FIDEL provides a unique view of Cuba's controversial and most polarizing leader. In 1968, Fidel Castro took filmmaker and activist Saul Landau on a weeklong jeep ride through the eastern mountains. There, he plays baseball with a group of peasants, visits his pre-school and trades jokes with a 98-year old man. Fidel also listens to the people's concerns about food distribution, bad roads and transportation. Landau captures Cuba's revolutionary chief early in the morning in his tent. The camera zooms in on his dirty and delicate fingernails holding his trademark cigar while he tells a story of Sìmon Bolivar and offers tactical advice to guerrilla warriors throughout the Third World.The film contains rare and fascinating archive footage of the Bay of Pigs invasion and scenes of Che Guevara alongside interviews with political prisoners. Spectacular photography and editing with hot Cuban music provide the cinematic aesthetics that give this film beautiful form to accompany its exciting content.

Of Cuba, we often only show its capital city, Havana, or its folklore. As the country’s general elections are heating up, this film, in the shape of a road movie, will allow us to travel across the island. A journey made at a key moment, as the debate surrounding post-Castro Cuba is more prevalent than ever before; Raul Castro himself has declared, “The country must change to avoid sinking.” It has indeed been a year since Cubans started being able to work for their own bread. Another proof of the “revolution” prompted by Raul Castro, Fidel’s brother and heir to his throne, is enabling his fellow citizens to legally acquire and sell their homes or even their vehicles. What impact does that hold upon the daily lives of Cubans? From Santiago de Cuba, the nation’s second most important city and starting point to its “revolutionary pathway”, we’ll be meeting a hairdresser who has just began working independently, a state-employed single mother from a backwoods town in the mountains who is struggling to make ends meet, a former administration executive who left his job to try his hand at agriculture, and even a priest whose celebration of the Virgin Mary equals that of the nation’s flag. Our journey across the sugarcane fields towards the nation’s capital will help understand the inner workings of a worn-out socialist system desperately attempting to jam its unavoidable decline, at least economically, by visiting a factory that has long been shut down and whose reopening is awaited like the Messiah. Our narrative will also include striking videos recorded by dissidents as well as archival footage. Beyond the revolutionary fables, what of the school and health systems still considered brands of the regime? What are a 20-year-old’s dreams made up of in Cuba? From a former barracks converted into a school, to the hospitals’ interiors, the film demonstrates the gap between reality and bygone revolutionary fantasies. As we go through shops, marketplaces, we witness firsthand the Kafkaesque effects of the dual currency system the Cubans must deal with to satisfy their most basic needs. And all along our journey, as we also decipher what went on behind the scenes of the shoot, what with our local guide who was as much an assistant as he was a censor, we draw as close as possible to the complex reality of a political system clinging to its last breath… Our road movie broadens its reach through the interviews led by Daniel Leconte with important political figures, intellectuals such as the Eduardo Manet, or even the Cuban journalist Julio Cesar Galvez Rodriguez. It discusses the days leading up to the revolution, which many saw as the beginning of democracy in Cuba. Then it shows the consequences of Castro's actions after he won power, and the world's response to his communist regime. Historical Background: The Cuban Revolution (1953-1959) was an armed revolt conducted by Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement and its allies against the U.S.-backed authoritarian government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista. The revolution began in July 1953, and continued sporadically until the rebels finally ousted Batista on 1 January 1959, replacing his government with a revolutionary socialist state. The 26th of July Movement later reformed along communist lines, becoming the Communist Party in October 1965. The Cuban Revolution had powerful domestic and international repercussions. In particular, it reshaped Cuba's relationship with the United States. Efforts to improve diplomatic relations have gained momentum in recent years. In the immediate aftermath of the revolution, Castro's government began a program of nationalization and political consolidation that transformed Cuba's economy and civil society. The United States government initially reacted favorably to the Cuban revolution, seeing it as part of a movement to bring democracy to Latin America. Castro's legalization of the Communist party caused a deterioration in the relationship between the two countries. The promulgation of the Agrarian Reform Law, expropriating