Derry (/ˈdɛrɪ/), officially Londonderry (/ˈlʌndənˌdɛrɪ/), is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fourth-largest city on the island of Ireland. The name Derry is an anglicisation of the Irish name Daire or Doire meaning "oak grove". In 1613, the city was granted a Royal Charter by King James I and gained the "London" prefix to reflect the funding of its construction by the London guilds. While the city is more usually known colloquially as Derry, Londonderry is also commonly used and remains the legal name.
The old walled city lies on the west bank of the River Foyle, which is spanned by two road bridges and one footbridge. The city now covers both banks (Cityside on the west and Waterside on the east). The city district also extends to rural areas to the southeast. The population of the city proper (the area defined by its 17th century charter) was 83,652 in the 2001 Census, while the Derry Urban Area had a population of 90,736. The district is administered by Derry City & Strabane District Council and contains both Londonderry Port and City of Derry Airport.
Northern Ireland (Irish: Tuaisceart Éireann [ˈt̪ˠuəʃcəɾˠt̪ˠ ˈeːɾʲən̪ˠ]; Ulster Scots: Norlin Airlann) is a constituent unit of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the northeast of the island of Ireland. It is variously described as a country, province, region, or "part" of the United Kingdom, amongst other terms. Northern Ireland shares a border to the south and west with the Republic of Ireland. In 2011, its population was 1,810,863, constituting about 30% of the island's total population and about 3% of the UK's population. Established by the Northern Ireland Act 1998 as part of the Good Friday Agreement, the Northern Ireland Assembly holds responsibility for a range of devolved policy matters, while other areas are reserved for the British government. Northern Ireland co-operates with the Republic of Ireland in some areas, and the Agreement granted the Republic the ability to "put forward views and proposals" with "determined efforts to resolve disagreements between the two governments".
Riot police are police who are organized, deployed, trained or equipped to confront crowds, protests or riots.
Riot police may be regular police who act in the role of riot police in particular situations or they may be separate units organized within or in parallel to regular police forces. Riot police are used in a variety of different situations and for a variety of different purposes. They may be employed to control riots as their name suggests, to disperse or control crowds, to maintain public order or discourage criminality, or to protect people or property. In some cases, riot police may function as a tool of political repression by violently breaking up protests and suppressing dissent or civil disobedience. In recent decades, observers have noted the increasing militarization of riot and protest policing, with police deploying snipers, flashbang grenades and guns with plastic bullets.
Riot police often use special equipment termed riot gear to help protect themselves and attack others. Riot gear typically includes personal armor, batons, riot shields and riot helmets. Many riot police teams also deploy specialized less-than-lethal weapons, such as pepper spray, tear gas, rifles that fire rubber bullets, stun grenades, and Long Range Acoustic Devices.
The Apprentice Boys of Derry is a Protestant fraternal society with a worldwide membership of over 10,000, founded in 1814 and based in the city of Derry, Northern Ireland. There are clubs and branches in Ulster and elsewhere in Ireland, Scotland, England and Toronto, Canada. The society aims to commemorate the 1689 Siege of Derry when Catholic James II of England and Ireland and VII of Scotland laid siege to the walled city which was at the time a Protestant stronghold. Apprentice Boys parades once regularly led to virulent opposition from the city's Irish nationalist majority, but recently a more conciliatory approach has taken place and now the parades are virtually trouble-free. The 2014 'Shutting of the Gates' parade was described as "the biggest in years" and was violence-free.
Ireland (i/ˈaɪərlənd/; Irish: Éire [ˈeːɾʲə]; Ulster-Scots: Airlann [ˈɑːrlən]) is an island in the North Atlantic. It is separated from Great Britain to its east by the North Channel, the Irish Sea, and St George's Channel. Ireland is the second-largest island of the British Isles, the third-largest in Europe, and the twentieth-largest on Earth.
Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland (officially named Ireland), which covers five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, and located in the northeast of the island. In 2011 the population of Ireland was about 6.4 million, ranking it the second-most populous island in Europe after Great Britain. Just under 4.6 million live in the Republic of Ireland and just over 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland.
The island's geography comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable climate which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the Middle Ages. As of 2013, the amount of land that is wooded in Ireland is about 11% of the total, compared with a European average of 35%. There are 26 extant mammal species native to Ireland. The Irish climate is very moderated and classified as oceanic. As a result, winters are milder than expected for such a northerly area. However, summers are cooler than those in Continental Europe. Rainfall and cloud cover are abundant.

