Video of CAPE HORN landing by Zodiac with hurricane force wind gusts measured at the light house, which is a very normal summer day at the end of the world. With over 800 shipwrecks and 10,000 lost lives between 1870 and 1914 before the completion of the Panama Canal, the Drake Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica became well-known as the most treacherous ocean waters on the planet.
This region is also notorious for monster storms with winds gusting routinely over 100 mph, fueled by the merger of warm and cold ocean currents of the South Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and the temperature gradient from the Antarctic ice sheet to the south. A wind gust of near 120 mph was measured just the day before our landing at Cape Horn lighthouse.

Cape Horn is widely considered to be the most southerly point of South America, and marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage; for many years it was a major milestone on the clipper route, by which sailing ships carried trade around the world. However, the waters around the cape are particularly hazardous, owing to strong winds, large waves, strong currents and icebergs; these dangers have made it notorious as a sailors' graveyard. The need for ships to round the Cape Horn was greatly reduced by the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914.
This was cruise day #11 of my 16-day cruise. In this video we rounded the notorious Cape Horn. We sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean and then back into the Atlantic again. Visabilty was poor due to the weather conditions.

Produced in 1936, this wonderful old film shows a voyage aboard a schooner named Wanderbird around South America. The captain of this vessel is Warwick M. Tompkins of Gloucester, Massachusetts, who later wrote a book about the journey entitled "50 South to 50 South". For decades, the book has inspired many to seek out their own nautical adventures.
The film is rich in imagery of the age of sail, including shots of sailors at work, Gloucester harbor, a woman at the helm of the vessel, a massive storm, becalmed, images of the Altantic and Pacific Oceans, and the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay.

Das Luftwaffenmusikkorps 2 der Bundeswehr ist ein professionelles, symphonisches Blasorchester aus Karlsruhe. Es ist bis zu 60 Soldaten und Soldatinnen stark und auf deutsche Militärmusik spezialisiert. Es wird im Rahmen der Bundeswehrreform bis Ende März 2014 aufgelöst.
Auch zwei weitere der ursprünglich vier Luftwaffenmusikkorps werden aufgelöst.

Passing below the western hemisphere's land masses, Cape Horn Island is striking and dangerous. More than 50% of the shipping attempting this east-to-west passage in the 19th and early 20th centuries were lost...Lots of men and material. Come along on a modern ship in the same dangerous and REAL seas. Now cruise ships take passages via The Magellan Straight and inland passages. The open sea around Argentina's eastern-most points and across the Horn are simply too dangerous, which is why the old shipping trade used the Magellan Straight.

On December 12&13 2010, the ms Veendam was sailing out of Port Stanley on her way to Cape Horn. Shortly after leaving the Falkland Islands we encountered hurricane force winds and endured an epic pounding by the southern ocean. These are force 12 winds in excess of 100 mph.

Volvo Ocean Race
The Volvo Ocean Race (formerly the Whitbread Round the World Race) is a yacht race around the world, held every three years. Originally named after its initiating sponsor, British Whitbread brewing company, it today carries the name of its current owner, Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo Cars and Swedish multinational manufacturing company, the Volvo Group. Presently, the Netherlands holds the record of three wins, with Dutchman Conny van Rietschoten the only skipper to win the race twice.
Though the route changes to accommodate various ports of call, the race typically departs Europe in October, and in recent editions has had either 9 or 10 legs, with in-port races at many of the stopover cities. The 2008–09 race started in Alicante, Spain, on October 11, 2008. The route for the 2008–2009 race was altered from previous years to include stopovers in India and Asia for the first time. The 2008–09 route covered nearly 39,000 nmi (72,000 km), took over nine months to complete, and reached a cumulative TV audience of 2 billion people worldwide.

