They tend to keep to themselves, so most of us don’t know much about the Amish. We know that they wear out-of-date clothing, and drive horses and buggies - but that’s about it. Today we are going to let you in on some hidden secrets that Amish families would prefer to keep to themselves. You may have heard about the tradition known as rumspringa, since it’s generally portrayed in pop culture as a form of Amish spring break. However, the reality is far less tantalizing than you might think, and occasionally involves some drunken buggy driving. Different Amish settlements follow different sets of rules, which are called Ordnung. Some of the rules are universal, while others vary and control everything from what you wear to whether or not the settlement has a vehicle. Amish children do have their own schools, but they only go up to the eighth grade, meaning that all of their teachers only have an eighth grade education themselves. Courtship tends to be a quick affair in Amish culture. One day an Amish boy gives a girl a buggy ride home, and the next thing you know her parents are bundling them up to for bed, literally. Having your parents tuck you in when you’re no longer a child is awkward, but having them also tuck in your boyfriend and then place a board between the two of you is something else! You might be surprised to learn that not all Amish completely shun technology on principle, and they come up with some rather ingenious ways to get power while staying off the grid.

The following are things that the real Amish do and don't:
1. Will never proselytize.
2. Never appear on camera
3. Do not believe in a direct way to heaven such as born again Christians, who believe that just being "saved" and reading the Bible a certain way gets you into Heaven. Amish believe only God can judge whether you make it to Heaven.
4. Amish read German Bibles and most Amish church service is in German.
5. Amish church service is held bi-weekly in the home of a fellow Amish.
6. Amish singing lacks instruments and sounds more like Gregorian chants than Southern Baptist revival music. Usually, the traditional songs are in German. There are actually several Amish songs available on Youtube if you search "Amish wedding songs".
7. Amish will interact with other people if their careers depend on it, but Amish enjoy privacy and strict obedience to the rules of the Ordnung. If you see an Amish person appearing on a TV show, especially programs like "Amish Mafia or "Breaking Amish" you can be sure they're no longer Amish (if they ever were).

Reality television cameras have shed a light on the secretive world of the Amish. That doesn’t mean we know everything about this interesting community. But, the things we have learned are completely surprising. These are ten unexpected facts about the Amish that will make your skin crawl.
The Amish don’t like to be told what to do by the outside world. Because of this, they are less likely to follow English laws. There are several instances of unreported crimes being covered up, and there is even an epidemic of teenagers driving their buggies under the influence. But, you’ll have to check out the video to see how law enforcement chooses to deal with these cases.
Because of the small size of many Amish communities, dating within its confines get a little tough. Since they aren’t allowed to marry anyone outside their religion, they are limited to a small group of people. Many times this results in congenital disabilities and genetic disorders in their babies because they are essentially reproducing with other members of their family.
When you think about Amish people, you probably think they are healthy because of all the hard work they do. But, because of soaring land prices, many men are leaving the farm and getting factory jobs outside the Amish community. This is leading to large waistlines and heart disease in the Amish population. And, when you see their diets, you’ll know why.

Took a trip back to Amish Country. I spent 2 years of my life in Virginia living with the Amish.
One reason I come out here is to get out of the city. Where there are fewer people. It makes it easier to think. Sometimes you just need to disconnect from the world.
You have to be the Master Architect of your life, You have to be able to pull away from the distractions of the modern world (technology, the internet, and phones) and just think.
You can't just live in your life. You have to work on your life.

For a group that doesn't believe in watching television, the likeness of the Amish -- and some Amish people themselves -- has been featured on many a program.
Still, there exist a lot of gaps in the story. Here are 10 things you may not know about the Amish.
Number 10. They have their own language. It's called Pennsylvania Dutch, and is called such due to the large number of Amish people living in the namesake state. The tongue is a combination of Dutch, English, and German.
Number 9. Riding in cars is fine. Owning, driving, or even having one within the confines of the community is what's forbidden.
Number 8. School attendance past the 8th grade is rare. Based on the 1972 Supreme Court ruling in Wisconsin vs. Yoder, the Amish are given an exception to regular US truancy laws on the basis of religious freedom.
Number 7. The Amish are not a cult. Their religion is of the Christian variety. One unique aspect is that they practice adult baptism. They also don't engage in evangelism.
Number 6. Beard growing doesn't start until after marriage. Marriage doesn't happen until the person's been baptized.
Number 5. The Amish don't go to church. Rather, they have community Sunday services in their own homes. On average, each family hosts once a year. Bigger communities get broken down into smaller, more manageable districts.
Number 4. Amish brides make their own dresses. That it be blue is required by some groups, but others leave the color option open. After the wedding day, the woman wears the dress for Sunday services and is eventually buried in it.
Number 3. Some technology gets the green light. The decision about what can enter the community is based upon how good it will be for it. Regardless of what's adopted, it cannot require the use of the public energy grid. The sun and batteries are the preferred power sources.
Number 2. They believe modern medicine is acceptable. However, they don't believe in insurance. Any treatment or hospital care that is required is paid for by a community fund.
Number 1. The Amish pay taxes. All sorts of them, actually - property, income, sales, and so on. What they don't participate in is the Social Security system Their opposition to it is that they see it as a form of insurance, which, as mentioned, they don't do. It's their belief that as a community, it's their responsibility to care for one another.

