“La Sape” is a unique movement based in Congo that unites fashion-conscious men who are ready to splurge money they don’t really have on designer clothes. Dressing in stark contrast with their surroundings, these elegant ambiance-makers become true local celebrities… but this fame comes at a price.
The Republic of the Congo in Central Africa can’t boast of high standards of living. Yet, there are men here who are prepared to spend a fortune on designer suits. They call themselves “sapeurs” – members of the “La Sape” movement. “La Sape” comes from French and stands for “The Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People”. For its adherents, it’s all about style and elegance, the right combination of colours and textures, brand-names and the highest quality materials. They derive true joy from showing off their attire on the streets of Brazzaville – the country’s capital and the centre of the “La Sape” movement. Walking down dusty streets lined with clay houses, they turn heads and feel like kings. And there’s no price they won’t pay for this.
In fact, behind the image of success these dandies project, there are often stories of significant financial troubles caused by their extravagant hobby. To afford the price tag of their designer clothes, “sapeurs” have to save, borrow and even steal money, sometimes bringing ruin to their families. But even the grim consequences of their indulgent dressing habits often don’t stop “sapeurs” from spending money they don’t really have. They are in constant competition with each other and investing in their image is more important to them than improving their living conditions. Dressing smartly becomes a true addiction that is very hard to conquer.
However, some “sapeurs” do strive to find a balance between looking chic and being reasonable with their spending. They insist that the “La Sape” movement isn’t about designer suits but rather developing impeccable taste. They make an emphasis on learning to dress well but within one’s means. This way, style and elegance will demand fewer sacrifices from their devotees and will be accessible to more sophisticated men.

South African orthopaedic surgeons are working like car mechanics in the Republic of Congo to get the job done.
They arrived under the premise that Brazzavile Military hospital was the best equipped in the country after the depot explosions last week which left thousands maimed. But the tools are rusty, they don't have sterilisers and time is running out.
This morning (Monday) the first surgery was delayed because the hospital didn't have sterile scalpel blades, the most essential surgical tool.
"We are working half speed compared to South African," said chief surgeon Johnny de Beer. "Poorly qualified nurses, having to improvise with tools and the language barrier is all slowing us down," he said.
The local translators, mostly English language school teachers, have been thrown in the deep end handling everything from body searches to operation dialogue between patients and surgeons. One passed out during an amputation yesterday (Sunday).
Amputations are vital on many patients' arms and legs as infections rapidly eat at their wounds, turning them septic yellow.
Trauma doctor Rosanne Symons explained "First they draw with a marker pen where to cut. Then they tear through the skin and muscle using a scalpel, tying up the veins and nerve endings as they go." Once surgeons reach the bone they use a saw built for cutting wood ,and an industrial drill, till the bone can be separated by hand.
"Many patients refuse amputations. They will die if we can't convince them that it is the only treatment option left," said de Beer.
"Septic wounds are our greatest challenge. When the blast happened the operations were done fast and in huge volumes. Now we must operate on those same patients again," he said. "There are 20 patients left at this hospital who require critical operations. Time is running out," said fellow surgeon Hannes Joubert.
General surgeon Zafar Khan isn't fazed by the blood and guts, munching on some biltong he brought from Durban as he overlooks the senior surgeons operating.
While there was little to be admired about the working conditions of the South African doctors, down the hallway a woman was screaming her lungs out. Without painkillers or sedatives, 6 men held down the woman while Congolese surgeons cleaned her wounds with a tweezers and a wet cloth. "Kill me please kill me," she begged in French.

