It's marketing itself as the real Africa and if you visit any of the South African reserves before you go to Zambia you will agree with them! There are no traffic jams around the Lions here! The future for Zambia also looks a lot brighter than many of its neighbours, its new government under President Sata seems to be behind conservation. It recently declined granting a uranium mining licence in Lower Zambezi National Park because of the environmental damage it would cause
Organised safaris are the way to go in Zambia. Self driving is an option but is only for the fully self sufficient. Zambia is home to some of Africa's greatest national parks. Lower Zambezi, South Luangwa and the frankly huge (the worlds second biggest NP) Kafue are the main ones, but North Luangwa and the virtually inaccessible Luiwa Plains are worth a mention. Although sometimes you might find the borders of them hard to define, there are no fences in Zambia, it really is the Africa of your imagination.
Safaris are through various operators, many being very expensive, but good value options are available and it's best to use a local established operator such as The River Safari Company.

Zimbabwe is a country in Southern Africa. It is landlocked and is surrounded by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the Southwest, Zambia to the Northwest, and Mozambique to the east and north.
The Zambezi river forms the natural boundary with Zambia and when in full flood (February-April) the massive Victoria Falls on the river forms the world's largest curtain of falling water. The Victoria Falls are a major tourist attraction.
Once known as the Breadbasket of Africa, since 2000, Zimbabwe has undergone an economic collapse and the rule of law has gradually but largely broken down, although there have been a few signs of improvement since the theoretical formation of a unity Government in 2009 and the Zimbabwean economy has been on the rebound. GDP grew by more than 5% in the year 2010 and 2011, from a very low base. Growth is forecast to increase, buoyed by high mineral prices and the improving agriculture sector.

From the impressive granite stone complex that was once built, the ruins span 1,800 ac (700 ha) and cover a radius of 100-200 mi (160-320 km).

So this summer I flew all over to D.R Congo. This was one of the best experince of my life. I was in 3 different cities. Kinshasa, Kisangani and Buta. 2 hour flight from Kinshasa to Kisangani and from there we drove about 7 hours to Buta. Pretty long way, but it was all worth it ;) I met some of the most amazing people down there. I fell in love especially with the kids - They were so adorable and I miss them so much hehe ;D Here is what I caputured. Most of the footage is from Buta :) Hope you like it! God bless - Lebo Akatio

It is a deep dive into the heartland of Africa, into the mysterious Democratic Republic of Congo. A dream of many backpackers and often cited as a dangerous country to travel. Moving from A to B in the DRC is an adventure for outsiders and still challenge for locals and not everything is true about what comes into your mind for Congo. Yes, it still struggles for peace in its eastern region. The UN and other organizations trying to stabilize and support the country and as many refugees from other countries flood over the border, it is a challenge to be faced here. Despite all these efforts, for me Congo resembles still an authentic and real Africa off the beaten track. Rarely a visitor crosses into the DRC and while in Congo for little bit over three weeks, I only met two other travelers - excluding two fellow travelers I met just at the start of my journey.
Finding sights on a map of this huge country is a challenge, but reaching them is even harder. My adventure begins along the border to Rwanda, climbing an active volcano and with a visit to the famous mountain gorillas in the Virunga National Park. Continuing in Kisangani, the "touristy" sights almost vanish and a historical-shaded drift on the Congo River begins. Following the call of the jungle, I leave the river and take a hard daytrip over the washed-away infrastructure of the north-western Congo. While a boat ride may take a couple of more days, maybe even weeks, I head to Mbandaka by plane before finishing the journey in Kinshasa, the shiny, even too shiny, capital of the DRC.

National park
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

Democratic republic
A democratic republic is, strictly speaking, a country that is both a republic and a democracy. It is one where ultimate authority and power is derived from the citizens, and the government itself is run through elected officials.
However, in recent practice, countries that have described themselves as democratic republics have not always held free or fair elections. Two examples of this were the German Democratic Republic and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, communist states commonly known as East Germany and North Vietnam. Another is the Democratic Republic of the Congo which in 2011 was rated by Freedom House as a "not free" country, having a rating of 6.0 (1.0 being completely free and 7.0 being completely unfree). Also, the 'Democratic People's Republic of Korea', commonly known as North Korea, is rated the least democratic in the world, run by a dictator. A republic is a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote.