The Jonathan, owned and captained by Mark Van De Weg, after several weeks in Antarctica in late January 2015 rounded Cape Horn. The "screaming" sound in this video is caused by the strong wind in the boat's rigging. The winds reached 63 mph. The boat reached 16 knots, the fastest it had ever gone, At one point Captain Mark had three members of the party go down into the salon and lock the hatch. Susan says she was terrified. The open sea around Argentina's eastern-most points and across the Horn are simply too dangerous, which is why the old shipping trade used the Magellan Straight.

On December 12&13 2010, the ms Veendam was sailing out of Port Stanley on her way to Cape Horn. Shortly after leaving the Falkland Islands we encountered hurricane force winds and endured an epic pounding by the southern ocean. These are force 12 winds in excess of 100 mph.

Antarctica - Rounding Cape Horn
The Jonathan, owned and captained by Mark Van De Weg, after several weeks in Antarctica in late January 2015 rounded Cape Horn. The "screaming" sound in this video is caused by the strong wind in the boat's rigging. The winds reached 63 mph. The boat reached 16 knots, the fastest it had ever gone, At one point Captain Mark had three members of the party go down into the salon and lock the hatch. Susan says she was terrified. And loved it.

The Last Cape Horners - The End of the Great Sailing Ship Era Gustaf Erikson of Finland owned the last great fleet of sailing ships the world would ever see. He employed them in the last trade left to the sailing ship, the carriage of grain from Australia to Europe by way of treacherous Cape Horn. Now old men, the last of the true Cape Horners tell of the dreadful conditions in which they lived and worked while sailing the great souther ocean towards the Horn. The film is illustrated with amazing archival footage shot on board three of these vessels in the las days of sail. Running time 72 minutes plus 20 minutes of extra interviews.

Cape Horn is widely considered to be the most southerly point of South America, and marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage; for many years it was a major milestone on the clipper route, by which sailing ships carried trade around the world. However, the waters around the cape are particularly hazardous, owing to strong winds, large waves, strong currents and icebergs; these dangers have made it notorious as a sailors' graveyard. The need for ships to round the Cape Horn was greatly reduced by the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914.
This was cruise day #11 of my 16-day cruise. In this video we rounded the notorious Cape Horn. We sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean and then back into the Atlantic again. Visabilty was poor due to the weather conditions.

The Jonathan, owned and captained by Mark Van De Weg, after several weeks in Antarctica in late January 2015 rounded Cape Horn. The "screaming" sound in this video is caused by the strong wind in the boat's rigging. The winds reached 63 mph. The boat reached 16 knots, the fastest it had ever gone, At one point Captain Mark had three members of the party go down into the salon and lock the hatch. Susan says she was terrified. And loved it.

It's certainly been a while but the media blackout of our expedition has been lifted and here's our first expedition on the 67ft Steel Challenger "Xplore" for the 2015-2016 Antarctic season! We supported the first hydro-foiling Nacra F20 catamaran to round Cape Horn, skippered by Franck Cammas with Johannes Wiebel for the Julbo Sailing Session.
To all my incredible followers, I'm so thankful for all the well wishes and kind words this year, it has been truly amazing receiving so many beautiful messages.

For those ships that sailed around Cape Horn, Ancud represented a safe harbour on the journey north in which they could rest after sailing the stormy waters of the South Pacific. At a time when whales and seals were hunted in the Antarctic, Ancud served as a supply station along the route to the southern Polar sea. From the Atacama Desert in the north to as far as the stormy Tierra Del Fuego in the south, Chile is a country rich in contrast. Volcanoes, arid deserts, salt lakes, lively geysers, sandstone mountains and a cosmopolitan city. All of this is to be found in Chile, a country at the end of the world!

