Cordelia's Dad is a band from Northampton, Massachusetts that combines folk and punk rock influences and was instrumental in the creation of the genre later to be dubbed "No Depression". The band formed in 1987 and was active until 1998, when the members relocated to different parts of the country. After releasing an album of older material in 2002 the band reunited in 2007 for their twentieth anniversary.
Cordelia's Dad was founded in 1987 by Amherst College students Tim Eriksen (bass, vocals), Peter Irvine (drums), Tom King (guitar). Although all three had previous experiences with traditional American music their initial sound was closer to that of alternative rock bands like Dinosaur Jr. and accordingly they recorded their first, eponymous album at Fort Apache Studios in Boston. The main distinguishing characteristic from their Fort Apache peers was that with few exceptions, their early recorded output consisted entirely of Anglo-American traditional folk tunes recorded as rock songs. Their second album How Can I Sleep, recorded by Dave Schramm continued the prominent use of traditional material, but increased the share of songs played as acoustic folk songs, starting a trend to call the sound of the band "schizophrenic". The transition to folk outfit was completed in 1993 with the recording of the limited release mini-album The Joy Fun Garden for German mail order label Return to Sender (a sublabel of Normal Records, which released all Cordelia's Dad albums in Germany). King left after the recording to be replaced by bassist Cath Oss. Eriksen switched to guitar and their third regular album, Comet (1995) continued the conversion toward an acoustic sound, with only a single song, the closer "Jersey City", being played with rock instruments.
Cordelia is a feminine given name. It was borne by the tragic heroine of Shakespeare's King Lear (1606), a character based on the legendary queen Cordeilla. The name is of uncertain origin. It is popularly associated with Latin cor (genitive cordis) "heart", and has also been linked with the Welsh name Creiddylad, allegedly meaning "jewel of the sea", but it may derive from the French coeur de lion "heart of a lion".
Tim Eriksen is an American musician, musicologist, and professor. He is the leader of the band Cordelia's Dad, a solo artist, and was a performer and consultant for the award-winning soundtrack of the film Cold Mountain.
Cordelia's Dad combines old-time music and punk rock influences to create a unique sound. The Village Voice describes the band as "semi-reformed punks turned shape-note singers...recently gone entirely acoustic, but buzzing with metaphorical electricity". The band has released nine full length albums, played festivals such as The Newport Folk Festival, and toured with notable bands Nirvana, Uncle Tupelo, and Weezer.
Eriksen successfully defended his PhD in ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University in May 2015, having received an M.A. in the same discipline from Wesleyan in 1993, and has served as a visiting music professor at Dartmouth College, Amherst College, Hampshire College and the University of Minnesota. He has also taught in Poland and The Czech Republic. Additionally, Eriksen is a collector of variations of folk songs, and has conducted extensive research on traditional Yugoslavian music. Eriksen shared his extensive knowledge of folk music while a consultant for the soundtrack of the film Cold Mountain. In 2011, Eriksen taught a class on the history of The Sacred Harp at Smith College.
Katie Cruel is a traditional American folksong, likely of Scottish origin. As a traditional song, it has been recorded by many performers, but the best known recording of the song is by Karen Dalton on the album In My Own Time. The American version of the song is said to date to the Revolutionary War period.
The American lyrics appear to contain an oblique story of regret. As given in Eloise Hubbard Linscott's The Folk Songs of Old New England, the full lyrics are:
When I first came to town,
They called me the roving jewel;
Now they've changed their tune,
They call me Katy Cruel,
Oh, diddle, lully day,
Oh, de little lioday.
Chorus
Oh that I was where I would be,
Then I would be where I am not,
Here I am where I must be,
Go where I would, I can not,
Oh, diddle, lully day,
Oh, de little lioday.
When I first came to town,
They brought me the bottles plenty;
Now they've changed their tune,
They bring me the bottles empty,
Oh, diddle, lully day,
Oh, de little lioday.
Chorus
I know who I love,
And I know who does love me;
I know where I'm going,
And I know who's going with me,
Oh, diddle, lully day,
Oh, de little lioday.
Chorus
Through the woods I go,
And through the bogs and mire,
Straightway down the road,
And to my heart's desire,
Oh, diddle, lully day,
Oh, de little lioday.
Chorus
Eyes as bright as coal,
Lips as bright as cherry,
and 'tis her delight
To make the young girls merry,
Oh, diddle, lully day,
Oh, de little lioday.
Chorus
When I first came to town
They called me the roving jewel
Now they've changed their tune
They call me Katy Cruel
Oh, diddle, lully day,
Oh, de little lioday.
Trav’ler haste, the night comes on, Many a shining hour is gone; Storm is gathering in the west, And you are so far from home. Chorus: Oh, come, trav’ler, haste away, You must walk while it is day. Oh, come, trav’ler, haste away, You will find Christ in the way. Far from home thy footsteps stray; Christ is the life and Christ the way. Christ the light, yon setting sun, Ere the noon is scarce begun. (Chorus) Rising tempest sweeps the sky, Rains descend, the winds are high, Waters swell and death and fear Sets thy path no refuge near.
http://timeriksenmusic.com/ From a one off show in Sidmouth, which was a lot of fun. I don't know why, but this song follows me around. This arrangement isn't everyone's cup of tea apparently, but other than singing it properly at a sing it's about my favorite way of doing it. I'm uploading from the Ljubljana airport, which is almost completely deserted, but has free wifi. Next stop Beograd....

A traditional song, also known as Edward, it is one of the oldest written lyrics in the English Language. This version is from Cordelia's Dad from their album Comet, featuring Tim Eriksen on vocal.
Performed by the band Cordelia's Dad at its 20th anniversary show in 2007 at the Iron Horse Music Hall, the same club where the band had its first club show in 1987.

I know its a Spencer carbine on the pic and not a spencer rifle.
Tim Eriksen with Cordelia's Dad do their own arrangement of a traditional song, also known as The Butcher's Boy. All rights belong to Tim Eriksen, Cordelia's Dad, and their label and publisher. I am a fan who uploaded this because there was no clear audio of this song on Youtube.

[NO SOUND] This is a "Beat Dad's Score" playthrough on Stage 4, Ranked Mode, Normal difficulty for Lollipop Chainsaw on PS3 for the Super Hunter Trophy. Stage 4 is the Fulci Fun Center (Arcade Action at the Fulci Fun Center). You can also do this in story mode but since I needed to complete Ranked on this stage, I did it in Ranked mode. My recording was somewhat messed up and the sound was left out for some reason. Silence is golden, I guess. During the Elevator mini-game, I spent some time farming for medals by failing the 4 QTE zombie head stomps. Instead, I dropped down and did Armadillo Spins to get Sparkle Hunting medals. I farmed up to 30 platinum medals before proceeding. You don't really need that many, but I just wanted to make sure. Try to get multiple kills via Sparkle Hu...
I mean I could have just done this level over again for a better score but GOOD 'NUFF.

He and his wife Kate Grubb of West Virginia lost their daughter Jessica in March to a drug overdose.
