Namibia (/nəˈmɪbiə/, /næˈ-/), officially the Republic of Namibia (German: Republik Namibia ; Afrikaans: Republiek van Namibië), and formerly German South-West Africa and then South West Africa, is a country in southern Africa whose western border is the Atlantic Ocean. It shares land borders with Zambia and Angola to the north, Botswana to the east and South Africa to the south and east. Although it does not border Zimbabwe, less than 200 metres of the Zambezi River (essentially a small bulge in Botswana to achieve a Botswana/Zambia micro-border) separates them at their closest points. It gained independence from South Africa on 21 March 1990, following the Namibian War of Independence. Its capital and largest city is Windhoek. Namibia is a member state of the United Nations (UN), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and the Commonwealth of Nations.
The dry lands of Namibia were inhabited since early times by San, Damara, and Namaqua, and since about the 14th century AD by immigrating Bantu who came with the Bantu expansion. Most of the territory became a German Imperial protectorate in 1884 and remained a German colony until the end of World War I. In 1920, the League of Nations mandated the country to South Africa, which imposed its laws and, from 1948, its apartheid policy. The port of Walvis Bay and the offshore Penguin Islands had been annexed by the Cape Colony under the British crown by 1878 and had become an integral part of the new Union of South Africa at its creation in 1910.

January 2004 The introduction of sweeping land reforms in Namibia is threatening the livelihoods of hundreds of white farmers. Emmanuel Ismael's home is a small farm in the heart of Duerreland, Namibia. Yet he fears that all might soon be lost in the face of President Sam Nujoma's land reclamation programme. With black farmers desperate for land, the Namibian government has adopted a strategy designed to win them votes -- evicting white farmers. 192 foreigners have already lost their farms. But European farmers are worried that only the politicians will profit from the changes. "They are not battling against poverty but are simply changing the colour of the skin of the owners." In fact, the first victims of the land expropriation will be the black workers. Farmers believe that foreign inv...

A small Business can be a success, a small business doesn't have to stay small. Africa like many places is full of small businesses and struggling entrepreneurs, from small shop owners to street vendors. Vusi challenges the African business community as a whole to help grow these entrepreneurs as most businesses need capital and other forms of support from the more well established businesses and for bankers to play their part. As a continent Africa can become an economic giant of the world. Known as a "Rock star of public speaking" Vusi is the only speaker globally to have been invited to the Dragon's Den as an investor. This is because he has built several businesses. Today, as Chairman of Watermark Afrika Fund he is spearheading a pan-African process of raising the largest Growth Fund ...

The Namibian Economy, Past, Present and Future’ Conference was hosted by the Economic Association of Namibia on 10 November 2016, at the Safari Hotel. It attracted economists, politicians and foreign investors far and wide... The Conference was meant to to review our current, tumultuous economic environment. Since the mid-term budget announcement, everyone has felt the pinch. Government tightened its coffers, tenders were frozen, food prices rose and workers were retrenched. With little change predicted on our medium term forecast for economic growth, investment will be the key driver to save our economy... from a plummeting currency and hyper- inflation. Since then, President Geingob has been travelling the world to meet with potential investors in places like Cuba, France and London. It ...

Namibia has always been seen as a younger sibling to South Africa. Even after independence in 1990 the country remained fairly anchored to South Africa in terms of monetary policy, imports and exports and Namibia maintained its strict regulatory policies, which is why its financial services sector has remained fairly insulated from the global financial crisis.

The International Monetary Fund has announced that Namibia's economic growth is likely to drop this year from 5.3 percent in 2015 to 2.5 percent. The figure contradicts with the 4.3 percent provided by Namibia's central bank before the start of the year. The IMF says this has been caused by slow budgetary consolidation efforts of authorities as well as a slow down in the buildings and public works sector. IMF officials equally cite the reduction in the prices of raw materials and the poor c… READ MORE : http://www.africanews.com/2016/09/22/namibia-s-economic-growth-likely-to-drop-this-year-imf Africanews is a new pan-African media pioneering multilingual and independent news telling expertise in Sub-Saharan Africa. French/Span/Nat Angolan troops were guarding the strategic Congolese port town of Matadi on Sunday after rebel forces trying to oust President Laurent Kabila deserted their positions. The Angolans took control of Matadi over the weekend after the rebels put up only light resistance before fleeing into the surrounding forest. The loss of Matadi, one of the last major rebel strongholds, is a blow to the insurgent force that just weeks ago seemed poised to take the capital, Kinshasa, about 350 kilometers to the northeast. This is the town of Matadi, just over 350 kilometers south-west of the Congolese capital Kinshasa. After a brief outburst of fighting on Sunday, it's now a government prize. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust. In June 1978 it was learnt that SWAPO was preparing to attack the military bases at Katima Mulilo, Wenela and M''pacha. To meet this attack two combat teams viz Alpha and Bravo were formed. The attack started on 23 August with a stand-off bombardment using 122 mm rockets on Katima Mulilo. One of these penetrated the roof of a barrack killing ten soldiers. After an artillery and mortar battle the two combat units crossed the border. Combat team Bravo's target was a SWAPO base camp approximately 30 km from the Zambian border but they found it deserted and returned to M''pacha without having accomplished this objective. Combat Unit Alpha managed to catch up with the rear guard of a number of fleeing terrorists but were enticed into an ambush. In the fighting which ensued five terrorists w...

