Charlemagne (/ˈʃɑːrlᵻmeɪn/; 2 April 742/747/748 – 28 January 814), also known as Charles the Great (Latin: Carolus or Karolus Magnus) or Charles I, was King of the Franks. He united most of Western Europe during the early Middle Ages and laid the foundations for modern France and Germany. He took the Frankish throne in 768 and became King of Italy from 774. From 800 he became the first Holy Roman Emperor — the first recognized emperor in Western Europe since the fall of the Western Roman Empire three centuries earlier. While Charlemagne already ruled his kingdom without the help of the Pope, recognition from the pontiff granted him divine legitimacy in the eyes of his contemporaries.
The expanded Frankish state Charlemagne founded was called the Carolingian Empire.
The oldest son of Pepin the Short and Bertrada of Laon, Charlemagne became king in 768 following the death of his father. He was initially co-ruler with his brother Carloman I. Carloman's sudden death in 771 under unexplained circumstances left Charlemagne as the undisputed ruler of the Frankish Kingdom. Charlemagne continued his father's policy towards the papacy and became its protector, removing the Lombards from power in northern Italy, and leading an incursion into Muslim Spain. He also campaigned against the Saxons to his east, Christianizing them upon penalty of death, leading to events such as the Massacre of Verden. Charlemagne reached the height of his power in 800 when he was crowned Emperor of the Romans by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day at Old St. Peter's Basilica.

Plot: The amazing times of King Charles the Great (Charlemagne) served as the base for a great number of popular legends on continental Europe. He lived in the 8th century CE and despite being a warrior who through a significant numbers of battles succeeded to unify for the first time in history a divided continent, he was also a man of culture and a great believer in the need to help the needy. People loved him and told innumerable stories not only about him, but also about his valiant knights and the beautiful ladies with whom they weaved love stories. Without any doubt, the most exciting of such stories remains the French "La Chanson de Roland" (The Song of Roland) and its Italian versions "Orlando Innamorato" and "Orlando Furioso". In a magnificent, dramatic way they follow the noble and fearless hero Orlando, Charlemagne's right hand, through his adventures filled with passion, devotion and search for the truth. Along him, joining him or opposing him ferociously, are other unforgettable characters such as the knight Rinaldo, the stunning Angelica, the opposing leaders Rodomonte and Gradasso, the unique female knight Bradamante, the wizard Atlantes and many others. "Love and Virtue" bases itself broadly on these legends, but takes the topic much further by developing a fascinating view on difficult life choices, the meaning of friendship and the anguish of true love. The superb historical background and the captivating personalities of the various heroes are employed to create an atmosphere of magic, extraordinary music, soul-moving drama and beauty that will certainly leave a powerful imprint on the viewer.

The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000 (HIST 210) In this lecture, Professor Freedman discusses the Carolingian dynasty from its origins through its culmination in the figure of Charlemagne. The Carolingians sought to overthrow the much weakened Merovingian dynasty by establishing their political legitimacy on three bases: war leadership, Christian rule, and the legacy of Rome. Charlemagne's grandfather Charles Martel won a major victory over the Muslims in 733 at the Battle of Poitiers. Charlemagne's father Pepin the Short allied the Carolingians with the papacy at a time when the latter was looking for a new protector. Charlemagne, crowned emperor in Rome by Pope Leo III in 800, made strides in reestablishing the Roman Empire; although, being centered in northern Europe, his was not an exact...

Get the new Crash Course World History Character poster here: http://store.dftba.com/products/crashcourse-characters-poster In which John Green teaches you about the Holy Roman Empire by teaching you about Charles V. Charles Hapsburg was the holy Roman Emperor, but he was also the King of Spain. And the King of Germany. And the King of Italy and the Lord of the Netherlands and Count Palatine of Burgundy. In short, Charles was runnin' thangs in much of the world during his reign. Charles ruled a lot of countries, and he was also known for encouraging intellectual discourse and he even spoke out against slavery, in a limited. So why did he consider himself a failure, and why did he break up the Empire when he abdicated in 1556? Mainly because the Holy Roman Empire didn't work very well. It ...

A great French-Italian-German-Luxembourg historical mini-series of 1993
As the Roman Empire draws to a close, from out the north a confederation of tribes band together under a powerful leader. These fierce marauders became known as the Franks. Even by Roman provincial standards, they are more ferocious warriors than most. In 354, wracked by civil war, the Roman northern frontier essentially collapses, and Gaul is inundated with a tide of savage invaders from Germany, led by Merovech (French Mérovée, German Merowech) c. ad 450, king of the Salian Franks from whom Frankish tradition held the Merovingian dynasty to have taken its name. He was the father of Childeric I (d. 481/482) and grandfather of Clovis I (c. 466--511). Nothing definite is known of Merovech's life, but an early myth made him the son of a sea god. He is mentioned in Gregory of Tours's ...
The 33rd Waffen Grenadier Division of the ϟϟ Charlemagne (1st French) and Charlemagne Regiment are collective names used for units of French volunteers in the Wehrmacht and later Waffen-SS during World War II. From estimates of 7,400 to 11,000 at its peak in 1944,the strength of the division fell to just sixty men in May 1945. They were arguably the last German unit to see action in a pitched battle during World War II, where they held central Berlin and the Führerbunker against the onslaught of Soviet infantry. Knowing that they would not survive should Germany be defeated, they were among the last to surrender in the brutal house-to-house and street-to-street fighting, during the final days of the Battle in Berlin. Its crest is a representation of the dual empire of Charlemagne, which...
Charlemagne was King (768-814) and emperor (800-814) of the Franks. He is seen as one of the greatest conquerors in history. He conquered the Lombard Kingdom, Saxony, Bavaria and the Spanish March. But his reign is also famous for a cultural florescence, the Carolingian Renaissance. On the height of his power he was crowned to emperor in Rome by the Pope.
