The Red Fort was the residence of the Mughal emperor of India for nearly 200 years, until 1857. It is located in the center of Delhi and houses a number of museums. In addition to accommodating the emperors and their households, it was the ceremonial and political centre of Mughal government and the setting for events critically impacting the region. Constructed in 1648 by the fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as the palace of his fortified capital Shahjahanabad, the Red Fort is named for its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone and is adjacent to the older Salimgarh Fort, built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546. The imperial apartments consist of a row of pavilions, connected by a water channel known as the Stream of Paradise (Nahr-i-Behisht). The fort complex is considered to represent the zenith of Mughal creativity under Shah Jahan and although the palace was planned according to Islamic prototypes, each pavilion contains architectural elements typical of Mughal buildings that reflect a fusion of Timurid and Persian traditions. The Red Fort’s innovative architectural style, including its garden design, influenced later buildings and gardens in Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Kashmir, Braj, Rohilkhand and elsewhere.[1] With the Salimgarh Fort, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 as part of the Red Fort Complex. On Independence Day (15 August), the Prime Minister of India hoists the 'tricolor' national flag at the main gate of the fort and delivers a nationally-broadcast speech from its ramparts.

Time to time museum collaborates with the cultural organizations of India and outside India to hold national and international exhibitions, workshops and seminars.
Visitors with Special Needs-
The National Museum welcomes all visitors with special needs for whom visits can be organised with prior arrangement. Emails may be sent requesting assistance for visits at least 48hours before the proposed visit to rige.shiba6@gmail.com.
Wheel chairs which may be obtained at the reception on demand. It is encouraged that prior booking may be done for a comfortable and enjoyable visit. The museum is upgrading its facilities for better access and remains committed to all visitors who wish to visit.
Training opportunities to the museum personnel, permission to photograph the objects for reproduction and publication and access to the reserve collection and Library are provided to the museum professionals, scholars and the general public. Photographs of art objects are also made available to general public on payment. Advice on identification of art objects owned by individual and institutions is offered by experts with prior appointment. Free guided tours to the galleries and film shows in the auditorium are arranged everyday.

The Adult Ticket costs Rs. 20/-
Foreigners Ticket costs Rs. 650/- (including Audio Guide).
For Students Students up to class 12th have free entry ticket (with I-cards).

New Delhi (
i/ˌnjuː ˈdɛli/) is a municipality and district in Delhi which serves as the capital and seat of government of India. In addition, it also serves as the seat of Government of Delhi.
The foundation stone of the city was laid by George V, Emperor of India during the Delhi Durbar of 1911. It was designed by British architects, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. The new capital was inaugurated on 13 February 1931, by India's Viceroy Lord Irwin.
Although colloquially Delhi and New Delhi as names are used interchangeably to refer to the jurisdiction of NCT of Delhi, these are two distinct entities, and the latter is a small part of the former.
New Delhi has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.
Establishment
Calcutta (now Kolkata) was the capital of India during the British Raj until December 1911. However, Delhi had served as the political and financial centre of several empires of ancient India and the Delhi Sultanate, most notably of the Mughal Empire from 1649 to 1857. During the early 1900s, a proposal was made to the British administration to shift the capital of the British Indian Empire (as it was officially called) from Calcutta to Delhi. Unlike Calcutta, which was located on the eastern coast of India, Delhi was at the center of northern India and the Government of British India felt that it would be logistically easier to administer India from the latter rather than the former.

Delhi (/ˈdɛli/, Hindustani pronunciation: [d̪ɪlliː] Dilli), officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, is the capital territory of India. Delhi is historically and culturally connected to both the Upper Doab of the Yamuna-Ganges river system and the Punjab region. National Rail Museum, New Delhi
The National Rail Museum is a museum in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi which focuses on the rail heritage of India it opened on the 1 February 1977. It is located in over 10 acres (40,000 m2) of land with both indoor and outdoor exhibits. A toy train offers rides around that site on regular days.Museum remains open from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm (Last entry 4.30 pm) Tuesday to Sunday. Museum remains closed on every Monday and National Holidays. The Indoor Gallery is now fully renovated and opened to the public.
A number of attractions has been added to enhance the visit
1) 1:8 scale toy train: - Runs on Wednesday and Friday only between 14:00 to 15:00 Hrs. Ticket charges Rs 100 per person per ride.
2) Diesel Simulator : - Runs on Tuesday only between 11:30 to 13:30 Hrs. Ticket charges Rs 150 per person per ride.
3) Steam Simulator : - Runs on Thursday only between 11:30 to 13:30 Hrs. Ticket charges Rs 100 per person per ride.
4) Coach Simulator : - Runs on Saturday and Sunday only between 11:30 to 13:30 Hrs. Ticket charges Rs 200 per person per ride.

