Militants have launched a bomb and gun attack on a mosque in Egypt's North Sinai province, killing 235 people, state media say.
Witnesses say the al-Rawda mosque in the town of Bir al-Abed, near al-Arish, was targeted during Friday prayers.
It is the deadliest attack of its kind since an Islamist insurgency in the peninsula was stepped up in 2013.
Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi vowed to respond with "brute force" after talks with security officials.
No group has yet claimed the attack, but militants affiliated with so-called Islamic State have been responsible for scores of deadly attacks in the province.
They usually target security forces and Christian churches.

Their massive scale reflects the unique role that the pharaoh, or king, played in ancient Egyptian society. Though pyramids were built from the beginning of the Old Kingdom to the close of the Ptolemaic period in the fourth century A.D., the peak of pyramid building began with the late third dynasty and continued until roughly the sixth (c. 2325 B.C.). More than 4,000 years later, the Egyptian pyramids still retain much of their majesty, providing a glimpse into the country’s rich and glorious past.
During the third and fourth dynasties of the Old Kingdom, Egypt enjoyed tremendous economic prosperity and stability. Kings held a unique position in Egyptian society. Somewhere in between human and divine, they were believed to have been chosen by the gods to serve as mediators between them and the people on earth. Because of this, it was in everyone’s interest to keep the king’s majesty intact even after his death, when he was believed to become Osiris, god of the dead. The new pharaoh, in turn, became Horus, the falcon-god who served as protector of the sun-god, Ra.
The pyramid's smooth, angled sides symbolized the rays of the sun and were designed to help the king's soul ascend to heaven and join the gods, particularly the sun god Ra.
Ancient Egyptians believed that when the king died, part of his spirit (known as “ka”) remained with his body. To properly care for his spirit, the corpse was mummified, and everything the king would need in the afterlife was buried with him, including gold vessels, food, furniture and other offerings. The pyramids became the focus of a cult of the dead king that was supposed to continue well after his death. Their riches would provide not only for him, but also for the relatives, officials and priests who were buried near him.
No pyramids are more celebrated than the Great Pyramids of Giza, located on a plateau on the west bank of the Nile River, on the outskirts of modern-day Cairo. The oldest and largest of the three pyramids at Giza, known as the Great Pyramid, is the only surviving structure out of the famed seven wonders of the ancient world. It was built for Khufu (Cheops, in Greek), Sneferu’s successor and the second of the eight kings of the fourth dynasty. Though Khufu reigned for 23 years (2589-2566 B.C.), relatively little is known of his reign beyond the grandeur of his pyramid. The sides of the pyramid’s base average 755.75 feet (230 meters), and its original height was 481.4 feet (147 meters), making it the largest pyramid in the world. Three small pyramids built for Khufu’s queens are lined up next to the Great Pyramid, and a tomb was found nearby containing the empty sarcophagus of his mother, Queen Hetepheres. Like other pyramids, Khufu’s is surrounded by rows of mastabas, where relatives or officials of the king were buried to accompany and support him in the afterlife.

Many people believe that the key to understanding human civilization and history is hidden in the Hall of Records. There are a number of references to this mysterious hall, which has possibly been rediscovered buried in Egypt, one possibility including the undergrounds of the enigmatic Sphinx of Giza, which oversees the Giza Pyramids. Providing this huge underground library has been discovered, it could change history and the origin of the Ancient Egyptian Civilization forever.
It is believed that the Hall of Records not only holds the history of the Ancient Egyptians recorded on ancient papyrus scrolls, but also the history and the location of the lost continent of Atlantis. The Egyptian Hall of Records has the same significance as the Great Library of Alexandria, which holds the history of the ancient Greek civilization.
Writer and explorer Andrew Collins has become a prominent force in uncovering evidence of lost cave systems at the Giza Plateau in Egypt, as written about in his book Beneath the Pyramids. This cave underworld was lost for nearly 200 years and explored again for the first time in 2008 by a team working with Andrew. He recounts the breathtaking rediscovery of Giza’s lost world while revealing that the pyramids were designed to reflect the influence of the Cygnus constellation, the source of powerful cosmic rays that might well have affected human evolution in the past and could well prove to be the key to understanding the current rise in human consciousness.

Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egypt was a civilization of ancient Northeastern Africa, concentrated along the lower reaches of the Nile River in what is now the modern country of Egypt. It is one of six civilizations globally to arise independently. Egyptian civilization coalesced around 3150 BC (according to conventional Egyptian chronology) with the political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under the first pharaoh. The history of ancient Egypt occurred in a series of stable Kingdoms, separated by periods of relative instability known as Intermediate Periods: the Old Kingdom of the Early Bronze Age, the Middle Kingdom of the Middle Bronze Age and the New Kingdom of the Late Bronze Age.
Egypt reached the pinnacle of its power during the New Kingdom, in the Ramesside period where it rivalled the Hittite Empire, Assyrian Empire and Mitanni Empire, after which it entered a period of slow decline. Egypt was invaded or conquered by a succession of foreign powers, such as the Canaanites/Hyksos, Libyans, the Nubians, the Assyrians, Babylonians, the Achaemenid Persians, and the Macedonians in the Third Intermediate Period and the Late Period of Egypt. In the aftermath of Alexander the Great's death, one of his generals, Ptolemy Soter, established himself as the new ruler of Egypt. This Greek Ptolemaic Kingdom ruled Egypt until 30 BC, when, under Cleopatra, it fell to the Roman Empire and became a Roman province.

Hall of Records
Hall of Records is a mythical library buried somewhere in Egypt. One suggestion has been that it is under the Great Sphinx of Giza, which is in the Giza pyramid complex. It is rumoured to house the knowledge of the Egyptians by papyrus scrolls and history of the lost continent of Atlantis, much as the Great Library of Alexandria housed Grecian knowledge. There is little evidence to indicate that the Hall actually exists; however, some scientists (such as Robert Schoch with Dr. Thomas L. Dobecki) have used ground-penetrating radar and it has shown there are in fact cavities underneath the Great Sphinx.
Description
The mythology of the Hall of Records is a popular one among those who hold alternative theories of Ancient Egypt. The phrase "Hall of Records" originated with Edgar Cayce although Lynn Picknett and Clive Prince suggest that the idea of the existence of lost Egyptian records "has a long pedigree".
Graham Hancock and Robert Bauval, in "Message of the Sphinx" stated that American archaeologists and the Egyptian government had blocked investigations around the Sphinx, including attempts to locate any underground cavities. Bauval later wrote Secret Chamber in 1999. According to Bauval's research, Egyptian authorities granted an American team a license to search for the Hall of Records under the Sphinx. It has been postulated that there may be three passages around the Sphinx; two with unknown origin and one is supposedly a small dead-end shaft behind the head of nineteenth-century origins. Also, little holes in the body of the Sphinx may be related to its construction, but this is unknown.

Ancient history
Ancient history is the aggregate of past events from the beginning of recorded human history and extending as far as the Early Middle Ages or the Postclassical Era. The span of recorded history is roughly 5,000 years, beginning with Sumerian Cuneiform script, the oldest discovered form of coherent writing from the protoliterate period around the 30th century BC.
The term classical antiquity is often used to refer to history in the Old World from the beginning of recorded Greek history in 776 BC (First Olympiad). This roughly coincides with the traditional date of the founding of Rome in 753 BC, the beginning of the history of ancient Rome, and the beginning of the Archaic period in Ancient Greece. Although the ending date of ancient history is disputed, some Western scholars use the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD (the most used), the closure of the Platonic Academy in 529 AD, the death of the emperor Justinian I in 565 AD, the coming of Islam or the rise of Charlemagne as the end of ancient and Classical European history.

