New Delhi (i/ˌnjuː ˈdɛli/) is a municipality and district in Delhi which serves as the capital and seat of government of India. In addition, it also serves as the seat of Government of Delhi.
The foundation stone of the city was laid by George V, Emperor of India during the Delhi Durbar of 1911. It was designed by British architects, Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. The new capital was inaugurated on 13 February 1931, by India's Viceroy Lord Irwin.
Although colloquially Delhi and New Delhi as names are used interchangeably to refer to the jurisdiction of NCT of Delhi, these are two distinct entities, and the latter is a small part of the former.
New Delhi has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.
Calcutta (now Kolkata) was the capital of India during the British Raj until December 1911. However, Delhi had served as the political and financial centre of several empires of ancient India and the Delhi Sultanate, most notably of the Mughal Empire from 1649 to 1857. During the early 1900s, a proposal was made to the British administration to shift the capital of the British Indian Empire (as it was officially called) from Calcutta to Delhi. Unlike Calcutta, which was located on the eastern coast of India, Delhi was at the center of northern India and the Government of British India felt that it would be logistically easier to administer India from the latter rather than the former.
A national museum is a museum maintained by a nation.
The following is a list of national museums:
Delhi (/ˈdɛli/, Hindustani pronunciation: [d̪ɪlliː] Dilli), officially the National Capital Territory of Delhi, is the capital territory of India. Delhi is historically and culturally connected to both the Upper Doab of the Yamuna-Ganges river system and the Punjab region. It is bordered by Haryana on three sides and by Uttar Pradesh to the east. It is the largest city in India in terms of geographical area - about 1,484 square kilometres (573 sq mi). It has a population of about 16.3 million, making it the second most populous city and second most populous urban agglomeration in India and 3rd largest urban area in the world. Such is the nature of urban expansion in Delhi that its growth has expanded beyond the NCT to incorporate towns in neighbouring states and at its largest extent can count a population of about 25 million residents as of 2014.
Delhi has been continuously inhabited since the 6th century BC. Through most of its history, Delhi has served as a capital of various kingdoms and empires. It has been captured, ransacked and rebuilt several times, particularly during the medieval period, and modern Delhi is a cluster of a number of cities spread across the metropolitan region.
A museum (/mjuˈziːəm/; myoo-zee-um) is an institution that cares for (conserves) a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance and makes them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. Most large museums are located in major cities throughout the world and more local ones exist in smaller cities, towns and even the countryside. Museums have varying aims, ranging from serving researchers and specialists to serving the general public. The goal of serving researchers is increasingly shifting to serving the general public.
Some of the most attended museums include the Louvre in Paris, the National Museum of China in Beijing, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the British Museum in London, the National Gallery in London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. There are many types of museums, including art museums, natural history museums, science museums, war museums and children's museums.

The Red Fort was the residence of the Mughal emperor of India for nearly 200 years, until 1857. It is located in the center of Delhi and houses a number of museums. In addition to accommodating the emperors and their households, it was the ceremonial and political centre of Mughal government and the setting for events critically impacting the region. Constructed in 1648 by the fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as the palace of his fortified capital Shahjahanabad, the Red Fort is named for its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone and is adjacent to the older Salimgarh Fort, built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546. The imperial apartments consist of a row of pavilions, connected by a water channel known as the Stream of Paradise (Nahr-i-Behisht). The fort complex is considered to represent the ze...

The National Museum, New Delhi, as we see it today, has an interesting beginning. The blueprint for establishing the National Museum in Delhi was prepared by the Maurice Gwyer Committee in May 1946. An Exhibition of Indian Art, consisting of selected artefacts from various museums of India was organized by the Royal Academy, London with the cooperation of Government of India and Britain. The Exhibition went on display in the galleries of Burlington House, London during the winter months of 1947-48. It was decided to display the same collection in Delhi, before the return of exhibits to their respective museums. An exhibition was organized in the the RashtrapatiBhawan (President’s residence), New Delhi in 1949, which turned out to be a great success. This event proved responsible for the cr...

Just next to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, is located the Indian Air Force Museum, Palam. It is best reached by taxi. There is a parking lot just next to the entrance so the driver can wait here. A nice and polite Sikh guard with a rifle was posted at the entry. The staff is very nice and likes to talk about airplanes. There is a small souvenir shop where you can buy a few items at almost no cost. The museum contains quite a few things of interest and it covers the story from the colonial days, the second world war to the birth of the India Air Forces and the space age and modern times. The exhibition is quite large but somewhat worn down. It contains some rare and special items such as a Japanese suicide rocket plane ("Ohka"). There is also a B-24 on display, a Spitfire and a...

February 13, 2015 www.instagram.com/timandglo And so our 12-day adventure in India begins! We took an Air India red-eye flight direct from Shanghai to New Delhi. Our flight was a little delayed, so we only arrived in New Delhi at 3:00 am. We used the prepaid car service inside the arrivals terminal for transportation from the airport to our hotel. This was a mistake! We were charged 1,500 rupees only to find out that we could have used the prepaid taxi service just outside the terminal for 500 rupees. Something to remember for next time! :) We stayed at the New Delhi Railway branch of the Ginger Hotel chain. It's located just 200 meters from the Ajmeri Gate side of the train station, which is convenient for early departures or late arrivals. The hotel is affordable and clean, although t...

Travel video about destination Humayun's Tomb in India. On the south eastern periphery of today’s metropolis of New Delhi is the large and magnificent tomb of the famous Indian emperor, Humayun. The centre of the tomb complex is surrounded by a tranquil park that is in stark contrast to the normal hustle and bustle of New Delhi. The final resting place of Emperor Humayun is regarded as the model for the almost one hundred year younger Taj Mahal in Agra that was built by Shah Jahan. The acclaimed mausoleum was not the creation of the emperor but of his wife, Haji Begum, who had made construction of the monument possible. The garde...
