Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff (Russian: Серге́й Васи́льевич Рахма́нинов;Russian pronunciation: [sʲɪrˈɡʲej rɐxˈmanʲɪnəf]; 1 April [O.S. 20 March] 1873 – 28 March 1943), was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. Rachmaninoff is widely considered one of the finest pianists of all time and, as a composer, one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music.
Early influences of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and other Russian composers gave way to a personal style notable for its song-like melodicism, expressiveness and his use of rich orchestral colors. The piano is featured prominently in Rachmaninoff's compositional output, and through his own skills as a performer he explored the expressive possibilities of the instrument.
The Rachmaninoff family, of Russian and distant Moldavian descent, was part of the Russian aristocracy, having been in the service of the Russian tsars since the 16th century, and had strong musical and military leanings. The composer's father, Vasily Arkadyevich Rachmaninoff (1841–1916), an amateur pianist and army officer, married Lyubov Petrovna Butakova (1853–1929), gained five estates as a dowry, and had three boys and three girls. Sergei was born on 1 April [O.S. 20 March] 1873 at the estate of Semyonovo, in Oneg, near Great Novgorod in north-western Russia.

At the time he still had a year of Conservatoire study ahead of him, during which his tasks would be to compose his first opera and his first symphony, these being Arensky’s conditions for accelerated graduation. The symphony would in fact be delayed several years, but Tchaikovsky’s support for the resulting opera (Aleko) led to publishing agreements and a rapid opening-up of professional opportunities....

The All-Night Vigil (Russian: Всенощное бдение, Vsenoshchnoe bdenie), Opus 37, is an a cappella choral composition by Sergei Rachmaninoff, written and premiered in 1915. It consists of settings of texts taken from the Russian Orthodox All-night vigil ceremony. It has been praised as Rachmaninoff's finest achievement and "the greatest musical achievement of the Russian Orthodox Church". It was one of Rachmaninoff's two favorite compositions along with The Bells, and the composer requested that one of its movements (the fifth) be sung at his funeral. The title of the work is often translated as simply Vespers, which is both literal...

It's not easy to think of a composer who was Chopin's match in writing miniatures, but Rachmaninoff at least comes very close. His preludes are marvels of textural innovation, harmonic imagination, gorgeous counterpoint (Rachmaninoff's brilliance at counterpoint is really not noticed often enough), and lyricism in all its forms -- bleak, sweeping, stark, doleful, lush. (Individual descriptions below.) Lugansky's performances are some of my favourites. I think of him as being for Rachmaninoff what Rubinstein was for Chopin. There's nothing bloated or forced about his style, and it manages to find a perfect middle ground between harsh, steely banginess (a bit easy too easy to slip into with Rachmaninoff) and saccharine melodrama. The melodies are clear, the counterpoint well-formed, the tem...

The russian pianist Boris Berezovsky performs this prelude op. 23 no. 5 in G minor by Sergueï Rachmaninov. Sergei Rachmaninoff completed his Prelude in G minor, Op. 23, No. 5 in 1901. It was included in his Opus 23 set of ten preludes despite having been written two years earlier than the other nine. It epitomizes Rachmaninoff's Russian nationalism, rich in full chords an evocative theme. Rachmaninoff himself premiered the piece in Moscow on February 10, 1903, along with Preludes No. 1 and 2 from Op. 23. The Prelude's taut structure is in ternary form, consisting of an opening "A" section with punctuated sixteenth-note chords (marked Alla marcia), a more lyrical and melancholy "B" section with sweeping arpeggios in the left hand (marked Poco meno mosso), a transition into the original te...

The Best of Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff (1 April [O.S. 20 March] 1873 -- 28 March 1943) Rachmaninoff is widely considered one of the finest pianists of his day and, as a composer, one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music.