While the world was distracted by the dramatic scenes of chaos upon the streets above, deep within the ancient, dusty tunnels, a team of archaeologists led by Susanne Bickel of the University of Basel in Switzerland, was quietly making one of the most significant discoveries of the past century. They had initially found the top of large round stone at the eastern end of the valley of the kings. The archaeologists suspected that it was just the top of an abandoned shaft. But before they could investigate,, due to Egypt’s political process regarding finds within the valley, they had to cover the stone rim with their own locked iron door, inform the Egyptian authorities, and apply for an official permit to excavate. A year later, after gaining approval to excavate, Bickel returned with a team of two dozen people, including field director Elina Paulin-Grothe of the University of Basel, Egyptian inspector Ali Reda, and local workmen. each took turns lying on the ground, head pressed against the shaft wall, one arm through a small hole next to the cap stone snapping photographs. They left little doubt it was indeed am ancient tomb. On top of the debris rested a dusty black coffin carved from sycamore wood and decorated with large yellow hieroglyphs on its sides and top. Bickel has stated that she has never seen an Egyptian coffin in such a good condition before,” The dating of fragments of pottery made from Nile silt and pieces of plaster, commonly used to seal tomb entrances in ancient times, together with the age of other nearby sites, have indicated that the tomb could be more than 3 thousand years old. The hieroglyphs describe the tomb’s occupant as being named Nehemes-Bastet, Egyptologists currently believe she was a lady of the upper class and of Amun. People have been claiming there was nothing new left to find in the Valley of the Kings for almost as long as they have been digging there. The Venetian antiquarian Giovanni Belzoni believed he had emptied the last of the valley’s tombs during his 1817 expedition. While Theodore Davis, who excavated there a century later, came to a similar conclusion right before Tutankhamun’s burial chamber was found. Fortunately, there is a growing number of people who are beginning to suspect that there is a wealth of discoveries still left to be made in the valley of the kings, the Nile delta, and Egypt as a whole, and thanks to discoveries such as these, interest in these existing mysteries grows by the day. “It’s interesting to see that in this period, even a wealthy girl was buried with quite simple things,” Bickel says, comparing Nehemes-Bastet’s coffin and stele with the elaborate pottery, furniture, and food found in earlier tombs. “Her wooden coffin was certainly quite expensive,” she says, but nonetheless, it lacked the elaborate inner coffins found in similar burials. Is this the burial chamber of an extremely ancient queen? After reinforcing the coffin and securing the mummy, Bickel’s team have transported it across the Nile to Luxor, where a full investigation is currently being undertaken into the true identity of the mystery female. With substantial insight into the controversial finds within ancient Egypt, we personally suspect that often the tombs which appear the most crudely designed, containing wooden sarcophagus are generally found to be the most ancient, furthermore, their hieroglyphic writings were often far more exquisite in nature. Could this be the discovery of an original burial? And the crude hieroglyphic claim of the occupant’s identity a fake? Hiding the deltas true antiquity? A secret many fringe scientists have begun to believe is being protected by Egyptian antiquities. Many have come to suspect the Egyptians merely copied the original builders of the pyramids, after taking occupation of their structures many years later. Supportive evidence for these claims come in many forms: erosion upon the pyramids and especially the sphinx, including over 100 underground chambers, we are currently researching, discovered under giza In 1995, by a team led by Kent Weeks, which also show strong evidence of several flash flooding events involving sea water throughout their long existence. The lack of any written detail pertaining to the construction of either monument in any hieroglyphs found in ancient Egypt. Plot: Sarny, a 12-year-old slave girl in the ante-bellum South, faces a relatively hopeless life. Her chief duties at the plantation of Clel Waller are serving at table, spitting tobacco juice on roses to prevent bugs, and secretly conveying intimate messages between Waller's wife, Callie, and Dr. Chamberlaine. Then Nightjohn arrives. A former runaway slave who bears telltale scars on his back, he takes Sarny under his wing and, in exchange for a pinch of tobacco, secretly begins to teach her to read and write, a crime punishable by death. "Words," he says, "are freedom. Slavery is made of words: laws, deeds and passes." He starts by drawing letters in the dirt and cautions her that no one must know. At her baptism, Sarny steals a Bible that belongs to Waller's son, Jeffrey, and practices reading by lantern-light in the slave quarters. The same Bible serves another purpose when, on a blank page taken from it, Nightjohn forges a pass for Outlaw, a young slave, to use in escaping to freedom in the North with his beloved Egypt, a slave on another plantation. Waller finds the Bible and demands to know who stole it. Delie, who cared for Sarny as a child, fears for her now and accepts the blame. But Nightjohn forestalls the lashing Delie is to receive, saying he's the one, for he can read. He tries to run away but is caught, and his hand is tied to a chopping block. With an ax, Waller delivers the severing blow, exacting the brutal penalty for Nightjohn's literacy. As he is dragged off to be sold, he tells Sarny, "When they cut off one hand, the other hand grows stronger." That night Sarny writes a pass for Egypt that will let her join Outlaw on the flight to freedom. Two days later their escape is discovered and the false passes found. Waller knows Nightjohn wrote Outlaw's pass. But who wrote the second? He interrupts a church service to demand the answer, threatening to kill all his slaves if no one tells. Sarny confesses, but declares he'll kill no one, for the slaves represent his wealth. As Waller raises his rifle, Sarny implores Callie to speak up for her, hinting that she has read the messages to Dr. Chamberlaine. Callie refuses, but the doctor, fearful Sarny will reveal the relationship, says he's at fault. He tells of teaching Egypt some reading and writing, but now declares it was a mistake. Callie orders that Sarny be sold, and as the girl is joined to a line of other slaves, she asks if any of them have tobacco to trade. What has she to give in return? they want to know. And Sarny draws an A in the dirt.

