Production designer Mark Leese, whose prolific film career includes Shane Meadows’ This Is England, Stuart Murdoch’s God Help the Girl and Peter Mullan's NEDS, brings twenty years experiance to this masterclass on the craft of bringing a film set to life.
During this fascinating discussion, Leese talks the audience through the process of starting with a script and breaking it down to its design components, and explains the inferences and choices a designer might have to make to create the space for the script to be filmed.
"We like metaphors, and we like symbolism," jokes Leese with the audience. "But that’s the trick, that’s what it’s about: it’s about thinking about these characters. What do they do? What do they say? Could we look a bit deeper inside them and can we use some of that to influence the environment? And it could be little droplets, little clues, that you don’t notice ‘til later on."

Production designer
In film and television, a production designer or P.D is the person responsible for the overall look of a filmed event such as a TV program, video game, music video, or advertisement. Production designers have a key creative role in the creation of motion pictures and television. Working directly with the director and producer, they must select the settings and style to visually tell the story. The term "production designer" was coined by William Cameron Menzies while he was working on the film Gone with the Wind. Previously (and often subsequently) the people with the same responsibilities were called "art directors".
Societies and trade organizations
In the United States and Europe as well as Mexico, production designers are represented by IATSE local 800; the Art Directors Guild. The production design credit must be requested by the producer, prior to completion of photography, and submitted to the Art Directors Guild Board of Directors for the credit approval. In Canada, production designers are represented by the Director's Guild of Canada, except in British Columbia where they are represented by IATSE.

20th century
The 20th century was a century that began on January 1, 1901 and ended on December 31, 2000. It was the tenth and final century of the 2nd millennium. It is distinct from the century known as the 1900s (sometimes written as 19XX), which began on January 1, 1900 and ended on December 31, 1999.
Dubbed the "short twentieth century", this century in human history was dominated by chain of events that heralded significant changes in world history as to redefine the era: World War I and World War II, nationalism and decolonization, the Cold War and Post-Cold War conflicts, cultural homogenization through developments in transportation and communications technology, world population growth, awareness of environmental degradation, ecological extinction and the birth of the Digital Revolution. It saw great advances in communication and medical technology that by the late 1980s allowed for near-instantaneous worldwide computer communication and genetic modification of life.
Overview
The century had the first global-scale total wars between world powers across continents and oceans in World War I and World War II. Nationalism became a major political issue in the world in the 20th century, acknowledged in international law along with the right of nations to self-determination, official decolonization in the mid-century, and nationalist-influenced armed regional-conflicts.

Design
Design is the creation of a plan or convention for the construction of an object or a system (as in architectural blueprints, engineering drawings, business processes, circuit diagrams and sewing patterns). Design has different connotations in different fields (see design disciplines below). In some cases the direct construction of an object (as in pottery, engineering, management, cowboy coding and graphic design) is also considered to be design.
Designing often necessitates considering the aesthetic, functional, economic and sociopolitical dimensions of both the design object and design process. It may involve considerable research, thought, modeling, interactive adjustment, and re-design. Meanwhile, diverse kinds of objects may be designed, including clothing, graphical user interfaces, skyscrapers, corporate identities, business processes and even methods of designing.
Thus "design" may be a substantive referring to a categorical abstraction of a created thing or things (the design of something), or a verb for the process of creation, as is made clear by grammatical context.

Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther film will mark the first solo outing for the character and the first live-action depiction of his home, Wakanda. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Wakanda imagines an isolated African nation whose borders have never been penetrated by colonizers or conquerers—at least none who can live to tell the tale. It’s also famous for its large vibranium reserves, which contribute to its technological advancement. Tasked with bringing this world to life is production designer Hannah Beachler. In the video above, Beachler discusses working with director Ryan Coogler, and the challenge of balancing technologically advanced design, with a country whose African traditions were never influenced by colonization. Plot: The film is set in a small town near Warsaw, to which a young and coming director comes to produce a classic play (Wyspianski "Wyzwolenie") with a modern vein. Production designer Mark Leese, whose prolific film career includes Shane Meadows’ This Is England, Stuart Murdoch’s God Help the Girl and Peter Mullan's NEDS, brings twenty years experiance to this masterclass on the craft of bringing a film set to life.
During this fascinating discussion, Leese talks the audience through the process of starting with a script and breaking it down to its design components, and explains the inferences and choices a designer might have to make to create the space for the script to be filmed.
"We like metaphors, and we like symbolism," jokes Leese with the audience. "But that’s the trick, that’s what it’s about: it’s about thinking about these characters. What do they do? What do they say? Could we look a bit deeper inside them and can we use some of that to influence the environment? And it could be little droplets, little clues, that you don’t notice ‘til later on."

During this fascinating discussion, Leese talks the audience through the process of starting with a script and breaking it down to its design components, and explains the inferences and choices a designer might have to make to create the space for the script to be filmed.
"We like metaphors, and we like symbolism," jokes Leese with the audience. "But that’s the trick, that’s what it’s about: it’s about thinking about these characters. What do they do? What do they say? Could we look a bit deeper inside them and can we use some of that to influence the environment? And it could be little droplets, little clues, that you don’t notice ‘til later on."

In this spirit, I recently sat down with The Martian production designer Arthur Max. Unlike most interviews where we tend to focus on one film, I used my time with him to talk about the job as a whole, and what goes on behind the scenes. Of course we also talked about making The Martian, collaborating with Ridley Scott, developing their own gravity wheel that recalls 2001: A Space Odyssey, an unannounced 15th century medieval fantasy movie he’s working on instead of the new Alien movie, and more. While we post a lot of interviews with actors, directors, and producers, the staff and I decided it’s time to talk with more people who don't necessarily get the spotlight. The fact is that a movie only is only as good as its “below the line” crew, and we all feel that they aren’t given enough credit. To try and rectify this, you can look forward to more interviews with Costume Designers, Production Designers, Composers, Editors, Cinematographers, and other craftspeople who work to bring these stories to life.
To start off this new series, I recently sat down with Bridge of Spies Production Designer Adam Stockhausen. Unlike most interviews where it’s focused on one film, I used my time with him to talk about the job as a whole and what goes on behind-the-scenes. If you’re interested in what it’s really like to be a production designer on a big movie, you’re going to love the conversation. As usual I’ve listed what we talked about below the video.
