On 16 April 2016, the Pacific coast of Ecuador was hit by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake, the strongest in decades, killing over 500 women, men and children. In collaboration with a number of UN partner agencies on the ground in Ecuador, UNV mobilized UN Volunteers with extensive experience in the field of emergency response and early recovery.

In response to the earthquake that hit Nepal on 2015, UNV swiftly mobilized and deployed UN Volunteers in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to undertake technical assessments of damaged structures and supervise cash-for-work brigades which cleared and recycled vast quantities of debris.
