The Republic of the Congo (French: République du Congo), also known as Congo, Congo Republic,West Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville, is a country located in Central Africa. It is bordered by five countries: Gabon to the west; Cameroon to the northwest; the Central African Republic to the northeast; the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the east and south; and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda to the southwest.
The region was dominated by Bantu-speaking tribes, who built trade links leading into the Congo River basin. Congo-Brazzaville was formerly part of the French colony of Equatorial Africa. Upon independence in 1960, the former colony of French Congo became the Republic of the Congo. The People's Republic of the Congo was a Marxist–Leninist one-party state from 1970 to 1991. Multi-party elections have been held since 1992, although a democratically elected government was ousted in the 1997 Republic of the Congo Civil War and President Denis Sassou Nguesso has ruled for 26 of the past 36 years.
Pointe-Noire is the second largest city in the Republic of the Congo, following the capital of Brazzaville, and an autonomous department since 2004. Before this date it was the capital of the Kouilou region (now a separate department). It is situated on a headland between Pointe-Noire Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Pointe-Noire is the main commercial centre of the country and has a population of 715,334 (2007), expanding to well over 1 million when the entire metropolitan area is taken into account.
The climate is tropically hot and humid. September and October experience somewhat less rainfall than the rest of the year.
Pointe-Noire is a commune divided into six urban districts (arrondissements):
Pointe Noire's (Black Point) name originated from Portuguese navigators who saw a block of black rocks on the headland in 1484. From then on, Pointe Noire, called Ponta Negra, became a maritime reference, and then a small fishing village from 1883, after the French signed a treaty with local people, the Loangos.

Trans-Cameroon Railway (1964-1987) With its 886 km total length, the Trans-Cameroon Railway is a cornerstone of Cameroon’s social and economic development from its independence in 1960. It crosses the entire country, linking the Atlantic coast region to the northern internal region, and Cameroon to Chad, the Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, Nigeria, and Equatorial Guinea. Three quarters of the Trans-Cameroon runs through equatorial forest, while the reminder travel over savannah. In 1964 the improvements to the existing rail system and its expansion toward the northern region were commissioned to the Italian company Cogefar (Today part of the Salini Impregilo’s history, it was established in 1959 and merged in Impregilo in 1994), starting with the connection between the capital Yao...
After finally receiving my scooter in Franceville, Gabon I made the trip towards the Congo. But again, it wasn't without any lack of drama. I had two flat tires before I even made it to the border. I was planning on hitting the sand road of the Congo by about 8am, but with the flats, and the fact I was in the middle of nowhere, I didn't hit the sand until about 1030. The sand road in the Congo was absolutely grueling. There were so many times driving the road towards Oyo that I just about quit and set up at the side of the road to sleep for the night. Following the sand day I crashed at the house of a Lebanese expat for the night and pushed on to Brazzaville. Two days later, and I arrive at the outskirts of Brazzaville, Congo. But my visa expires today, so what will I do? Stay tuned....

In which John Green teaches you about the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which used to be Zaire, which used to be The Belgian Congo, which used to be the Congo Free State, which used to be the region surrounding the Congo River Basin in central Africa. So the history of this place is a little convoluted. The history of Congo is central to the history of central Africa, and the Congo Wars embroiled neighboring countries like Uganda and Rwanda. John will talk you through the history of Congo and the region. Watch more https://rtd.rt.com/tags/illegal-mining/ “Geological scandal” is a phrase often used to describe one of the world’s most resource-rich countries – the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite having extensive deposits of gold, diamonds, tungsten, and uranium, amongst many others, the abundance of internationally valued minerals has failed to bring any kind of prosperity to the country’s people. Colonial exploitation and a bloody civil war have left the Congolese with nothing from their country’s natural riches but misery and poverty.

The residents of Goma live in the shadow of Mt. Nyiragongo, one of the most active volcanoes in Africa. In 2002, it erupted and destroyed much of the city, leaving 400,000 people homeless. Afterwards, militants from Rwanda and battles between the Congolese government and rebel forces continued the devastation. The majority of people here live without electricity, running water or basic sanitation, and there are no jobs to be had. Armed gangs hide in the nearby jungles, tempting young men with a life away from crippling poverty. The threat of violence is constantly present. Despite the bleak conditions, one man is trying to make a difference in the lives of the city’s youth, who must usually work menial jobs to feed their families and often resort to theft. Charlie Makongo founded the Goma...

When we entered Congo, we expected to face the horrible situation which exists in the neighboring country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Surprisingly, we met only friendly policemen and people with a politeness that we had missed! Riding on the dirt roads which cross the virgin jungle was a highlight, despite it was rough. Those days we also cr...