Located at the most southerly tip of Chile and Argentina, Tierra Del Fuego is America’s wild south, a ‘land of fire’ at the end of the world. At its southernmost tip South America ends in a confusion of islands and at the granite rocks of storm beaten Cape Horn.We visit the Argentinean section of Fireland and arrive at Ushuaia, the southernmost town in the world and ‘gateway to Antarctica’. It is difficult to believe that not long ago nothing but the wooden huts of Anglican missionaries stood here, those who introduced Christianity to the Fireland Indians in 1869. The Museo Territorial is contained within one of the town’s oldest buildings and although its display rooms are somewhat small, the exhibits more than compensate. The history of this former prison island is also on show and well documented with old photographs, paintings and various tools. Next we enter Presidio Prison, a dark chapter of Tierra del Fuego’s historic past. It was inaugurated in 1902 after almost four hundred hardened criminals in yellow-blue striped clothing had been forced to build it. Only a handful of people are allowed to go to the island closely supervised by a guide and sticking to well-defined pathways. It is amusing to watch the Magellan Penguins - which actually bray like donkeys! – as they waddle along in true penguin-like comical fashion. Where once brave explorers, far from civilisation, discovered new land, today ECO tourism is flourishing. Hopefully it will always be an adventure to come here on this journey to Fireland at the end of the world!

He renews acquaintances with his guide from Pole to Pole and the statue of Ferdinand Magellan with the Indian whose toe he kissed to ensure a safe journey. Venturing through the islands, he views the Torres del Paine National Park and the grave of an English explorer who committed suicide in the area. At Chiloe Island, he chats with an American transplant who discusses the possible existence of witches on the island. Then he attends a local barbecue that included dancing and Palin attempting to play the horse's jawbone. North to Santiago, he observes a memorial to victims of the 1973 coup d'état. Driving through the Atacama Desert, Palin reaches the highest elevation of his life thus far. At the world's largest copper mine in Chuquicamata, Palin does the honors of counting down to the explosion. In the northern town of Arica, he catches a one-car train to La Paz in Bolivia. Things go smoothly until, as they are within striking distance of La Paz, the train has a freakish derailment. After several attempts to get the train back on line, they are successful and eventually reach the Bolivian capital in the black of night.

The Panama Canal is a 77.1-kilometre (48 mi) ship canal in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean (via the Caribbean Sea) to the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international maritime trade. There are locks at each end to lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 metres (85 ft) above sea level. The current locks are 33.5 metres (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks is currently under construction and is due to open in 2016.
France began work on the canal in 1881, but had to stop because of engineering problems and high mortality due to disease. The United States took over the project in 1904, and took a decade to complete the canal, which was officially opened on August 15, 1914. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduced the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America via the Drake Passage or Strait of Magellan. The shorter, faster, and safer route to the U.S. West Coast and to nations in and around the Pacific Ocean allowed those places to become more integrated with the world economy. It takes between 20 and 30 hours to traverse the canal.
During construction, ownership of the territory that is now the Panama Canal was first Colombian, then French, and then American. The US continued to control the canal and surrounding Panama Canal Zone until the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties provided for handover to Panama. After a period of joint American–Panamanian control, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999, and is now managed and operated by the Panama Canal Authority, a Panamanian government agency.
Annual traffic has risen from about 1,000 ships in 1914, when the canal opened, to 14,702 vessels in 2008, the latter measuring a total of 309.6 million Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS) tons. By 2008, more than 815,000 vessels had passed through the canal; the largest ships that can transit the canal today are called Panamax. The American Society of Civil Engineers has named the Panama Canal one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

We decided to take on the ultimate Australian 4WD adventure and head up Queenslands Cape York Peninsula to Australias most northern point.
There are a number of ways you can tackle this drive experience. You can take on the OTT or OTL (Old Telegraph line track) where you will experience the great remote wilderness of Australia. This track starts at Bramwell junction and finishes at the Jardine River. There are two bypass roads that allow travellers to get from the Peninsula Development Road to The Tip without having to navigate all of the creek crossings and rough roads. They pass mainly through the highlands to the east and west of the route, and are heavily corrugated which makes for a rough drive.
If you decide to take on the challenge of the OTT there are a number of creek crossings along the way, some more challenging than others. Along the way the track reconnects with the Bypass road so you can bypass some of the more challenging crossings if need be.
Palm creek, Gunshot, cockatoo creek are some of the more challenging crossings we take on, however there is some pretty spectacular places you will come across on the track like the beautiful elliot falls, twin falls and fruit bat falls all of which provide a great place to cool of or camp for the night.

