Kivu was the name for a large "Region" in the Democratic Republic of Congo under the rule of Mobutu Sese Seko that bordered Lake Kivu. It included three "Sub-Regions" ("Sous-Regions" in French): Nord-Kivu, Sud-Kivu and Maniema, corresponding to the three current provinces created in 1986. The capital of the Kivu Region was in Bukavu, and the capitals of the three Sub-Regions were in Goma, Uvira and Kindu.
Kivu is also the name for the entire region surrounding Lake Kivu, including the portions in Rwanda which contain the vast majority of the lake area's population (the contiguous towns of Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo and Gisenyi, Rwanda, with a combined population approaching 1,000,000, form the largest urbanised area in the Lake Kivu area). The area is characterized by lush vegetation and an extended growing season due in part to its high altitude (1500 m or 4900 ft at the lakeshore) and the volcanic nature of its soil. The Kivu region represents the high point of the East African Rift Valley.
Richard Bona (born 28 October 1967 in Minta, Cameroon) is a jazz bassist and musician.
Bona was born into a family of musicians, which enabled him to start learning music from a young age. His grandfather was a griot – a West African singer of praise and storyteller – and percussionist, and his mother was a singer. At 4 years old, Bona started to play the balafon. At the age of 5, he began performing at his village church. Not being wealthy, Bona made many of his own instruments: including flutes and guitars (with cords strung over an old motorcycle tank).
His talent was quickly noticed, and he was often invited to perform at festivals and ceremonies. Bona began learning to play the guitar at age 11, and in 1980 aged just 13, he assembled his first ensemble for a French jazz club in Douala. The owner befriended him and helped him discover jazz music, in particular that of Jaco Pastorius, which inspired Bona to switch his focus to the electric bass.
Bona emigrated to Germany at the age of 22 to study music in Düsseldorf, soon relocating to France, where he furthered his studies in music.

Warlords, soldiers, and child laborers all toil over a mineral you've never even heard of. Coltan is a conflict mineral in nearly every cell phone, laptop, and electronic device. It's also tied to the deaths of over 5 million people in Congo since 1990. Where the Limpopo bends and winds to meet the sea there stands a lighthouse and nestled between the dunes and trees an unspoiled paradise awaits you. Zongoene Lodge is situated approximately 225 km north of Maputo and just south of Xai-Xai and is built on the edge of the Limpopo River estuary where it flows into the Indian Ocean. Sand dunes stretch in both directions along the coast and the flood plains of the river extend behind the lodge to the main road. Here you can stroll along the un spoilt beaches, relax and absorb the beauty around you or swim and snorkel in solitude from shell-strewn beaches. The magnificent restaurant and bar area has a large open deck overlooking the estuary and ocean. Adjoining the well stocked bar is the restaurant where the resident chef will serve you w...

Country #19 in 2015 was RWANDA! This country was hands down our favorite in Africa. Despite all the challenges, struggles and down right treacherous past the country has had, the government and people are making great gains to preserve their beautiful piece of this planet. The streets are clean, the people overwhelmingly friendly and hard working, plus the wildlife is out of this World. Gorilla trekking in the Virunga Mountains goes on our top 5 travel experiences of all time. Check out what adventure we are doing right now at http://www.divergenttravelers.com/

This is a very short chronicle of my recent 6 day media trip to Rwanda, courtesy RwandAir & the Rwandan Development Board (RDB), in which I went around the country and learned a lot about Rwandan Culture and Tourism. Rwanda has come a long way from its history of Genocide, turning what could have been the most crippling part of its' story into a triumphant one, with developments in Agriculture, Infrastructure, and of course, Tourism, which has become a big revenue source for the nation. It's impossible to show the true beauty of Rwanda, I hope my small story encourages you to visit and see more. Activities (In no particular order) Umuganda (Community Service - Yes, I helped clear roads and build a house). King's Palace Museum & the Ethnographic Museum, Musanze Caves Kivu 'Kwitizina' (na...