Militants have launched a bomb and gun attack on a mosque in Egypt's North Sinai province, killing 235 people, state media say. Witnesses say the al-Rawda mosque in the town of Bir al-Abed, near al-Arish, was targeted during Friday prayers. It is the deadliest attack of its kind since an Islamist insurgency in the peninsula was stepped up in 2013. Militants have launched a bomb and gun attack on a mosque in Egypt's North Sinai province, killing 235 people, state media say.
Witnesses say the al-Rawda mosque in the town of Bir al-Abed, near al-Arish, was targeted during Friday prayers.
It is the deadliest attack of its kind since an Islamist insurgency in the peninsula was stepped up in 2013.
Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi vowed to respond with "brute force" after talks with security officials.
No group has yet claimed the attack, but militants affiliated with so-called Islamic State have been responsible for scores of deadly attacks in the province.
They usually target security forces and Christian churches.

Though pyramids were built from the beginning of the Old Kingdom to the close of the Ptolemaic period in the fourth century A.D., the peak of pyramid building began with the late third dynasty and continued until roughly the sixth (c. 2325 B.C.). More than 4,000 years later, the Egyptian pyramids still retain much of their majesty, providing a glimpse into the country’s rich and glorious past.
During the third and fourth dynasties of the Old Kingdom, Egypt enjoyed tremendous economic prosperity and stability. Kings held a unique position in Egyptian society. Somewhere in between human and divine, they were believed to have been chosen by the gods to serve as mediators between them and the people on earth. Because of this, it was in everyone’s interest to keep the king’s majesty intact even after his death, when he was believed to become Osiris, god of the dead. The new pharaoh, in turn, became Horus, the falcon-god who served as protector of the sun-god, Ra.
The pyramid's smooth, angled sides symbolized the rays of the sun and were designed to help the king's soul ascend to heaven and join the gods, particularly the sun god Ra.
Ancient Egyptians believed that when the king died, part of his spirit (known as “ka”) remained with his body. To properly care for his spirit, the corpse was mummified, and everything the king would need in the afterlife was buried with him, including gold vessels, food, furniture and other offerings. The pyramids became the focus of a cult of the dead king that was supposed to continue well after his death. Their riches would provide not only for him, but also for the relatives, officials and priests who were buried near him.
No pyramids are more celebrated than the Great Pyramids of Giza, located on a plateau on the west bank of the Nile River, on the outskirts of modern-day Cairo. The oldest and largest of the three pyramids at Giza, known as the Great Pyramid, is the only surviving structure out of the famed seven wonders of the ancient world. It was built for Khufu (Cheops, in Greek), Sneferu’s successor and the second of the eight kings of the fourth dynasty. Though Khufu reigned for 23 years (2589-2566 B.C.), relatively little is known of his reign beyond the grandeur of his pyramid. The sides of the pyramid’s base average 755.75 feet (230 meters), and its original height was 481.4 feet (147 meters), making it the largest pyramid in the world. Three small pyramids built for Khufu’s queens are lined up next to the Great Pyramid, and a tomb was found nearby containing the empty sarcophagus of his mother, Queen Hetepheres. There are a number of references to this mysterious hall, which has possibly been rediscovered buried in Egypt, one possibility including the undergrounds of the enigmatic Sphinx of Giza, which oversees the Giza Pyramids. Providing this huge underground library has been discovered, it could change history and the origin of the Ancient Egyptian Civilization forever.
It is believed that the Hall of Records not only holds the history of the Ancient Egyptians recorded on ancient papyrus scrolls, but also the history and the location of the lost continent of Atlantis. The Egyptian Hall of Records has the same significance as the Great Library of Alexandria, which holds the history of the ancient Greek civilization.