The capital of the Congo Republic is calm but tense after this week's civil war victory by General Sassou-Nguesso.
But four months of blood-letting have left Brazzaville in ruins.
Bodies are scattered throughout the streets. There is widespread looting. Many roadblocks are still in place and most shops remain closed.
The civil war may be over in the Congo Republic, but a four-month civil war has left countless victims wounded and in anguish.
In the hospitals of Kintele region, near Brazzaville, patients lie on the floor. The fortunate writhe around in bed, nursing their injuries.
Kintele's hospital continues to treat 200 to 300 patients a day, victims of land mines, stray bullets and unexploded shells.
There is no medicine and no bandages. The seriously injured are treated by amputation.
The remainder are left to bury their dead. Funerals, like the one for this rebel fighter, are daily affairs.
Rifle fire echoes throughout the streets as those in mourning express their anger and grief.
Militia forces of civil war victor Denis Sassou-Nguesso are moving to re-establish order in the Congo Republic.
But soon, some of the 800-thousand inhabitants estimated to have fled fighting in the capital, are expected to return.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (/ˈkɒŋɡoʊ/; French pronunciation: [kɔ̃ɡo]; French: République démocratique du Congo), also known as DR Congo, DRC, DROC, RDC, Congo-Kinshasa, or simply Congo is a country located in Central Africa. From 1971 to 1997 it was named Zaïre. The DRC borders the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan to the north; Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania to the east; Zambia and Angola to the south; and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It is the second largest country in Africa by area, the largest in Subsaharan Africa, and the eleventh largest in the world. With a population of over 75 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the most populated officially Francophone country, the fourth most populated nation in Africa and the nineteenth most populated country in the world.
The Congolese Civil Wars, which began in 1996, brought about the end of Mobutu Sese Seko's 31-year reign and devastated the country. The wars ultimately involved nine African nations, multiple groups of UN peacekeepers and twenty armed groups, and resulted in the deaths of 5.4 million people.

Democratic republic
A democratic republic is, strictly speaking, a country that is both a republic and a democracy. It is one where ultimate authority and power is derived from the citizens, and the government itself is run through elected officials.
However, in recent practice, countries that have described themselves as democratic republics have not always held free or fair elections. Two examples of this were the German Democratic Republic and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, communist states commonly known as East Germany and North Vietnam. Another is the Democratic Republic of the Congo which in 2011 was rated by Freedom House as a "not free" country, having a rating of 6.0 (1.0 being completely free and 7.0 being completely unfree). Also, the 'Democratic People's Republic of Korea', commonly known as North Korea, is rated the least democratic in the world, run by a dictator. A republic is a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote.

The Republic of the Congo (French: République du Congo), also known as Congo, Congo Republic,West Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville, is a country located in Central Africa. It is bordered by five countries: Gabon to the west; Cameroon to the northwest; the Central African Republic to the northeast; the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the east and south; and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda to the southwest.
The region was dominated by Bantu-speaking tribes, who built trade links leading into the Congo River basin. Congo-Brazzaville was formerly part of the French colony of Equatorial Africa. Upon independence in 1960, the former colony of French Congo became the Republic of the Congo. The People's Republic of the Congo was a Marxist–Leninist one-party state from 1970 to 1991. Multi-party elections have been held since 1992, although a democratically elected government was ousted in the 1997 Republic of the Congo Civil War and President Denis Sassou Nguesso has ruled for 26 of the past 36 years.

Natural Sound The capital of the Congo Republic is calm but tense after this week's civil war victory by General Sassou-Nguesso. But four months of blood-letting have left Brazzaville in ruins. Bodies are scattered throughout the streets. There is widespread looting. Many roadblocks are still in place and most shops remain closed. The civil war may be over in the Congo Republic, but a four-month civil war has left countless victims wounded and in anguish. In the hospitals of Kintele region, near Brazzaville, patients lie on the floor. The fortunate writhe around in bed, nursing their injuries. Kintele's hospital continues to treat 200 to 300 patients a day, victims of land mines, stray bullets and unexploded shells. There is no medicine and no bandages. The seriously injured are treated by amputation. The remainder are left to bury their dead. Funerals, like the one for this rebel fighter, are daily affairs. Rifle fire echoes throughout the streets as those in mourning express their anger and grief. Militia forces of civil war victor Denis Sassou-Nguesso are moving to re-establish order in the Congo Republic. But soon, some of the 800-thousand inhabitants estimated to have fled fighting in the capital, are expected to return. They arrived under the premise that Brazzavile Military hospital was the best equipped in the country after the depot explosions last week which left thousands maimed. But the tools are rusty, they don't have sterilisers and time is running out. This morning (Monday) the first surgery was delayed because the hospital didn't have sterile scalpel blades, the most essential surgical tool. They derive true joy from showing off their attire on the streets of Brazzaville – the country’s capital and the centre of the “La Sape” movement. Walking down dusty streets lined with clay houses, they turn heads and feel like kings. And there’s no price they won’t pay for this.
In fact, behind the image of success these dandies project, there are often stories of significant financial troubles caused by their extravagant hobby. To afford the price tag of their designer clothes, “sapeurs” have to save, borrow and even steal money, sometimes bringing ruin to their families. But even the grim consequences of their indulgent dressing habits often don’t stop “sapeurs” from spending money they don’t really have. They are in constant competition with each other and investing in their image is more important to them than improving their living conditions. Dressing smartly becomes a true addiction that is very hard to conquer.