Places to Visit is an Extended Play released by British group Saint Etienne in May 1999. It showed the band moving toward the experimental electronic sound that they perfected on their next official full-length, 2000's Sound of Water.

The Republic of the Congo (French: République du Congo), also known as Congo, Congo Republic,West Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville, is a country located in Central Africa. It is bordered by five countries: Gabon to the west; Cameroon to the northwest; the Central African Republic to the northeast; the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the east and south; and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda to the southwest.
The region was dominated by Bantu-speaking tribes, who built trade links leading into the Congo River basin. Congo-Brazzaville was formerly part of the French colony of Equatorial Africa. Upon independence in 1960, the former colony of French Congo became the Republic of the Congo. The People's Republic of the Congo was a Marxist–Leninist one-party state from 1970 to 1991. Multi-party elections have been held since 1992, although a democratically elected government was ousted in the 1997 Republic of the Congo Civil War and President Denis Sassou Nguesso has ruled for 26 of the past 36 years.

Kinshasa, Kisangani and Buta. 2 hour flight from Kinshasa to Kisangani and from there we drove about 7 hours to Buta. Pretty long way, but it was all worth it ;) I met some of the most amazing people down there. I fell in love especially with the kids - They were so adorable and I miss them so much hehe ;D Here is what I caputured. Most of the footage is from Buta :) Hope you like it! It is a deep dive into the heartland of Africa, into the mysterious Democratic Republic of Congo. A dream of many backpackers and often cited as a dangerous country to travel. Moving from A to B in the DRC is an adventure for outsiders and still challenge for locals and not everything is true about what comes into your mind for Congo. Yes, it still struggles for peace in its eastern region. The UN and other organizations trying to stabilize and support the country and as many refugees from other countries flood over the border, it is a challenge to be faced here. Despite all these efforts, for me Congo resembles still an authentic and real Africa off the beaten track. Rarely a visitor crosses into the DRC and while in Congo for little bit over three weeks, I only met two other travelers - excluding two fellow travelers I met just at the start of my journey. Finding sights on a map of this huge country is a challenge, but reaching them is even harder. My adventure begins along the border to Rwanda, climbing an active volcano and with a visit to the famous mountain gorillas in the Virunga National Park. Continuing in Kisangani, the "touristy" sights almost vanish and a historical-shaded drift on the Congo River begins. Following the call of the jungle, I leave the river and take a hard daytrip over the washed-away infrastructure of the north-western Congo. While a boat ride may take a couple of more days, maybe even weeks, I head to Mbandaka by plane before finishing the journey in Kinshasa, the shiny, even too shiny, capital of the DRC. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 2nd largest country in Africa and 11th largest in the world. At 2,344,858 square kilometers, the DRC covers a land area larger than the combined territories of Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania. 2. With a population of over 80 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 4th most-populated nation in Africa and the 18th most populated country in the world. The people represent over 200 ethnic groups, with nearly 250 languages and dialects spoken throughout the country. Kinshasa, the capital, is the largest French-speaking city in the world. 3. Despite being a poor and conflict-ridden country, the DRC boasts a space program. Privately financed by the Développement Tous Azimuts (DTA), with significant government support, the Troposphere rockets are expected to send cargo to outer space in the near future. 4. Kinshasa and Brazzaville in the next-door Republic of Congo are the closest capital cities in the world (with the exception of Vatican City and Rome). A bridge across the Congo River still needs to be constructed to connect the two political centers. 5. The great apes, such as the bonobos and the eastern lowland gorillas, can be found only in Congo. Along with the common chimpanzee, the bonobo is the closest extant relative to humans. 6. The DRC used to have a very strange form of currency, called the Katanga cross. The metal is made of copper and is shaped in the form of an X. The Katanga cross underwent a change of value from being owned by tribal chiefs, who used them for large transactions or rituals, to a more widespread use for purchasing perishable goods, although its main use was to bind marriages. 7. The DRC is among the most resource-rich countries on the planet, yet it continues to have an extremely poor population. Tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold have been dubbed “conflict minerals.” Armed groups use the profits from sales for campaigns of violence. It's marketing itself as the real Africa and if you visit any of the South African reserves before you go to Zambia you will agree with them! There are no traffic jams around the Lions here! The future for Zambia also looks a lot brighter than many of its neighbours, its new government under President Sata seems to be behind conservation. It recently declined granting a uranium mining licence in Lower Zambezi National Park because of the environmental damage it would cause
Organised safaris are the way to go in Zambia. Self driving is an option but is only for the fully self sufficient. Zambia is home to some of Africa's greatest national parks. Lower Zambezi, South Luangwa and the frankly huge (the worlds second biggest NP) Kafue are the main ones, but North Luangwa and the virtually inaccessible Luiwa Plains are worth a mention. Although sometimes you might find the borders of them hard to define, there are no fences in Zambia, it really is the Africa of your imagination.
Safaris are through various operators, many being very expensive, but good value options are available and it's best to use a local established operator such as The River Safari Company.