This is a fascinating South African propaganda film about the "Bush War" in Angola and Namibia between the SA-trained and equipped Namibian army, the South African Defence Forces (SADF), the Angolan army, Cuba, UNITA, and SWAPO. TLD contains rare footage and is essential watching for scholars of the 1967-1989 South West African "Border War."
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has told a security conference in Germany that terrorist groups have trained in his country and that the African states need to be organized. President Mohamud admitted his country has been plagued by al-Shabab militants as well as corruption and political infighting and has only made limited progress in setting up a working political system. The presence of Boko Haram—the Takfiri terror group that has pledged allegiance to Daesh—adds a deadly dimension to an already alarming situation in Somalia. President Mohamud added, ‘The terrorists are so linked together, they are associated and so organized, (that) we the world we need to be so organized.’ But is this call for cooperation simply window dressing? Somalia has not had a functioning central admin...

When World War I broke out in 1914, the South African government chose to join the war on the side of the Allies. General Louis Botha, the then prime minister, faced widespread Afrikaner opposition to fighting alongside Great Britain so soon after the Second Boer War and had to put down a revolt by some of the more militant elements before he could send an expeditionary force of some 67,000 troops to invade German South-West Africa (now Namibia). The German troops stationed there eventually surrendered to the South African forces in July 1915. (In 1920 South Africa received a League of Nations mandate to govern the former German colony and to prepare it for independence within a few years.)

When people think of diamonds poverty is not usually the first think that comes to mind. The reality is diamonds are mined in some of the poorest countries on earth. One might think the answer would be simply stop buying diamonds from continents like Africa based on the injustices of the past (and unfortunately ongoing in Zimbabwe) but this would only make things worse for those struggling to survive. At Precious Earth we believe the answer is to responsibly harness the economical potential of traceable diamonds and empower the local people through jobs and education in the territories, like Namibia, where diamonds are mined. Namibia Diamonds are the only diamonds that feature the Team Namibia* logo and come with a validation certificate. This assures you that your diamond is a natural, et...

The implications this mine and future operations is explored from the perspective of the communities living nearby. A 500-year-old Portuguese ship filled with gold estimated to be worth $13,000,000 and other treasures was unearthed in the Namibian desert along Africa’s “Skeletal Coast.” Miners from De Beers discovered the wreckage of Bom Jesus, a ship traveling from Lisbon to India in 1533, in the pit of a drained lagoon in 2008. Once excavation of the site was complete minors discovered hundreds of gold coins. It is believed the ship went down due to a combination of excess cargo and bad weather. The ship will remain in the custody of Namibia as the Portuguese government generously waived their right to the wreckage. Namibia! A land of enchanting desert beauty. The country of Namibia has a population of 3 million people total and is primarily made up by desert, yet there is no end to the adventures to be had on this laid back, wondrous land. Here are my top 5 tips for traveling in Namibia! NOTE: I spent 5 days in the cities of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund on the Namibian coast, so these tips are centered around those particular destinations. 1) DO NOT WALK AROUND AT NIGHT! Although this is a good rule of thumb when traveling anywhere it is especially true in Namibia. I was personally made a target and was fortunate enough to be in a large enough group of people that thankfully I was not taken. Long story short a group of 5 girls and 1 guy and I were making our way to the ship (walking at night) when a ...

Travel video about destination Namib Naukluft in Namibia. The arid landscape of the Namib Naukluft Park in the heart of Namibia seems to be endless and it is the fourth largest nature reserve in the world. In the northern region, between the river valleys of the Swakop and Kuiseb, vast fields of scree cover the majority of this fifty thousand square kilometre conservation area. The remote world of stone and rock seems so strange and unreal that one of the valleys in this region is called Moon Valley.Further into the Namib Desert and the colours of the surrounding landscape grow more intense. It is as though both earth and sky are competing against each other to see who shines brightest. The majestic and world famous blazing red dunes of Sossusvlei tower more than three hundred metres over ...

South Africa is not only impressive due to its size but also due to its amazing variety of fascinating scenery. Its paradise-like flora and fauna plus its historic and famous landmarks are totally captivating. Johannesburg is a modern metropolis and with around a million and a half inhabitants is the capital of Gauteng Province and the largest city in South Africa. It was founded in 1886 when gold was first discovered at Witwater Beach. Although European influence is obvious in South Africa the first inhabitants of this fascinating country were of course the various indigenous people of Africa and the village of Lesedi around twenty five kilometres south of Johannesburg provides many insights into ancient Africa’s traditions and dances. Lesedi contains four tiny villages that are inhabi...
