Leonard Bernstein (/ˈbɜːrnstaɪn/; August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990) was an American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer, and pianist. He was among the first conductors born and educated in the US to receive worldwide acclaim. According to music critic Donal Henahan, he was "one of the most prodigiously talented and successful musicians in American history."
His fame derived from his long tenure as the music director of the New York Philharmonic, from his conducting of concerts with most of the world's leading orchestras, and from his music for West Side Story, Peter Pan,Candide, Wonderful Town, On the Town, On The Waterfront, his Mass, and a range of other compositions, including three symphonies and many shorter chamber and solo works.
Bernstein was the first conductor to give numerous television lectures on classical music, starting in 1954 and continuing until his death. He was a skilled pianist, often conducting piano concertos from the keyboard.
An orchestra (/ˈɔːrkᵻstrə/ or US /ˈɔːrˌkɛstrə/; Italian: [orˈkɛstra]) is a large instrumental ensemble used in classical music that contains sections of string (violin, viola, cello and double bass), brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. Other instruments such as the piano and celesta may sometimes be grouped into a fifth section such as a keyboard section or may stand alone, as may the concert harp and, for 20th and 21st century compositions, electric and electronic instruments. The term orchestra derives from the Greek ὀρχήστρα, the name for the area in front of an ancient Greek stage reserved for the Greek chorus. The orchestra grew by accretion throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, but changed very little in composition during the course of the 20th century.
The Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is an Australian symphony orchestra. It was founded in 1932 as the National Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. Since its opening in 1973, the Sydney Opera House has been its home concert hall. The orchestra's chief conductor is David Robertson who succeeded Vladimir Ashkenazy at the beginning of 2014.
The Sydney Symphony performs around 150 concerts a year to a combined annual audience of more than 350,000. The regular subscription concert series are mostly performed at the Sydney Opera House, but other venues around Sydney are used as well, including the City Recital Hall at Angel Place and the Sydney Town Hall. The Town Hall was the home of the orchestra until the opening of the Opera House in 1973. Since then, most concerts have been taking place in the Opera House's Concert Hall (capacity: 2,679 seats). A major annual event for the orchestra is Symphony in the Domain, a free evening outdoor picnic concert held in the summer month of January in the large city park known as The Domain. This event draws audiences of over 80,000 and is a long-established part of the Sydney summer cultural calendar.

DONATE ONLINE: https://palestrina.foundation/donate Thank you to everyone who came to our concert ‘Bach, Britten, Bernstein’ last week: it was a great success. In this video, you can hear some of our boy Choristers talking about their experiences singing in the City Recital Hall for the concert and about the Choir in general, and some recordings of the performance. Next year we are celebrating our 200th anniversary. This is a real milestone: not only for us in Saint Mary’s Cathedral Choir, but also for Australia, as we are the oldest currently-operating musical ensemble in the country. To mark the occasion of our 200th birthday, we have the goal of raising $1 million by the end of 2018. The funds raised will in part go towards some of our celebrations, including a major tour to Rome so ...

In 1979 the studio was refurbished and acoustically treated by Mel Cheetham, with the control rooms re-built next door. In its heyday, it was used to record theme tunes and soundtracks for classic ITV dramas such as Jewel in the Crown, Brideshead Revisited and Sherlock Holmes, often by sections of the Halle Orchestra. ...

10/2/13 - "This is the first time I can say this in the history of Morning Joe, Carl, but you're actually outnumbered by conservatives this morning," co-host Joe Scarborough told guest Carl Bernstein Wednesday morning. Bernstein ignited a nearly eight-minute fight—epic by cable news standards—when he likened the House GOP's effort to conflate the defunding or delaying of ObamaCare with government funding to McCarthyism. "Eric Cantor (R-VA) and his Republican Party are the most dangerous, demagogic force in politics since Joe McCarthy," Bernstein said. "What we're seeing is a redefinition and understanding of Barack Obama's presidency, which is to protect America's security from this precipice from having the kind of power that's ruinous to this democracy." "That's an incredibly cheap sh...

A film by Georg Wübbolt Leonard Bernstein was America’s musical ambassador to the world. This fascinating documentary shows why Bernstein was one of the most influential classical musicians of the last century. He was an inspirational teacher, a brilliant conductor, a fine composer, and an accomplished pianist. In his role as an educator, he found and fascinated an even larger audience of young listeners on television shows such as Omnibus and Young People’s Concerts. As a composer (West Side Story, On the Town etc.) he could bridge gaps and break down barriers in an extraordinarily skilful and yet accessible manner, reaching a large audience worldwide, way beyond classical music. The film includes interviews with Leonard Bernstein’s children, Jamie, Alexander and Nina Bernstein, Gustavo ...

In 1973 Bernstein gave six talks in Harvard. This is a footage from his 5th Lecture, titled "the 20th century Crysis". In the beginning, he talked about the work of Arnold Schoenberg, and how music has come to a landmark and ambiguous point with matters regarding tonality, melody and musical structure (namely "the 20th century Crysis"). This footage begins as a musical excerpt that has been used, the Alban Berg's violin concerto showing a beautiful work of Schoenberg's new composing method ("serialism"), ends. Then, Bernstein takes us a trip into the world of Gustav Mahler and ,in particular, his last complete work. He shows us an aspect of Mahler's importance in music from 1908 till now, and how great art can, as always had, turn us into more completed human beings. It is a fact, that ...