The National Museum, New Delhi, as we see it today, has an interesting beginning. The blueprint for establishing the National Museum in Delhi was prepared by the Maurice Gwyer Committee in May 1946. An Exhibition of Indian Art, consisting of selected artefacts from various museums of India was organized by the Royal Academy, London with the cooperation of Government of India and Britain. The Exhibition went on display in the galleries of Burlington House, London during the winter months of 1947-48. It was decided to display the same collection in Delhi, before the return of exhibits to their respective museums. An exhibition was organized in the the RashtrapatiBhawan (President’s residence), New Delhi in 1949, which turned out to be a great success. This event proved responsible for the creation of the National Museum. The success of this Exhibition led to the idea that advantage should be taken of this magnificent collection to build up the nucleus collection of the National Museum. State Governments, Museum authorities and private donors, who had participated in the exhibition, were approached for the gift or loan of artefacts, and most of them responded generously. (Click here to see the gifts from various donors to the National Museum). On August 15, 1949, the National Museum, New Delhi, was inaugurated in the Rashtrapati Bhawan by Shri R.C. Rajagopalachari, the Governor-General of India. The foundation of the present building was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India, on May 12, 1955. The first phase of the National Museumbuilding was formally inaugurated by Dr. SarvepalliRadhakrishnan, the Vice President of India, on December 18, 1960. The second phase of the building was completed in 1989. While the Museum continued to grow its collection through gifts that were sought painstakingly, artefacts were collected through its Arts Purchase Committee. The Museum presently holds approximately 2,00,000 objects of a diverse nature, both Indian as well as foreign, and its holdings cover a time span of more than five thousand years of Indian cultural heritage. The National Museum was initially looked after by the Director General of Archaeology until 1957, when the Ministry of Education, Government of India, declared it a separate institution and placed it under its own direct control. At present, the National Museum is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. -

MAIN EXHIBITS Patiala State Monorail Trainways: This unique steam monorail was built in 1907. This unusual train is based on the "Ewing System", and connected Bassi with Sirhind (approximate 6 miles). This was designed by Col. Bowles. Fire Engine: Morris Fire Engine was built by the famous fire engineers M/s. John Morris and Sons Ltd of Salford, Lancashire in 1914. Only two Morris-Belsize fire-engine are known to exist in world today. Apart from the one with National Rail Museum, New Delhi, a 1912 model is preserved by the Enfield and District Veteran Vehicle. The fire engine preserved at the Enfield and District Veteran Vehicle, Whitewebbs Museum of Transport, Clay Hill, London, has been converted to use pneumatic tyres by Dennis Bros. Thus, the fire engine at National Rail Museum is the only one left in the world running on solid rubber tyres. Saloon of Prince of Wales: this saloon was built for Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) for his visit to India. Saloon of Maharaja of Indore: This is saloon of Holkar Maharaja of Indore. Saloon of Maharaja of Mysore: This is personal saloon of Maharaja of Mysore. The saloon is designed using teak, gold, ivory, etc. Electric Locomotive Sir Leslie Wilson: This WCG-1 locomotive belonged to the Great Indian Peninsular Railway (presently Central Railway). It is one of India's first generation electric locomotives. Railway employees fondly remember this locomotives as "khekdas" (crabs) since they make a curious moaning sound when at rest and while on the run an unusual swishing sound from the link motion can be heard. Its unusual features included an articulated body, which made them ideal for use in heavily curved ghat sections. They were in operation as shunting locomotives until 1994 at Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Electric Locomotive Sir Roger Lumley: This WCP-1 engine has wheel arrangements which are not seen these days. The locos were supplied from the Vulcan Foundry, UK in 1930. It was an electric locomotive which operated under 1500 Volts Direct Traction. It is famous for hauling the Mumbai—Pune Deccan Queen Express in the early years when it was launched. A prototype of this locomotive has been placed at the Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai for public viewing. Just next to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, is located the Indian Air Force Museum, Palam. It is best reached by taxi. There is a parking lot just next to the entrance so the driver can wait here. A nice and polite Sikh guard with a rifle was posted at the entry. The staff is very nice and likes to talk about airplanes. There is a small souvenir shop where you can buy a few items at almost no cost. The museum contains quite a few things of interest and it covers the story from the colonial days, the second world war to the birth of the India Air Forces and the space age and modern times. The exhibition is quite large but somewhat worn down. It contains some rare and special items such as a Japanese suicide rocket plane ("Ohka"). There is also a B-24 on display, a Spitfire and a Hurricane and other propeller driven airplanes, along with the many special modern types from Russia and France. They even have some quite big transport planes. Many exhibitions are dedicated to the wars with Pakistan with a number of war trophies proudly presented. A small special exhibition was dedicated the finding (US/India team) of a downed WWII B-24 in 2008. According to rumors the museum is to move to another, larger and better location (just next to the current one) within a few years. Allegedly they also poses a C-47 that will join the display. Very few locals and tourist know about this museum. I have been there two times and the first time ('07) I had everything to myself. Remember to bring the address or a map. Almost no taxi driver knows it's location - ask the hotel to explain the driver. -