thousands of acres of farmland, further worsened relations. In February 1960, Castro signed a commercial agreement with Soviet Union. In March 1960, Eisenhower gave his approval to a CIA plan to arm and train a group of Cuban exiles to overthrow the Castro regime. The invasion (known as the Bay of Pigs Invasion) took place on April 14, 1961. About 1,400 Cuban exiles disembarked at the Bay of Pigs, but failed in their attempt to overthrow Castro. In January 1962, Cuba was suspended from the Organization of American States (OAS), and later the same year the OAS started to impose sanctions against Cuba of similar nature to the US sanctions. The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in October 1962. By 1963, Cuba was moving towards a full-fledged Communist system modeled on the Soviet Union. As the country’s general elections are heating up, this film, in the shape of a road movie, will allow us to travel across the island. A journey made at a key moment, as the debate surrounding post-Castro Cuba is more prevalent than ever before; Raul Castro himself has declared, “The country must change to avoid sinking.” It has indeed been a year since Cubans started being able to work for their own bread. Another proof of the “revolution” prompted by Raul Castro, Fidel’s brother and heir to his throne, is enabling his fellow citizens to legally acquire and sell their homes or even their vehicles. What impact does that hold upon the daily lives of Cubans? From Santiago de Cuba, the nation’s second most important city and starting point to its “revolutionary pathway”, we’ll be meeting a hairdresser who has just began working independently, a state-employed single mother from a backwoods town in the mountains who is struggling to make ends meet, a former administration executive who left his job to try his hand at agriculture, and even a priest whose celebration of the Virgin Mary equals that of the nation’s flag. Our journey across the sugarcane fields towards the nation’s capital will help understand the inner workings of a worn-out socialist system desperately attempting to jam its unavoidable decline, at least economically, by visiting a factory that has long been shut down and whose reopening is awaited like the Messiah. Our narrative will also include striking videos recorded by dissidents as well as archival footage. Beyond the revolutionary fables, what of the school and health systems still considered brands of the regime? What are a 20-year-old’s dreams made up of in Cuba? From a former barracks converted into a school, to the hospitals’ interiors, the film demonstrates the gap between reality and bygone revolutionary fantasies. As we go through shops, marketplaces, we witness firsthand the Kafkaesque effects of the dual currency system the Cubans must deal with to satisfy their most basic needs. And all along our journey, as we also decipher what went on behind the scenes of the shoot, what with our local guide who was as much an assistant as he was a censor, we draw as close as possible to the complex reality of a political system clinging to its last breath… Our road movie broadens its reach through the interviews led by Daniel Leconte with important political figures, intellectuals such as the Eduardo Manet, or even the Cuban journalist Julio Cesar Galvez Rodriguez.

This documentary film focuses on the revolution in Cuba on 1959 with the exile of Batista, a tyrant in the eyes of many Cubans. It discusses the days leading up to the revolution, which many saw as the beginning of democracy in Cuba. Then it shows the consequences of Castro's actions after he won power, and the world's response to his communist regime.
Historical Background:
The Cuban Revolution (1953-1959) was an armed revolt conducted by Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement and its allies against the U.S.-backed authoritarian government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista. The revolution began in July 1953, and continued sporadically until the rebels finally ousted Batista on 1 January 1959, replacing his government with a revolutionary socialist state. The 26th of July Movement later reformed along communist lines, becoming the Communist Party in October 1965.
The Cuban Revolution had powerful domestic and international repercussions. In particular, it reshaped Cuba's relationship with the United States. Efforts to improve diplomatic relations have gained momentum in recent years. In the immediate aftermath of the revolution, Castro's government began a program of nationalization and political consolidation that transformed Cuba's economy and civil society.
The United States government initially reacted favorably to the Cuban revolution, seeing it as part of a movement to bring democracy to Latin America. Castro's legalization of the Communist party caused a deterioration in the relationship between the two countries. The promulgation of the Agrarian Reform Law, expropriating thousands of acres of farmland, further worsened relations. In February 1960, Castro signed a commercial agreement with Soviet Union.
