About the Project

As of today, it is estimated that there are more than 7 billion humans living on Earth.
Humans have only been a glimpse in the Earth’s timeline, yet in the last 200 years the evolution of mankind has skyrocketed as well as the need for Earth’s resources.
Skyscrapers are growing taller than the next, like huge trees battling for sunlight. At night, from a higher point of view, traffic evokes lava flowing down a volcano.
Like a giant ant colony, humans have made this planet their own. But what about the Earth? Can we continue to take without consequences?
The City Limits tries to show that even though humans are the dominant species on the planet, there is something bigger than us.
In Carl Sagan’s own words “Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us.”
Human progress and technology are developing at exponential rates but at what cost?

About the Project

An homage to North America’s most European city
In 1953, Alfred Hitchcock and his Hollywood crew flew to a small French Canadian town called Quebec. There, they filmed one of the “Master of Suspense” most underrated movies: “I, Confess”.
Hitchcock said he chose Quebec City mostly for convenient reasons. It was a perfect substitute for his beloved Paris with its Gothic churches and Old World charm. The French Canadian city was a cinematic natural.
Founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain, Quebec is one of the oldest cities in North America and definitely has a European feel to it.
More than 30 years after the filming of “I, Confess”, I began a fascination for Alfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful and masterful movies. I was thrilled and even surprised to find out that he shot one of them in my hometown and for the most part not very far from where I lived as a young boy. It inspired me to rediscover my city.
Armed with my camera and a good winter coat, I braved the frozen winter months and began filming scenes of my own. With Hitchcock’s movie soundtracks in my headphones, I walked every street corner and looked everywhere for the perfect point of view of Quebec. What came out of my quest was my first time lapse piece. An homage to “Hitch” but also an homage to my hometown: “La Vieille Capitale”.

Karel Domin
Karel Domin (4 May 1882, Kutná Hora, Kingdom of Bohemia – 10 June 1953, Prague) was a Czech botanist and politician.
After gymnasium school coll studies in Příbram, he studied botany at the Charles University in Prague, and graduated in 1906. In 1916 he was named as professor of botany. Domin specialised in phytogeography, geobotany and plant taxonomy. He became a member at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, published many scientific works and founded a botany institute at the university. The Domin scale, a commonly used means of classifying a standard area by the number of plant species found in that area, is named after him.
In the academic year 1933-34 he was rector of Charles University and was one of the participants of a struggle for ancient academic insignia between the Czech and German universities of Prague (the insigniáda) that resulted in street-fights and looting. From 1935 to 1939 he was a member of parliament; after the Munich Agreement, he co-founded a traditionalist political movement (Akce národní obrody).

--------------------------- About the Project --------------------------- This first installment in this multi-part series is the beginning of a long-term project in which I want to capture the rise of modern civilization, from ancient societies to the bustling and modern cities of today. Travelling to Europe made me realize how much the past is still present in our everyday lives. Our cultural institutions are the product of those who lived before us and of the societies they built. The remnants of the past are still a significant part of the modern era. In Civilization: The Rise of Europe, I travelled to 14 cities in 4 countries filled with history who had major influences in shaping the world in which we live in: England, France, Italy and Spain. In these locations you can see the remains of the vast Roman Empire, the intertwined Muslim, Christian and Jewish cultures, the birthplace of the Age of Enlightenment, the European emblem of parliamentary democracy as well as many UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is also those same countries that would eventually embark on a journey to the New World and build the foundations of America. Civilization will make you travel in the past, but also in the present, to show you the enormous steps mankind has made throughout history. Humans have only been a glimpse in the Earth’s timeline, yet in the last 200 years the evolution of mankind has skyrocketed as well as the need for Earth’s resources. Skyscrapers are growing taller than the next, like huge trees battling for sunlight. At night, from a higher point of view, traffic evokes lava flowing down a volcano. Like a giant ant colony, humans have made this planet their own. But what about the Earth? Can we continue to take without consequences? There, they filmed one of the “Master of Suspense” most underrated movies: “I, Confess”. Hitchcock said he chose Quebec City mostly for convenient reasons. It was a perfect substitute for his beloved Paris with its Gothic churches and Old World charm. The French Canadian city was a cinematic natural. Founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain, Quebec is one of the oldest cities in North America and definitely has a European feel to it. The City Limits tries to show that even though humans are the dominant species on the planet, there is something bigger than us.
In Carl Sagan’s own words “Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us.”

More than 30 years after the filming of “I, Confess”, I began a fascination for Alfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful and masterful movies. I was thrilled and even surprised to find out that he shot one of them in my hometown and for the most part not very far from where I lived as a young boy. It inspired me to rediscover my city.
Armed with my camera and a good winter coat, I braved the frozen winter months and began filming scenes of my own. With Hitchcock’s movie soundtracks in my headphones, I walked every street corner and looked everywhere for the perfect point of view of Quebec. What came out of my quest was my first time lapse piece. An homage to “Hitch” but also an homage to my hometown: “La Vieille Capitale”.

In Civilization: The Rise of Europe, I travelled to 14 cities in 4 countries filled with history who had major influences in shaping the world in which we live in: England, France, Italy and Spain.
In these locations you can see the remains of the vast Roman Empire, the intertwined Muslim, Christian and Jewish cultures, the birthplace of the Age of Enlightenment, the European emblem of parliamentary democracy as well as many UNESCO World Heritage sites.
It is also those same countries that would eventually embark on a journey to the New World and build the foundations of America.
Civilization will make you travel in the past, but also in the present, to show you the enormous steps mankind has made throughout history. Hopefully it will give you awareness of our incredible cultural heritage.

About the Project

This first installment in this multi-part series is the beginning of a long-term project in which I want to capture the rise of modern civilization, from ancient societies to the bustling and modern cities of today.
Travelling to Europe made me realize how much the past is still present in our everyday lives. Our cultural institutions are the product of those who lived before us and of the societies they built. The remnants of the past are still a significant part of the modern era.
In Civilization: The Rise of Europe, I travelled to 14 cities in 4 countries filled with history who had major influences in shaping the world in which we live in: England, France, Italy and Spain.

Award winning Australian short film, Two Men, directed by Dominic Allen and shot in the Kimberly town of Fitzroy Crossing by Joel Betts, features a robust and dynamic cast of indigenous Australian non actors. With an original soundtrack by Melbourne artist Felix Riebl, Based on Kafka's short story, Two Men Running, Allen's short film has been screened internationally at film festivals including New York, Prague, London, Melbourne and Sydney and in 2009 was a Dendy Australian Short Film of the Year finalist.
The film was instrumental in supporting director Dominic Allen's Emerging Australian Filmmaker Award at the Melbourne International Film Festival and the 2009 Inside Film Rising Talent Award.
2009 MIFF Jury member Deb Verhoeven remarked "Two Men proves that the simplest scenario can provide the perfect premise for conveying the most profound insights. But (Allen's) key achievement is to understand that even the largest ideas are best told with brevity and the most serious with humour."
Two Men was made with the support of Yiriman, a community initiated and community driven project supported by the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre which aims to build stories, strength and resilience in the Kimberley's youth.