Historian, Joann Fletcher explores the hitherto downplayed role that women took in the running of state and, indeed, in shaping every aspect of life in Ancient Egypt. On the 25th of January 2011, the streets of Cairo were being ravaged by a rioting population, demanding the end of President Hosni Mubarak’s 30 year regime.
While the world was distracted by the dramatic scenes of chaos upon the streets above, deep within the ancient, dusty tunnels, a team of archaeologists led by Susanne Bickel of the University of Basel in Switzerland, was quietly making one of the most significant discoveries of the past century.
They had initially found the top of large round stone at the eastern end of the valley of the kings.
The archaeologists suspected that it was just the top of an abandoned shaft. But before they could investigate,, due to Egypt’s political process regarding finds within the valley, they had to cover the stone rim with their own locked iron door, inform the Egyptian authorities, and apply for an official permit to excavate.
A year later, after gaining approval to excavate, Bickel returned with a team of two dozen people, including field director Elina Paulin-Grothe of the University of Basel, Egyptian inspector Ali Reda, and local workmen.
each took turns lying on the ground, head pressed against the shaft wall, one arm through a small hole next to the cap stone snapping photographs.
They left little doubt it was indeed am ancient tomb. On top of the debris rested a dusty black coffin carved from sycamore wood and decorated with large yellow hieroglyphs on its sides and top. Bickel has stated that she has never seen an Egyptian coffin in such a good condition before,”
The dating of fragments of pottery made from Nile silt and pieces of plaster, commonly used to seal tomb entrances in ancient times, together with the age of other nearby sites, have indicated that the tomb could be more than 3 thousand years old.
The hieroglyphs describe the tomb’s occupant as being named Nehemes-Bastet, Egyptologists currently believe she was a lady of the upper class and of Amun.
People have been claiming there was nothing new left to find in the Valley of the Kings for almost as long as they have been digging there. The Venetian antiquarian Giovanni Belzoni believed he had emptied the last of the valley’s tombs during his 1817 expedition. While Theodore Davis, who excavated there a century later, came to a similar conclusion right before Tutankhamun’s burial chamber was found.
Fortunately, there is a growing number of people who are beginning to suspect that there is a wealth of discoveries still left to be made in the valley of the kings, the Nile delta, and Egypt as a whole, and thanks to discoveries such as these, interest in these existing mysteries grows by the day.
“It’s interesting to see that in this period, even a wealthy girl was buried with quite simple things,” Bickel says, comparing Nehemes-Bastet’s coffin and stele with the elaborate pottery, furniture, and food found in earlier tombs.
“Her wooden coffin was certainly quite expensive,” she says, but nonetheless, it lacked the elaborate inner coffins found in similar burials.
Is this the burial chamber of an extremely ancient queen? After reinforcing the coffin and securing the mummy, Bickel’s team have transported it across the Nile to Luxor, where a full investigation is currently being undertaken into the true identity of the mystery female.
With substantial insight into the controversial finds within ancient Egypt, we personally suspect that often the tombs which appear the most crudely designed, containing wooden sarcophagus are generally found to be the most ancient, furthermore, their hieroglyphic writings were often far more exquisite in nature.
Could this be the discovery of an original burial? And the crude hieroglyphic claim of the occupant’s identity a fake?
Hiding the deltas true antiquity?
A secret many fringe scientists have begun to believe is being protected by Egyptian antiquities.
Many have come to suspect the Egyptians merely copied the original builders of the pyramids, after taking occupation of their structures many years later.
Supportive evidence for these claims come in many forms: erosion upon the pyramids and especially the sphinx, including over 100 underground chambers, we are currently researching, discovered under giza In 1995, by a team led by Kent Weeks, which also show strong evidence of several flash flooding events involving sea water throughout their long existence. The lack of any written detail pertaining to the construction of either monument in any hieroglyphs found in ancient Egypt. And so on,
We will continue to do research on Nehemes-Bastet, and will endeavour to keep you all informed regarding any notable findings.

Built in 1900, each day the Egypt Museum attracts thousands of visitors who come to experience for themselves the legendary treasures of ancient history that comprise more than 120,000 different objects from 4500 years of Egyptian history, including the unique Tut-Ench-Amun exhibition. In 1830, King Mohammed Ali had a mosque built and named it after himself but it is now more commonly known as the Alabaster Mosque. It was 18 years in construction and was built on the site of a former Mamluk Palace.