The Amish (/ˈɑːmɪʃ/; Pennsylvania Dutch: Amisch, German: Amische) are a group of traditionalist Christian church fellowships, closely related to but distinct from Mennonite churches, with whom they share Swiss Anabaptist origins. The Amish are known for simple living, plain dress, and reluctance to adopt many conveniences of modern technology. The history of the Amish church began with a schism in Switzerland within a group of Swiss and Alsatian Anabaptists in 1693 led by Jakob Ammann. Those who followed Ammann became known as Amish.
In the early 18th century, many Amish and Mennonites immigrated to Pennsylvania for a variety of reasons. Today, the most traditional descendants of the Amish continue to speak Pennsylvania German, also known as "Pennsylvania Dutch," although a dialect of Swiss German is used by Old Order Amish in the Adams County, Indiana area. As of 2000, over 165,000 Old Order Amish live in the United States and about 1,500 live in Canada. A 2008 study suggested their numbers have increased to 227,000, and in 2010 a study suggested their population had grown by 10 percent in the past two years to 249,000, with increasing movement to the West. Unlike most Americans who have had a birthrate too low to maintain the population since the early 1970s, most of the Amish continue to have 6–7 children while benefiting from the major decrease in infant and maternal mortality in the 20th century. Between 1992 and 2013, the Amish population increased by 120%, while the US population increased by only 23%.

Breaking Amish
Breaking Amish is an American reality television series on the TLC television network that debuted September 9, 2012. The series revolves around five young Anabaptist adults (four Amish and one Mennonite) who move to New York City in order to experience a different life and decide whether to return to their communities or remain outside their communities and face potential ostracism by their family and friends. It follows the cast members as they experience life in New York and face new situations involving work, friendship, romance, and lifestyle, plus the drama that develops between cast members as they undergo various experiences.
The cast-members' move to New York City differs from Rumspringa, the rite of passage in which some 16-year-old Amish are allowed to experience the outside world and to decide whether or not they wish to remain with their home communities.
A news report on February 25, 2013, stated that TLC had ordered a second season of Breaking Amish. with the original cast.Breaking Amish: Brave New World is considered the second season by TLC.

Still, there exist a lot of gaps in the story. Here are 10 things you may not know about the Amish. Number 10. They have their own language. It's called Pennsylvania Dutch, and is called such due to the large number of Amish people living in the namesake state. The tongue is a combination of Dutch, English, and German. Number 9. Riding in cars is fine. Owning, driving, or even having one within the confines of the community is what's forbidden. Number 8. School attendance past the 8th grade is rare. Based on the 1972 Supreme Court ruling in Wisconsin vs. Yoder, the Amish are given an exception to regular US truancy laws on the basis of religious freedom. Number 7. The Amish are not a cult. Their religion is of the Christian variety. One unique aspect is that they practice adult baptism. They also don't engage in evangelism. Number 6. Beard growing doesn't start until after marriage. Marriage doesn't happen until the person's been baptized. Number 5. The Amish don't go to church. Rather, they have community Sunday services in their own homes. On average, each family hosts once a year. Bigger communities get broken down into smaller, more manageable districts. Number 4. Amish brides make their own dresses. That it be blue is required by some groups, but others leave the color option open. After the wedding day, the woman wears the dress for Sunday services and is eventually buried in it. Number 3. Some technology gets the green light. The decision about what can enter the community is based upon how good it will be for it. Regardless of what's adopted, it cannot require the use of the public energy grid. The sun and batteries are the preferred power sources. Number 2. They believe modern medicine is acceptable. However, they don't believe in insurance. Any treatment or hospital care that is required is paid for by a community fund. Number 1. The Amish pay taxes. All sorts of them, actually - property, income, sales, and so on. What they don't participate in is the Social Security system Their opposition to it is that they see it as a form of insurance, which, as mentioned, they don't do. Moses Gingerich may have been a reality TV star on "Amish in the City," but he chose to leave his Amish community soon after the show aired. Today we are going to let you in on some hidden secrets that Amish families would prefer to keep to themselves. You may have heard about the tradition known as rumspringa, since it’s generally portrayed in pop culture as a form of Amish spring break. However, the reality is far less tantalizing than you might think, and occasionally involves some drunken buggy driving. Different Amish settlements follow different sets of rules, which are called Ordnung. Some of the rules are universal, while others vary and control everything from what you wear to whether or not the settlement has a vehicle. Amish children do have their own schools, but they only go up to the eighth grade, meaning that all of their teachers only have an eighth grade education themselves. Courtship tends to be a quick affair in Amish culture. One day an Amish boy gives a girl a buggy ride home, and the next thing you know her parents are bundling them up to for bed, literally. Having your parents tuck you in when you’re no longer a child is awkward, but having them also tuck in your boyfriend and then place a board between the two of you is something else! You might be surprised to learn that not all Amish completely shun technology on principle, and they come up with some rather ingenious ways to get power while staying off the grid.