The Zambezi river forms the natural boundary with Zambia and when in full flood (February-April) the massive Victoria Falls on the river forms the world's largest curtain of falling water. The Victoria Falls are a major tourist attraction.
Once known as the Breadbasket of Africa, since 2000, Zimbabwe has undergone an economic collapse and the rule of law has gradually but largely broken down, although there have been a few signs of improvement since the theoretical formation of a unity Government in 2009 and the Zimbabwean economy has been on the rebound. GDP grew by more than 5% in the year 2010 and 2011, from a very low base. Growth is forecast to increase, buoyed by high mineral prices and the improving agriculture sector.

Hwange National Park. Located between Victoria Falls and Bulawayo, the park boasts more than 100 different animal species and over 400 species of birds. It is one of the few great elephants sanctuaries in Africa with over 30,000 elephants.
Matobo Hills National Park. Also known as Matopos, this small park close to Bulawayo was awarded a UNESCO world heritage status in 2003 for its fascinating natural features and wildlife.
Mana Pools National Park. Mana Pools National Park, South of the Zambezi river in the North of Zimbabwe, is a UNESCO world heritage site. A remote location, it welcomes happy few safari lovers with an abundance of elephants, hippos, lions, antelopes and other animals, and over 350 bird species, in stunning landscapes.
Great Zimbabwe Ruins. Located in the vicinity of Masvingo, the 3rd Zimbabwean city, Great Zimbabwe ruins are the remains of one of greatest African civilizations after the Pharaohs: the Kingdom of Great Zimbabwe dominated the area from present Zimbabwe, East of Botswana and South East of Mozambique in the late Iron Age (1100-1450 AD). From the impressive granite stone complex that was once built, the ruins span 1,800 ac (700 ha) and cover a radius of 100-200 mi (160-320 km).

So this summer I flew all over to D.R Congo. This was one of the best experince of my life. I was in 3 different cities. It is a deep dive into the heartland of Africa, into the mysterious Democratic Republic of Congo. A dream of many backpackers and often cited as a dangerous country to travel. Moving from A to B in the DRC is an adventure for outsiders and still challenge for locals and not everything is true about what comes into your mind for Congo. Yes, it still struggles for peace in its eastern region. The UN and other organizations trying to stabilize and support the country and as many refugees from other countries flood over the border, it is a challenge to be faced here. Despite all these efforts, for me Congo resembles still an authentic and real Africa off the beaten track. Rarely a visitor crosses into the DRC and while in Congo for little bit over three weeks, I only met two other travelers - excluding two fellow travelers I met just at the start of my journey.
Finding sights on a map of this huge country is a challenge, but reaching them is even harder. My adventure begins along the border to Rwanda, climbing an active volcano and with a visit to the famous mountain gorillas in the Virunga National Park. Continuing in Kisangani, the "touristy" sights almost vanish and a historical-shaded drift on the Congo River begins. Following the call of the jungle, I leave the river and take a hard daytrip over the washed-away infrastructure of the north-western Congo. While a boat ride may take a couple of more days, maybe even weeks, I head to Mbandaka by plane before finishing the journey in Kinshasa, the shiny, even too shiny, capital of the DRC.

1. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 2nd largest country in Africa and 11th largest in the world. At 2,344,858 square kilometers, the DRC covers a land area larger than the combined territories of Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania.
2. With a population of over 80 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 4th most-populated nation in Africa and the 18th most populated country in the world. The people represent over 200 ethnic groups, with nearly 250 languages and dialects spoken throughout the country. Kinshasa, the capital, is the largest French-speaking city in the world.
3. Despite being a poor and conflict-ridden country, the DRC boasts a space program. Privately financed by the Développement Tous Azimuts (DTA), with significant government support, the Troposphere rockets are expected to send cargo to outer space in the near future.
4. Kinshasa and Brazzaville in the next-door Republic of Congo are the closest capital cities in the world (with the exception of Vatican City and Rome). A bridge across the Congo River still needs to be constructed to connect the two political centers.
5. The great apes, such as the bonobos and the eastern lowland gorillas, can be found only in Congo. Along with the common chimpanzee, the bonobo is the closest extant relative to humans.
6. The DRC used to have a very strange form of currency, called the Katanga cross. The metal is made of copper and is shaped in the form of an X. The Katanga cross underwent a change of value from being owned by tribal chiefs, who used them for large transactions or rituals, to a more widespread use for purchasing perishable goods, although its main use was to bind marriages.
7. The DRC is among the most resource-rich countries on the planet, yet it continues to have an extremely poor population. Tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold have been dubbed “conflict minerals.” Armed groups use the profits from sales for campaigns of violence.

The excitement continues to mount as a tree, or even a bush, could suddenly reveal one of the region’s remarkable Mountain Gorillas. Suddenly from behind a bush the first one appears! Unlike their reputation of old, these mighty creatures are far from aggressive and Man originally thought of these animals as highly dangerous and unpredictable. However recent studies have proven that this is untrue and that the gorilla is an exceptionally peace loving creature. Even today the precise size of the gorilla population is not known. However, it is believed that around three hundred and eighty Mountain Gorillas inhabit the protected region of the Virunga Mountains. Various sounds such as screaming, whimpering, barking and grunting play an important if not vital role in the daily communication of the gorilla as the various members of a group may not see each other for much of the time. By communicating in this way they learn of the mood and current whereabouts of the other members of the group. On average an adult utters around eight sounds an hour. Due to constant supervision and strict policing these fascinating creatures that were until quite recently threatened with extinction, have managed to survive to the present day. The excitement continues to mount as a tree, or even a bush, could suddenly reveal one of the region’s remarkable Mountain Gorillas. Suddenly from behind a bush the first one appears! Unlike their reputation of old, these mighty creatures are far from aggressive and Man originally thought of these animals as highly dangerous and unpredictable. However recent studies have proven that this is untrue and that the gorilla is an exceptionally peace loving creature. Even today the precise size of the gorilla population is not known. However, it is believed that around three hundred and eighty Mountain Gorillas inhabit the protected region of the Virunga Mountains. Various sounds such as screaming, whimpering, barking and grunting play an important if not vital role in the daily communication of the gorilla as the various members of a group may not see each other for much of the time. By communicating in this way they learn of the mood and current whereabouts of the other members of the group. On average an adult utters around eight sounds an hour. Due to constant supervision and strict policing these fascinating creatures that were until quite recently threatened with extinction, have managed to survive to the present day. Long may this continue!