Though pyramids were built from the beginning of the Old Kingdom to the close of the Ptolemaic period in the fourth century A.D., the peak of pyramid building began with the late third dynasty and continued until roughly the sixth (c. 2325 B.C.). The pyramid's smooth, angled sides symbolized the rays of the sun and were designed to help the king's soul ascend to heaven and join the gods, particularly the sun god Ra.
Ancient Egyptians believed that when the king died, part of his spirit (known as “ka”) remained with his body. To properly care for his spirit, the corpse was mummified, and everything the king would need in the afterlife was buried with him, including gold vessels, food, furniture and other offerings. The pyramids became the focus of a cult of the dead king that was supposed to continue well after his death. Their riches would provide not only for him, but also for the relatives, officials and priests who were buried near him.
No pyramids are more celebrated than the Great Pyramids of Giza, located on a plateau on the west bank of the Nile River, on the outskirts of modern-day Cairo. The oldest and largest of the three pyramids at Giza, known as the Great Pyramid, is the only surviving structure out of the famed seven wonders of the ancient world. It was built for Khufu (Cheops, in Greek), Sneferu’s successor and the second of the eight kings of the fourth dynasty. Though Khufu reigned for 23 years (2589-2566 B.C.), relatively little is known of his reign beyond the grandeur of his pyramid. The sides of the pyramid’s base average 755.75 feet (230 meters), and its original height was 481.4 feet (147 meters), making it the largest pyramid in the world. There are a number of references to this mysterious hall, which has possibly been rediscovered buried in Egypt, one possibility including the undergrounds of the enigmatic Sphinx of Giza, which oversees the Giza Pyramids. Providing this huge underground library has been discovered, it could change history and the origin of the Ancient Egyptian Civilization forever.
It is believed that the Hall of Records not only holds the history of the Ancient Egyptians recorded on ancient papyrus scrolls, but also the history and the location of the lost continent of Atlantis. The Egyptian Hall of Records has the same significance as the Great Library of Alexandria, which holds the history of the ancient Greek civilization.
Writer and explorer Andrew Collins has become a prominent force in uncovering evidence of lost cave systems at the Giza Plateau in Egypt, as written about in his book Beneath the Pyramids. This cave underworld was lost for nearly 200 years and explored again for the first time in 2008 by a team working with Andrew. When archeologists discovered a sealed door within the Great Pyramid of Giza--a door left unopened for 4,500 years, discovery revealed that more than just tombs, the pyramids were created to serve as a gateway to the stars; in the process, they uncovered what they believe to be the key to the plan that governed the construction of the great pyramids: the Orion Constellation.
This documentary begins with the ground breaking discovery that the three great pyramids of Egypt mirror the size and arrangement of the three stars in Orion's belt, it advocates looking at ancient civilizations with an astronomer's eye to explain those civilizations' behavior. Ancient civilizations are older than once thought, these advanced civilizations are more sophisticated than we once thought, what seemed like crackpot ideas are now common knowledge, the dedicated amateur often sees things the "expert" can't, and ancient civilizations were far more mobile than we once gave them credit for.

Menes, the founding king of the First Dynasty and the first pharaoh to unify Upper and Lower Egypt into one kingdom, oversaw the construction of the world's first dam, a massive, 50-foot-high wall that protected Egypt's capital Memphis from the Nile's ravaging flood waters.
An enterprising young pharaoh named Djoser, in 2668 B.C. commissioned a colossal burial tomb which would become the first stone building ever erected on Earth, and the first of Egypt's 100 pyramids.
Pharaoh Snefru, who married his half-sister in an effort to solidify his claim to the throne, was a benevolent leader but a brutal warrior who looted neighboring kingdoms to finance his architectural ambitions. Through a series of trials and catastrophic errors, he elevated the art of pyramid building to a new level.
Snefru's son Khufu built on his father's engineering experience to create the biggest and most perfect pyramid ever constructed: the Great Pyramid at Giza. Each of the building's four 700-foot sides was almost perfectly symmetrical, and each corner of the pyramid was level within fractions of an inch.
Essentially inventing military architecture, Pharaoh Sesostris III, the great warrior, conquered gold-rich Nubia with the help of a network of 17 vast and sophisticated fortresses stretching hundreds of miles into enemy territory.
The rebel pharaoh Akhenaten (father of Tutankhamen) who, based on a religious vision, moved Egypt's capital to a barren patch of desert virtually overnight-requiring his engineers to develop far faster building techniques. Within two years, the bustling city housed 20,000 people.
Ramesses II, who fathered more than 100 children, combined engineering and ego on an unprecedented scale to build two temples at Abu Simbel, one for himself and one for his beloved queen, Nefertari. Carved out of the face of a virgin cliff, Ramesses' monument was adorned by 69-foot solid rock statues and a lavishly decorated sanctuary built 200 feet inside the mountain.
