Mark Farina

Mark Farina (born March 25, 1969 in Chicago, Illinois, USA) is a disc jockey and musician, known for his Chicago house, acid jazz and downtempo works. Notable releases include Mood (KMS Records, 1989) and the Mushroom Jazz series (Om Records, 1996–2011), and recently known also from house compilations El Divinio. He is primarily identified with the house music scene in San Francisco, California, where he resides, but DJs widely around the world.

Shortly after Mark befriended Derrick Carter in 1988 at a record store in Chicago, he developed an interest in House music. Mark experimented with a deeper style, dropping De La Soul, disco classics and other styles not being played in the main rooms of nightclubs. While exploring purist forms of House Music, Mark developed his trademark style, known as "Mushroom Jazz": acid jazz infused with the West Coast's jazzy, organic productions along with urban beats. Fans embraced Mark's downtempo style, and he started a weekly Mushroom Jazz club night in San Francisco with Patty Ryan. In 3 years at the club, Farina and Mushroom Jazz established a following. When the club closed, Farina continued the tradition by releasing a series of CDs under the same name, Mushroom Jazz. Since then, Mark has been performing hundreds of shows worldwide each year. His House sets have been described as the jazzy side of Chicago House mixed San Francisco style. Some of his sets have been known to last up to 8 hours. Farina has been known to play two different rooms at the same party. URB, MUZIK and BPM Magazines have all had him on their Top DJs in the World lists.

Mushroom Jazz

Mushroom Jazz is a series of musical compilations by DJ Mark Farina. Originating in 1992 these were released on cassette tape, then since 1997 have been commercial CD and vinyl releases. Farina combines elements of downtempo, hip hop, jazz and R&B, French, Latin, beatmatching and mixing songs together. As with Farina's house mixes, the Mushroom Jazz series incorporates transitionary effects (such as a high pass filter) and a generally dry reverb tone.

Originally launched as a cassette series, the Mushroom Jazz tapes grew from the first Chicago run of 50 copies each on to the next stage, where 500 copies of several volumes were easily distributed and sought after.

As the acid jazz boom began, he perfected his sound and fused the newest tracks from the West Coast's jazzy, organic producers with the more urban sounds he had championed in Chicago. While the predominant musical force in San Francisco was still dark, dubby House and Wicked-style Breaks, the city embraced the downtempo movement with a healthy bunch of live bands and DJs generating the tunes.

After hanging out at local Chicago clubs like Medusa´s, he met his future mixing partner, Derrick Carter, and together they piloted an acclaimed Friday night mix show on Northwestern University´s WNUR. Farina set off to San Francisco in the early ´90s and hasn´t looked back. For four years, he headlined a Monday night party and became known in the Bay Area for championing Mushroom Jazz, a downtempo sound incorporating everything from Soul II Soul to De La Soul. With these parties regularly drawing 700 people who knew how to start the week, and an accompanying series of Mushroom Jazz mix tapes, the Farina legend soon spread nationwide.
