The World Bank on June 7, 2017 projected Ethiopia as the fastest growing economy in Africa. In a report, Global Economic Prospects: Sub-Saharan Africa, the bank predicted Ethiopia to be at 8.3 per cent followed by Ghana and Tanzania at 7.2 and 7.8 respectively.

Hivos Director of Operations Sanne Nolst Trenité toured a number of Hivos projects and partners in Indonesia at the end of April until early of May this year. For staff at Hivos Southeast Asia, her visit provided opportunities to meet her and discuss developments important to Hivos with her. Interaction, engagement, inspiration, acceleration and support were recurring themes throughout her visit.

The role of fresh fruits and vegetables in nutrition is well recognized and in recent years, Kenyan consumers have increasingly embraced healthy diet options, therefore consuming more of fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain micronutrients, fibres and plant proteins which are important for daily diet, and therefore are integral to a diversified nutritious diet.

Cervical cancer is a cancer that arise from the cervix. It is due to an abnormal growth of cells that have the ability to invade or spread to other parts of the body (the cervix is the lower, narrow part of the uterus or the womb). Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) which can be passed on through any type of sexual contact.

In September 2015, Governments adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (commonly referred as the Sustainable Development Goals - SDGs) as a response to eradicate poverty. Each year, countries are encouraged to review their progress in implementation of the SDGs.

Hivos Southern Africa launched its Women Empowered for Leadership Programme (WE4L) in Zimbabwe on April 27, 2017 at its regional offices in Harare, Zimbabwe.  The launch was attended by women leaders from political, civil society and business sectors.

Hivos joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, commemorated annually on 23 May 2017. Obstetric fistula is a hole between the vagina and rectum or bladder that is caused by prolonged obstructed labor in the absence of timely and adequate medical care, leaving a woman incontinent (lacking voluntary control) of urine or faeces or both.

Hivos Southern Africa conducted a training on outcome harvesting targeted at partner organizations in the Women Empowered for Leadership project in Zimbabwe. Twenty participants underwent the training and expressed enthusiasm at learning how to effectively conduct outcome harvesting processes.

The Women Empowered for Leadership (WE4L) is a five-year programme running from 2016-2020 managed by Hivos and implemented together with local partners in, Jordan and Lebanon, Malawi Zambia, Zimbabwe,.

I made my way through the small alley that leads to their new office and workshop in Beirut. Clean white marble tiles, sparkling white walls and the smell of paint everywhere showed the place was clearly still under construction.