Museum in Red Fort Delhi
The Red Fort was the residence of the Mughal emperor of India for nearly 200 years, until 1857. It is located in the center of Delhi and houses a number of museums. In addition to accommodating the emperors and their households, it was the ceremonial and political centre of Mughal government and the setting for events critically impacting the region. Constructed in 1648 by the fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as the palace of his fortified capital Shahjahanabad, the Red Fort is named for its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone and is adjacent to the older Salimgarh Fort, built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546. The National Museum, New Delhi, as we see it today, has an interesting beginning. The blueprint for establishing the National Museum in Delhi was prepared by the Maurice Gwyer Committee in May 1946. An Exhibition of Indian Art, consisting of selected artefacts from various museums of India was organized by the Royal Academy, London with the cooperation of Government of India and Britain. The Exhibition went on display in the galleries of Burlington House, London during the winter months of 1947-48. It was decided to display the same collection in Delhi, before the return of exhibits to their respective museums. An exhibition was organized in the the RashtrapatiBhawan (President’s residence), New Delhi in 1949, which turned out to be a great success. This event proved responsible for the creation of the National Museum.
The success of this Exhibition led to the idea that advantage should be taken of this magnificent collection to build up the nucleus collection of the National Museum. State Governments, Museum authorities and private donors, who had participated in the exhibition, were approached for the gift or loan of artefacts, and most of them responded generously.

On August 15, 1949, the National Museum, New Delhi, was inaugurated in the Rashtrapati Bhawan by Shri R.C. Rajagopalachari, the Governor-General of India. The foundation of the present building was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India, on May 12, 1955. The first phase of the National Museumbuilding was formally inaugurated by Dr. SarvepalliRadhakrishnan, the Vice President of India, on December 18, 1960. The second phase of the building was completed in 1989.
While the Museum continued to grow its collection through gifts that were sought painstakingly, artefacts were collected through its Arts Purchase Committee. The Museum presently holds approximately 2,00,000 objects of a diverse nature, both Indian as well as foreign, and its holdings cover a time span of more than five thousand years of Indian cultural heritage.
The National Museum was initially looked after by the Director General of Archaeology until 1957, when the Ministry of Education, Government of India, declared it a separate institution and placed it under its own direct control. At present, the National Museum is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

The National Rail Museum is a museum in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi which focuses on the rail heritage of India it opened on the 1 February 1977. It is located in over 10 acres (40,000 m2) of land with both indoor and outdoor exhibits. A toy train offers rides around that site on regular days.
MAIN EXHIBITS
Patiala State Monorail Trainways: This unique steam monorail was built in 1907. This unusual train is based on the "Ewing System", and connected Bassi with Sirhind (approximate 6 miles). This was designed by Col. Bowles.
Fire Engine: Morris Fire Engine was built by the famous fire engineers M/s. John Morris and Sons Ltd of Salford, Lancashire in 1914. Only two Morris-Belsize fire-engine are known to exist in world today. Apart from the one with National Rail Museum, New Delhi, a 1912 model is preserved by the Enfield and District Veteran Vehicle. The fire engine preserved at the Enfield and District Veteran Vehicle, Whitewebbs Museum of Transport, Clay Hill, London, has been converted to use pneumatic tyres by Dennis Bros. Thus, the fire engine at National Rail Museum is the only one left in the world running on solid rubber tyres.
Saloon of Prince of Wales: this saloon was built for Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) for his visit to India.
Saloon of Maharaja of Indore: This is saloon of Holkar Maharaja of Indore.
Saloon of Maharaja of Mysore: This is personal saloon of Maharaja of Mysore. The saloon is designed using teak, gold, ivory, etc.
Electric Locomotive Sir Leslie Wilson: This WCG-1 locomotive belonged to the Great Indian Peninsular Railway (presently Central Railway). It is one of India's first generation electric locomotives. Railway employees fondly remember this locomotives as "khekdas" (crabs) since they make a curious moaning sound when at rest and while on the run an unusual swishing sound from the link motion can be heard. Its unusual features included an articulated body, which made them ideal for use in heavily curved ghat sections. They were in operation as shunting locomotives until 1994 at Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
Electric Locomotive Sir Roger Lumley: This WCP-1 engine has wheel arrangements which are not seen these days. The locos were supplied from the Vulcan Foundry, UK in 1930. It was an electric locomotive which operated under 1500 Volts Direct Traction. It is famous for hauling the Mumbai—Pune Deccan Queen Express in the early years when it was launched. A prototype of this locomotive has been placed at the Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai for public viewing.