The Barcelona World Race is the first and only double-handed (two crew per boat), non-stop, round the world regatta. It is a lap of the globe starting and finishing in Barcelona (Spain). This is an extreme sporting challenge and ocean adventure that puts human limits to the test.
Organised by the Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB), the regatta is part of the IMOCA Ocean Masters World Championships.
The start of the race is on the 31st of December 2014 at 13h00, with the starting line positioned opposite the W Barcelona hotel at the city's port. The finishes are forecasted for the end of March 2015.
The boats cover some 23,000 nautical miles in a circumnavigation from Barcelona to Barcelona, putting the capes of Good Hope (South Africa), Leeuwin (Australia) and Horn (Chile) to port (their left) and the Antarctic to starboard (their right). During the three months of racing the skippers make their way through 12 climate zones and cross 3 oceans, as well as sailing in the Mediterranean Sea.
The crews race on IMOCA 60 yachts, 18 metres in length. Their masts can reach up to a maximum of 29 metres, as high as a building with ten floors.

Extreme landing on CAPE HORN by Zodiac boat!
Video of CAPE HORN landing by Zodiac with hurricane force wind gusts measured at the light house, which is a very normal summer day at the end of the world. With over 800 shipwrecks and 10,000 lost lives between 1870 and 1914 before the completion of the Panama Canal, the Drake Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica became well-known as the most treacherous ocean waters on the planet. This region is also notorious for monster storms with winds gusting routinely over 100 mph, fueled by the merger of warm and cold ocean currents of the South Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and the temperature gradient from the Antarctic ice sheet to the south. Produced in 1936, this wonderful old film shows a voyage aboard a schooner named Wanderbird around South America. The captain of this vessel is Warwick M. Tompkins of Gloucester, Massachusetts, who later wrote a book about the journey entitled "50 South to 50 South". For decades, the book has inspired many to seek out their own nautical adventures. Ship Storm Cape Horn Cruise
On December 12&13 2010, the ms Veendam was sailing out of Port Stanley on her way to Cape Horn. Shortly after leaving the Falkland Islands we encountered hurricane force winds and endured an epic pounding by the southern ocean. These are force 12 winds in excess of 100 mph.

Antarctica - Rounding Cape Horn
The Jonathan, owned and captained by Mark Van De Weg, after several weeks in Antarctica in late January 2015 rounded Cape Horn. The "screaming" sound in this video is caused by the strong wind in the boat's rigging. The winds reached 63 mph. The boat reached 16 knots, the fastest it had ever gone, At one point Captain Mark had three members of the party go down into the salon and lock the hatch. Susan says she was terrified. The Last Cape Horners - The End of the Great Sailing Ship Era Gustaf Erikson of Finland owned the last great fleet of sailing ships the world would ever see. He employed them in the last trade left to the sailing ship, the carriage of grain from Australia to Europe by way of treacherous Cape Horn. Now old men, the last of the true Cape Horners tell of the dreadful conditions in which they lived and worked while sailing the great souther ocean towards the Horn. Cape Horn is widely considered to be the most southerly point of South America, and marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage; for many years it was a major milestone on the clipper route, by which sailing ships carried trade around the world. However, the waters around the cape are particularly hazardous, owing to strong winds, large waves, strong currents and icebergs; these dangers have made it notorious as a sailors' graveyard. The need for ships to round the Cape Horn was greatly reduced by the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914.
This was cruise day #11 of my 16-day cruise. In this video we rounded the notorious Cape Horn. We sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean and then back into the Atlantic again. Visabilty was poor due to the weather conditions.

