter of days which, luckily, White Noise managed to pull off. The album was released in a total vacuum. Vorhaus played no gigs and did no interviews. Word of mouth over many years caused this album to sell tens of thousands of records. Like stablemates Art and Nirvana, this album remained on catalog deep into the seventies and became the hit of many a bedroom
and sixth form common-room.
Five years after its release Vorhaus made a second album on Virgin and a third in 1980 for the Pulse label. He continues to make music, a good deal for film and television work, and threatens a new album for the nineties. One album per decade is hardly a Prince-like output but when the quality is this high does it really matter?