Just next to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, is located the Indian Air Force Museum, Palam. It is best reached by taxi. There is a parking lot just next to the entrance so the driver can wait here. A nice and polite Sikh guard with a rifle was posted at the entry. The staff is very nice and likes to talk about airplanes. There is a small souvenir shop where you can buy a few items at almost no cost.
The museum contains quite a few things of interest and it covers the story from the colonial days, the second world war to the birth of the India Air Forces and the space age and modern times.
The exhibition is quite large but somewhat worn down. It contains some rare and special items such as a Japanese suicide rocket plane ("Ohka"). There is also a B-24 on display, a Spitfire and a Hurricane and other propeller driven airplanes, along with the many special modern types from Russia and France. They even have some quite big transport planes.
Many exhibitions are dedicated to the wars with Pakistan with a number of war trophies proudly presented. A small special exhibition was dedicated the finding (US/India team) of a downed WWII B-24 in 2008.
According to rumors the museum is to move to another, larger and better location (just next to the current one) within a few years. Allegedly they also poses a C-47 that will join the display.
Very few locals and tourist know about this museum. I have been there two times and the first time ('07) I had everything to myself. Remember to bring the address or a map. Almost no taxi driver knows it's location - ask the hotel to explain the driver.

February 13, 2015 www.instagram.com/timandglo And so our 12-day adventure in India begins! We took an Air India red-eye flight direct from Shanghai to New Delhi. Our flight was a little delayed, so we only arrived in New Delhi at 3:00 am. We used the prepaid car service inside the arrivals terminal for transportation from the airport to our hotel. This was a mistake! We were charged 1,500 rupees only to find out that we could have used the prepaid taxi service just outside the terminal for 500 rupees. Something to remember for next time! :) We stayed at the New Delhi Railway branch of the Ginger Hotel chain. It's located just 200 meters from the Ajmeri Gate side of the train station, which is convenient for early departures or late arrivals. The hotel is affordable and clean, although t...

India has a unique allure, I have forever wanted to travel here. In 2008, I set my mind firmly on the goal of getting here, when we purchased 10 year multiple entry visas. Delhi, India, (नई दिल्ली) is the national capital of the country and has a metropolitan population of around 22 million residents. The city is ancient, it's been around since the 6th century BC so there are many historical and cultural places to visit. That's specifically why I created this list of 21 things to do in Delhi, to help you plan and get excited about visiting Delhi, India.
1. The Lotus Temple (Bahá'í House of Worship) - The temple is in the shape of a giant lotus and on the inside is a peaceful sanctuary where you can enter and sit in silence for as long as you like.
2. ISKCON Hare Krishna Temple - I had never seen a temple like this before, so it as an interesting experience to hear the music and walk around the interior of the temple.
3. Kalkaji Mandir Hindu Temple - This temple is a very important Hindu temple in Delhi and while I was there, there were a number of babies being dedicated by being decorated and blessed.
4. Jama Masjid - Located in Old Delhi, Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in all of Delhi. Though they will attempt to get money from you, it's free to enter the mosque, but if you want to take photos inside they will charge you 300 rupees.
5. Akshardham Temple - This modern Hindu temple located on the outskirts of Delhi literally made my jaw drop, it's that amazing. It's free to enter, but unfortunately, they don't allow any photography inside. This is one of the things to do in Delhi that you cannot afford to miss!
6. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib (Sikh Temple) - Unlike some other sites in Delhi where you'll find many touts and hustlers, the Gurdwara Sikh Temple is about the nicest and most friendly place you can go in Delhi. People are extremely nice and you can enter the temple to listen to music.
7. Laxmi Narayan Mandir -- Dedicated by Mahatma Gandhi, this is one of the most significant Hindu temples in Delhi.
8. Hauz Khas Complex - I'm always amazed at the history of Delhi and Hauz Khas is an excellent example of ancient monuments in the middle of a public park.
9. Lodi Gardens - As a free entrance public park, visiting the Lodi Gardens is one of the most amazing things to do in Delhi. It's just like an ordinary park, but it's filled with thousand year old tombs and monuments that are truly inspirational.
10. India Gate - The war memorial is one of the landmarks of Delhi and resembles the famous Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
11. Jantar Mantar - The Jantar Mantar complex is a compound that houses 13 different astronomy instruments. The structures are confusing to look at, but if you read or follow a guide (or audio guide) you'll understand how each instrument functioned.
12. Qutub Minar - Just like Akshardham Temple, Qutub Minar is one of the top things to do in Delhi, it's truly remarkable. The minaret is the main attraction, a huge pillar of red carved sandstone that towers above the ancient ruins in the complex.
13. Humayun's Tomb - One of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Delhi is Humayun's Tomb, built in Mughal Islamic architecture.
14. Tomb of Safdarjung - Very similar to Humayun's tomb is the tomb of Safdarjung. What I really liked is that there were no other tourists the day I went so it was quite and peaceful.
15. Red Fort - Located near Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi is the Red Fort. It's an entire walled in city where you can walk around the browse the many buildings within the walls.
16. Raj Ghat - The Raj Ghat is a memorial park dedicated to Gandhi.
17. Chandni Chowk & Chawri Bazar - The liveliest and busiest area of Delhi is Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazar. I think it's possible to purchase anything from the entire world in this area, and you'll also find lots of delicious food.
18. Dilli Haat - This handicraft village was set up by the Delhi tourism authority and it's a decent place to purchase souvenirs or high quality crafts. You'll also find a food court that contains canteens serving food from all over India.
19. Connaught Place (Rajiv Chowk) - Known for short as just CP is a huge series of roundabouts and is the central modern business district of Delhi. Within the area you'll find all sorts of shops, famous restaurants and the Palika Bazar, an underground shopping center.
20. Paharganj (Main Bazar) - The main bazar is located just west of the New Delhi railroad station and it's an old area of town where you'll find a market and lots of budget accommodation options.
21. Delhi Street Food - Eating street food is one of the best things to do in Delhi, you'll love it.

