The barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) is the most widespread species of swallow in the world. It is a distinctive passerine bird with blue upperparts, a long, deeply forked tail and curved, pointed wings. It is found in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. In Anglophone Europe it is just called the swallow; in Northern Europe it is the only common species called a "swallow" rather than a "martin".
There are six subspecies of barn swallow, which breed across the Northern Hemisphere. Four are strongly migratory, and their wintering grounds cover much of the Southern Hemisphere as far south as central Argentina, the Cape Province of South Africa, and northern Australia. Its huge range means that the barn swallow is not endangered, although there may be local population declines due to specific threats.
The barn swallow is a bird of open country that normally uses man-made structures to breed and consequently has spread with human expansion. It builds a cup nest from mud pellets in barns or similar structures and feeds on insects caught in flight. This species lives in close association with humans, and its insect-eating habits mean that it is tolerated by man; this acceptance was reinforced in the past by superstitions regarding the bird and its nest. There are frequent cultural references to the barn swallow in literary and religious works due to both its living in close proximity to humans and its annual migration. The barn swallow is the national bird of Austria and Estonia.

MARS had great success with our many baby swallows this year. All but one thrived and were eventually released. They were a joy to care for and watch grow from little pink pin feathered helpless nestlings, to the beautiful, graceful fliers they became :)

Barn Swallows at the lower rhine region This is the story (it might be a true story about migration birds and those who would like to be one) about the barn swallows Addy and Monah (from South Africa) who met together at Salmorth (lower rhine region), felt in love and breeded at Schenkenschanz No. 6. They fed up their kids Flo, Rosh, Bianchi, Sabina and Marc and the chicks of the 2. breeding in August Twig, Othel, Fiffey and Mereiky. They all spent a lovely short time at Salmorth, before they altogether went back to South Africa. All the best to you guys. I set up a web cam as the Barn Swallows were building their nest but they got camera shy. Fortunately a pair of Finches has come along and we will still get to watch eggs and babies with any luck. The male has the red head and the female is brown.
Two barn swallows adopted WGMD's entry way last year. We've named them Del and Marva. They built a nest on our door camera. This spring they came back. A baffle was put up on the cam to keep them from building there - so the decided to build on top of our Knox Box! That nest was populated with several eggs, but our pest control people pulled the nest down (guess they thought the birds were pests!) We put the nest back in place - and after a couple of days the barn swallows returned - but then started to build a new nest on the baffle on the cam - back in their original spot. After several days of industrious building there was too much weight on the baffle and everything came crashing down. The swallows returned to the Knox Box nest - and now have 4 eggs that are being kept war...

The night that you first touched me
You shook me from my peace, then took me from a safe place
You took me from a safe place and you stole my heart's ease
You act like a mortician, presiding at a wake
I close the lid on passion
Knowing well what's at stake
Your love consumed me wholly
At times I could not breathe
I daren't love you solely
Always felt you might leave
I offered you my soul like a humble sacrifice
You put it under a glass
Then you put it
on ice, on ice, on ice,
on ice, on ice, on ice,
on ice, on ice, on ice
And now that love has burned me
I'm waiting by the pyre
I thought my eyes were open
When I started the fire
And then to pile on insult, after the injury
You said my soul was tarnished
How you rubbed off on me!
Well now that all's been done and
We've had our last farewell
I'm burning all your letters, watching them all
burn slow, burn slow,
burn slow, burn slow,