Northern Ireland's second largest city saw conflict in the 1970s. But Derry or Londonderry as it is also known, has had a huge facelift in the last few years with a lot of rebuilding. These improvements have been recognised and it has now been named Britain's first City of Culture for 2013. More Euromaxx: http://www.dw.de/program/euromaxx/s-7555-9798
Natural Sound Chaos reigned in Northern Ireland's second-largest city of Londonderry on Saturday night, with Catholics and police involved in pitched street battles. At least 2-thousand Catholics hurled rocks, bricks and petrol bombs at police overnight, while police retaliated with volleys of plastic bullets. Catholics used vans and cars to set up barricades in the streets of Londonderry before they began pelting police with petrol bombs. The police and British Army used armoured vehicles for protection. At one point, police came out from behind their lines to beat a man with their batons. Police also retaliated with volleys of plastic bullets. The Irish government was scathing in its criticism of the British response to Protestant rioting, straining relations between t...
Beautiful Nothern Irish anthem "Londonderry Aire", also known as "Danny Boy". Performed with Celtic harp and tin whistle. The song has been interpreted by some listeners as a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora. Some interpret it differently,[who?] such a dying father speaking to his leaving Danny. The phrase, "the pipes, the pipes are calling", in this interpretation, could refer to the traditional funeral instrument. The song is widely considered an Irish anthem. "Danny Boy" is considered by many Irish Americans and Irish Canadians to be their unofficial signature song.

Derry or, more officially, Londonderry is the second largest city of Northern Ireland. The city is also nicknamed the Maiden City by virtue of the fact that its walls were never breached despite being besieged on three separate occasions. Derry is the only remaining walled city in Ireland that is completely intact and it is one of the finest examples of a walled city in Europe. There are many historical buildings that can be visited when walking down the City Walls. St Columb’s Cathedral is the mother church of the Ireland Diocese of Derry. Situated along the City Walls, First Derry Presbyterian Church has recently been re-opened and is now used as a place of worship. Another admirable church of great importance is the neo-Gothic St Augustine’s Church. Located within the historic wal...

You’re in for a most curious journey when you visit Mussenden Temple. Perched on the cliffs of northwestern Ireland, this striking circular building was originally constructed as a library for the Bishop of Derry. Following a tour of Mussenden Temple, you might think its classical style is slightly out of place amidst Ireland’s largely medieval architecture—and you would be right. Mussenden Temple sightseeing reveals a building inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Italy. It is said that in 1777, the Bishop of Derry tried to purchase the Temple of Vesta and have it transported to Ireland, but his efforts were rebuffed. As a result, he built Mussenden Temple, which now stands watch over the cliffs and the roiling blue sea below. What did you like most about Mussenden Temple? Visit our Mu...

"Fuck a Pope." Tension between the Protestants and Catholics are high in Belfast, Ireland. Often described as the European capitol of terrorism, troubles continue years after the Good Friday peace agreement. VICE headed over to Belfast, in the lead up to this year's Twelfth parade, and tensions were running higher than any period in recent memory: It was only a few months since a 25-year-old Catholic police officer was murdered by dissident republicans (to dissuade others from joining the force) and just weeks after altercations between nationalists and unionists in east Belfast ended in riots and multiple shootings, including a cameraman. What better time to explore Belfast and marinate in the divisive hate? To learn more about the conflict in Belfast, head over to: http://www.yout...

"Derry will be the #1 tourist destination in Ireland", says historian and retired bank manager, John McNulty. McNulty, a dedicated Martin McCrossan Walking Tour guide, had just completed our walking tour of the walls of the only remaining completely walled city in Ireland. I was interested to note that many on the tour were Irish residents. The tour included a coffee which, by chance, lead me to the editor of the Derry Journal and executive directo of the local theatre. Meeting people in Northern Ireland is no problem!