The National Rail Museum contains an interesting collection of nostalgic locomotives, carriages and memorabilia and for those who do not wish to risk a journey on India’s present day over-packed trains, the museum provides the perfect opportunity to imagine how it must have been on the Indian railroads of old. The Safdar-Jang Mausoleum was built in the final years of Mogul rule and is an architectural monument of this golden era. It contains each design element of this epoch, with a terrace-like substructure, painted stucco and a dome. No other city in this huge and diverse country demonstrates the dramatic history of India with all the intensity of colour as Delhi.

The National Rail Museum contains an interesting collection of nostalgic locomotives, carriages and memorabilia and for those who do not wish to risk a journey on India’s present day over-packed trains, the museum provides the perfect opportunity to imagine how it must have been on the Indian railroads of old. The Safdar-Jang Mausoleum was built in the final years of Mogul rule and is an architectural monument of this golden era. It contains each design element of this epoch, with a terrace-like substructure, painted stucco and a dome. No other city in this huge and diverse country demonstrates the dramatic history of India with all the intensity of colour as Delhi.

Red Fort
The Red Fort (Lal Qila) is one of Delhi's top tourist sights. A brilliant red sandstone fort built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (who also built Agra's Taj Mahal) as his ruling palace. Completed in 1648, the years since have not treated the buildings kindly: the rooms have long since been stripped of all objects, the marble inlays are long gone and quite a few buildings are off limits. Still, the scale remains imposing and the gardens are kept lush and green even in midwinter. Major buildings within include:
Chatta Chowk, (Covered Bazaar). True to the name, this is a covered bazaar between the gate and the fort itself, now filled with souvenir hawkers.
Diwan-i-Am, (Hall of Public Audience). This building separates the outer court from the inner court, and has a marble platform for the emperor's throne.
Hayat Baksh Bagh, (Life-Bestowing Gardens). Once a grand garden of full of fountains and streams, now sadly all dry — only dry channels and acres of green grass remain.
Diwan-i-Khas, (Hall of Private Audience). Built completely of marble, this is where the emperor received special visitors.
Khas Mahal, (Private Palace), The Emperor's main residence. The octagonal Mussaman Burj tower looks out toward the Yamuna River, and is where the Emperor used to appear before the public for each morning.
Rang Mahal, (Colour Palace). The residence of the Sultan's main wife.
Mumtaz Mahal, (Jewel Palace). Contained six apartments for the Sultan's harem. Now used as a museum of court textiles, carpets, weapons, etc (free).
Daawat Khana, A minor palace at the northmost end of the Fort, this was originally the residence of a prince, but it was converted into a tea house by the British, a function it continues today. Basic meals go for around 60 rupees, drinks 10-20 rupees, and it also has the cleanest toilets around.
Swatantra Sangrama Sangrahalaya, (Museum of the Independence Movement). To the left after the Chatta Chowk, this is a reasonably well-presented museum on the history of independence activism in India, starting from the Mutiny of 1857 all the way to Gandhi.
The only open entrance is Lahore Gate, on the west side. Security in and around the Fort is very heavy, as it was the scene of a terrorist attack in 2000 that killed three people. Bags are allowed, but they'll be X-rayed and you'll be patted down. Tickets cost Rs 10/250 rupees for Indians/foreigners, photography free, video cameras Rs 25 extra. Open sunrise to sunset daily except Monday. Allow for 3-4 hr in your schedule in case of long weekends and national holidays as lot of tourists flock around then. The most scenic way of reaching the fort is to take the Metro to Chawri Bazaar and then a cycle-rickshaw through the incredibly packed bazaar to the Fort (price negotiable, aim for Rs 20).
The fort has a light and sound show (Rs 50) in the evenings from 7:30PM-9PM, depending on the season.
Be careful buying tickets at the booth, as the ticket sellers will attempt to shortchange you. Try to have a small bill. Due to enhanced security the parking can be a bit tricky as the walk from the now distanced away parking at nearby alternative slots is quite a bit. The congested traffic makes crossing the road even trickier.