South African orthopaedic surgeons are working like car mechanics in the Republic of Congo to get the job done.
They arrived under the premise that Brazzavile Military hospital was the best equipped in the country after the depot explosions last week which left thousands maimed. But the tools are rusty, they don't have sterilisers and time is running out.
This morning (Monday) the first surgery was delayed because the hospital didn't have sterile scalpel blades, the most essential surgical tool.
"We are working half speed compared to South African," said chief surgeon Johnny de Beer. "Poorly qualified nurses, having to improvise with tools and the language barrier is all slowing us down," he said.
The local translators, mostly English language school teachers, have been thrown in the deep end handling everything from body searches to operation dialogue between patients and surgeons. One passed out during an amputation yesterday (Sunday).
Amputations are vital on many patients' arms and legs as infections rapidly eat at their wounds, turning them septic yellow.
Trauma doctor Rosanne Symons explained "First they draw with a marker pen where to cut. Then they tear through the skin and muscle using a scalpel, tying up the veins and nerve endings as they go." Once surgeons reach the bone they use a saw built for cutting wood ,and an industrial drill, till the bone can be separated by hand.
"Many patients refuse amputations. They will die if we can't convince them that it is the only treatment option left," said de Beer.
"Septic wounds are our greatest challenge. When the blast happened the operations were done fast and in huge volumes. Now we must operate on those same patients again," he said. "There are 20 patients left at this hospital who require critical operations. Time is running out," said fellow surgeon Hannes Joubert.
General surgeon Zafar Khan isn't fazed by the blood and guts, munching on some biltong he brought from Durban as he overlooks the senior surgeons operating.
While there was little to be admired about the working conditions of the South African doctors, down the hallway a woman was screaming her lungs out. Without painkillers or sedatives, 6 men held down the woman while Congolese surgeons cleaned her wounds with a tweezers and a wet cloth. "Kill me please kill me," she begged in French.

The capital of the Congo Republic is calm but tense after this week's civil war victory by General Sassou-Nguesso.
But four months of blood-letting have left Brazzaville in ruins.
Bodies are scattered throughout the streets. There is widespread looting. Many roadblocks are still in place and most shops remain closed.
The civil war may be over in the Congo Republic, but a four-month civil war has left countless victims wounded and in anguish.
In the hospitals of Kintele region, near Brazzaville, patients lie on the floor. The fortunate writhe around in bed, nursing their injuries.
Kintele's hospital continues to treat 200 to 300 patients a day, victims of land mines, stray bullets and unexploded shells.
There is no medicine and no bandages. The seriously injured are treated by amputation.
The remainder are left to bury their dead. Funerals, like the one for this rebel fighter, are daily affairs.
Rifle fire echoes throughout the streets as those in mourning express their anger and grief.
Militia forces of civil war victor Denis Sassou-Nguesso are moving to re-establish order in the Congo Republic.
But soon, some of the 800-thousand inhabitants estimated to have fled fighting in the capital, are expected to return.

