The Democratic Republic of Congo has been on the brink of violence over the past two weeks.
President Joseph Kabila's two-term and final mandate ended in mid-December, but he had announced he would stay in office and postponed elections. That led to violent confrontations between security forces and anti-government protesters and at least 40 people were killed in the unrest.
But after weeks of tense talks with the opposition, Kabila has agreed to step down by the end of 2017, under a last-minute deal.
If this deal, which is being backed by the country's influential Catholic church, holds, it will be the first peaceful transfer of power since DRC's independence in 1960.
So will a further crisis be averted in Democratic Republic of Congo?

But British businessman Ketankumar Kotecha sees nothing wrong in buying casiterite from the militias. "If I didn't do it, someone else would. I am not here as some kind of moral saviour."

Rape City (2013): Examining the terrible rape problem that afflicts the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
At least 200,000 people have been raped in DRC since 1996. With devastating frankness National Army soldiers confess to raping women and children in the towns they were supposed to be protecting from rebels.

"Raping gave us a lot of pleasure. When we rape we feel free", confesses a Congolese National Army soldier. He admits to raping 53 women and children, some as young as 5 years old. In this endemic cycle of violence, children born of rape are getting raped. According to Ida Sawyer from Human Rights Watch, the army commanders responsible for these horrific abuses are not brought to justice; instead they are often "rewarded and given positions of power and wealth". Efforts are being made to address this state of impunity; those in charge "must be pursued on a criminal level for these serious crimes", says the Military Prosecutor of North Kivu. But with the judicial system mostly fractured and forgotten, the only ones bearing the consequences are the victims. Their faith in the country has plummeted; as one victim says, "our army has looted and raped their own people. Our life in Congo has no meaning".

The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims.
CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent.
In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks.
Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive.
CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians.
"Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement.
The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo got its independence from Belgium on June 30th 1960, the country was the second most industrialized on the continent after South Africa. It had First World infrastructure, First World farming and this country was on the verge to become a full developed country. But The Congo Civil War, or Congo Crisis, was a complex political tumult that began just days following Belgium's granting of Congolese independence in 1960.Congo's first elected prime minister was Patrice Lumumba who was immediately faced with a breakdown of order. There was an army revolt while secessionist groups from the mineral-rich province of Katanga made their move and Belgian paratroopers returned, supposedly to restore security. Lumumba made a fateful step - he turned to the Soviet Union for help. This set off panic in London and Washington, who feared the Soviets would get a foothold in Africa much as they had done in Cuba. Those are some of the reasons why Lumumba was killed by the CIA and the Belgian secret services, until today the crime has gone unpunished. Mobutu Sese Seko, the man who dominated country for three decades, came to power with military backing - and succeeded in staying there by successfully playing rival army factions off against one another.Today, the Democratic Republic of Congo is in the turmoil and women are being raped by different militia groups. This country is my maternal country of origin and it concerns me that a county with so much potential fails to rise.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (/ˈkɒŋɡoʊ/; French pronunciation: [kɔ̃ɡo]; French: République démocratique du Congo), also known as DR Congo, DRC, DROC, RDC, Congo-Kinshasa, or simply Congo is a country located in Central Africa. From 1971 to 1997 it was named Zaïre. The DRC borders the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan to the north; Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania to the east; Zambia and Angola to the south; and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It is the second largest country in Africa by area, the largest in Subsaharan Africa, and the eleventh largest in the world. With a population of over 75 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the most populated officially Francophone country, the fourth most populated nation in Africa and the nineteenth most populated country in the world.
The Congolese Civil Wars, which began in 1996, brought about the end of Mobutu Sese Seko's 31-year reign and devastated the country. The wars ultimately involved nine African nations, multiple groups of UN peacekeepers and twenty armed groups, and resulted in the deaths of 5.4 million people.

Democratic republic
A democratic republic is, strictly speaking, a country that is both a republic and a democracy. It is one where ultimate authority and power is derived from the citizens, and the government itself is run through elected officials.
However, in recent practice, countries that have described themselves as democratic republics have not always held free or fair elections. Two examples of this were the German Democratic Republic and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, communist states commonly known as East Germany and North Vietnam. Another is the Democratic Republic of the Congo which in 2011 was rated by Freedom House as a "not free" country, having a rating of 6.0 (1.0 being completely free and 7.0 being completely unfree). Also, the 'Democratic People's Republic of Korea', commonly known as North Korea, is rated the least democratic in the world, run by a dictator. A republic is a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote.