6. Amish singing lacks instruments and sounds more like Gregorian chants than Southern Baptist revival music. Usually, the traditional songs are in German. There are actually several Amish songs available on Youtube if you search "Amish wedding songs".
7. Amish will interact with other people if their careers depend on it, but Amish enjoy privacy and strict obedience to the rules of the Ordnung. The Amish don’t like to be told what to do by the outside world. Because of this, they are less likely to follow English laws. There are several instances of unreported crimes being covered up, and there is even an epidemic of teenagers driving their buggies under the influence. Because of the small size of many Amish communities, dating within its confines get a little tough. Since they aren’t allowed to marry anyone outside their religion, they are limited to a small group of people. Took a trip back to Amish Country. I spent 2 years of my life in Virginia living with the Amish.
One reason I come out here is to get out of the city. Where there are fewer people. It makes it easier to think. Sometimes you just need to disconnect from the world.
You have to be the Master Architect of your life, You have to be able to pull away from the distractions of the modern world (technology, the internet, and phones) and just think.
You can't just live in your life. You have to work on your life.

Still, there exist a lot of gaps in the story. Here are 10 things you may not know about the Amish.
Number 10. They have their own language. It's called Pennsylvania Dutch, and is called such due to the large number of Amish people living in the namesake state. The tongue is a combination of Dutch, English, and German.
Number 9. Riding in cars is fine. Owning, driving, or even having one within the confines of the community is what's forbidden.
Number 8. School attendance past the 8th grade is rare. Based on the 1972 Supreme Court ruling in Wisconsin vs. Yoder, the Amish are given an exception to regular US truancy laws on the basis of religious freedom.
Number 7. The Amish are not a cult. Their religion is of the Christian variety. One unique aspect is that they practice adult baptism. They also don't engage in evangelism.
Number 6. Beard growing doesn't start until after marriage. Marriage doesn't happen until the person's been baptized.
Number 5. The Amish don't go to church. Rather, they have community Sunday services in their own homes. On average, each family hosts once a year. Bigger communities get broken down into smaller, more manageable districts.
Number 4. Amish brides make their own dresses. That it be blue is required by some groups, but others leave the color option open. After the wedding day, the woman wears the dress for Sunday services and is eventually buried in it.
Number 3. Some technology gets the green light. The decision about what can enter the community is based upon how good it will be for it. Regardless of what's adopted, it cannot require the use of the public energy grid. The sun and batteries are the preferred power sources.
Number 2. They believe modern medicine is acceptable. However, they don't believe in insurance. Any treatment or hospital care that is required is paid for by a community fund.
Number 1. The Amish pay taxes. All sorts of them, actually - property, income, sales, and so on. What they don't participate in is the Social Security system Their opposition to it is that they see it as a form of insurance, which, as mentioned, they don't do. It's their belief that as a community, it's their responsibility to care for one another.

Living a life of seclusion means they don’t have access to a lot of things we’re all used to; like televisions, restaurants, and shopping malls. With a lifestyle that’s centered around the Bible and their faith, the Amish have many rules that may surprise you, and a lot of them have to do with the women in their communities. In this video, we’ll show you the things Amish women could never get away with, like getting dressed up in fancy clothes, going to college, surfing the Internet, and more. This is: 10 Things You CAN Do That Amish Women CAN’T.
While in a relationship, many women can’t wait to bond with their boyfriends by cuddling. But this type of physical interaction is a big no-no for unmarried Amish women. Instead, they’re able to maintain pre-marital intimacy by engaging in a traditional ritual called “bundling.” It includes a bed and a wooden plank, and we’ll tell you all about it in our video!
Once an Amish woman gets engaged, she’s not able to go out and buy a fancy wedding gown like other brides. Instead, the women have to hand sew their own gowns. After their wedding day, the gown isn’t shoved into the back of their closet either. We’ll tell you the traditional use of their wedding dresses and just how long they’re expected to wear it after they say “I do.” We’ll also be sharing why Amish women don’t have jobs, don’t take selfies, wear jewelry, or make family decisions. If you are afraid of dolls, you are not ready to see what the Amish use as toys. Most of their dolls don’t have any faces. That’s because a graven image of a human is forbidden by the Bible. Amish Sawing a big Maple log!! Sawing logs is what they do and this log is a little bit bigger than what they usually cut...that’s what makes the video a little more interesting!! Finally got a video of Amish sawing up the log that Mike cut a little while back!! Sawing up this huge maple was not an easy task!! The boys did an Awesome job of turning it into fine boards! This mill is run by a 150 HP Perkins Diesel! Seeing this mill was a blast for me, especially with this mighty big log!! I did have to cut it twice with the Husqvarna 576 XP G!! After that the boys were able to saw it up!! This isn't no wood mizer!! This big log can't stop the guys from getting the job done. Sawing timber is there specialty. Man can these boys work!!
