There are a limited number of commercially viable diamond mines currently operating in the world, with the 50 largest mines accounting for approximately 90% of global supply. Diamonds are also mined alluvially over disperse areas, where diamonds have been eroded out of the ground, deposited, and concentrated by water or weather action. There is also at least one example of a heritage diamond mine (Crater of Diamonds State Park).
In mineralogy, diamond (/ˈdaɪəmənd/ or /ˈdaɪmənd/; from the ancient Greek ἀδάμας – adámas "unbreakable") is a metastable allotrope of carbon, where the carbon atoms are arranged in a variation of the face-centered cubic crystal structure called a diamond lattice. Diamond is less stable than graphite, but the conversion rate from diamond to graphite is negligible at standard conditions. Diamond is renowned as a material with superlative physical qualities, most of which originate from the strong covalent bonding between its atoms. In particular, diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any bulk material. Those properties determine the major industrial application of diamond in cutting and polishing tools and the scientific applications in diamond knives and diamond anvil cells.
Because of its extremely rigid lattice, it can be contaminated by very few types of impurities, such as boron and nitrogen. Small amounts of defects or impurities (about one per million of lattice atoms) color diamond blue (boron), yellow (nitrogen), brown (lattice defects), green (radiation exposure), purple, pink, orange or red. Diamond also has relatively high optical dispersion (ability to disperse light of different colors).

The Black Diamond Mine - one of the oldest mines in the region - is so old that its early history has been mostly lost to time. However, it is believed that the site was originally discovered by a group of Chilean miners. It has a fairly unique structure in that it is a vertical shaft plunging down into the Black Diamond Ridge and four separate and distinct tunnels intersect with the shaft at varying levels down the face of the ridge. Mining for the New York state mineral Herkimer Diamond, and we hit the jackpot. Contact us at http://www.americangeode.com/events.php for more photos, stories, and gem and mineral show announcements and news. Now the source and formation of Herkimer Diamonds is of particular interest to us here at American Geode because the Herkimer Diamond was formed in "pockets" not unlike the pockets that formed geodes. Most quartz crystals grow, over the course of millions of years attached to a matrix, attached to the surrounding rock or stone. So in those formations only one end of the quartz crystal grows to its point. With Herkimer Diamonds forming inside pockets, freed from the surrounding matrix stone, they grow points on both ends. The Herkimer Diamond began forming nearly 500 million years ago...

Mirny mine is a former open pit diamond mine located in Mirny, Eastern Siberia, Russia. This mine is 525 meters deep which made it 4th Deepest mine in the world with a diameter of 1,200 meter and is the second largest excavated hole in the world, after Bingham Canyon Mine. Now this Diamond mine is inactive, while it was operational it was taking two hours for trucks to drive from the top to the bottom of the mine. The diamond-bearing deposit was discovered on June 13, 1955 by Soviet geologists Yuri Khabardin, Ekaterina Elagina and Viktor Avdeenko during the large Amakinsky Expedition in Yakut ASSR. They found traces of volcanic rock kimberlite which are usually associated with diamonds. This finding was the first success in the search for kimberlite in Russia, after numerous failed expedi...

The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction ...

We hit the approximate halfway point in this abandoned mine in our last video and after many wet, cold hours spent underground, we decided to call it a night (Yes, we explored this mine all day and then into the night). So, on our next exploring trip a couple of days later, we started at the opposite end of the mine at the shaft you see in this video. Yes, this is the same mine... The portal, or mine entrance, seen in the first video is one side of the mine and this shaft is the other end of the mine. Even though they are a long way apart, the two sides connect underground. It’s a rare occurrence, but a troll successfully got under my skin in the comments section of a prior video by calling me a coward for not thoroughly documenting every nook and cranny of this mine. A troll is a troll, ...

You keep on crossing those hearts
You keep on hoping to die
You keep on sticking those needles
You keep on telling lies
So strange, so much in common
We really see eye to eye
You've got this wrapped up tight
You're really saying everything right
So sick of your sons and daughters, not as they appear
I'm so sick of these double-crossers, being so sincere
I'm calling fraud, you're telling lies
I'm calling fraud, you're selling deception
So strange, good friends in person
Not the case behind my back
You let it slip tonight
You're the one to start this fight
So sick of your sons and daughters, not as they appear
I'm so sick of these double-crossers, being so sincere
I'm calling fraud, you're telling lies
I'm calling fraud, you're selling deception
Not sure what you've got to hide, you're little masquerade
You're living like camouflage, everything so staged
Not looking for a well cut piece of glass
We're searching for the real deal
Not looking for knockoffs sugar
We're searching for the real deal, c'mon!
So sick of your sons and daughters, not as they appear
I'm so sick of these double-crossers, being so sincere
I'm calling fraud, you're telling lies
I'm calling fraud, you're selling deception
We're out looking for diamonds, so hard to find
We're looking for diamonds