The Republic of the Congo (French: République du Congo), also known as Congo, Congo Republic,West Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville, is a country located in Central Africa. It is bordered by five countries: Gabon to the west; Cameroon to the northwest; the Central African Republic to the northeast; the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the east and south; and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda to the southwest.
The region was dominated by Bantu-speaking tribes, who built trade links leading into the Congo River basin. Congo-Brazzaville was formerly part of the French colony of Equatorial Africa. Upon independence in 1960, the former colony of French Congo became the Republic of the Congo. The People's Republic of the Congo was a Marxist–Leninist one-party state from 1970 to 1991. Multi-party elections have been held since 1992, although a democratically elected government was ousted in the 1997 Republic of the Congo Civil War and President Denis Sassou Nguesso has ruled for 26 of the past 36 years.

Complete news bulletins from Kuala Lumpur stopped on 30 September 2010 and from Washington DC on 28 January 2011; they were replaced by news from Doha. All news inserts from Kuala Lumpur ceased in early 2011 and from Washington DC they ceased on 15 April 2012. By contrast, Al Jazeera English is one of the few global media outlets to maintain an agency in Gaza, and in Harare.

Rape City (2013): Examining the terrible rape problem that afflicts the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) At least 200,000 people have been raped in DRC since 1996. With devastating frankness National Army soldiers confess to raping women and children in the towns they were supposed to be protecting from rebels. He admits to raping 53 women and children, some as young as 5 years old. In this endemic cycle of violence, children born of rape are getting raped. According to Ida Sawyer from Human Rights Watch, the army commanders responsible for these horrific abuses are not brought to justice; instead they are often "rewarded and given positions of power and wealth". Efforts are being made to address this state of impunity; those in charge "must be pursued on a criminal level for these serious crimes", says the Military Prosecutor of North Kivu. But with the judicial system mostly fractured and forgotten, the only ones bearing the consequences are the victims. Their faith in the country has plummeted; as one victim says, "our army has looted and raped their own people. Our life in Congo has no meaning". Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims. CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent. In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks. Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive. CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians. "Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement. The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled. The Democratic Republic of the Congo got its independence from Belgium on June 30th 1960, the country was the second most industrialized on the continent after South Africa. It had First World infrastructure, First World farming and this country was on the verge to become a full developed country. But The Congo Civil War, or Congo Crisis, was a complex political tumult that began just days following Belgium's granting of Congolese independence in 1960.Congo's first elected prime minister was Patrice Lumumba who was immediately faced with a breakdown of order. There was an army revolt while secessionist groups from the mineral-rich province of Katanga made their move and Belgian paratroopers returned, supposedly to restore security. Lumumba made a fateful step - he turned to the Soviet Union for help. This set off panic in London and Washington, who feared the Soviets would get a foothold in Africa much as they had done in Cuba. Those are some of the reasons why Lumumba was killed by the CIA and the Belgian secret services, until today the crime has gone unpunished. Mobutu Sese Seko, the man who dominated country for three decades, came to power with military backing - and succeeded in staying there by successfully playing rival army factions off against one another.Today, the Democratic Republic of Congo is in the turmoil and women are being raped by different militia groups. At least 200,000 people have been raped in DRC since 1996. With devastating frankness National Army soldiers confess to raping women and children in the towns they were supposed to be protecting from rebels.

"Raping gave us a lot of pleasure. When we rape we feel free", confesses a Congolese National Army soldier. He admits to raping 53 women and children, some as young as 5 years old. In this endemic cycle of violence, children born of rape are getting raped. According to Ida Sawyer from Human Rights Watch, the army commanders responsible for these horrific abuses are not brought to justice; instead they are often "rewarded and given positions of power and wealth". Efforts are being made to address this state of impunity; those in charge "must be pursued on a criminal level for these serious crimes", says the Military Prosecutor of North Kivu. But with the judicial system mostly fractured and forgotten, the only ones bearing the consequences are the victims. Their faith in the country has plummeted; as one victim says, "our army has looted and raped their own people. Our life in Congo has no meaning".