Our journey begins in nearby Zimbabwe that is located close to Botswana’s northern frontier at Victoria Falls that is undoubtedly one of the most impressive natural wonders in the world. Eighty kilometres west and we have crossed the Botswana border and arrive in the first large city in the north of the country, Kasane, that is located on the Chobe River and marks the country’s frontier with Namibia. In addition to growing tourism the fishing industry is also important to Kasane’s economy. The river contains an abundance of fish and so the local fishermen are provided with a good income to support their families. Since 1915 Ma-Un has been Botswana’s main city and until the beginning of the 1990s was only accessible via dusty gravel roads, a border town on the edge of a vast wilderness. The state run Moremi National Park that extends for around a hundred thousand hectares is the largest nature reserve in the Okavango Delta. It is located on Chief’s Island, the largest island in the region. In recent years further private wildlife reserves have been established that are well worth a visit and are also strictly controlled and protected natural habitats. Amid the African wilderness we arrive at a luxurious lodge that is not only the ideal starting point for many safaris but also provides a good degree of relaxation after an exhausting day out. Suddenly two members of the San Tribe approach the lodge. These ‘Bushmen’ will accompany us on our journey into the Kalahari Desert that is also their home. Elephant herds on the Chobe River, the vast wilderness of the Kalahari and the mystique of the Okavango Delta help to make Botswana one of the last great paradises on Earth!

In Sousse, the simple fort of Ribat is probably the oldest Islamic building in North Africa, in which Muslim soldiers lived in monastery-like isolation and in the town’s Archaeological Museum there is a fantastic range of mosaics, predominantly from Punic and Roman excavations. Gabes is an oasis town which overflows with luxuriant floral splendour. By horse and carriage visitors can travel through one of the most beautiful maritime oases in Tunisia where, under 500,000 date palms, tobacco, henna, pumpkins, apricots and bananas thrive. The focal point of important caravan routes and trading centre for goods from Libya and Black Africa, Medenine is a very charming and lively city. Its reinforced honeycomb-shaped caves were the extraordinary-looking buildings that many will recall from the film ‘Star Wars’. The Sahara is the largest desert on earth, with different landscapes such as rock deserts, salt deserts and serene oases. Kebili is located on the edge of a huge salt lake and is a typical desert village with a green oasis and Artesian springs which provide water for its fruit and vegetable gardens. The Arusha National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Africa and its green forests are a perfect playground for the countless monkeys that live there. Around twenty million years ago its landscape was created due to volcanic activity and wonderful craters were formed as well as impressive volcanic cones. The swampy forest on the slopes of the Rift Valley features more than thirty different varieties of tree, an impressive area that offers distant views across fascinating and untouched nature and for the many wealthy tourists who spend their money in the region there are various special locations that provide excellent accommodation. The origins of the Selous Game Reserve date back to German colonial times at the beginning of the twentieth century. Later, under British rule, they were united into a large protected area. Tanzania is a natural paradise that is still known by only a few. An exotic country and one that is still waiting to be explored!

