Q&A is a weekly replacement for Booknotes.
This — the Q&A — is my introduction to Chernow as a person. I was surprised at his erudite bearing, with a well-composed manner almost reminiscent of James Lipton. It was obvious that Chernow is quite comfortable in this medium which makes him very easy to listen to.
I had to laugh and respond to the monitor when I heard this quote:
Chernow: “I wanted to write about those things Gant did not want to talk about particularly his lifelong struggle with alcohol”
Me: CHECK — covered that one, pardner!
For anyone who has not read 10 pages of the book, let’s just say that the topic of Grant’s drinking is covered ad nauseum.
I found myself definitely being drawn into the discussion, actually feeling a sadness and discomfort when Chernow recounts the last, agonizing days of Grant’s life, as he finished the Memoirs. A story in itself worthy of a Greek Tragedy.
All in all, the interview comes across as an after-dinner discussion in a living room – one that we were fortunate enough to sit in on.
Would be interested in hearing your take on the Chernow book.
Man, has this blog ever died. I wonder why?
