ABS-CBN

ABS-CBN (an initialism of the network's former name, Alto Broadcasting System - Chronicle Broadcasting Network) is a Filipino commercial broadcast television network that is the flagship property of ABS-CBN Corporation, a company under Lopez Group. The network is headquartered at the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Center in Quezon City, with additional major offices and production facilities in over 25 major cities including Iloilo, Cebu, and Davao. ABS-CBN is formally referred to as "The Kapamilya Network", a Filipino word which means a member of a family, and was originally introduced in 2003 during the celebration of the 50th year anniversary of television in the Philippines. It is the largest television network in the country in terms of revenues, assets, and international coverage.

ABS-CBN is the oldest television broadcaster in Southeast Asia and one of the oldest commercial television broadcaster in Asia. It is also the leading television network in the Philippines with advertising revenues of almost 19 billion pesos for the fiscal year of 2014. ABS-CBN's first ever television broadcast was on October 23, 1953 as Alto Broadcasting System (ABS) on DZAQ-TV, just 3 months after the first broadcast of Nippon Television of Japan. It is also the first television network in Southeast Asia to broadcast in color, the first television network in the Philippines to formally launched a digital terrestrial television service, and the first broadcast television network in the Philippines to formally launched in high-definition.

Surigao City

Surigao City (Tagalog pronunciation: [sů-rēh-GAŮ]), officially the City of Surigao (Filipino: Lungsod ng Surigao; Surigaonon: Siyudad nan Surigao; Cebuano: Dakbayan sa Surigao), is located at the north-easternmost tip of Mindanao Island in the Philippines and the capital of the province of Surigao del Norte. It has a total land area of 245.34 km² which is roughly 1.4% of Caraga region. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 140,540. with an annual growth rate of 1.52%. An average of 573 persons live per square kilometer, the most densely populated urban area in Caraga region.

The absence of a fort in Surigao belies its significance and sphere of influence during the Spanish period. It was the capital of the expansive province of the same name from 1750 until its dissolution in 1911, covering a third of Mindanao Island's total land area. It is one of the oldest port towns in Mindanao, founded by Spanish colonizers in 1655. It has abundant mineral reserves including gold, iron, manganese, silica, cobalt, copper, chromite and among the world's largest nickel deposits in Nonoc Island. The Asian Institute of Management ranks the city as among the most competitive small-sized cities in the Philippines, with an estimated total income of 600 million pesos in 2012.

TV Patrol

TV Patrol is the flagship national network news broadcast of ABS-CBN in the Philippines. It can be heard simultaneously on radio through DZMM Radyo Patrol 630 and its cable channel counterpart DZMM TeleRadyo and on provincial radio stations based in Palawan (765 kHz), Cebu (1512 kHz) and Davao (1296 kHz), with several MOR stations nationwide (103.1 Baguio, 93.5 Naga, 93.9 Legazpi, 94.3 Tacloban, 98.7 Zamboanga, 91.9 Cagayan de Oro and 95.1 Cotabato). It is also broadcast overseas via ABS-CBN's international brand, The Filipino Channel. It is the longest-running Filipino spoken evening newscast since its inception on March 2, 1987.

History

Pre-launch

In the fourth quarter of 1986, ABS-CBN News executives, among them the then News Manager Angelo Castro, Jr., began holding meetings with higher-ups on plans to launch an all-new news program that will serve as a replacement to Balita Ngayon. On March 1, 1987, ABS-CBN announced the launch of TV Patrol during the public variety extravaganza "Ang Pagbabalik ng Bituin" (The Return of the Star) at Luneta Park, Manila.

The Better Half

The Better Half is the title of an American comic strip created by Bob Barnes. It follows the lives of a married couple, Stanley and Harriet Parker, and the usual annoyances couples have with one another after years of marriage. It was distributed by The Register and Tribune Syndicate and King Features Syndicate from 1956, and in 1958 won Barnes the National Cartoonist Society Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award. The strip ended on November 30, 2014 after a 58-year run.

James Coco and Lily Tomlin made a sitcom pilot based on the strip for ABC in the early 1970s, but no series was ever made.

Cartoonists who have worked on the strip include Bob Barnes (1956-1970), Ruth Barnes and Dick Rogers (1971-1979), Vinnie Vinson (1979-1982), and Randy Glasbergen (1982-2014). Between 1982 and 1992, Glasbergen wrote under the pseudonym "Jay Harris", so as not to confuse publishers who were familiar with his different style of humor and character design. As he was able to transform the characters to his own style, he began using his own name. In the process, Stanley became much shorter than Harriet and lost his scruffy mustache. "Harris" was his wife's maiden name.