Humayun's Tomb in south Delhi, near Hazrat Nizamuddin station, is one of Delhi's three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Open daily from sunrise to sunset, entry is Rs 10/250, Indians/foreigners.
Qutub Minar, The most famous structure on grounds, this 72.5 m minaret was the tallest "skyscraper" in the world when built (1193-1368) - it was constructed on the orders of Qutb-ud-din Aybak. Delicately carved, it has been astonishingly well-preserved and is still an awe-inspiring sight today. It's often visible from air when flying into IGI airport! (Sticklers for archaeological truth will, however, note that the top of the tower has twice been rebuilt after an earthquake, and the base has been restored more recently.) While entry into the tower itself is no longer permitted, for Rs 10 per 5 min you can view the scenery via a little webcam on top.
Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, Delhi's first and grandest mosque, now mostly in ruins, but many parts of the complex are still standing and the sandstone decorations are still impressive. Check out the extraordinarily ornate carvings near the tomb of Iltutmish on the west side of the complex.

Delhi City Guide | India Travel Video Transcript:
Well good morning from Delhi. It is our first day of sightseeing. Sam's parents arrived last night. Yeah. We've got the full group for travels. The squad is ready. We're going to be doing. We're going to be in Delhi for a couple of days.
Yeah, just a that is how we're kicking things off. And yeah we just started by walking around today. We're visiting the Red Fort (लाल क़िला - لال قلعہ) right now.
All over India. Yeah, so right now we're visiting the Red Fort (लाल क़िला - لال قلعہ) and honestly this is probably going to be a bit of a different format because we obviously want to spend time with Sam's parents. I don't think we're going to be filming as much but we're going to show you some of the highlights and kind of see how it works out. So let's go tour Delhi now.
After wandering around the Red Fort for an hour or so, it was time for a little break, so we decided to introduce my parents to their first cup of masala chai in India.
From there we went on a short tour of Old Delhi during rush hour, which in retrospect may not have been the best idea. It was a little too crowded to walk, so we popped into a restaurant for lunch instead.
After visiting Humayun’s Tomb, we took two cycle rickshaws over to the Lodi Gardens. It was getting close to lunch hour, so first we stopped at “Lodi - The Garden Restaurant” where we had a really nice meal in an outdoor setting. From there we were just a few steps away from the actual gardens, which proved to be a popular spot on the weekend.
The Gardens are named after the Lodhi Dynasty, who ruled parts of northern India from the mid 15th century to the early 16th century, before the rise of the Mughal Empire. The gardens contain various tombs and mosques, and it’s a very tranquil setting in what can otherwise be a very chaotic city.
Like most structures in Old Delhi, Jama Masjid is made of red sandstone and white marble, and it also happens to be one of the largest mosques in all of India.
So we're at the train station here in Delhi (दिल्ली ਿਦੱਲੀ) and that means we are wrapping up the trip here. What an adventure. So yeah that is it for our time in Delhi. That was an assault on the senses. Oh yes. Delhi is a very chaotic but yet exciting city and there is a lot to do but it is the kind of place where once you've seen a few attractions and you're ready to move on yeah. Yeah, it is time to move on. And we are moving on. Where are we off to next? We're off to Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. So this is somewhere I've been before. I'm so excited to be going there. So stay tuned for those adventures. We've got a lot more destinations in India to come. Bye!

And so our 12-day adventure in India begins! We took an Air India red-eye flight direct from Shanghai to New Delhi. Our flight was a little delayed, so we only arrived in New Delhi at 3:00 am. We used the prepaid car service inside the arrivals terminal for transportation from the airport to our hotel. This was a mistake! We were charged 1,500 rupees only to find out that we could have used the prepaid taxi service just outside the terminal for 500 rupees. Something to remember for next time! :)
We stayed at the New Delhi Railway branch of the Ginger Hotel chain. It's located just 200 meters from the Ajmeri Gate side of the train station, which is convenient for early departures or late arrivals. The hotel is affordable and clean, although the flusher on our toilet didn't work very well. The restaurant has good options for all meals. We want to note that there is a significant amount of noise pollution from the train station - constant honking! If you're a light sleeper, you might want to find a hotel further away from the train station.
We only slept for 2.5 hours and were impressed that we managed to stay out and active the whole day. After spending the morning walking around the backpacker-friendly Pahar Ganj neighborhood (on the opposite side of the train station from Ginger Hotel), we pooled our resources with friends to hire a car and driver for the afternoon, which cost 1,800 rupees total for four hours. Hiring a car and driver is definitely the way to go for sightseeing in Delhi, especially if you're short on time like we were. The city is huge, traffic can get very congested, and a car and driver are relatively affordable.
Because we got a late start to our driving tour, we only managed to see three tourist sites: Red Fort, Raj Ghat, and India Gate. Raj Ghat was especially beautiful. It's the site of Mahatma Gandhi's final resting place. The park areas at Raj Ghat are lovely! If you're not pressed for time, we recommend taking a picnic and staying for a while. ;)
We went to Connaught Place for dinner. The area is filled great restaurants and as well as a famous bakery, Wenger's. We were pretty exhausted by dinner, so we opted to return to the hotel early as opposed to exploring the neighborhood at night. But it looked like a happening place!
The next morning, we woke up at 4:30 am to catch our train to Agra, home of Taj Mahal! Looking forward to sharing that vlog!

