For the First Time (1959 film)
For the First Time is tenor star Mario Lanza's final film, released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1959.
Filmed on location in 1958 in Capri, Salzburg, Berlin and at the Rome Opera House, the film told the sentimental story of an operatic tenor (Tony Costa) who finds love for the first time with a young German woman (played by Johanna von Koczian), who happens to be deaf.
The film was directed by Rudolph Mate, and featured Kurt Kasznar and Zsa Zsa Gabor in supporting roles. Critics singled out Lanza's singing of "Vesti la Giubba" from Pagliacci and the Death Scene from Otello for special praise, with Howard Thompson of The New York Times calling it the tenor's "most disarming vehicle in years."

"Come Prima" ("For The First Time") is the big hit song that came from the final film of Mario Lanza (also entitled "For The First Time"). This beautiful song, which has lyrics in both Italian and English - was recorded by many vocalists and orchestras (besides Mario Lanza on the film soundtrack). Tony Dallara had a big hit in Italy (which I believe was also released by Mercury in the U.S.), the Marino Marini Quartet, and the famous Domenico Modugno ("Volare") also released their own versions at the time. In this century, the young, talented singer Patrizio Buanne has recorded "Come Prima". The English language lyric was written by Buck Ram (manager of The Platters) and the version I remember the best is this one by the beautiful singer and actress, the late Polly Bergen. Polly recorded this in 1958 on Columbia Records (4-41275) with orchestra under the direction of Glenn Osser. Although most people remember Polly as a versatile actress ("Cape Fear", "The Caretakers", "Kisses For My President", "Move Over Darling") she actually started her career as a singer, first on RKO Unique, then Columbia. Her first big success was starring as Helen Morgan in a TV special. Polly also starred on Broadway in 1958 with Farley Granger and Hermoine Gingold in the failed musical "First Impressions". While I am not certain, my guess is that this recording of "Come Prima" was produced by Mitch Miller. For an American, Polly handles the Italian brilliantly!

This beautiful song, which has lyrics in both Italian and English - was recorded by many vocalists and orchestras (besides Mario Lanza on the film soundtrack). Tony Dallara had a big hit in Italy (which I believe was also released by Mercury in the U.S.), the Marino Marini Quartet, and the famous Domenico Modugno ("Volare") also released their own versions at the time. In this century, the young, talented singer Patrizio Buanne has recorded "Come Prima".
The English language lyric was written by Buck Ram (manager of The Platters) and the version I remember the best is this one by the beautiful singer and actress, the late Polly Bergen. Polly recorded this in 1958 on Columbia Records (4-41275) with orchestra under the direction of Glenn Osser.
Although most people remember Polly as a versatile actress ("Cape Fear", "The Caretakers", "Kisses For My President", "Move Over Darling") she actually started her career as a singer, first on RKO Unique, then Columbia. Her first big success was starring as Helen Morgan in a TV special. Polly also starred on Broadway in 1958 with Farley Granger and Hermoine Gingold in the failed musical "First Impressions". While I am not certain, my guess is that this recording of "Come Prima" was produced by Mitch Miller. For an American, Polly handles the Italian brilliantly!
