☸ A short documentary film made by Charlie Chambers about the harbor pilots in Falmouth Cornwall. He´s always been interested in seeing the different ships coming and going and astonished by how little most people know about them, even though as an island nation we are dependant on shipping. This film is a little insight into what goes on just offshore 24hrs a day, 365 days a year.

Merchant navy
A merchant navy or merchant marine is the fleet of merchant vessels that are registered in a specific country. On merchant vessels, Seafarers of various ranks and sometimes members of maritime trade unions are required by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) to carry Merchant Mariner's Documents.
King George V bestowed the title of the "Merchant Navy" on the British merchant shipping fleets following their service in the First World War; since then a number of other nations have also adopted use of that title or the similar "Merchant Marine." The following is a partial list of the merchant navies or merchant marines of various countries. In many countries the fleet's proper name is simply the capitalized version of the common noun ("Merchant Navy").
British Merchant Navy
The British Merchant Navy comprises the British merchant ships that transport cargo and people during time of peace and war.
For much of its history, the merchant navy was the largest merchant fleet in the world, but with the decline of the British Empire in the mid-20th century it slipped down the rankings. In 1939, the merchant navy was the largest in the world with 33% of total tonnage. By 2012, the merchant navy—still remaining one of the largest in the world—held only 3% of total tonnage. As of the year ending 2012, British Merchant Marine interests consists of 1,504 ships of 100 GRT or over. This includes ships either UK directly owned, parent owned or managed by a British company. This amounts to: 59,413,000 GRT or alternatively 75,265,000 DWT. This is according to the annual maritime shipping statistics provided by the British government and the Department for Transport.

Nickel Creek (album)
Nickel Creek is an eponymous album by the acoustic/"newgrass" trio known as Nickel Creek. The group had released two albums prior to this, however their earlier albums are no longer in print, and the band redefined their style before the release of Nickel Creek. As a result, Nickel Creek is widely regarded as their debut album. It was released by Sugar Hill Records, and produced by country star Alison Krauss.

The album was originally released with a different cover photo which featured fourth band member Scott Thile. He was also mentioned more extensively in the album credits. Upon his departure from the band, the album was reprinted with a new photo which featured the remaining three members of the band, and Scott's credits were lessened slightly to simply indicate his performance on the individual songs.
Other than photography credit, the track listings, performances, and all other credits are identical on both releases.

Cargo ship
A cargo ship or freighter is any sort of ship or vessel that carries cargo, goods, and materials from one port to another. Thousands of cargo carriers ply the world's seas and oceans each year, handling the bulk of international trade. Cargo ships are usually specially designed for the task, often being equipped with cranes and other mechanisms to load and unload, and come in all sizes. Today, they are almost always built by welded steel, and with some exceptions generally have a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years before being scrapped.
Types
Cargo ships/freighters can be divided into five groups, according to the type of cargo they carry. These groups are:
General cargo vessels carry packaged items like chemicals, foods, furniture, machinery, motor- and military vehicles, footwear, garments, etc.
Tankers carry petroleum products or other liquid cargo.
Dry bulk carriers carry coal, grain, ore and other similar products in loose form.

The Dutch maritime cluster operates on every continent and is beyond doubt a world player. The maritime cluster consists of 12 sectors that are vital to the Netherlands, and are respected world-wide. These sectors are: ports, offshore, maritime suppliers, shipbuilding, ship operating, dredging, maritime services, maritime knowledge and education institutes, inland shipping, Royal Netherlands Navy, water sport industry and fisheries. The maritime cluster is of significant value to the Dutch economy and offers vast potential for developing new products for new markets and creating work opportunities. However, the prime position of the Dutch maritime cluster cannot be taken for granted. A shift in emphasis is occurring through the world. These changes call for flexibility and adaptability. This is why it’s so important for the Netherlands not only to retain – but to reinforce – the position of this cluster. The maritime strategy aims to secure an international sustainable leading maritime position for the Netherlands. Realizing this ambition requires strong collaboration between the government and parties in the maritime cluster. To achieve this, integral cooperation between the national government and the maritime cluster on a basis of a shared maritime strategy is essential. The policy agenda of the maritime strategy states the necessary measures for the realisation of the ambitions of the government-wide policy per policy area. -

The Dutch maritime cluster operates on every continent and is beyond doubt a world player. The maritime cluster consists of 12 sectors that are vital to the Netherlands, and are respected world-wide. These sectors are: ports, offshore, maritime suppliers, shipbuilding, ship operating, dredging, maritime services, maritime knowledge and education institutes, inland shipping, Royal Netherlands Navy, water sport industry and fisheries. The maritime cluster is of significant value to the Dutch economy and offers vast potential for developing new products for new markets and creating work opportunities.
However, the prime position of the Dutch maritime cluster cannot be taken for granted. A shift in emphasis is occurring through the world. These changes call for flexibility and adaptability. This is why it’s so important for the Netherlands not only to retain – but to reinforce – the position of this cluster.
The maritime strategy aims to secure an international sustainable leading maritime position for the Netherlands. Realizing this ambition requires strong collaboration between the government and parties in the maritime cluster. To achieve this, integral cooperation between the national government and the maritime cluster on a basis of a shared maritime strategy is essential. The policy agenda of the maritime strategy states the necessary measures for the realisation of the ambitions of the government-wide policy per policy area.

Les services secrets du monde entier craignent en effet que les navires deviennent des vecteurs du terrorisme. Depuis le 1er juillet 2004 une nouvelle réglementation, le code ISPS, a pour objet de prévenir les attaques mais aussi de préserver la chaîne de distribution mondiale par voie maritime. Dans les ports du littoral français et à bord des navires ce film de 26 minutes montre ce qui a changé dans l'activité maritime. Suite aux attentats du 11 septembre 2001 les ports sont devenus des lieux sous haute surveillance. Les services secrets du monde entier craignent en effet que les navires deviennent des vecteurs du terrorisme.
Depuis le 1er juillet 2004 une nouvelle réglementation, le code ISPS, a pour objet de prévenir les attaques mais aussi de préserver la chaîne de distribution mondiale par voie maritime.
Dans les ports du littoral français et à bord des navires ce film de 26 minutes montre ce qui a changé dans l'activité maritime. Il parle des contraintes mais aussi des résultats liés à l'application de ces nouvelles règles.

Depuis quelques années, le trafic des porte-containers et celui des navires de croisière y sont en nette hausse, au détriment des pétroliers.