Traveling India: Delhi. This video is of our first hours and days in India. Be prepared to see two culture-shocked westerners. No amount of travel guidebooks can prepare you for India. India has a unique allure, I have forever wanted to travel here. In 2008, I set my mind firmly on the goal of getting here, when we purchased 10 year multiple entry visas. We are excited to finally be here experiencing it first hand, culture-shock and all.
I will do my best to film everything as we experience it, both the good and the bad. As every country has it's beauty and it's struggle.

The mausoleum is regarded among art historians as being one of the finest examples of Indian architecture that dates back to the early moghuls of the 16th century. The centre of the tomb complex is surrounded by a tranquil park that is in stark contrast to the normal hustle and bustle of New Delhi.The final resting place of Emperor Humayun is regarded as the model for the almost one hundred year younger Taj Mahal in Agra that was built by Shah Jahan. The acclaimed mausoleum was not the creation of the emperor but of his wife, Haji Begum, who had made construction of the monument possible. The gardens around the tomb have managed to retain their age-old elegance and splendour.

What are some practical and useful tips you should know when traveling to New Delhi, India or another city in India?
Despite India developing rapidly, it still does not have most of the infrastructure and amenities that are so common in the western world. Following a few handy travel tips might make travel for you a whole lot easier while you are in India.
First, if you are taking a taxi from the airport, make sure it is a registered taxi. The best option is to take a prepaid taxi. If that is not available, you should fix the price or make sure that the meter is working. Do not wait till reaching your destination for deciding on the price even if your driver insists on doing so. This applies not only the transportation from the airport but any transportation in gerneral.
If you are traveling within India there are quite a few transportation options available. In India transportation ranges from the pragmatic to the imaginative. Within Delhi the metros the best way to travel. So if you are going somewhere, check if there is a metro route that can get you there. For short distances autos are generally a good bet. Unless the meter is not working. In which case you should find out what the correct rate is from the hotel you are staying at or from the person you are staying with.
If you plan to be sight seeing throughout the day, it is probably a good idea to get an air conditioned cab like this one. Especially so if it is summer. These cabs are generally cheap but check on the prices with your hotel or with the person you are staying with. Just incase. You might want to rent your own car to drive around here. But if you are not used to the streets in Delhi, it is not a recommended option. Always try and get bottled water instead of tap water in this country. Bottled water is widely available. But when you are buying it make sure that the top is sealed.
India has some great street food. But travelers should avoid eating it. If you are really keen, there is some upscale resturants that serve traditional fast food, that is actually hygenic. India has the finest hotels in the whole world. You will find attention and service here of levels far receding often those, even in the West. People here, from the concierge to the bell boy, will be more than willing to help you, even with your smallest bits of luggage. However, there is a slight catch. They all want to be tipped. Fortunately ten or tweenty rupee notes will do the trick, sometimes.
This here is a tweenty rupee note. This is a ten rupee note. This is hundred and this is five hundred. It is always a good idea to have as many as possible of these, that is a ten rupee ad a tweenty rupee note, for tipping and for just about everything else. When you ask somebody for dirrections it is always a good idea to ask somebody else, just to confirm. It is not that somebody wants to give you wrong dirrections or wants to ruin your day, it is just that sometimes people want to be way too helpful.
Most upscale and midscale hotels in the country provide you with basic accessories, like tissue paper and toilet paper. However, if you are putting up in one of those cheaper or small town accomodations you might not want to take these things for granted. All these essentials are available widely across the country. In general stores like the one behind my back. In India, getting your laundry done is not a hastle at all. Laundry takes a day. And the shirts can be ironed within the space of a few minutes. You need not worry about your laundry because it will not take more than a dollar. Getting your shirts wrinkled up is not too much of a hastle.
Always bargin in the market place. Unless you are in a fixed price shop. It is not a good idea to give beggers around the place money. Even if you are tempted too. It just incourages the wrong sort of placement. And anyways the money always goes to someone else and not exactly the person you paid the money. Avoid going to quiet and lonely areas if you are a woman. Dressing conservative is probably the best option. Medical help here is cheaper than any place else and widely available, at least in the cities. However, get a medical refference, like you get anywhere else, before you go to the facility.
When you are traveling back, I will equate enough time to make sure that you get to the airport on time. Even when you travel back late at night you are likely to encounter a traffic jam. Especially when you are traveling from central Delhi to say the airport. Take about an hour at hand but buffer some time in for traffic jams. With these tips you can enjoy a more comfortable, safer and healthier stay in the country. And get around to what is the most important, enjoying the immense beauty and culture you find here. He was also awarded Stockholm Water Prize for the year 2009 by Stockholm International Water Institute in Sweden during the World Water Week and the “Legend of Planet Award” by the Vice-President of the French Senate, during the Founding Congress World Green Games at Paris, France on June 4, 2013.Besides this he has authored several books and has frequently contributed in newspapers and magazines on diverse topics related to health, sanitation and caste based discrimination.