The Central African Republic's capital of Bangui has seen its Muslim population drop from 130,000 to under 1000 over the past few months. Over the past year, thousands across CAR have been killed and nearly a million have been displaced. The United Nations recently stated that the entire Western half of the country has now been cleansed of Muslims.
CAR has never fully recovered from France's colonial rule, and it has only known ten years of a civilian government - from 1993 to 2003 - since achieving independence in 1960. Coup after coup, often with French military involvement, has led many to refer to the country as a phantom state. The current conflict has now completely erased the rule of law and order, and left the UN and international community looking confused and impotent.
In March 2013, the Séléka, a mostly Muslim rebel alliance, rose up and overthrew the corrupt government of François Bozizé, while bringing terror and chaos across the country - pillaging, killing and raping with impunity. In response, mostly Christian self-defense forces, called the anti-balaka, formed to defend CAR against Séléka attacks.
Clashes grew more frequent throughout 2013 as the Séléka grew more ruthless. In December 2013, French and African troops went in to disarm the Séléka and staunch the bloodshed. The anti-balaka, seizing on a weakened Séléka, then went on the offensive.
CAR had no real history of religious violence, and the current conflict is not based on any religious ideology. The fighting, however, turned increasingly sectarian in the fall of 2013, with revenge killings becoming the norm. And as the Séléka's power waned, the anti-balaka fed their need for revenge by brutalizing Muslim civilians.
"Too few peacekeepers were deployed too late; the challenge of disarming the Séléka, containing the anti-balaka, and protecting the Muslim minority was underestimated," Human Rights Watch said in a recent statement.
The bloodshed has not stopped. The UN is still debating whether or not to send peacekeepers. Even if a peacekeeping operation is approved, it will take six months for troops to be assembled.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo got its independence from Belgium on June 30th 1960, the country was the second most industrialized on the continent after South Africa. It had First World infrastructure, First World farming and this country was on the verge to become a full developed country. But The Congo Civil War, or Congo Crisis, was a complex political tumult that began just days following Belgium's granting of Congolese independence in 1960.Congo's first elected prime minister was Patrice Lumumba who was immediately faced with a breakdown of order. There was an army revolt while secessionist groups from the mineral-rich province of Katanga made their move and Belgian paratroopers returned, supposedly to restore security. Lumumba made a fateful step - he turned to the Soviet Union for help. This set off panic in London and Washington, who feared the Soviets would get a foothold in Africa much as they had done in Cuba. Those are some of the reasons why Lumumba was killed by the CIA and the Belgian secret services, until today the crime has gone unpunished. Mobutu Sese Seko, the man who dominated country for three decades, came to power with military backing - and succeeded in staying there by successfully playing rival army factions off against one another.Today, the Democratic Republic of Congo is in the turmoil and women are being raped by different militia groups. This country is my maternal country of origin and it concerns me that a county with so much potential fails to rise.

Crossing Congo
It is a deep dive into the heartland of Africa, into the mysterious Democratic Republic of Congo. A dream of many backpackers and often cited as a dangerous country to travel. Moving from A to B in the DRC is an adventure for outsiders and still challenge for locals and not everything is true about what comes into your mind for Congo. Yes, it still struggles for peace in its eastern region. The UN and other organizations trying to stabilize and support the country and as many refugees from other countries flood over the border, it is a challenge to be faced here. While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings.

It is a deep dive into the heartland of Africa, into the mysterious Democratic Republic of Congo. A dream of many backpackers and often cited as a dangerous country to travel. Moving from A to B in the DRC is an adventure for outsiders and still challenge for locals and not everything is true about what comes into your mind for Congo. Yes, it still struggles for peace in its eastern region. The UN and other organizations trying to stabilize and support the country and as many refugees from other countries flood over the border, it is a challenge to be faced here. Despite all these efforts, for me Congo resembles still an authentic and real Africa off the beaten track. Rarely a visitor crosses into the DRC and while in Congo for little bit over three weeks, I only met two other travelers - excluding two fellow travelers I met just at the start of my journey.
Finding sights on a map of this huge country is a challenge, but reaching them is even harder. My adventure begins along the border to Rwanda, climbing an active volcano and with a visit to the famous mountain gorillas in the Virunga National Park. Continuing in Kisangani, the "touristy" sights almost vanish and a historical-shaded drift on the Congo River begins. Following the call of the jungle, I leave the river and take a hard daytrip over the washed-away infrastructure of the north-western Congo. While a boat ride may take a couple of more days, maybe even weeks, I head to Mbandaka by plane before finishing the journey in Kinshasa, the shiny, even too shiny, capital of the DRC.