In March 1960, Eisenhower gave his approval to a CIA plan to arm and train a group of Cuban exiles to overthrow the Castro regime. The invasion (known as the Bay of Pigs Invasion) took place on April 14, 1961. About 1,400 Cuban exiles disembarked at the Bay of Pigs, but failed in their attempt to overthrow Castro.
In January 1962, Cuba was suspended from the Organization of American States (OAS), and later the same year the OAS started to impose sanctions against Cuba of similar nature to the US sanctions. The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in October 1962. By 1963, Cuba was moving towards a full-fledged Communist system modeled on the Soviet Union.

A successful actress, Lisa Howard broke into journalism in 1960, first in radio, where she aired the U.S.’s first major interview with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. By the following year, she had her own daily news show on ABC television—Purex Presents Lisa Howard and the News With the Woman's Touch.
“She was one of the pioneers of bringing about what’s happening now,” said Peter Kornbluh, a senior analyst at the National Security Archive in Washington, DC, an investigative research center that works to expand public access to government information and manages a huge archive of declassified documents. Kornbluh, who also directs the Archives’ Cuba Documentation Project, first wrote about secret negotiations between emissaries for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Fidel Castro for Cigar Aficionado, an exposé that was later adopted into a feature documentary film for the Discovery/Times Channel called Kennedy and Castro: The Secret History.
In his article, Kornbluh tells how in April of 1963, Howard was able to secure an exclusive interview with Fidel Castro for an ABC special. In both the interview and in private conversation with Howard, Castro made his interest in restoring diplomatic relations clear; these statements sparked a chain of secret communications between the two nations, instigated by Howard.
Perhaps the most stunning event to come about in the aftermath of these secret maneuverings was a meeting between William Attwood, a deputy to United Nations Ambassador Adlai Stevenson, and Cuban UN Ambassador Carlos Lechuga, which took place at Howard's Manhattan apartment on September 23, 1963 under the guise of a party.
“She used her Upper East Side apartment as a place for secret communications,” says Kornbluh, “and with great chutzpah engineered the first meeting between Cuba’s ambassador to the UN and the American ambassador to the UN in a gesture of cocktail diplomacy. That was the first conversation. You could date the secret talks back to September of 1963.”
In fact, Howard’s home was used as a base for ongoing secret communications, according to Kornbluh, until the day the President was shot in Dallas just two months later.
“Lisa Howard was not only this pioneer in journalism,” said Kornbluh, but also “with great tenacity and courage, she used her extraordinary access to these figures to try to bring the U.S. and Cuba together, carrying back messages from Castro to the Kennedy White House. She was a woman ahead of her time.”
But ultimately, it was her political maneuverings and outspokenness that led to her downfall as a credible broadcast journalist.
Howard returned to Cuba in February of 1964 for another ABC interview with Castro, but the new president, Lyndon Johnson, was less amenable to normalizing relations with Cuba than his predecessor had been. And yet, Howard persisted with her negotiations.
In fact, among the documents uncovered by Kornbluh is a July 7, 1964 memorandum in which Gordon Chase, assistant to national security advisor McGeorge Bundy, reports his concerns that Howard's role as an intermediary had now escalated and that administration officials should try to “remove [her] from direct participation in the business of passing messages.”
“Howard wasn’t voicing these views on her news hour,” said Kornbluh, “but she had a life outside of her job, and part of it was political activism. She was quite opinionated, quite forceful.”
In the fall of 1964, Howard openly campaigned against Robert Kennedy’s campaign for U.S. Senator from New York. ABC warned her that her partisan politics would lead to dismissal. Howard continued anyway. “So they fired her,” says Kornbluh, “and cancelled her show.”
Depressed by the loss of her career and a subsequent miscarriage in 1965, Howard committed suicide during a 4th of July vacation in the Hamptons with her family by overdosing on barbiturates. The National Security Archive has documented her role in secret diplomacy with Cuba in a new book, Back Channel to Cuba.

Fidel Castro, 76 at the time of this interview, has outlasted nine US presidents. He's on his tenth. His rule continues to inspire both fear and devotion. He tells Barbara Walters that Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev lied to both President John F. Kennedy and Cuba, heightening the Cuban Missile Crisis.