Established in 1949, it holds variety of articles ranging from pre-historic era to modern works of art. It functions under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The museum is situated on the corner of Janpath and Maulana Azad Road.The blue–print of the National Museum had been prepared by the Gwyer Committee set up by the Government of India in 1946. The Museum has around 200,000 works of art, both of Indian and foreign origin, covering over 5,000 years.It also houses the National Museum Institute of History of Arts, Conservation and Museology on the first floor which was established in 1983 and now is a Deemed University since 1989, and runs Masters and Doctoral level courses in History of Art, Conservation and Museology.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) formerly Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, is the main museum in Mumbai, Maharashtra , It was founded in the early years of the 20th century by prominent citizens of Mumbai, with the help of the government, to commemorate the visit of Edward VIII, who was Prince of Wales at the time. It is located in the heart of South Mumbai near the Gateway of India. The museum was renamed in the 1990s or early 2000s after Shivaji, the founder of Maratha Empire. Prior to this, Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, formerly the Victoria and Albert Museum, was established in 1855, just opposite Byculla railway station, Mumbai. This museum is located in side the Victoria Garden, now called Jijamata Udyaan. This Gothic architecture building was revived a few years ago by the Mumbai municipal corporation authorities.
The building is built in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, incorporating elements of other styles of architecture like the Mughal, Maratha and Jain. The museum building is surrounded by a garden of palm trees and formal flower beds.
The museum houses approximately 50,000 exhibits of ancient Indian history as well as objects from foreign lands, categorized primarily into three sections: Art, Archaeology and Natural History. The museum houses Indus Valley Civilization artefacts, and other relics from ancient India from the time of the Guptas, Mauryas, Chalukyas and Rashtrakuta.
In 1904, some leading citizens of Bombay decided to provide a museum to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales, the future King George V. On 14 August 1905, the committee passed a resolution saying:
'Statue of The Prince of Wales, who became the Emperor, George Vth, later
"The museum building embodies the pomp and height at which the British raj was moving ahead with their ambitious plans, in building the great metropolis Bombay". "In keeping pace with the best style of local architecture, many buildings were built, among which, Bombay High Court building, and later, Gateway of India buildings were the most notable ones"
On two sides of the statue has mural type of stone carving depicting the POW inaugurating the museum
The foundation stone was laid by the Prince of Wales on the 11 November 1905 and the museum was formally named "Prince of Wales Museum of Western India". [1] On 1 March 1907, the government of the Bombay Presidency granted the museum committee a piece of land called the "Crescent Site", where the museum now stands. Following an open design competition, in 1909 the architect George Wittet was commissioned to design the Museum building. Wittet had already worked on the design of the General Post Office and in 1911 would design one of Mumbai's most famous landmarks, the Gateway of India. [5]
The museum was funded by the Royal Visit (1905) Memorial Funds. Additionally, the Government and the Municipality granted Rs. 300,000 and Rs. 250,000 respectively. Sir Currimbhoy Ibrahim (first Baronet) donated another Rs. 300,000 and Sir Cowasji Jehangir gave Rs. 50,000. The Museum was established under Bombay Act No. III of 1909. The museum is now maintained by annual grants from the Government and the Bombay Municipal Corporation. The latter pays for these grants from the interest accruing on the funds at the disposal of the Trust of the Museum.
The museum building was completed in 1915, but was used as a Children's Welfare Centre and a Military Hospital during the First World War, before being handed over to the committee in 1920. The Prince of Wales Museum was inaugurated on January 10, 1922, by Lady Lloyd, the wife of George Lloyd, Governor of Bombay.[6]
The museum building is a Grade I Heritage Building of the city and was awarded first prize (Urban Heritage Award) by the Bombay Chapter of the Indian Heritage Society for heritage building maintenance in 1990. In 1998 the Museum was renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya after the warrior king and founder of the Maratha Empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.[7] The museum was renamed after the renaming of the city in 1995, when the colonial name "Bombay" was replaced by the native "Mumbai"

It is located in the centre of Delhi and houses

Constructed in 1639, the Red Fort is named for
Its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone
And is adjacent to the older Salimgarh Fort,
Built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546.
The Red Fort’s innovative architectural style,
Including its garden design, influenced later
Buildings and gardens in Delhi.
The fort was plundered of its artwork and jewels
During Nadir Shah's invasion of the Mughal Empire
In 1747. Most of the fort's precious marble
Structures were subsequently destroyed by the
British following the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857.
The Red Fort was also the site where the British
Put the last Mughal Emperor on trial before
Exiling him to Rangoon in 1858.