The Jonathan, owned and captained by Mark Van De Weg, after several weeks in Antarctica in late January 2015 rounded Cape Horn. The "screaming" sound in this video is caused by the strong wind in the boat's rigging. The winds reached 63 mph. The boat reached 16 knots, the fastest it had ever gone, At one point Captain Mark had three members of the party go down into the salon and lock the hatch. Susan says she was terrified. And loved it.

Questo filmato è soltanto la Parte Prima del DVD "AROUND CAPE HORN" - Sono le memorie e le riprese dal vero del Capitano IRVING JOHNSON che riguardano la Nave a Palo "PEKING" che fu uno dei più grandi velieri del mondo di oltre 3000 tonnellate di stazza. La nave a palo Peking, della quale vedremo ora il filmato, venne costruita nel 1911 dal cantiere Blohm & Voss di Amburgo per conto della compagnia Reederei F. Laeisz di Amburgo. La stessa compagnia, soprannominata "P Line”, era anche proprietaria di altri prestigiosi velieri come il PAMìR, il PASSàT e il POMMERN. Questi grandi velieri, a quel tempo, erano chiamati WINDJAMMER. Attualmente la PEKING è stata ristrutturata ed è tornata nel porto di Amburgo diventando un Museo, ristorante e Hotel di lusso.

Ant Steward circumnavigated the world on a rather small open boat called "Zulu Dawn" but named "NCS Challenger" for the voyage. He had nowhere to build his boat and talked a friend into letting him do it inside his apartment. Getting it into and out of the apartment must have been an interesting exercise. Resin smells and woodwork noises in the early hours eventually led to an enforced removal to Royal Cape Yacht Club, where she spent the last couple of months before launching. He left Cape Town amid warm farewells from hundreds of people. Many expected to never see him again and talked of his foolishness. Recorded February 24-25, 2009. Tierra del Fuego is an archipelago off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland, across the Strait of Magellan. The archipelago consists of a main island Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego divided between Chile and Argentina with an area of 18,572 square miles, and a group of smaller islands including Cape Horn. Initially discovered by Ferdinand Magellan's expedition in 1520, the islands were not settled by people of European descent until the second half of the 19th century at the height of the sheep farming and gold rush booms. Ant Steward circumnavigated the world on a rather small open boat called "Zulu Dawn" but named "NCS Challenger" for the voyage.

Ant Steward circumnavigated the world on a rather small open boat called "Zulu Dawn" but named "NCS Challenger" for the voyage.
He had nowhere to build his boat and talked a friend into letting him do it inside his apartment. Getting it into and out of the apartment must have been an interesting exercise. Resin smells and woodwork noises in the early hours eventually led to an enforced removal to Royal Cape Yacht Club, where she spent the last couple of months before launching.
He left Cape Town amid warm farewells from hundreds of people. Many expected to never see him again and talked of his foolishness. He said that if we thought that he was mad we should get to know his mother, then we would know where he got it from. He had decided that he was sane and the rest of us were crazy for staying behind. It would have been a crowded boat if we had not.

В Южной Америке другая страна , Венесуэла, которая сидит на нефти и деньгах, взяла курс на социализм под руководством Хьюго Чавес (ныне покойный в Аду с Кастро и Альенде ). Венесуэла на сегодня одна из самых бедных стран на континенте, где пустые полки магазинов, и не прекращающие беспорядки на улицах городов.

Tierra del Fuego is an archipelago off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland, across the Strait of Magellan. The archipelago consists of a main island Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego divided between Chile and Argentina with an area of 18,572 square miles, and a group of smaller islands including Cape Horn. Initially discovered by Ferdinand Magellan's expedition in 1520, the islands were not settled by people of European descent until the second half of the 19th century at the height of the sheep farming and gold rush booms.
The video begins as we sail around Cape Horn and up the Beagle Channel on the Star Princess. After docking in Ushuaia, Argentina I take a drive through the Andes Mountains and embark on a wildlife cruise in the Beagle Canal.