Sun City is a magnificent fantasy world full of African ambience and the Sun City Hotel is the casino that made Sol Kerzner the richest man in South Africa, whereas the futuristic Cascades Hotel derived its name from its wonderful setting of waterfalls, pools and lush plant life. Let us Go to the Bas Congo, the western and costal province of the democratic republic of the Congo.
And all starts here, at the 7th Street in the Limete town, a suburb of Kinshasa, the capital of the Congo. The trip starts early at 7:oo AM prompt as planned.
The Congo is this vast giant country second to Algeria in surface, and the size of all the western Europ all countries included, a quarter of the USA surface. It is really big with 70 millions people leaving in this greatly tropical country where the equator line passes in the right middle.
And I have never stopped of dreaming of visiting each single province of it. Congo is subdised in 11 functional provinces, and I have been dreaming of visiting the Bas Congo since my geography and history teachers told it is a province where the modern Congo started. Precolonial, and colonial history and drama was first based in the Bas-Congo, and at some scale slave trade went on quietly here.
Yes, I dreamed at setting my foot where Diego Cao and Morton Stanley , those courageous European explorers had been once in Early modern Congolese era. Diego Cao came from the discovery of the sea outfall of the river Congo down in the Atlantic, and decided to navigate upward stream. On this bus to the bas-congo, it will not last before I make 2 friends who shared the same interest of visiting the Bas-Congo with the eye of a learner who craves for historical knowledge. Yes, Kitoko was busy writing names of towns as the bus went on, and Nkumbu, was listening to our conversation from his front seat, and jumbed in to share his knowledge of the Congo. He turned next to be our tourist guide because he has travelled all over the Bas-Congo. He is a true believer of community development by the grassroot.
Here I am now in the Bas Congo after my geography class in the province of Nord Kivu, east of the Congo, in the early 80s. From Kinshasa the capital of the Congo, we went on thru villages and towns of Sona bata, Kisantu, Kimpese, kwilu-ngongo, mbanza ngungu, Kinza mvuete, Matadi, and Boma. Many of these spots are tourist destinations as our coming up video will testify. Kisantu has a fantatistic botanical garden, Mbanza Ngungu has pretty caves in a dream landscape. Matadi and specifically Boma have colonial and historical sites, all educational and recreational along the river Congo.
One important note, Bas-Congo is so close to Angola that it is hard to tell who comes from where, Congolese and Angolan mingles together, as their countries are both in hand reach.
One can not talk about the modern Congo without mentioning the name ofMorton Stanley, the journalist and the explorer of the Congo. He came in as an envoy of King LeopoldII who wanted to conquer new land for growing his personal wealth. Stanley made 999 days from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. With a special canoe, he made it through the rapids of the Congo river along with him were 356 slaves. But, in Boma and Moanda, only 114 slaves survived the expedition. Sir Stanley started mapping out a sketch of Congo development by starting building road, and railways. He ended in the British parliament, and died in England with his Congolese nickname Bula Matari to means stone breaker.
And to say the least, matadi the capital of Bas Congo means Rock. On this day we have travelled through a town built on Rocks. Isn't amazing.
This trip took us 10 h from Kinshasa to Boma where we rested for the night.

Let us Go to the Bas Congo, the western and costal province of the democratic republic of the Congo.
And all starts here, at the 7th Street in the Limete town, a suburb of Kinshasa, the capital of the Congo. The trip starts early at 7:oo AM prompt as planned.
The Congo is this vast giant country second to Algeria in surface, and the size of all the western Europ all countries included, a quarter of the USA surface. It is really big with 70 millions people leaving in this greatly tropical country where the equator line passes in the right middle.
And I have never stopped of dreaming of visiting each single province of it. Congo is subdised in 11 functional provinces, and I have been dreaming of visiting the Bas Congo since my geography and history teachers told it is a province where the modern Congo started. Precolonial, and colonial history and drama was first based in the Bas-Congo, and at some scale slave trade went on quietly here.
Yes, I dreamed at setting my foot where Diego Cao and Morton Stanley , those courageous European explorers had been once in Early modern Congolese era. Diego Cao came from the discovery of the sea outfall of the river Congo down in the Atlantic, and decided to navigate upward stream. Sprague Lake is one of the region’s many glacial lakes and is ideal for walkers as well as anglers and boat enthusiasts, and several ranches offer accommodation. Ghost towns, gold mines, ancient cultures and mountain paradises, Native Indians, explorers, fur traders and gold prospectors, all the ingredients of the colourful history of America’s wild West. Colorado is indeed a place of spectacular nature and breathtaking adventure!