That’s triggered criticism from New Delhi, which refused Beijing’s invitation to join Belt and Road. It’s also added to growing rivalry between the Asian giants — relations between the two fast-growing economies remain marred by territorial disputes like the Doklam standoff in the Himalayas that ended last month.
To ensure China doesn’t eclipse India on its home turf, Prime Minister Narendra Modi should continue exporting low-cost technology and offering favorable development loans, panelists at WEF said.
India has emerged as a leader of low-cost tech in South and Southeast Asia. Its affordable generic pharmaceuticals are highly sought-after while the country is championing solar energy, reflected by the April launch of the International Solar Alliance — New Delhi’s brainchild aimed at boosting solar cooperation among member nations.
India is at an advantage in this arena because it shares similar challenges as other markets in the region, such as poverty and weather, said Suhasini Haidar, diplomatic editor of The Hindu newspaper. If New Delhi attempts to compete against China’s sizable war chest on the investment front, “we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment,” she said. “We need to play to our strengths.”
India also supports the economic development of South Asian peers through rupee-structured loans, which helps avoid problems of exchange rate and devaluation, pointed out Leela Ponappa, India’s former deputy national security advisor.

It’s also added to growing rivalry between the Asian giants — relations between the two fast-growing economies remain marred by territorial disputes like the Doklam standoff in the Himalayas that ended last month.
To ensure China doesn’t eclipse India on its home turf, Prime Minister Narendra Modi should continue exporting low-cost technology and offering favorable development loans, panelists at WEF said.
India has emerged as a leader of low-cost tech in South and Southeast Asia. Its affordable generic pharmaceuticals are highly sought-after while the country is championing solar energy, reflected by the April launch of the International Solar Alliance — New Delhi’s brainchild aimed at boosting solar cooperation among member nations.
India is at an advantage in this arena because it shares similar challenges as other markets in the region, such as poverty and weather, said Suhasini Haidar, diplomatic editor of The Hindu newspaper. If New Delhi attempts to compete against China’s sizable war chest on the investment front, “we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment,” she said. “We need to play to our strengths.”
India also supports the economic development of South Asian peers through rupee-structured loans, which helps avoid problems of exchange rate and devaluation, pointed out Leela Ponappa, India’s former deputy national security advisor.
“There’s no question of competing with China, why should we?” she said. Modi should simply focus on his country’s long track record of building human capacities in South Asia, she continued.

In fact, behind the image of success these dandies project, there are often stories of significant financial troubles caused by their extravagant hobby. To afford the price tag of their designer clothes, “sapeurs” have to save, borrow and even steal money, sometimes bringing ruin to their families. But even the grim consequences of their indulgent dressing habits often don’t stop “sapeurs” from spending money they don’t really have. They are in constant competition with each other and investing in their image is more important to them than improving their living conditions. Dressing smartly becomes a true addiction that is very hard to conquer.
However, some “sapeurs” do strive to find a balance between looking chic and being reasonable with their spending. They insist that the “La Sape” movement isn’t about designer suits but rather developing impeccable taste. They make an emphasis on learning to dress well but within one’s means. This way, style and elegance will demand fewer sacrifices from their devotees and will be accessible to more sophisticated men.

Hey everyone! In this video, Benedicte, Naivasha and I discuss challenging the common stereotypes Congolese women are portrayed as. We even came across a tweet on twitter where a Congolese individual felt embarrassed to say they were from Congo due to the way the country is mocked on social media.
We then go on to discuss another issue raised where an individual wrote a post about Congolese women being messed, and our response to that. To finalise, we talk about the Congolese women dating men from other countries and also the importance of uplifting Congolese men instead of tearing them down. We hope you enjoy!

It is one of the world's most fatal and rare diseases.
Its last outbreak in West Africa killed more than 11-thousand people.
Now, Ebola appears to be back.
But this time, heading east, to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Where health officials have confirmed the outbreak after taking samples from victims in a remote northern village.
They're also trying to track down 125 people who may have been exposed.
So, what can be done to contain this latest outbreak of Ebola?

Three veterans of the surviving 40 or so members of the 35th Battalion A Company, involved in the Siege of Jadotville in Katanga, Congo, in 1961, joined Comdt Quinlan's five children, grandchildren and former Taoiseach Enda Kenny for a ceremony with military honours in Waterville, Co Kerry ... His son, retired Comdt Leo Quinlan, was 16 when his father served in the Congo....