To the south of RABAT lies Chellah, City of the Dead. The Merinde necropolis has a square tower and is surrounded by a wall made of crushed loam, proof that the Cathagers built a trading centre here in the 3rd century B.C. Amongst the tombs, the sarcophagus of Sultan Abou El-Hassan stands proud with its artistic engravings. Fez El-Bali dates back to the Middle Ages and contains narrow streets, a pungent mixture of scents, the penetrating sound of craftsmen and fine examples of the Moorish art of building. This ‘temple of a thousand images of god’ is nevertheless very popular among devout Buddhists and is a place of silent prayer. The Yarlung Valley is full of history such as possessing the oldest field in Tibet, as well as the oldest village that is located at the foot of the country’s oldest fortress, Yom Bu La Khang, the rock palace of the country’s first mystic king. One of the largest monuments in Tibetan architecture is the unique Kumbum Chörten, a three-dimensional mandala that can be entered. Eyes decorate the upper part of the Stupa. The ritual walkabout begins on the lowest level with simple deities then follows the entire Pantheon of Tibet, immortalised in both sculptures and wall paintings. A short journey leads into the isolated loneliness of the prairie and to lion feeding at the Okapuka Ranch in which an Austrian keeps lions in their natural environment. A popular holiday resort on the mouth of the River Swakop and the final destination of the rail journey, Swakopumund, through whose harbour everything that was used in German West Africa was transported, resulting in a regular trading route between Swakopmund and Hamburg for more than ten years - a hint of Germany on the edge of the desert! In Swakopumund there are architectural treasures that were rented out in the days of the Kaiser and are reminiscent of various houses in Berlin. This is a part of Germany that no longer exists in Germany itself. Moon Valley is bizarre and extra-terrestrial and for millions of years it has withstood the erosive power of the Swakop. With its deep-cut valleys and no vegetation in sight, the endless rocky landscape seems unfriendly, life threatening and impassable. Namutoni Camp is situated in the centre of the Etosha National Park and has a history that dates back to 1851. Thirsty antelopes and zebras rendezvous at a watering hole while a herd of elephants drink at another. Namibia is, quite rightly, a much sought after tourist destination. White deserts, wild animals, mountains strewn with ravines, and white beaches - Africa’s south west is full of more than a few colourful surprises!

The European kingdom of Holland, known also as the Netherlands, was until relatively recently a powerful trading nation that possessed many colonies.Most of this land of tulips, windmills and canals is located below sea level and in the 17th century was the most prosperous country in Europe. Amsterdam is Holland`s splendid metropolis, a city of canals and gables where almost anything is permitted as long as it does no harm. Today the view across the main square and royal castle gives little hint that the city is supported by stakes and is the largest lakeland village in the world. In a huge open-air area between Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport, every ten years an international exhibition of garden architecture is held, the Floriade. It features hundreds of blossoming show gardens that are admired by millions of visitors from all over the world. In the 16th century life on the ocean wave brought glorious times for the city of Edam that is now world famous for its cheese of the same name. More than thirty shipyards once prospered in the city and the fleet of legendary Dutch hero, Michiel De Ruyter, was built there. Mijmegen lies proudly on the banks of the River Waal. The origins of Holland’s oldest city are to be found in the Roman settlement of Noviomagum. The triangular market square of this university and Hanseatic town is dominated by the Waag House, a red-bricked building of Renaissance design. The Molens Van Kinderdijk is a fascinating landscape of windmills and a Unesco World Heritage Sight. Its nineteen windmills are world famous and of course typical of Holland. The fascination of old cities, dreamy fairytale-like villages, paintings by some of the world’s greatest artists, bicycles and windmill: Holland is very much a land of the familiar and also the exotic.

Bavaria is the largest German territory. Its typical atmosphere is given by little towns and villages. Wooden shells, high red tiled roofs with many little skylights, old signboards, town walls, ancient churches, domes and steeples, narrow streets and riverbanks, huge green areas and many flowers take us to a wonderfully calm and merry world. Beside the well known Octoberfest holder Munich and the medieval older town look keeper Nuremberg, Regensburg and Augsburg there are castles like the romantic Neuschwanstein that are waiting for the traveller. There are glittering lakes in the green pinewood like the Königssee and the Chiemsee, and mountaintops like the snow-capped Zugspitze. Though Bavaria is only one territory within the German territories everyone can feel it is quite different from the others. It is richer, friendlier and its atmosphere is more delightful than the country’s other territories.
